Series 1, Episode 44~ House of Yesterday
The election was a top priority now in the house Amber was going to look her best, she was sure making that at least Camilla out of her two roommates looked hot as hell too. They would help her promote her brand. Unfortunately for Camilla that meant heels to school until the vote along with short tight skirts, with her normal thigh-high black socks. Her hair was curled and then brushed out so it fell around her face in a natural effortless way and her makeup was done naturally too (they were going to school after all) but Amber focused her efforts on accentuating Camilla's good features like her eyes and lips. Camilla couldn't say she didn't look bad but she felt it was too much effort in the morning, and she was especially annoyed Nina had managed to slip out before Amber woke up so she had to endure the process alone.
Grumbling Camilla was finally released from Ambers clutches and was headed to breakfast, hating how she now announced her arrival to everyone with every click of her heels. Thankfully she was distracted by this as she saw Nina and Fabian pulling the hallway mirror away from the wall, raising to her toes she sneaked down the remaining stairs and watched them for a moment.
"Is there anything written on the back?" Fabian asked, and Camilla knew what they were up to immediately. Nina, Fabian and Patricia had found another clue after school yesterday and it had something to do with mirrors – though Camilla didn't know for sure her brother didn't show her the note in their dinner catch up.
Nina let out a sigh, "No,"
Camilla let Fabian let out a frustrated sigh before she spoke up, putting on her best imitation of Victor as she said, "Now, what do you think you are doing?"
This caused the two to jump and look her way as she burst into peals of laughter.
"Oh haha, thanks Cam," Fabian muttered at his sister.
"I'm sorry but I couldn't resist," Camilla giggled as she jumped off the last step and clip-clopped over to her twin brother and future sister in law. "Whatcha doing?"
"Clue solving," Nina explained absentmindedly.
"Look beyond the world through glass…" Fabian spoke up as if to prove Nina's statement, "beyond the world? What does that mean exactly?"
"I'd love to help but Amber has claimed me for the day," Camilla muttered, pointing to her outfit as if that proved her point.
"What are you three doing?" Victors booming voice spoke almost the exact same words Camilla had used to scare her friend's moments before, of course, this caused her to bit her lip as she tried not to laugh. It seemed her and Victor thought similarly.
"I was eh…" Nina jumped to action as Camilla stood to one side, her shoulders shaking from silent laughter, "Just admiring this…" Nina rubbed the mirror as she kept talking and Victor prowled down the stairs as Camilla finally controlled her laughter, "is it roman? Or Victorian? I'm kind of an amateur antique collector."
"Always snooping…" Victor spookily spoke looking from Nina to the Rutter twins to her right. of course, he didn't get a response to his statement other than the three putting fake smiles. "Get off to school!" They didn't need to be told twice, Nina pushing Fabian out the door – Camilla not moving to the door but to the kitchen area as she hadn't had breakfast yet and like hell, she was going to school without a cup of tea in her system. "Oh, and Miss Martin, Miss Rutter…" the two girls paused from their walks to glance round at Victor, "it's very public-spirited of you to visit the sick and elderly, however, try and restrict your visits in future to weekends only."
"What? What visits? I don't know what you're on about?" Nina started to babble but Camilla had lived under the same roof as victor long enough now she didn't do anything but cross her arms. All this meant was Victor had learned about Sarah – she didn't think that was something they needed to worry about just yet anyway.
"Emily Grant?" Victor spoke looking from the babbling American to the female twin who didn't look fazed what so ever about what he was saying, though that didn't surprise him. Camilla was one of the few students who never seemed to have been scared of him.
"Oh! Emily… yeah…" Nina sounded defeated to be caught out but went along with what the man was saying, "weekends only, got it." with that she left with Fabian and Camilla sent a sweet smile Victors way before carefully turning on her high heels and making her way to the kitchen.
She had hoped the kitchen would be empty but her least favourite couple at the moment were occupying it. They didn't seem to mind Camilla's company sending her smiles as she headed to the kettle – ignoring their 'cute' fight as Mick started eating the muffins Mara had made for her election campaign.
"These Mara Muffins get my vote!" Mick exclaimed through a mouthful of muffin.
"Mick!" Mara laughed, "If you keep eating them, we won't have any left for the campaign. Anyway, all that sugar isn't good for your training."
Camilla bit her lip as she tried not to laugh, Jerome had told her he gave Mara the envelope they had found and the girl wasn't subtle in trying to bring up the news she knew.
"I don't have to be a food fascist just because I'm in training Mara," Mick informed his girlfriend.
