Chapter 12: More Quidditch and Further Searching
Mia smiled, the excitement once again at a peak as it was the day of the second Quidditch match. Ravenclaw Vs. Hufflepuff, and when Mia sat down next to Rowan, they were all decked out in Hufflepuff colours.
"Well, here we go, next match." Mia grinned. "You ready?"
Rowan nodded. "Yeah, I can't wait...oh by the way, I've been meaning to ask you something Mia."
"Yeah?"
"It's about this...door." Rowan revealed. "I've been trying but I can't find any information or anything...so, so I was wondering if we could somehow go and get a closer look at this door?"
Mia bit her lip. "Ah, that could...that could be difficult, Snape gave orders to Filch to lock the door and guard it...but, maybe, maybe tonight. Even Filch has to sleep sometimes, so we might get a chance."
Rowan shifted nervously. "Um, okay, good point, but, alright, tonight it is. We'll just have to be careful."
Mia agreed and with their plans made, both girls turned their attention to the upcoming Quidditch match. They were soon joined by Penny who, once, was sporting a full plethora of support, namely a Hufflepuff flag and scarf, and even black and yellow face paint
"Wow, going all out huh?" Mia asked.
Penny laughed. "Like I said, I'm a huge fan, even more so considering who's on the Hufflepuff team this year."
"Oh?"
"Remember I told you about being a fan of the Wigtown Wanderers, well, the family that founded that team, their youngest daughter is here at Hogwarts, in Second Year, in Hufflepuff, this'll be her first match." Penny explained.
This surprised Mia and Rowan, but they both agreed, it made sense.
They were soon seated in the stands, ready for the game to begin As the players began to enter the pitch Mia leaned closer to Penny.
"Hey Penny, guess you know all the players again then?"
Penny nodded. "Yup, I knew you were gonna ask that. I can definitely name two you should be watching, both on the Hufflepuff team, trust me they are really good. First the team captain, Orion Amari."
She pointed out Orion, a Fourth Year boy with shoulder length brown hair and light facial hair, brown eyes with olive skin and a toned build. Just behind him was a second year girl, with chin length brown hair, a front braid swept to the right with the braid and tips of her hair dyed blue. She had hazel eyes and fair skin, some light freckles and a slender build being of just above medium height.
"That's her." Penny said. "That's Skye Parkin. That's the girl I told you about."
Mia, Rowan and Ben all laughed at her excitement.
"Hey, whoa, calm down." Rowan replied.
Penny cleared her through. "Sorry, yeah, the rest of the team. Well, they are both Chasers, the third Chaser is Anthony Liang. Then you've got Haley Brockbank, the captain and one of the beaters, the other beater is Alex Blaire. Finally their keeper Gideon Bush and Seeker Reginald Nixon."
Haley shook hands with a a tall wiry seventh year who had stepped forwards from the Ravenclaw team.
Penny introduced them too. "That's their captain and Seeker, Leonard Cooper…Their chasers, brothers Byron and Joshua Ewing. The third Chaser is Camilla Lodge. Then their beaters are Angela Wilson and Erika Rath and their keeper Winston Cushing"
"Erika Rath?" Mia gasped staring at the tall broad shouldered blonde girl.
Penny nodded. "Yeah, the same girl you bumped into last match, guess she was scouting the opposition, she does that sometimes, for intimidation."
They all smiled and watched again, excitement mounting as the match then began.
Once again Murphy was doing commentary.
"A fabulous start to this match as Hufflepuff take possession and it's famed newcomer Skye Parkin with the Quaffle, will we see some of those famous Quidditch talents of her family for her. I think the answer is yes, just look at that skilfully evaded all opposing players, a clear shot at the goal, she shoots, score, ten-zero to Hufflepuff!"
Mia was amazed, especially if this was indeed Skye's first match, she had flown effortlessly from the moment she got the Quaffle and made the goal she scored look easy.
"Wow..." She whispered.
Penny grinned. "See, what did I tell you."
They all grinned as the match continued.
Murphy, despite being a Hufflepuff, was remarkable good at being impartial in his commentary. "And Ravenclaw is now in possession, Gideon Bush passes the Quaffle to Byron Ewing and they're off, good teamwork now between Byron and his brother Joshua, passing the Quaffle back and forth to keep the Ravenclaw Chasers from...no interception by Orion Amari, Hufflepuff back in possession." He announced. "Orion Amari streaking up the pitch there, heading for the goal and, no had to drop the Quaffle there to dodge a bludger and Anthony Liang takes possession, streaks for the goal, he shoots...and keeper Winston Cushing saves."
Mia cheered with everyone else as the match continued it was fast becoming a rather frantic and fast paced match, she was very impressed with the skill of the three Hufflepuff Chasers as Hufflepuff soon increased their lead to fifty before Ravenclaw scored their first goal.
Mia bit her lip upon seeing this and looked over at Penny who seemed to be watching carefully.
"Penny…?"
Penny shook her head. "It's strange, I don't know if it's just Hufflepuff are inspired by having Skye on their team or Ravenclaw is just having a bad day, they're normally better than this."
"I kinda got that feeling too." Mia admitted. "Still, they're not giving up."
Penny smiled. "No, they're certainly not."
"Suddenly cries went up from the crowd and Murphy yelled.
"Oh now hold on. That was definitely a foul!"
There were gasps and cries outrage as Madam Hooch gave a short blast with her whistle before reprimanding none other than Erika Rath.
"Did you see that?" Ben choked out, eyes wide.
