Chapter 11: Quidditch Begins
Things had finally calmed down after the Greyback Incident, the climate of fear that filled the castle finally lifted, Mia smiled at the memory of the extra Halloween Feast Dumbledore has set up for the school to make up for the actual one being interrupted by the werewolf attack, complete with dancing skeletons for entertainment. Mia was pleased to see Chiara there, thankfully unharmed from her attempt to attack Greyback.
Cecil had left with his fellow members of the Werewolf Capture unit, after declaring Mia an honorary member. There was one dark spot, while the rest of the 'pack' had been taken away prisoner, Greyback had managed to escape. Luckily they could rest assured that, without his pack, it would be a long time before he'd even think of attempting an attack again. Now a new buzz was filling the school, not fear this time, but excitement. It was almost time for the first Quidditch match of the season, Gryffindor vs. Slytherin.
"So, what do you think Rowan?" She asked excitedly.
Rowan bit her lip. "I don't know Mia, I've never exactly, you know, been into Quidditch, besides, this is...Gryffindor vs. Slytherin right, isn't it kinda unusual, for us to show up?"
Mia smirked. "I talked to Chester and he said it's quite common for people from all houses to show up at all the matches, the only times you'll ever seen a whole house supporting one team is their own. It'll be fun, c'mon, this'll be the first time for me seeing Quidditch and I'd like for you to come along."
"I...well, I suppose, why not. It could be fun, so...we're supporting Gryffindor then?" Rowan replied, smiling.
Mia nodded. "Yup, can you imagine Merula's face if Gryffindor win?"
They both laughed, noting Merula at the Slytherin table who noted their laughter and glared, clearly suspicious.
So it was they found themselves walking down to the Quidditch pitch, showing their support for Gryffindor and drawing a sharp glare from Merula as she passed.
"Wow, you guys are going too huh?"
They turned to see and excited looking Penny approaching, she'd gone even further than them in her support. Aside from carrying a Gryffindor flag and wearing a Gryffindor scarf, but also she had painted red and gold stripes on her cheeks.
"Yeah, we thought it'd be fun." Rowan confirmed. "Wow, you look like you've gone all out."
Penny laughed. "Of course, you didn't know I'm a massive Quidditch fan, I've been a follower of the Wigtown Wanderers for years."
"Wow." Mia gasped, amazed.
Penny nodded. "Yeah, oh look."
They turned and grinned as they saw Ben approaching them too.
"Hey, um...you guys ready to go." He asked. "I...I was afraid I might get hurt, but I decided to come anyway."
They all grinned and went to made their way towards the Quidditch stadium. But before they could enter, Mia found herself shoved aside.
"Hey!" She snapped, turning to glare.
But she stopped, eyes widening in surprise as she beheld the one who shoved her. It was a rather tall girl with long blonde hair, blue eyes and fair skinned with a firm jaw, notable broad shoulders and muscular arms. It was hard to say exactly, but Mia guessed she was a third year.
"Out of my way." The girl snapped before heading off, towards the changing rooms.
Mia shook her head, before any of the others could say anything and they entered the stadium.
Seated in the stands with her friends, Mia was swept up in the moment, enjoying the excitement of the crowd, taking in the sights of the Quidditch pitch before her. It was much better seeing it, compared to just hearing about it.
"Ladies and Gentlemen." A voice rang out. "Welcome to the first Quidditch game of the season, today's game, Gryffindor vs. Slytherin. We're looking at a brilliant game ahead I'm sure, with a 98.8% change of edge of your seat excitement."
Mara spotted the speaker in the commentators booth, she was just near enough to make out his appearance. He looked to be a second year, fair skinned with short slicked up blonde hair, blue eyes, dressed smartly and seated in a wheelchair. Mia recognized him, he was in Ravenclaw, but she didn't know his name.
She turned to Penny. "Say, who is the commentator, I've seen him before in the Ravenclaw common room."
Penny smiled. "That's Murphy McNully, he's just become Quidditch commentator...oh and um, we should be careful at the next match."
"Careful?"
"Just be ready to pull Ben down, his fears may prove very real." Penny explained. "That girl you bumped into, her name is Erika Rath, she's a Ravenclaw Beater and has a lot of aggression, she doesn't like to play fair either and has been known to even attack the crowd. Just be ready in case she sends a bludger this way."
Mia grimaced but nodded, returning her focus to the pitch as both teams were already in position and Madam Hooch had started the game.
At once the action began as the players soon began their titanic struggle to begin. Murphy's commentary immediately picked up, detailing the action.
"And they're off, Gryffindor in possession of the Quaffle, Gryffindor Chaser Franklin Kendrick off to a good start, streaking up the pitch there, weaves through the Slytherin Chasers, oh here comes a bludger, nice dodge there, Kendrick shoots...Scores, Ten-Zero to Gryffindor."
There was a torrent of cheers from the Gryffindor side, Mia grinned, this was quite thrilling and the match had only just begun.
"And now Slytherin in possession. Keeper Elizabeth Fancourt passes out the Quaffle to Slytherin Captain and Chaser Mallory Armstrong. quick move there, dodges both bludgers, attempt by Gryffindor to intercept, no another dodge, well played. Oh she shoots, no a fine catch by Gryffindor Keeper and Captain Angelica Cole."
