Chapter Thirty-Two
Eva: 4000 LP
Keiji: 4000 LP
Daichi: 4000 LP
Jeanie: 4000 LP
"So this is all a setup," Jeanie mused, "isn't this just lovely?!"
"What do you mean?" Keiji asked, while still keeping his eyes fixed on the white haired lady standing opposite of them.
"Well," Jeanie explained, "Two or three years ago, I went to this very boring Top 500 Duelists party, which I go to whenever I can because I'm always center of attention and, I walk into the ladies room and there's Ever White without her mask on."
Eva just chuckled at the memory, before Jeanie went on: "Understandably she freaked out and asked me not to tell anyone and of course I said I wouldn't. Later we were out back chatting about this and that, and then she started talking about poverty and homeless people and all those things, and how she came from a poor family and is gifted to work herself up from an underprivileged home and how grateful she is and all that."
"Would you get to the fucking point?" Keiji urged her, "it's not like we have the time or anything."
"You wanna hear the story or do you not?"
"No one wants to hear your stories anymore dearie," Eva interrupted the two of them, "how about we get this game going properly so I can eventually revel in your defeat?"
"Awfully cocky for someone outnumbered like that," Daichi said.
"Don't be so sure about that," Keiji threw in, "This is a Contest of Champions, this thing only works if both sides are equal. So if that's a power indicator, then that girl's one hell of a beast."
"We needn't worry buddy," he replied, "we got the best duelist in the entire city on our side."
"Don't flatter me, my brother's right," Jeanie disagreed, "Ever White I would've rolled and smoked, even on my worst days, but if this is the girl with the Trap deck that played against Yuito, then I'm not so sure anymore."
"How about you quit locking me out of your conversations and we just get on with it?" Eva moaned impatiently.
"Okay, but how are we doing this? It's three vs. one," Daichi asked.
"It's actually gonna be easy," Eva answered, "I take every odd number of turns and rotate the even numbers between you. Feel free to attack me during your first turns also, not like it would matter much."
Without waiting for their approval, Eva immediately started her turn, placing all five cards in her hand face-down on her side of the field: "I set five cards and end my turn. Whoever of you wants to take the start?"
"I'll go last, if possible," Jeanie said, "I might have a plan, and it works best at that spot."
"Go for it," Keiji said, as he drew a card from his deck, effectively taking the next turn, "I'm not even gonna let it gonna come that far."
"I activate my Spell Card Force Conductor!" A large construct of copper cables and crackling electricity appeared right behind him as he spoke, "it allows me to add Bullet Spark from my Deck to my hand!"
"And I immediate activate my Trap Card Drastic Drop Off," Eva interrupted him, "so now send that card to the Graveyard."
"Expected some kind of interruption," Keiji said as he did as commanded, "but not an issue. I banish Bullet Spark from my Graveyard in order to Special Summon Diana the Light Spirit from my hand." A majestic, blonde woman in a flowing white gown appeared in front of him.
Diana the Light Spirit: LIGHT / Thunder / Level 4 / 1700 ATK / 1000 DEF
"Now, since my Bullet Spark was just banished, I can return it back to my hand," he said as he put the card back, "and since I control a Continuous Spell Card, I can immediately Special Summon it as well." A tiny bullet darted onto Keijis field, vibrating with blue energy.
Bullet Spark: LIGHT / Thunder / Level 4 / 1200 ATK / 1200 DEF
"Two weak monsters," Eva scoffed, "what now?"
"Now?" Keiji said cockily, "I bring in the big guns."
"Don't overstate your Gunners, I said you shouldn't take her lightly," Jeanie intervened, but her brother quickly shut her down.
"Not just a usual Gunner," he continued, "since I control a Continuous Spell Card, I can Tribute Summon my monster for one less tribute, meaning it only requires two now. So I tribute my Light Spirit and my Bullet Spark, to Tribute Summon my Boltedge Nuclear Gunner!"
The woman and the bullet disappeared, only to be replaced by a giant figure made of copper wire, nearly as tall as the skyscrapers surrounding them. A whole in its belly revealed a spinning, circular device glowing in orange energy. The monster itself carried a large sniper rifle made from copper, its bullets appearing to be larger than any of the players.