"Yeah well… you haven't been doing much training since you got back," Mara pointed out and Camilla was glad to hear the kettle click, she quickly poured the water into her travel mug and added a dash of milk before screwing on the lid, all but running – as fast as she could – out of the room just in time to hear Mara say, "Mick I know."
That was one awkward situation she managed to avoid.
Camilla hated the fact she had been Amber-fyed, she kept pulling on her skirt as she walked through the halls of the school trying to find someone, anyone she knew so the stares and whispers weren't so obvious. Thankfully her wish was answered as she saw Jerome, tottering over to him as fast as she could.
"Thank god I've found you!" she muttered as she reached him, "I can't believe Amber talked me into this, I feel like I'm on display." She let out a shaky breath before looking at him, "do you have your jumper or anything I can borrow?"
If she was expecting a response from Jerome all she got was him looking at her gobsmacked. So, she did what any reasonable girl would do and hit his shoulder. "Oi! J, come on!"
Jerome blinked for a second before he finally computed what she had said, unbuttoning his jumper and handed it to her, smiling as she wrapped herself in it. "It's funny when this jumper is longer than the skirt Amber put me in," Camilla muttered.
"Well, I think you look beautiful," Jerome spoke softly, causing Camilla to glance up at him again. There was no joking in his tone or is expression.
"Oh, shut up," Camilla muttered, looking away as her face flushed. Just as she did a sudden wave of dizziness washed over her and she had a flash of something in her mind.
It was of the house, Anubis house, but there was a little girl at the end of the hallway the boy's bedrooms whereon. She was counting her eyes shut. Coming from Fabian's room and the kitchen came two adults – her parents Camilla assumed. They were playing a game of some sort and the parents froze every time the girl turned around. It was a nice memory? It had to be a memory?
"Camilla, Milly!" a worried voice echoed through her head and she opened her eyes to see Jerome holding onto her around her waist tightly as if she was just about to fall over at any second.
"What happened?" Camilla asked softly.
"You almost fainted I think…" Jerome asked concerned, "We should take you back to the house…"
"No!" Camilla shook her head, and stood up, "I'm fine, I promise."
Jerome didn't look to believe her but let her take his hand and drag him towards their first-period class, trying not to feel slightly proud that she was wearing his jumper loud and proud on top of the hot outfit Amber had put her it.
It would ward off any unwanted eyes he knew.
Mara and Mick were ahead of the two as they entered the class, and Camilla rolled her eyes as Jerome stormed over to Mara instantly allowing herself to be dragged with him mainly because she needed something to help her balance. "Mara," Jerome started, once they had reached Camilla's normal seat nice to Amber, allowing his fake girlfriend to sit down but still hear his conversation, "Have you confronted him about that letter?" Jerome asked, gesturing towards Mick.
"I wouldn't say confront, Jerome," Mara spoke glancing at Camilla who sent her a fake smile making it clear she was listening in and knew of the letter they were discussing, "we talked about it."
"And?"
"And nothing," Mara spoke softly.
"The guy was keeping secrets from you," Jerome pointed out his little green Jealous monster clearly coming to the surface.
"He had his reasons," Mara explained, before turning and walking away to sit with Mick. Jerome let out a groan and Camilla grabbed his hand to try to reassure him. She understood why he was annoyed but she could also see his meddling was not going to get him this girl…. She just didn't know how to tell Jerome that.
The boy sent her a weak smile squeezing her hand back before he could say anything Amber dumped a load of posters onto the shared desk of herself and Camilla causing the fake couple to look at her.
"Thanks for all your help in this Campaign guys," Amber spoke up, talking to Nina, Fabian and Camilla, "Camilla is the only one to dress to standard and even try to help me, but I've only had to struggle all the way from the Art room with all this!" Amber moaned loudly.
"I thought Alfie was going to be your Campaign Manager?" Mara asked from the back of the room.
"Not anymore…" Amber commented glancing at Alfie, causing Jerome and Camilla to turn their heads to see him slouch back in his chair.
"Jerome?!" Mara spoke up quickly, "Are you free to talk about our Campaign?" she asked.
Jerome glanced at Camilla who couldn't help herself as she pulled a face at Amber causing the blonde to giggle, this caused a smile to creep onto his face. With that he turned to Mara speaking in a sarcastic tone, "You know what Mara, no need." This caused heads to turn in the classroom, "you and Mick can carry on with your smoothy yucky-ness and I'll do everything. Okay?"
"That's very kind of you…" Mara slowly spoke.
