Something Wild Calls You Home
Part 1
Dark was the room where a snoring person lay sleeping. Suddenly a door slid open to let some light in from another room to reveal the set up of the sleeping quarters. Shelves full of different Imperial soldier helmets, from Stormtroopers to Tie pilots. Some were covered in paint and a familiar scout trooper one was orange with a unique symbol stenciled on the side. And that was just the right side of the room. The back wall was a door to the refresher and on the left was a bed with the person sleeping below the sheets.
The bed had different things hanging over it from the ceiling on a string. Some were broken pieces of different colorful glass or pieces of tools or rusted screws. The walls were painted with different figures. Pictures of spider-like creatures and storms with lightning. A forest of coral trees. Different species of people. A diamond-shaped freighter. A man in a mask. It was if a child lived here. Well…. kind of.
The door closed and it got dark again. But soon the room was filled with the sound of loud purring. A lazy groan was followed and a light turned on in the room. This time a hand had popped out from beneath the sheet and pressed a button on the wall beside the bed. On top of the person below the sheets was a white feline-like creature with bird-like feet. The hand pulled the sheets off to reveal a sixteen-year-old girl. She was in white long sleeve pajamas and had a tired look on her face. As she sat up lazy, her hair stuck in different angles. This made the creatures look at her curious and give a small meow.
"Come on, Hope," the teen girl wined. "Don't Lothcats sleep the day away?" The white lothcat just chirped before jumping off the bed. "I guess not," The girl said with a slight chuckled before she turned to the spot on the wall right next to her bed. "Good morning to you, too," The girl said as she stroked a painted drawing of a white-eyed creature with a flat nose, large brow, a long beard, and big antlers. Then the girl jumped off the bed quickly and leaned down to the cabinets below to grab some clothes.
She walked into the room next door. A wider space with another bed to the left of the wall. At the far back was a kitchen with a bar table. In the middle was a desk with a transmitter and other tools and supplies on the ground around it. The walls were also painted. Some old drawings of Stormtrooper helmet crossed out. And some new ones of wolf-like animals and fields of grain. A skyline of rock spires or white circles that connected like a map.
Here, the teen quickly cleaned herself up. She fixed up the sleeves of her green long sleeve shirt and made sure her brown vest wasn't dirty. Then she patted down her matching long brown skirt before shifting a small strand of hair dyed orange to sit behind her ear. Feeling ready, she walked out another door on her right.
When it slid open, she found herself outside and in front of her a woman with colorful armor. "Hi," the girl said.
The woman replied with a sweet little, "Hey," Then she crossed her arms and gave the girl a quizzical look. The girl asked what was wrong to which the woman replied, "I've just been thinking about how a lot has changed… even you Nitza."
Said girl smiled. Yes, she had changed. Nitza was no longer the small, scruffy-looking eleven-year-old she was five years ago. Nope. A lot had certainly changed. And not just her age and look. Nitza went to stand next to the women as they both leaned over a railing. They were on the platform of a former communication tower on the planet of Lothal. It was a round-shaped structure on top of a very, very tall post in the middle of the plains.
Nitza looked at the view in front which was an ocean that met the plains. Near the shore was a city shining bright with tall white spires. The sky a beautiful blue. From what the locals told Nitza, when then the Imperials were here it was not like this at all. A dome-shaped building with factories made the city grey and grim and the pollution covered the sky with smoke grey clouds. So how come the Imperials weren't here anymore and Lothal a beacon a beauty now?
Nitza sighed as she and the women rested their heads on crossed arms over the railing. They were both thinking the same thing. Ezra and Kanan. After the crew had left Nitza at the Felucian Orphanage five years ago, they spent night and day on Lothal doing everything they could to slow progress of Thrawn's Tie Fighter production and free Lothal of Imperial rules. Well, they did, with a price.
To save the crew from an explosion, Kanan accepted the fate a Jedi Knight must ultimately take. A selfless act over a selfish one, that of sacrifice. His death did not go in vain though. The explosion stopped Thrawn's Tie Fighter program all together which saved many lives in the galaxy. But Lothal was still under threat. With the help of the Rebel cell on Lothal and a couple of allies the crew made on many of their previous mission, Ezra and the crew forced the Empire out of Lothal completely. But to do so Ezra followed in his master's footsteps.
While the rebels fought Imperials ground forces, Ezra used the Force to call on the help of flying whale creatures called Purrgils. They destroyed the Imperial barricades and air forces around the planet. To finish the job they used natural abilities to jump into hyperspace to take Thrawn and his ships into an unknown trajectory. But to make sure Thrawn was no longer a threat, Ezra had been on that ship, too.