Boltedge Nuclear Gunner: LIGHT / Thunder / Level 10 / 3500 ATK / 3300 DEF
"This monster was created through the influence of a Crosspoint," Eva remarked, "Impressive, I give you that. Impressive, but not enough. Especially since there isn't even a Crosspoint left in it."
"So I had one at one point," Keiji replied, "thanks for confirming that for me."
"You generally appear to have issues with your memory, could that be?"
"In any case, where is it now? I'm sure you know that as well."
"Of course I do," Eva replied, "but I mean, why would I bother tell you."
"Boasting, I guess," Jeanie threw in, "or you could be a nice little bitch and just do it without all the fuss."
"I don't boast unless it doesn't matter, and especially not if you would want me to," the white-haired woman snapped back, "on that account: I activate my Trap Card Matter Dis-Motion!"
The air around Nuclear Gunner started to crackle, gradually starting to fade out of existance.
"Matter Dis-Motion," Eva explained, "banishes the target monster until your next Standby Phase. In exchange however, you can draw one card, and another additional one for each Matter Dis-Motion in my grave."
Keiji gritted his teeth as he drew his single card: "You're only delaying here, that's not gonna be a permanent solution."
"Who says I want a permanent solution, dearie?" Eva said, "These are my last few breaths I'll take on this earth. I wanna go out having fun, and what's the fun in mindlessly crushing you if I don't give you a semblance of hope?"
"Get off your high horse, bitch," Keiji continued, "I set one card and then I end my turn."
"During your End Phase," Eva continued, "I activate Splendid White. It allows me to send two Trap Cards with different names from my Deck to the grave and then Set two other different Trap Cards from my Deck to my field. Granted, they all have to have different names from all the Traps in my Graveyard." She revealed and sent Mirror Force and Magical Cylinder from her Deck to the grave, before setting Scalding White and Toxic White straight from her deck.
And just after she did that, a blinding flash of light emerged from her Trap Card.
Keiji could hear daddy screaming from outside the closet. He just hoped he wouldn't change his mind, open the door and beat Keiji up instead of just keeping him in the closet until he calmed down.
Not like that was good, one time it took daddy almost and entire day to calm down and let Keiji out of the closet. He was so thirsty after this, he was sure he could have died. Not like that would have been bad.
Keiji had done something bad to be put into the closet, he always did. Sometimes he knew what he'd done, like put too much spice in daddys food or forget to make his morning coffee on time so it was too hot when he drank it. Sometimes, like today, he didn't know. Daddy just came up to him and yelled at him, before hitting him and locking him in the closet. It's not like he needed much of a reason, sometimes daddy just got angry for no reason.
Right now, all Keiji could do was stand here and wait.
Keiji's eyes snapped back open, seeing that Jeanie and Daichi were by his side, violently shaking him.
"Oh dear lord, you're back with us," Jeanie breathlessly exclaimed, "what happened?"
"He just saw something," Eva answered, "that I dug deep out of his head. He probably didn't even know it was still in there."
"How did you do that?" Keiji asked.
"Don't get hung up on technicalities, dearie," Eva replied, "I can do it. Did it to your friend too, except I showed him my own memories and not his own."
"Why?"
"Asking for the reasons, how dull," Eva said, "why am I making your remember things from your past you tried so hard to forget? I can see you tried to drink all those bad thoughts away and it worked out in the end. Those memories became so blurry you can barely grasp them, making you question whether they are even real or not. I'm here to make them come back to you. And why, you ask? I already told you. For the fun. You ask for reason, but I hate to break it to you, bad things usually happen for one reason or for no reason at all. And that reason is fun."
"Take your turn you stone-cold bitch," Daichi snapped at her, while helping Keiji to his feet.
"Oh certainly dearie," she said, drawing her card and immediately placing it on the field. "I Set one card and end my turn."
"Then its my turn," Daichi continued, "I Normal Summon Gagagigo." A muscular humanoid figure with scaly skin and a lizards head and tail appeared in front of Daichi.
Gagagigo: WATER / Reptile / Level 4 / 1850 ATK / 1000 DEF
"You what?" Eva chuckled, "this is insultingly weak."