"Yeah, see the thing is I am not kind, and I am not a sucker so you can do it yourself." He turned to Camilla and sent her a smile, "I have realised my loyalties go against my heart and if Camilla is backing Amber, I guess she can have me as her Manager."
Camilla couldn't help the grin that formed on her face and was rewarded with an equally cheeky smile back from Jerome as he walked forward to where she and Amber where. He lent down and kissed Camilla's cheek and whispered, "too much?"
"No, just perfect, I think she has to realise how hard life is with just Mick," Camilla whispered back, but from how close their faces where it looked simply like sweet nothings.
"Amber," Jerome stood up and looked to the blonde, "I say we celebrate later; you have clearly won this thing!" Amber looked at him in confusion before looking to Camilla, "I am your new Campaign manager."
"Commiserations loser…" Camilla made sure to add sweetly looking back to Mara who looked flabbergasted. Amber, on the other hand, was beaming, she had both Jerome and Camilla on her side, she was defiantly going to win now.
Camilla could feel Jerome's eyes on her during class with Mrs Andrews and she tried to hide yet another dizzy spell with her being stressed over the question sheet they had been given. Instead, another memory of sort flashed through her mind.
It was of Anubis house again, but coming from Fabian's room was a young boy, in old clothes. He was looking up and down the corridor before he raced to the kitchen. She followed him to see the young girl again sat around the dining room table with the two adults from before.
"Don't stand unceremonious Victor," the man spoke, causing Camilla to realise this memory was of someone who knew Victor when he was a child. "plenty to go around," the man spoke talking about the food in front of them. "tuck in."
With that, the two children shared a secretive smile before young Victor sat down and joined the family.
"Miss Rutter!" an urgent voice brought her back to reality and she saw the class standing around her, Fabian looking worried and Jerome looking more scared than she had ever seen him before, her head was on his lap. Somehow, she had fallen to the floor from her chair.
"W-what?" Camilla groaned.
"You fainted…" Amber softly spoke from beside Camilla, the girl finally noticing Amber clutching her hand. "Are you alright?" the fear could be heard in the blonde's voice but Camilla could see she was trying to put on a brave face for Camilla. Camilla squeezed her friends' hand as if to reassure her.
"I'm fine… I just… I missed breakfast this morning that's all, a little light-headed." Camilla tried to come up with an excuse, something Fabian saw right through from the expression on his face.
"I think you need to go to the nurse's office, just to be safe," Mrs Andrews commented in her stern no-nonsense way, "Jerome will you help her?" she asked, it was clear he was going to be going with her no matter what the teacher said.
"I'm fine," Camilla whispered to the extremely worried face of Amber as she carefully sat up and let the girl help her to her feet as Jerome raced around collecting both his and Camilla's stuff. Now the main drama was over the rest of the class had gone back to their desks.
"You promise?" Amber asked the worry thick in her voice.
"I promise."
"Good, because I need you for this election, I don't know what I'd do without you." Amber honestly spoke causing a smile to appear on Camilla's face as she pulled the girl into a hug.
"Come on Milly, let's get you looked over," A concerned voice spoke up from behind her and she turned to see Jerome waiting, she let go of Amber and allowed Jerome to put an arm around her in a way of supporting her and he lead her out of the classroom and towards the nurses office.
The Nurse was an old no-nonsense woman who the moment Jerome explained that Camilla had fainted had put her into the bed in her office and told her she would be staying there until Lunchtime. Jerome, of course, had come up with some huge story as to why he had to stay with Camilla but she knew it was more of an excuse for him to skip classes.
Camilla glanced at him from the bed, he was sat in the uncomfortable guest chair a book in his hand. When he was like this, he looked almost handsome in the traditional sense, but he was too calm to be the Jerome Camilla knew so well. There was something about the gleam in his eye whenever he was plotting or pranking that she couldn't help think made him Jerome and without it, he was just another handsome boy.
"Are you going to stare at me or are you going to ask me whatever it is that's on your mind?" Jerome asked without looking up from his book.
"How did you?"
"I can almost hear the whirring of your brain from here," He joked, closing the book and looking at her. Clearly waiting for whatever she was about to ask.
"Why did you do it?" she asked softly, sitting up so they could talk properly.
Jerome paused, the smile on his face falling. Instead of answering Camilla's question he asked her a new one, one she hadn't been expecting along with the sheer raw emotion that came with it. "it never stops hurting, does it?" he asked, glancing down at the book in his hand.
"What?"
"Giving someone the best of you, and watching them choose someone else," Jerome explained looking to the girl on the bed.
