The morning came with promises of sunshine and blue skies. Birds flew across the expanse of the heavens and chirped their good mornings to the citizens of the country below them. The trees seemed taller, the flowers more colourful, and the grass greener (and not just on the other side). People got ready for their days and headed to work, mostly with smiles on their faces.
One man, in particular, was looking over all his boats at the sailing school where he taught, making sure they were all in good shape. He'd taken his sixteen-year-old son with him and was showing him how to check the boats for any kind of problem. His son tried to look interested for his father's sake, but it was obvious that his mind was wandering.
"You nervous about introducing us to your new girlfriend, lad?" Harry Hook asked, finally acknowledging the fact that his son wasn't interested in the vessels
"Huh?" Tommy said, pulling out of whatever he was thinking, "Oh. Um. Yeah, I guess so. She's the first girl I've ever brought home. I guess I don't know what to expect."
"Don't worry about it, son. We won't be hard on her. Much."
"Thanks, Dad. That helps," Tommy replied, sarcastically.
Harry laughed and clapped his son on the shoulder, "Why don't you head back to your mam and your sister, eh? I'll finish up here."
Tommy smiled in relief, "Thanks, Dad."
He left the boat shed and began heading back home. He checked his watch four times in the short walk home, each time deducing that his girlfriend would arrive in just under an hour. He didn't know why he was so nervous. He had survived meeting her parents and one of them was his tourney coach, so if things didn't go well, he'd have had to face him every day. If things didn't go well between Kamryn and his parents, she wouldn't have to see them too often. But he wasn't sure what to do if they didn't get on.
"Hey, Mam!" Tommy called through the house as he walked in.
"You're back early," his mom commented, emerging from the living room, shifting her turquoise braids over her shoulder.
"Yeah, Dad sent me home. I wasn't paying enough attention to what he was saying."
"Yo, big brother!" His little sister, Shay, appeared as their mother headed back into the living room. "When is that girl of yours coming? I still don't believe that she exists."
Tommy rolled his eyes, "In an hour or so." He wished that time would go faster so that he wouldn't have to think about the fact that he was nervous.
Shay sighed, "Come on, let's go watch something while we wait. That way you won't be twitching like an idiot for an hour."
"I ain't twitching!" He denied. But he did follow her into her bedroom. They sat and mindlessly watched TV on her laptop until Tommy heard the doorbell go.
He was up like a shot and took the stairs two at a time to try and get to the door before either of his parents did. Luckily, his parents seemed to realise that he would want to open the door himself, and so were just stood in the hall, waiting for him to let this girl in.
"Hey!" Tommy exclaimed as he opened the door to see a smiling girl he had somehow managed to convince to go out with him, "You made it!"
"I said I would, right?" Kamryn replied, "I'm don't really break promises."
"Yeah, no, of course you don't. Uh, come in." He opened the door wider and gestured her into the house.
Kamryn smiled and walked in, smiling at his parents who were stood behind him. "Hi, I'm Kamryn. Nice to meet you, Mr and Mrs Hook," she said politely, holding out her hand.
They both shook it before replying. "Nice to meet you too. And please, call us Uma and Harry," Uma said, smiling.
Kamryn nodded her head in understanding. Uma gestured her into the living room and Tommy led her in, sitting down in his favourite seat, with her next to him. The living room was simple enough, with a two-seater and a three-seater in a sandy-brown colour, and a wall covered in photographs of the family. There was a guitar in one corner and a bookshelf that was completely full in the other. Their wall-mounted TV was currently off and under it was a cabinet, most likely full of movies and gaming consoles. One of the windows looked onto their garden, and the other, a brilliant view of the sea from over the rooftops of other houses.
Just as Harry was offering to fix Kamryn a drink, Shay came in, grinning like the Cheshire Cat.
"So you do exist! I honestly thought Tommy was making you up to make himself feel better."
Tommy shot her an annoyed look but Kamryn laughed, "Yeah, I exist. Sorry. Your brother actually managed to get a girlfriend. Though, most days, I'm not sure how either." She grinned at Tommy who raised an eyebrow whilst Shay laughed, sitting down.
"Well, it wasn't easy, I'll say that much," he said, smiling back.
"Why would I make it easy on you?" Kamryn replied, causing the other Hooks to laugh whilst Tommy rolled his eyes. He then put his arm around her and pulled her closer, which Kamryn accepted with no resistance. She wrapped an arm around his waist and held him close to her.
"I like you, lass," Harry said, grinning with amusement, "But you look remarkably familiar. Have I seen you before?"
Kamryn smiled, "Oh, uh, yeah, I've been told I look a lot like my dad. He said that he knows you guys. Jay Jafar?"
