A howling breeze awoke Unyast from his dreamless slumber. He groggily blinked the sleep away from his eyes as he hauled himself to his paws. Unyast padded outside the den, immediately taking note of the high winds. Once more he went up the hill to see if there was any sign of the white bears. He could only smell a hint of the bears in the distance. They must be beyond that mountain. He thought, looking at the tall cliff that laid on the other side of the tundra. The large grizzly took a look behind him before walking down the hill to the tundra.
The flat snowy land ahead stretched far out, being halted by the mountain range he had to pass through. Unyast let out a long shiver before continuing on, walking down into the tundra. "This weather is going to freeze my pelt off." Unyast muttered to himself under his shaky breath. Snow and ice dug in between his toes, making each crunch sting. Despite his large brown pelt Unyast could barely stand how freezing it was outside.
Eventually as he walked, a fine gray mist grew upon the snowy tundra that he trekked across. At one point Unyast could only see a couple bear lengths in front of him.
The walk to the mountain range had now seemed a lot longer than he expected. I bet I'm not even going in the right direction. He thought to himself before stopping. Judging from how bright the mist was, it was daytime so he couldn't just sleep through it."Hmm." He grumbled. Maybe I could follow that white bear scent. Taking a quick nod, he brought himself to his two hind legs. His large body lumbering over his environment and his head rotating every now and then to pick up any scents. "Wait." He spoke to himself, he had smelled a delicious scent. Some flat-faces were burning food.
His belly rumbled at the thought of food, even if it was the burnt meat that flat-faces commonly ate. Returning to his four paws, he briskly walked in the direction of the scent. Small ice crystals flew into Unyast's eyes as he walked, making him flicker his eyes in discomfort. After a while more of wandering through the mist, only guided by his nose, Unyast could now hear the noises of two flat-faces. Unyast let out a mighty and threatening roar before stomping towards the flat-faces. The two flat-faces yelled in terror and began running off, leaving behind a flame which roasted a piece of meat that lay above the fire, hung by a metal mesh. Unyast stood up on his hind legs and roared at them again to make sure they didn't return.
Waiting a couple heartbeats as he watched the direction the flat-faces ran off in, he grunted in satisfaction. He returned to his four paws and tried to take a bite of the meat.
"Ah!" He grunted, tearing away from the burnt meat. He had completely forgotten about the fire. Cautiously he slid the meat off the metal mesh, making sure not to touch the hot metal. Once it fell to the snow covered ground he immediately went to chew it. It tasted weird, not as good as rabbit or squirrel, but it wasn't horrendous.
Once he finished the burnt slab of meat he noticed that near the fire were two of those weird flat-face dens. The ones that shielded them from the wind, but any bear could rip through it in one light sweep. Unyast gave another look at the fire before getting up to his paws and walking over to the green one. He tore the front open and clambered in. Looking around, he noticed the den had tall metal meshes that held tasty smelling metal objects. "This is odd." He commented before moving his snout to the flat-face objects.
Unyast chomped on one of the objects, pulling back when the pain hit him. "Ow!" He whimpered. It was kind of dumb of me to try that. The large grizzly thought to himself as he bent his head down to inspect it again. Maybe if I crush it? Following his thoughts, he pulled up one of his heavy paws before slamming down on it. With a crack, the object smushed in on itself, letting meaty smelling food splatter the ground and his across his paw.
He lifted his paw and began licking the meat from his paw. It tasted fine, just slightly
worse than the meat those flat-faces were burning. The lightly colored brown bear took his time to lap off the food from his paws before he trudged back to the mesh to collect another can. Sliding off another can and crushing like he had done before, this time revealing a collection of tiny fishes. Flat-faces sure eat a lot of different things.
Unyast couldn't deny that he was very fascinated with flat-faces. They were all very peculiar, the way they walked on only two legs and never on four, or their severe lack of claws. They had odd pelts which often had colors that were almost non-existent in the natural world. Now Unyast learned more, they store their food in odd metal containers.
Once he finished the first container he had an idea, How about I take these with me? He thought, looking at the small containers. Maybe I could call them cans. He thought out of the blue, it was starting to get annoying to call them small meat containers.
He padded over to the mesh and grabbed two of the cans using his jaws. He stumbled outside of the flat-face den, shivering as he was reintroduced to the freezing temperatures. Awkwardly carrying the two cylindrical objects in his jaws, he inspected his surroundings. The mist that rolled over the tundra had now nearly gone away, leaving the mountain he was following to slightly poke above the grey mist. He walked a couple bear-lengths forward before taking a look back at the flat-face dens and fire. Turning his head back forward, he nodded, continuing onward to the mountain.
The large brown bear confidently strode through the snowy tundra until he finally met the mountain. He hauled himself over the elevated land, keeping his snout raised high in search of the white bears. Unyast was filled with excitement as he wandered around the cliff, what did these bears want from me? Did they even want me there in the first place? Was that star bear dream really a bunch of cloud-flu- His thoughts were interrupted by a shocked whimper a couple of bear-lengths away.
Being jolted from his thoughts, Unyast jumped at the noise. "H-Hello?" He asked after placing down the two cans. A long awkward silence went through the air as he looked at the source of the whimper. The location he stared at was dotted by many small rocks and short evergreen trees, which he assumed the bear hid behind.
He slowly began forward, making sure he didn't look threatening. "I won't hurt you." He said awkwardly to the unknown bear. He continued to slowly pad to the clearing until he notices a young white bear face peeking around a rock, soon retreating back behind it.
"Err, don't worry it's okay." Unyast said after halting. After a long pause, a young white bear padded around the rock he hid behind, terror in his bright eyes.
"W-who are you?" The young bear asked, his voice trembling.
"I'm Unyast." He answered
"Kissimi." The young white bear responded.