Camilla's expression softened; she finally understood his mood change in class. His emotions were all over the place doing everything for a girl who didn't see him.
"no," Camilla spoke up after a moment her voice cracking a little, "it never stops hurting, but one day, you will see her smiling at someone and just be happy she is happy." Jerome seemed to take in Camilla's words with a nod of his head and a curious look. Thankfully he didn't push her anymore, neither of them wanting to open their raw wounds even if they were the only two, they could talk to about these things.
"You know," Jerome started once again causing Camilla to glance over at him, "there is a lot of things about you that don't add up these days." Camilla frowned but let him continue, "secrets. Weird things. What is it about you that you won't tell me and Alfie?"
Camilla bit her lip, not wanting to tell him that Alfie was involved now to some degree, she was still keeping secrets from people like Nina and Amber. If fact the only person who truly knew everything about her was Fabian but he was her twin, he was the only person who could understand her. "I can't…"
"You mean, you won't," Jerome frowned.
"No, J," Camilla took a deep breath and send him a sad smile, "I can't. How can I tell you something when I myself don't understand it." She looked him over, she could see the worry in his eyes worry about her. She knew she was dealing with a lot but she didn't realise that it had affected her so much that Jerome of all people was worried about her. Camilla leaned forward and grabbed his hand, Jerome entwining their fingers, "I promise you, once I have some facts… I will tell you everything."
Jerome squeezed her hand causing a smile to appear on Camilla's face, he was happy enough with that for now which was a relief, "please tell me you have someone now though, in whatever confusion you have going on."
Camilla nodded her head, "I have a big brother who would never let me deal with anything alone. You don't need to worry about me right now."
"I am always going to worry about you, Milly." Jerome told the girl earnestly, "you deserve someone to worry about you other than your brother."
The rest of the morning went smoothly, and when her next dizzy spell hit Camilla, Jerome wasn't there, the morning break bell had rung and he had decided to go talk to Alfie while he could so Camilla was alone. This time she recognised the sensation and she accepted it. Something was happening at Anubis house that involved Victor, all her flashbacks and weird ghost moments were always involving Victor. The house was trying to tell her something and she was for once ready to accept the information.
The dizzy spell showed her young Victor sat at the bottom of the stairs crying. Camilla wanted to approach the boy and comfort him but knew she couldn't, she could only watch on. The memory then faded; Camilla then found herself stood in a familiar office with the boy. Behind the desk which was being used as a lab was a man who looked exactly like Victor. So, she could only assume it was Victor's father.
"But she's my friend," young Victor spoke softly.
"she is not your friend." His father venomously spoke as he poured god knows what into a test-tube, "your job is to discover where they have hidden the cup of Ankh." After speaking Victor's father took a drink from the tube causing Camilla to shudder in disgust.
"I've tried daddy," Young Victor spoke softly.
The look his father gave him was one Camilla wished she would never see on Her Victor's face. It was cold and evil and one no child should ever be on a receiving end of. "You are to address me as Sir!" he yelled at his son. Camilla wanted nothing more than to run to the young victor and hug him, but as she went to hold onto the doorknob to stop herself from getting angry her hand went through it, knowing she couldn't comfort the boy in any way even if she wanted too. She could only watch as Victor was yelled at by his father. "You useless piece of nothing! Find out where they have hidden the cup, or I will send you to the orphanage!"
Young Victor's hand went to something around his neck out of fear and Camilla gasped… it was the pendant she had seen in his office, the one with the Isis symbol on it, the one she was drawn too. Victor had had it since he was a child… what did it mean?
Camilla gasped as she heard crying and walked out of the room to see herself back where she had started, with a young Victor crying at the bottom of the stairs. As she walked down them a young girl – Sarah she was assuming now – approached Victor.
"What did he do to you, Victor?" Sarah asked her friend.
Victor got to his feet and wiped his eyes. Camilla recognised the look on his face, having seen all the boys in the house put it on at one point or another. He was simply a little boy who was afraid… who was about to lash out. "You useless piece of nothing!" the boy repeated his father's words but the venom wasn't in them like they had been before, not that little Sarah knew that from the expression on her face. "tell me where your parents hid it or I'll send you to the orphanage!"
"I don't know!" Sarah begged, "I don't know where they put it!"
"I don't believe you!" Young Victor screamed!
With the scream, Camilla was catapulted out of her vision. She sat up gasping and looked around the room. She was alone in the nurse's office with a new understanding of her caretaker… "Oh, Victor…" was all she could mutter softly to herself as she tried to compute what she had been shown by the house. "What a plot twist this is…"
