Chapter 218: Midnight Revelations

Canada and Wales had made their way to the kitchen, where Wales prepared some tea for them. Canada was cradling his cup, still trying to process what Wales had told him, and Wales was waiting patiently. After all, this was something that Canada had to do on his own.

"So… the dragon is polygamous?" Canada asked at last.

"That's right," Wales sighed. "The fact that you have a dragon like that means that your magic works best when you're surrounded by people you love, and who love you too. That would explain how you were progressing so well at the conference…"

"And… now?"

Wales was silent for a moment as his mind processed all of the information it had received over the past month.

"If you go too long without having people around you, you'll lose control of your magic," Wales said. "That would certainly explain your invisibility. And it doesn't look as though Kumajiro would work."

Kumajiro was still in the guest bedroom, sleeping blissfully. There was no need for them to wake him, and besides, it wasn't always a good idea to wake a sleeping bear.

"So… What would you suggest?" Canada asked.

Wales pursed his lips.

"You said you were considering polygamy," he said. "Did you mention it to any of those idiots?"

"A few," Canada admitted. "They all said that they're fine with it, as long as they're with me."

Wales nodded his head, as though his suspicions had been confirmed.

"The magical core would of course cause them to accept it, as long as they were with you," he said. "It doesn't alter their emotions, except perhaps lowers their jealousy. So you don't have to worry about the possibility that they're being forced to like you."

Canada had been worried about it, and Wales obviously knew him well enough to know that it was a genuine concern for him.

"I can't believe I'm saying it," Wales said, "but I think it might be best to figure out who you want to be with, and if it's more than one nation, then by all means. But your magic is now awake, and if the core doesn't get the company it seems to crave… Let's just say, invisibility isn't going to be your only problem."

Canada sighed, running a hand through his hair.

"How can I choose?" he asked in despair.

Wales sighed, before he stood up and went to the liquor cabinet. He returned with a bottle of whisky and two glasses, which he placed in front of Canada and promptly filled up.

"Prussia had a point the other day," Wales said, pushing one of the glasses closer to Canada. "In vino veritas."

Canada gaped at his uncle, surprised by what he was suggesting.

"You really think getting drunk will solve my problem?" he asked incredulously.

"Yes," Wales said simply. "It will either help you understand what's going on in your head and heart, or it's going to make you forget about your problem. Either way…"

Canada's eyes flitted between Wales and the glass, and eventually, he took the glass and tipped his head back.

"I'm actually surprised by how well you can hold your liquor," Wales remarked as he calmly sipped his own drink.

An hour had passed, and Canada wasn't at the point where he would be called 'smashed' yet. But he was most definitely drunk. He'd drunk about three-quarters of the bottle, and Wales had already gone to fetch a bottle of gin for when the whisky was finished.

"I don't see where this is supposed to go," Canada slurred slightly.

"Oh really?" Wales asked, smirking. "Tell me, what do you think of… Prussia?"

"He's a good friend. Kind of like my uncle on France's side. Except he likes to have fun, even more than Patrick. But I wouldn't let them drink together. It wouldn't be a good idea."

Wales felt a vein tick slightly at the implication that Canada didn't think that he was fun, but at least he knew that Canada was honest and without a filter. That was what they wanted, after all.

"Take another drink," Wales said, filling up Canada's glass again.

By now, the younger nation was on autopilot, and he downed the drink placed before him.

"Now, tell me, what do you find attractive in a person?" Wales asked.

Wales knew that he was cheating by prompting Canada like this, but he knew that he needed to get Canada to say something that would help him. And listing off the attractive traits was one way to start.

Canada blinked slowly, his mind trying to process the question.

"I don't think I'm attracted to anything physical," he admitted. "I like both men and women, green, blue and brown eyes, blond, red, brown and black hair, dark and light skin."

Wales shook his head. He decided that the blame should fall on France for Canada not caring about physical appearance.

"And personality?" Wales prompted.

Canada cocked his head to the side.

"I like it when people aren't always the same," he admitted. "Like, for the whole world, they come across as hard and cold, but to you they show that they're soft and warm. Lovi's a lot like that, and so is Lars. Oh, did you know Lars likes romantic poems? And he knows a lot about flowers. And Lovi's really sweet if he cares about you. He may seem like he keeps yelling and cursing, but he knows how to cheer you up. And Norway. He doesn't look easy to read, but he's pretty nice and easy to talk to. Oh! I also like people who look calm through everything, like Egypt and India. And Greece too. And Austria was so sweet when he wrote me that song."

Wales sighed. That was one problem about getting someone drunk: they sometimes tended to stray from the path of the conversation. Still, it did help that Canada seemed to be narrowing it down.

"I guess that's a start," Wales sighed. "What else?"