Mia reacted to that name. "Angelica Cole, isn't she a Gryffindor Prefect, I'm sure Chester mentioned her once?"
Penny nodded. "Yeah, oh here we go, Gryffindor have the Quaffle again."
Mia turned her attention back to the match as the Gryffindor Chasers began moving around the pitch, passing the Quaffle between them to try and keep the Slytherin team from claiming possession. Finally, after a close dodge, Claudia Martin took another shot and scored Gryffindor's second goal. Mia cheered along with her friends and the Gryffindor fans in the crowd.
Mia grinned as events continued and Murphy's commentary continued.
"And Slytherin in possession again, they'll need to really up their game, Gryffindor's chances of winning have now increased to around 66.3% and-Oh, definite foul."
Jasper Major had launched a bludger, with clear intent, into the stomach of Gryffindor Chaser Charlotte McGuire, while the Slytherin Chaser Ian Lee had still been in possession of the Quaffle. Gryffindor was awarded a penalty after Jasper's foul and Charlotte put it away no problem, increasing the score to thirty-zero.
Looking around at all the players Mia turned to Penny. "Say, Penny, do you know the names of everyone on the teams?"
"I was able to find out from a few of my Quidditch friends, yeah." Penny replied. "We've already heard all the Gryffindor Chasers names. We know Angelica, their beaters are Philip Jones and Bernadette Miller and their Seeker is James McKellen."
Mia nodded. "And the Slytherin team, apart from Jasper, the Captain, Ian Lee and the Keeper?"
Penny grinned and continued. "Yeah, the remaining three are Robin Campbell, she's the third Chaser, the other beater is Jasper Major and then the Seeker, Edward Kissinger."
Mia nodded, grateful, now that she knew who was who she could focus, especially as Slytherin began making a comeback, bringing the score to thirty each.
The match continued as did Murphy's commentary, a few details of which caught Mia's attention.
"Does he always talk like that?" She asked Penny. "Murphy, does he always talk about odds and percentages and statistics?"
Penny laughed. "From what I heard, yeah."
But the laughter soon vanished, replaced by gasps as another attempt at the goal was made but saved by Elizabeth Fancourt. The match still continued afterwards at a fever pitch.
Mia couldn't help grinning as she walked with her friends, along with the crowd of cheering Gryffindor students and fans. While there had been a few more fouls, Slytherin had pulled ahead to make the score sixty-forty but then Gryffindor Seeker James McKellen had caught the snitch and the final score was a Gryffindor victory with 190 points to 40.
"Well, next week is gonna be Hufflepuff Vs. Ravenclaw." Penny was saying. "That's...gonna be pretty interesting for me."
Ben turned to her, surprised. "Interesting, how, I mean…?"
Penny just smiled. "I'll probably explain more nearer the time, let's just say I may have an even bigger reason than usual in supporting Hufflepuff."
She wouldn't say more than that, but Mia did not join Ben and Rowan in their attempts to at least try to press for more information. She was too busy watching an irate Merula, who sent her a mutinous glare.
"Guys...I think we should be keeping an eye on Merula...I wouldn't put it past her to try something before the next match." She said.
The others followed her gaze and saw Merula's expression, they privately agreed.
Mia's concerns would come true the day before the match was due to take place. While at dinner in the Great Hall she had spotted Merula slipping away and nudged Rowan. Within moments they had got Ben and Penny's attention and sent them to carry out their part of the plan, while they pursued Merula. They soon caught her, attempting to open the door to the Quidditch supplies store cupboard.
"What do you think you're doing?" Mia snapped.
Merula turned, eyes wide, before glaring. "None of your business, Rosewell."
Rowan shook her head. "Are you really that jealous you'd resort to this?"
Mia nodded. "Yeah, that was a stupid question I asked huh, it's kinda obvious what you're doing."
"Oh sure, like anyone would believe you anyway." Merula snapped. "You think just because Gryffindor cheated their way to victory that you're all gonna be so great. But you won't be laughing once I make sure your team can't even play their match let alone win."
"So you admit it." Mia growled. "You're sabotaging the Ravenclaw team's brooms?"
Merula smirked. "So what if I am, not like your word counts for anything."
"But your confession certainly does Miss Snyde."
Even Mia and Rowan were startled upon hearing that voice. Their plan had worked far better than they had thought.
Knowing Merula was up to something they had opted to wait and see and when Merula made her move, Rowan and Mia would confront her while Ben and Penny alerted a teacher to overhear Merula incriminate herself or to catch Merula in the act. Ben and Penny it seemed had managed to inform none other than Professor McGonagall of something going on and now she stood, eyeing Merula with a cold gaze.
"Never have I encountered such a cowardly move, detention and twenty points from Slytherin, back to the school now." McGonagall growled.
Merula looked horrified, then angry, but wisely said nothing and trudged back to the school with McGonagall right behind her. Smiling, glad that things had gone well, Mia and her friends also made their way back to the school, looking forward to the next Quidditch match.
