He wondered what things would be like once she was human again. Things would be different between them. Right? They'd have to be. They knew so much about each other at this point, had grown so much closer. There's no way they could go back to how they were before, even if they wanted to.
He still worried about what she'd say when he eventually confessed, but he knew without doubt, whether she rejected him or not, they'd still be friends.