"Unlike you people," Daichi said, "I don't have any fancy-pants cards up my sleeve. Gagagigo, attack the bitch directly!" The monster leaped at the girl, ready to plant its fist in her face, but one of her Trap Cards flipped up to take the blow for her.
"I activate Draining Shield, this should be sufficient to dealing with you," she continued, putting on a bored facade, "it negates your attack and instead give me Life Points equal to your monsters ATK." A green barrier rose up around her, which absorbed the blow before turning into tiny sparks of light.
Eva: 4000 LP → 5850 LP
"From my hand," Daichi continued, "I activate the Quick-Play Spell Card Purification of the Heart! It allows me turn one of my Normal Monsters into a non-Effect Xyz Monster of my choosing, by using it and Purification as the materials!" The Spell Card flared blue, alongside the reptile monster, before they both turned into tiny orbs and spiraled into a galaxy-shaped portal.
"You don't have any fancy-pants cards up your sleeve, huh?" Keiji smiled, "that can't be right."
"Wasn't up my sleeve, was it?" he continued, but Jeanie quickly cut him off.
"He should've followed that up with 'until he met me'. His deck was horrible, but I tried to salvage it as much as I could."
"Xyz Summon!" Daichi continued, "Shed your stained past and become the savior your world desired! Rank 4, Gagagigo the Risen!" After the portal combusted, the new monster that appeared didn't look much different from the one that had left the field, except that it looked bigger, older, and wore gold and white armor over its green skin, which gave it a very regal appearance.
Gagagigo the Risen: WATER / Reptile / Xyz / Rank 4 / 2950 ATK / 2800 DEF / 2 materials
"Gagagigo the Risen, attack her directly!" Daichi immediately commanded his monster, which leaped into the air and kicked Eva straight in the chest, an impact that barely seemed to faze her however.
Eva: 5850 LP → 2900 LP
"Take that lucky hit while you can get away with it, dearie," she said, gritting her teeth, "I'm not gonna waste another one of my Trap Cards on you."
"Suit yourself to the damage then," Daichi replied, "I Set two cards face-down and end my turn."
"My turn," Eva said, "and I just Set one more card face-down and pass it on to the next one."
"Your turns go by fast," Jeanie said, as she drew her card, "at this point you're just padding time until you can Summon the big one."
"Come again?" Eva asked, feigning ignorance.
"Your boss monster, All-Devouring White requires ten Trap Cards in your Graveyard. You are just waiting until you can Summon it, because frankly speaking, there is no way your sort of play style would be feasible beyond that."
"Just wait and find out."
"Oh I won't, trust me," Jeanie continued, "I Normal Summon my Battleballoon – Party Blimp!" A small airship appeared over Jeanie, party lights draped all over it, catchy music blasting from its speakers.
Battleballoon – Party Blimp: FIRE / Machine / Level 4 / 1800 ATK / 0 DEF
Battleballon – Party Blimp: Level 4 → Level 9
"It will gain one level for each card that is in my hand, for as long as its on the field," Jeanie continued, "then, I activate its second effect by discarding one card: It will inflict 800 damage to you!"
Jeanie slotted one card into her Graveyard while her monster lined up a shot with a confetti cannon, but Eva interrupted her: "I activate Choking White! When yu activate a monster effect, I can send any Trap of my choosing from my Deck to the Grave in order to negate that effect and reduce your monsters ATK to 0."
She showed the card Burning White before inserting it into her graveyard slot, after which a blinding light emerged from her Trap Card.
042-627-8618
Stupid red marker.
Stupid ten digits.
Jeanie had been trying to erase the phone number from the paper for the past hour, but all that did was to smear it all over. Father didn't buy cheap pens, evidently.
Someone called him from that number earlier today, saying that he had information about Keenans whereabouts and that he would disclose them for money. If Jeanie would have been keeping count, he was the 186th guy calling with info about Keenan that would eventually turn out to be wrong. Luckily she didn't keep count, since 245th was a much more accurate number.
And just like father always did, he took the nearest piece of paper and the next best pen and scribbled the number all over it.