According to Ezra's final message the crew discovered after, it wasn't the outcome he wanted, but it was what needed to happen to save his planet and his adopted family. When Nitza was first told about all this, she did cry, as anyone else would have. Kanan was gone and Ezra was lost in space somewhere. Those goodbyes they gave her back on Felucia more bittersweet then anyone could have foreseen. But she understood. She was always told by her best friend…. expect the unexpected. As far as Nitza knew, those Jedi kept the balance and still did the honorable thing in the end. But even if they were gone, there was still promises to be kept. And it came with a tug in Nitza's chest whenever she thought of it.
A huge shadow suddenly loomed over Nitza and the armored women. They both looked up to see old but well kept red and white Jedi cruiser. The wingspans going up and down instead of left and right. It was high enough to fly right by the top of the communications tower and its direction was towards the city. Hope the Lothcat ran out outside at that moment. "She's here!" Nitza yelled as she ran around the structure to an elevator in the back. "Come on, Sabine!"
Said woman said, "Ok, ok, let me quickly grab something and we'll go."
Moments later, Nitza was sitting backwards on the back of a speeder. She watched as the Communications tower became small in the distance as she held Hope in her arms. Amazed at the history she was leaving behind it with. The Communications tower was abandoned long before the Empire came. When Ezra was living on the streets of Lothal, this place was his hideout before he met the Ghost crew. But it had been her and Sabine's home for a while now. Keeping Ezra's helmet collection and old drawings on the walls but adding new stuff to liven up the place.
Nitza looked back to Sabine driving the speeder through the plans. The teen girl took in the details from the hems of the woman's grey pants and black under shirt, to the kinks on the painted chest plate and boots. She always marveled at the drawings of a purrgil on one shoulder blade and the other the official Rebellion symbol. When the woman turned around to smile at Nitza, she was running a hand through her very short, striking purple-dyed hair.
The com-tower had been Sabine's home longer then Nitza. Ezra's last request to Sabine was that he was counting on her. So she stayed behind on Lothal in the last five years to make sure no Imperials decided to return to Lothal. No attack came so far, so that promise was kept. But there was still Nitza. When Zeb, Hera, and Chopper came months later to visit her on Felucia and tell her what happened to Kanan and Ezra, Nitza reacted humbly. Sometimes promises can't be met and honored the two Jedi's sacrifice. But Nitza still felt sad those promises could never be met.
She made friends with the children of the orphanage and adjust as best she could. But she still had a longing in her for those promises. Especially since one was to go back to where she grew up. The problem was that even though the Rebellion had their first victory and destroyed an Imperial superweapon, the Empire was still strong enough to keep planets they had under their jurisdiction. So two years after that rebel victory, after only a couple of visits to Felucia, Hera brought Nitza to Lothal as Ezra had promised back then. Without any sign of the Empire wanting to attack Lothal, Hera knew it was safe for Sabine to take care of Nitza there.
Especially since Sabine wasn't leaving Lothal for any Rebellion missions. Nitza pulled out her father's chain hidden around her neck. The tag was still there, but the Imperial symbol engraved was now painted over by Sabine's Starbird symbol. Nitza admired what the Rebellion stood for but was still on the fence with some of their choices. And even though Nitza hated the Empire, she still missed her parents dearly. They would have loved exploring Lothal as Nitza had. But still there was more than here.
Nitza smiled at Sabine and looked forward as they were starting to get close to the city. Suddenly, a couple of brown loth cats popped their heads out of the plains of grass as the speeder passed by. Hope gave a chirp and then all of a sudden jumped off Nitza's lap. The girl watched relieved as Hope landed fine and began to play around with the Lothcats as they became small in the distance. Nitza had made all sorts of animal friends since she started to live on Lothal three years ago. And not just Lothcats but Lothbats and even Lothwolves. Running alongside the speeder came two giant grey wolf creatures with bird-like feet. Nitza waved at them before they ran the other way. All the animals, no matter how nice, were still wild.
Sabine drove through the city, passing by bustling crowds of people in the market. She and Nitza waved as the crowd waved back. Once parked by one large spire, Sabine got off the speeder, holding her newly painted helmet and a satchel in hand. When Nitza got off, some kids in the crowd came up to Nitza and began to ask her all sorts of questions. One constant one being, "Do you have a story to tell us today?"
Nitza smiled but shook her head. Even though she was grown up, Nitza still held the heart of a child. Just like with Felucia she was good with the ones on Lothal, especially those younger than her. She understood them more then they realized. Which made it fun to tell stories about where she grew up as well as stories from her time with the Rebellion and the Ghost crew. The better storyteller than any adult in Sabine's opinion. "Not today, we're going on a special mission. But when I get back, I'll tell you that story. How about it?"