Rowan grimaced. "Ouch, that...why would she…?"
"She was trying to stop Hufflepuff taking possession, but that was far too aggressive." Penny explained.
Mia just grimaced as she nodded. Flying out of nowhere, Blatching Orion Omari, Erika had blocked him, but as a result Hufflepuff had earned a penalty which they scored, earning sixty points to ten.
The match continued for some time and despite some increased efforts which mainly came from the Keepers who were deflecting numerous attempts on the goal, but finally Ravenclaw pulled ahead to a massive lead of 160-10.
"Well this is getting more and more intense, Hufflepuff is showing remarkable form, their chasers are showing remarkable work. Ravenclaw will need to either catch the snitch to equalize or score at least one more goal and then catch the snitch to secure a win." Murphy announced. "But now we...whoa!"
At Murphy's shout everybody gasped there were worried cries and Mia grimaced when she saw Penny flinch, covering her mouth with her hands Erika was showing her aggression again and had directly aimed and hit the bludger right at her target. As a result, Skye Parkin dropped the Quaffle as she took the bludger to the face. But there was a surprise shortly afterwards as Murphy continued.
"Well that was not at all...wait, I'm just getting word...yes Skye Parkin is refusing to have her injuries seen too, she wants the match to continue." He remarked. "Yes, the match is continuing and I do believe, yes, Skye Parkin still intends to play."
Mia and her friends all shared an incredulous look at that. Mia couldn't believe it, despite taking a bludger to the face, Skye intended to continue. Madam Hooch had been reprimanding Erika and soon awarded another penalty to Hufflepuff but it was saved. Something about Erika's expression when Madam Hooch reprimanded her again did not sit well with Mia and so she resolved to keep an eye on her. It was a good thing she did for she wouldn't have believed it if she hadn't seen it with her own eye.
"Look." She cried.
Penny Ben and Rowan all looked up and gasped in horror, as Erika, a look of pure rage on her face, hit a bludger with great force, straight at Madam Hooch. Luckily Madam Hooch saw the bludger coming at the last moment and dodged before blowing sharply on her whistle and there was uproar from the stands.
"What is she even thinking?!" Mia cried. "How did she think that was gonna work?"
Rowan shook her head. "I don't believe she was thinking...She looks like the kinda person who doesn't exactly think straight when they lose their temper."
It turned out to indeed be the case and after an intense shouting match in which the Ravenclaw captain also got involved, also reprimanding Erika, Murphy summed up the situation for everyone's understand.
"Well after that intense and very questionable move, Madam Hooch has awarded Hufflepuff two penalties and a stern final warning to Erika Rath, she commits one more foul she is suspended for the rest of the school year." He revealed. "Now here we go, about to take the penalties..."
But both penalties were saved and the game continued.
Looking up at Skye, Mia wondered what drove her to continue to play, she could only wonder how Skye could even see. Even at this distance Mia could see a large red mark on the right side of the girl's face where she had been hit, the beginnings of a black eye forming and she even had a bloody nose, yet still she played, suddenly signalling to Orion and Camilla. Ravenclaw were in possession of the Quaffle and Byron Ewing was flying towards the goal when suddenly, all three Hufflepuff chasers were closing in on him.
"Is this...I do believe we're about to see the famous Parkin's Pincer folks." Murphy announced.
Penny gasped. "Oh watch this, this is the Parkin family's most famous move."
That caught all their attention and soon all their eyes were on the action as Orion and Camilla closed in and soon flanked and pressed up against Byron, keeping him pinned between them. Meanwhile Skye came flying directly towards Byron from the front. Then, at the last moment, she ducked underneath and jerked upwards knocking into Byron and throwing the Quaffle out of Byron's grasp, it was then caught by Orion who shortly afterwards passed back to Skye who then scored yet another goal.
The cheers from this soon changed to gasps of surprise as suddenly the Seekers made their move, the snitch having made its appearance. But finally the match ended and thanks to Reginald Nixon catching the snitch then and there, Ravenclaw only lost the match by ten points, the final score being 170 to Hufflepuff and 160 to Ravenclaw. With this match over, the first two matches of the season were over, each team had played one match and Gryffindor currently led the Quidditch league with 190 points, Hufflepuff were in second with 170, Ravenclaw in third with 160 and lastly, Slytherin with 60.
Much later that night Mia looked around anxiously. Apart from her and Rowan, nobody else was around. They had dressed in casual clothes, in dark colours to try and help them in case they had to hide.
"Alright, ready?" She asked.
Rowan nodded. "Yeah, let's go."
So, together they slipped out of the common room and Mia led the way, remembering the way until they finally reached the corridor with the door.
"This is where Filch and Snape were talking."
Rowan shook her head. "I'm sorry, I know I said we should go do this...but I'm starting to have second thoughts. If Snape told Filch to stay on guard, he'll be back soon. The stories I've heard about how he punishes students makes Snape look like a pleasant Hufflepuff."
"Don't worry, we'll just search quickly." Mia said. "We'll be fine so long as we're quick and stay alert."
Rowan nodded and they both turned, but right before they could get any closer they heard it, a rather accusatory miaow coming from the dusty looking cat seated before the door who had just seen them.
"Uh oh, is that..." Mia began.
Rowan's eyes went wide. "Mrs. Norris, Filch's cat."
"Run."
They turned and fled, thankfully just managing to avoid Filch and making it back to the common room. It was clear that any attempt to investigate that chamber, was going to require some further planning.