Harry raised an eyebrow, "You're Jay's kid?" He immediately saw the similarities but was still quite surprised. Jay's kid was dating a Hook? Jay and himself were not friends, although they were civil with one another, especially as Gil was so close to them both. But to think that their children were going out...that was an especially odd thing to think about.
Kamryn nodded, "That's me. And my mom is Lonnie Li if you know her."
Uma grinned, "Lonnie Li. Well, I can't say I know her well, but our paths have crossed a few times. Our swords may have as well."
Kamryn raised an eyebrow before her eyes widened in realisation, "Oh, right. You guys all fought that one time that Mom went to the Isle. You'd kidnapped Uncle Ben or something. Pretty awesome. Mom told me about it after Tommy visited."
"'Uncle Ben'?" Harry questioned, "You mean to tell me that you're related to the king as well?"
"Not officially," Kamryn answered, "Dad always called Aunt Mal his sister and Uncle Ben his brother-in-law so they've just always been Aunt and Uncle to me."
Uma smiled at her, "That's nice." She had lost contact with the queen but it did not surprise her that she regarded Jay's daughter as her niece. "So, tell me, Kamryn, what do you enjoy doing at school? Tommy refused to tell us anything."
Kamryn raised an eyebrow at her boyfriend, a little confused, before answering Uma, "Well, I'm pretty good at school but I love tourney. I'm actually the captain of the Fighting Knights."
"Oh really?" Uma questioned, looking interested, "And your dad is the tourney coach, isn't he? Tommy mentioned it, I believe."
"Yes, but trust me, that made it no easier for me to become tourney captain," Kamryn told her. She had faced a lot of problems for that, many people believing that the only reason she got the captaincy was because her dad was the coach and not because she had earned the title. "If anything, Dad was even harder on me than he was on anyone else."
"She definitely earned the right," Tommy put in, "She is amazing at tourney. She easily kicked the butts of the rest of us, so she was the obvious choice."
"If I remember correctly, Dad was considering you for the role as well," Kamryn said, with a grin as she nudged him in the side.
"Yeah, after you and about four other guys," Tommy replied, with a laugh, "Trust me, I'm nowhere near your level."
Kamryn gave a shrug, "That's true." Tommy laughed and kissed the top of her head.
Uma and Harry glanced at each other with soft smiles as they watched their son and his girlfriend be so wrapped up in one another. Harry then suddenly stood up, "I just realised I haven't gotten you a drink like I said I would. Tommy, come give me a hand."
Tommy reluctantly detached himself for Kamryn and stood up to go join his dad in the kitchen. As soon as they'd gone, Uma turned to Kamryn with a gentle look on her face. "Thank you."
"For?" Kamryn replied, a little confused.
"Being so good for my boy. He seemed to always be getting himself into trouble before he realised that he liked you. You've kept him under control."
Kamryn laughed, "Yeah, I try to keep him out of trouble as much as possible. You never know when he might go too far and someone gets hurt." She was always worried that it would happen but she had noticed his wild nature begin to die down around the time that he began pursuing her.
Uma smiled, "And you care about him?"
Kamryn nodded, "A lot. He's a great guy."
"Good," Uma replied, "Because we're all very close, our family. Unfortunately, some people fail to look past our surname so we relied on each other to stay afloat. We are each other's anchors in this storm of life. I expect you to be the same for my Tommy." She gave Kamryn a meaningful look. It wasn't threatening but it was a warning. A warning of what may happen if she wasn't able to be what Tommy needed her to be, of what may happen to Tommy if his heart was broken.
"I promise, I won't hurt your son. He is one the best things that has ever happened to me," Kamryn vowed.
"Aww, that's cute!" Shay said, with a grin. "Seriously, though, what did Tommy pay you to pretend to be his girlfriend?"
"Shay, cut it out!" Tommy exclaimed walking back into the room, holding two mugs. He handed one to Kamryn.
"I'm only kidding!" Shay replied. Tommy shot her an annoyed look but said nothing as Kamryn laid a gentle hand on his shoulder. They sat and chatted for a while longer, Harry joining them with the promise that lunch would be ready soon. They talked about anything and everything, with a lot of chats about different sports, about the sea and sailing (which Harry had promised to teach her if she'd ever felt up to it), about school, about family etc. Lunch had been lovely and Kamryn had impressed the Hooks with her appetite. They continued to sit at the dining room table and Kamryn noticed just how close the family seemed to be. What Uma had said was becoming obvious. They were each other's anchors and Kamryn felt privileged to be accepted by this small family. She could see how happy Tommy was that Kamryn loved his family and could tell that they liked her too. She glanced over at Tommy briefly and decided that this was the start of something bigger and she couldn't wait to see what else the future had in store for her. After all, she'd still to meet his aunts.
Here you go Owllover34! Also, can I get a profile for Jax on my OCs book? I kinda need it if you want me to write this next one.