"Yay!" All the kids cheered before saying goodbye to Nitza and Sabine. The two were at the top of the spire moments later. Nitza and Sabine got into a large room with a large hole having been blown through one wall to let in natural light. Across the hole on another wall was a painted mural. The rock spire pillars of Lothal drawn in the back with two moons. A white and black lothwolf on either side of the Ghost crew painted in the middle with Hope the white lothcat on Ezra's shoulder.
Nitza looked at the artist of the mural. Sabine had done this piece upon request of the civilians of Lothal to honor the heroes. Personally, it was a good way to remember how the crew was altogether all those years ago. Soon the shadow of the Jedi cruiser followed them again. They looked out to the hole in the wall to see the ship dock on the side and a ramp open up to let the driver walk out. A Togruta woman in a white cloak and hood up stood with pride as she lightly tapped her staff on the ground. Nitza smiled and ran to her, "Hi, Ahsoka!
Said woman smiled and embraced the young teen in her arms. "Hello, Nitza." They looked at each other happily. They remembered how they both first met surrounded by coral trees, never knowing they would see each other again among plains of grass. Nitza had been living on Lothal for a while when Ahsoka came to visit to reveal to the crew that she was alive. The Togruta said Ezra saved her through his discovery of this World Between Worlds. Before he disappeared, Ezra tried to explain it was a place where time had no meaning and the Lothwolves used it as a form of travel.
Strange as the idea was, the crew and Nitza, especially Rex, were just happy to see Ahsoka again. Imagine Ahsoka's surprise when she found the strange girl from another planet was on Lothal and friends with the Ghost crew. But Ahsoka had come back to fulfill her side of the promise she kept with Ezra. She would go find him. And turns out, Ahsoka wasn't the only one who made that promise. "Ready to go?" Ahsoka asked Sabine.
The woman turned away from the mural, putting on a brave face before putting on her helmet. She tapped the satchel at her side where the tip of Ezra's lightsaber poked out. He left it to Sabine, and now Sabine had to return it back. And the only way was to find their missing Jedi friend lost in space. That's what Ezra meant in that final message. "More then ready," Sabine said.
"I'm ready, too," Nitza said. Sabine and Ahsoka had asked Nitza to go with them. Nitza didn't think much of it. She was going on a journey in space. It sounded fun but she was leaving familiar territory again. Ahsoka had felt that sadness when Nitza said she would be glad to join them. So last minute, Ahsoka and Sabine told Nitza not to pack anything. How come? Nitza had no idea. Were they going to come back to Lothal with Ezra sooner than expected?
They got on the Jedi cruiser, Nitza sitting in the back seat behind the two front seats of the cockpit where Sabine and Ahsoka were. Nitza was quiet the whole time, saying goodbye in hopes to see it again. She liked Lothal, but for some reason, this goodbye didn't feel sad. After all her heart was feeling the call to be elsewhere. Something was amiss.
"So, where are we going?" Nitza asked when the cruiser was in Hyperspace.
"We told you it's a surprise," Ahsoka said as she winked at Sabine. The armored woman smirked.
The teen girl sat back with arms crossed and huffed, "Well… you're not the first person to be all ominous towards me." That's when Nitza stroked a special patch sewn into the left side of her brown vest. It was a white diamond shape with an orange border. In the middle was the same creature that was painted in by her bedside in her room at the old com-tower. Her best friend. The Bendu.
That's when… it all came clear…. There was still one more promise to be kept… that of a Jedi Knight's. Nitza stood on her feet just as the ship jumped out of Hyperspace. A planet with an orange tinge came into view. Nitza could almost cry out of joy. Nitza knew where she was right away. Was in so much shock, her body just moved in instinct as her mind was trying to process.
No one on Lothal knew where Nitza came from. If the subject was brought up she would say she was once Imperial. When she told the children of Lothal where she grew up, they were just fantasy. A creature living out in the wild that in itself was the balance of the Force… whatever that meant. So when the parents heard this, they just assumed Nitza somehow survived the wild on her own, hallucinating what she saw.
But it wasn't, and when her mind came to Nitza found herself standing at the top of a cluster of very tall coral trees to look at the familiar landscape surrounding her. Coral mesa everywhere with hills and paths leading anywhere. This feeling in her chest grew stronger. This was Atollon.
The Jedi cruiser was docked close with Sabine and Ahsoka standing by. They wanted to give the girl her space. They knew how much this meant to her as they watched her pat the side of her vest where the Bendu patch was. The patch was specially made for her to show off she was from Atollon even if the Empire it hard for her to come back. So where was the Empire… Nitza turned to Sabine and Ahsoka. Before she could ask a boom was heard in the sky. Nitza looked up to see a diamond-shaped freighter fly in through the clouds.