042-632-8510, now just a mash of red blurs.
Fucking red marker.
Usually Jeanie would just roll her eyes and continue her business as usual.
But there was no way she could return her report card with 042-632-8510 written all over its front side.
Battleballoon – Party Blimp: 1800 ATK → 0 ATK
Battleballoon - Party Blimp: Level 9 → Level 8
"Are you alright my goddess?" Daichi asked, kneeling by her side.
"Not pleasant, is it?" Keiji asked, with Jeanie wiping the tears from her eyes in response.
"So what, bitch?" she snapped at Eva, "my father is a dick, that's old hat."
"Doesn't make it any better to relive, does it?"
"Fuck off," Jeanie replied as she got back onto her feet, "the card I discarded for my Party Balloons effect was Xyz Mismatch. Which has a very special effect in my graveyard, which allows me to use a single monster as an Xyz Material to Summon a monster with a Rank equal to half its Level."
A second image of Party Blimp appeared next to the original one, before both turned red and spiraled into a galaxy-shaped portal.
"Xyz Summon! Get at the helm of my conquest and lead my glorious charge! Rank 4, Battleballoon – Vanguard Airship!" When the portal combusted, a small airship emerged from it, adorned with several flags bearing a crest that read 'BB', but not lacking guns either.
Battleballoon – Vanguard Airship: FIRE / Machine / Xyz / Rank 4 / 2000 ATK / 2000 DEF / 1 material
"What a fun little thing," Eva continued, "in response, I activate my Trap Card Toxic White. When you Special Summon a monster, I can inflict damage to you equal to that monsters ATK, also, if you should still control it during the End Phase, you will just take the same amount of damage a second time." A gooey white substance emerged from the edges of Vanguard Airship, slowly dripping down towards Jeanie, before a flash of blinding while light emerged from the Trap Card.
Jeanie found herself in a cathedral of sorts, sitting on a bench just a few meters away from two familiar faces.
Eva and Gorou, one of her homeless bodyguards.
"She's completely into the whole idea of a revolution," he said, "I don't know how you did it, but its amazing!"
"Oh don't mind my methods, dearie. I can be persuasive in ways the other party doesn't even notice," Eva chuckled.
"You sure don't want anything in return other than information about her?"
"That, and, for her to have her plan take place on the exact date and time I gave. Aside from that, nothing."
"Really? We could get you a bunch of gold from the palace when we raid it. A buddy already called dibs on the crown jewels, but I'm sure I can get those out of his hands as well."
"It's been years since I've last had material desires. But thank you for considering it."
"What's all this about either way? You come up and talk the Garbage Queen into revolution. It was honestly time someone did that, she had all this money and influence over her squad of homeless guys, but she had no idea what to do with us other than make us run errands."
"Blessed be the ignorant. And don't worry your little head about my motives, dearie. They won't concern you."
"Sounds good," Gorou replied, "I should get back, before she notices."
Jeanie: 4000 LP → 2000 LP
"Can you stop making us kiss the ground whenever you use your cards?" Keiji asked angrily as he helped his sister up for the second time.
"You bitch set me up," Jeanie pressed through her teeth, "you planned this from when we first met. All that talk about the poor, about failed opportunities and the failure of the government. All so that I create a distraction for the convergence? So nobody notices what's going on right under their nose?"
"Don't flatter yourself, dearie," Eva retorted, "you were just my backup plan, but turns out I was off well enough covering all my bases."
"I'm gonna make you pay," Jeanie continued, but Daichi stopped her before she could continue.
"Don't you see what she's going?" he said, "she getting you riled up and angry. She wants to you to make mistakes."
He then turned to Keiji: "And she's try to make you doubt yourself and feel awful, for the same purpose. She's playing with our heads so we cannot defeat her."
"Did you figure that out all by yourself, daddy?" Eva retorted, with Keiji shuddering at the mention of the word daddy.
"Shut up," Jeanie snapped, at both Eva and Daichi, "I know what I'm doing."
"Then take a deep breath," Daichi said, "and then do it. I know you can, you're the best."
Jeanie took a few seconds to focus herself on the duel, before she continued: "I activate the effect of Vanguard Airship. By discarding any number of cards, I can Rank it Up by that many Ranks plus two. So I discard three cards in order to Summon a Rank 9 monster!"
Jeanie sent all but one card from her hand to the Graveyard, as her Vanguard Airship turned into red energy and re-entered the galaxy-shaped portal.
"Rank-Up Xyz Change!" Jeanie yelled, "Aim your weapons at those in power and take away their privileges! Rank 9, Battleballoon – Raid Airship!" The portal combusted and a heavily armed airship descended from it. It had guns and cannons draped all over itself, along with metal appendages to perform ramming attacks. The letters 'BB' were spray painted on each side of it.
Battleballoon – Raid Airship: FIRE / Machine / Xyz / Rank 9 / 3400 ATK / 3000 DEF / 2 materials
"Denied," Eva simply said, "I activate my Trap Card Scalding White. If you Summon a monster, this card will immediately destroy it, then, if you do not control a monster with more ATK during your End Phase, will inflict damage to you equal to your destroyed monsters ATK. Which, by the way, is a lot more than you can bear."
With one white strike of light, the airship exploded in mid air, before the Trap Card yet again let out a blinding white light – except that it was Daichi that fainted this time.
Daichi was in his happy place.
The three guys lying on the other mattresses in the room seemed pretty dead to him, but right now, they were the best company he could wish for.
He could swear that there was something crawling beneath him that was biting into his leg, but in his happy place he couldn't care less.
For at least a few minutes he could forget that he was three months behind on his mortgage.
He could forget everything he did just for a few minutes in his happy place.
That when he got home, maybe his wife and daughter had finally left him. Maybe his landlord would change the lock, so he couldn't get in with his key. Maybe another customer would cancel on him. Maybe the one he wrote a bill to last month would also vanish like the last three and he wouldn't get payed from that one either. Maybe the police would find him here and throw him into a cell.
But that all didn't matter.
At least for a few minutes.
"I'm alright, I'm fine," Daichi said, as he noticed that Jeanie and Keiji were struggling to get him back to his feet.
"I thought you need a little bit of a take-down, after being so smug just then," Eva said, "how does the lowest point of your life feel like?"
"Awful?" Daichi said, but just shrugged it off, "but it's not like I didn't know that. I was the most awful person I could be. I hurt my wife, I hurt my daughter and I hurt myself. But unlike the other two, I never tried to forget it. It's what makes me who I am today. Did it make me a better person? Maybe, maybe not. I cannot change it, so I might as well own it."
"Awfully sassy, are you?" Eva replied.
"You keep bothering with him, while I finish you off, alright?" Jeanie said, "nice little speech there man. You're right. I might not be ready to really own my father's mistakes but… I can consider it."
"Civil wars turn into group therapy," Eva joked, "but by all means, go on."
"You're awfully sassy today, did I tell you that?" Jeanie retorted.
"And you think I don't have all the reason to be?"
"No. You wanna know why?" Jeanie said, "because I've been keeping count. You got ten Trap Cards in your Grave, just enough to Summon your ace. But it's not like I'll let you. I'll lock them away where you'll never reach them! From my hand, I activate the Spell Card Desperate Stand!"
A graveyard portal opened above the duelists and Raid Airship unceremoniously crashed back onto the field as a big pile of debris.
Battleballoon – Raid Airship: FIRE / Machine / Xyz / Rank 9 / 3400 ATK / 3000 DEF
Battleballoon – Raid Airship: 3400 ATK → 0 DEF
"Desperate Stand brings any monster from my Graveyard back to the field, but it makes its ATK zero."
"And?" Eva asked.
"And now, I'll show you why it was a really bad idea to get me involved in all of this shit. I use my Rank 9 Raid Airship with no Xyz Materials, to reconstruct the Overlay Network! Rank-Up Xyz Change!" The debris turned into red energy and spiraled into a galaxy-shaped portal. "When the masses rise up, channel their anger and become the beacon of rebellion they need! Rank 10, Battleballoon – Revolution Airship!"