"The Ghost?" Nitza exclaimed. The three of them went down to the third level of leaves where the ship went to dock. Remnants Chopper Base from rusty holo-tables to empty crates lay scattered. When the three girls got there, they saw a familiar Twi'lek woman, a Lasat male, and an astromech looking all round in amazement. Nitza waved and said, "Hera, Zeb, Chopper, it's so good to see you!" Unlike Sabine, Ahsoka, and Nitza, the rest of the crew hadn't changed in look one bit. But there can be additions…
A five-year-old boy with tan skin poked out from a pile of scrap metal with his green short hair in a mess. His little aqua blue eyes went wide and pointed green ears wiggled when he spotted them, "Hi Aunty 'Bine! Hi Ahsoka! Hi Nitza!" and he went running in a burst of speed that felt unmatched to any speeder.
As he came to Nitza, the teen girl kneeled and gave him the biggest hug. "Hi, Jacen," she said to the boy she loved like a little brother. The biological son of Hera Syndulla and Kanan Jarrus. Whenever Jacen came and his mom came to visit Lothal, he would be the best listener in all Nitza's stories. Especially if they were about the father he never got to know.
"Be a lothwolf!" Jacen pleaded as he stepped back and pointed to the lothwolf patch on the left shoulder of his gray jumpsuit. It was his favorite game to play since it involved him pretending to be his dad. Nitza loved it since it allowed her to be a wild child again without ridicule. She got on all fours, her back feet bent to keep her bottom low and her hands go in a fist.
"AAAOOOO!" she called out before leaning her head down and Jacen put a hand on her forehead and said, "I'm Kanan, let's be friends!"
Sabine and Ahsoka went up to Hera and Zeb, Ahsoka saying, "Congratulations on destroying the second Death Star at the Battle of Endor."
"I'm just glad that those Imps are gone for good," Zeb said. Even though Nitza was playing with Jacen, she overheard the conversation and couldn't help but agree. A week ago the Empire tried another go on creating another planet killer superweapon. Just like last time, the Rebellion stopped them. But they destroyed it along with the Emperor inside. With him gone, the Imperials couldn't recover like last time. The horrible regime was over and the word was a New Republic was to be created to run the galaxy in peace. Peace… wait a second…
Nitza gasped and stood up. Jacen fell back and then sat up to watch Nitza's eyes go wide. Nitza noticed there were no signs that the Imperials set up a base here. But Nitza couldn't come back because it was under their jurisdiction. So Star Destroyers were supposed to create a barricade—Nitza gasped and looked at the sky. No Imperial ship in sight when they came in. They must have left when they heard the Emperor was killed. So that meant one thing. Hera looked around at the rusty shield generator, "I still can't believe Phoenix Squadron was here almost six years ago. Chopper Base was an amazing place…"
"High Trees," Nitza said as she turned around to face the crew with a smile and tears going down her face. "This is High Trees… because I'm on Atollon." Then she ran to Hera and hugged her. "Atollon is free…" she managed to say through choked sobs. Then she went to Sabine and hugged her. "You brought me home… thank you."
As everyone swarmed the teen girl in a group hug, Jacen said, "We wanted to surprise you by bringing you home. Are you surprised?" Nitza laughed as she tried to calm herself down from the almost sobbing mess she became. She could only nod in agreement. "Ok, so let's go meet your friend Bendu."
Nitza stepped back away from the crew, looking at them in shock. She was still processing that she was back on Atollon that it still hadn't registered that she was going to see her best friend again. Nitza put a hand on her Bendu patch before closing her eyes. Bendu, the one in the Middle of Ashla and Bogen. The light and the dark side. Neither one or the other. He was who he was. A force of balance in nature. Yet, one who took in a five-year-old girl when her parents were killed in a crash eleven years ago. A creature that raised her in the wilds and to think like nature.
And think like him Nitza did. Because out of anyone, even Jedi, she understood Bendu the most. If there was one thing that had not changed in Nitza these last five years, it was the lessons she took with her wherever she went. Nitza looked back at the crew. They knew her story, even Jacen and Ahsoka. This wasn't just an abandoned rebel base to them. And it was time to reunite some friends. Just like Kanan had promised her. Perhaps this was the Jedi's work through the Force. Sabine suddenly walked up to Nitza and pulled out from her bag, not Ezra's lightsaber…. But Nitza's old Bendu doll.
Nitza grabbed it in shock, thinking she had left it behind on Lothal on her bed. But Sabine managed to sneak it on their trip here to surprise her. Even if the doll looked worn out, it was still a link to her memories here on Atollon. No longer just memories though. Nitza looked out to the wilds in pride. And if the Force willed it… "Yes… and I want you all to meet him."
A.N: I could try and summarize, but it's just so long. Which is why this is a two part update so what are you waiting for go read it the next chapter right now!