The portal combusted and a gigantic airship descended from it. Its metal construction resembled an aircraft carrier and was apparently heavy enough that it had to be carried by two balloons instead of one. It's underside was lined with guns and flamethrowers, all taking aim at Eva. The letters 'BB' were printed on the sides of the balloons in golden paint.
Battleballoon – Revolution Airship: FIRE / Machine / Xyz / Rank 10 / 3500 ATK / 3000 DEF / 1 material
"You avoided Scalding White with this. What else?" Eva asked unimpressed.
"Now, I will destroy your entire game plan," Jeanie said, "when Revolution Airship is Summoned through Xyz Change, it will attach all cards in all the Graveyards to itself as material."
"You what?" Daichi asked bewildered, and Keiji just looked at her in disbelief.
"You heard that right," Jeanie said, "I'm gonna take the ten Traps from your Grave, so you will not be able to Summon your Ritual!"
Revolution Airship opened two doors on its underside, revealing two magnet cannons which fired at the four player's Duel Disks.
"That is one splendid plan," Eva said, still as smug as before, "it's really sad how much it won't work. I activate my last remaining Trap Card: Mists of the Altar."
An ominous fog spread on the field as her card took effect.
"With Mists of the Altar, I can send a Ritual Spell from my Deck to the Graveyard in order to immediately activate its effects. I choose to send Ever White."
"Shit," Jeanie said, before white light darted out of Ever Whites Duel Disk.
"I can banish ten Trap Cards with different names from my Graveyard, in order to use them for a Ritual Summon. The white light will cover the earth and destroy you while you're too blind to see. Ritual Summon, Level 10. All-Devouring White!"
A large white orb of light appeared in the sky above the group, slowly sprouting legs. Six, to be exact. Two arms with large mantis claws, a spider body, a cone-like head filled with three lines of razor-sharp teeth. It was the monster that had ambushed them earlier in Jeanies airship.
All-Devouring White: LIGHT / Fiend / Ritual / Level 10 / ? ATK / 0 DEF
All-Devouring White: ? ATK → 10000 ATK
After the Ritual Summoned ended, Revolution Airships magnet cannons drew the remaining cards out of all players Graveyards, accumulating a large cluster of Overlay Units in the process.
Battleballoon – Revolution Airship: 1 material → 13 materials
Nobody paid any attention to that however. All three duelists opposite of the Ritual Monster just stared at it, realizing that Jeanies efforts to keep it away were futile.
This was the monster that defeated Yuito while he controlled a Crosspoint-powered monster. And nobody had any idea how it did it.
"Well, well," Eva went on, "since rage didn't work on you and fear just… somehow worked on you, how about we try… the horror of truth."
Her monster gave off a blinding flash of light, causing Keiji to drop to his knees and pass out.
He found himself standing in an amusement park, next to a large water fountain. Some very serious guys were standing around it, guarding it to be more exact. Inside the fountain he saw a child, maybe two or three years old, just sitting there and playing with the water like children do.
A few steps over, he saw a mother with her daughter at a cotton candy stand, with a salesman who was trying his hardest to hide his annoyance.
This whole setting seemed so awfully familiar to him, even though he couldn't quite place it at first.
It took a few minutes until the mother and the daughter turned away from the cotton candy stand back to the boy in the fountain, the girl now with a huge puff of pink cotton candy in her hands.
But as soon as they laid eyes on the fountain, the mothers face fell.
She let go of her daughters hand and ran around it, saying the name "Keenan" over and over again, first confused, then desperate.
This was when Keiji realized that that was the day. The day when he was taken.
But he didn't understand it.
Young Keiji was still sitting right there.
In the middle of the founding, looking around in confusion as the guards and his mother scrambled to find him, screaming his name all over the place.
"Put the park on lockdown!" he heard one of the guards scream, as they ran off in different directions to find the child that wasn't even gone.
When the commotion was perfect and all the guests and guards were running about, a white haired girl slowly walked up to the fountain, picked up the boy, and walked away, with all the people looking right through her as if she wasn't even there.
When Keiji regained his senses, he didn't even struggle to get up anymore. He started at Eva, with all the hatred he could bear, his eyes and face red from anger and tears.
It took him some time before he cooled down enough to speak, but he eventually managed: "You… you did this to me."
