"Turn everything up!" The Doctor shouted at the GameStation programmers as they exited the TARDIS. "All transmitters, full power, wide open, now! Do it!"
"What does this do?" Asked a man as he turned around to obey.
"Stops the Daleks from transmatting on board." The Doctor answered. "How did you get on? Did you contact Earth?"
"We tried to warn them, but all they did was suspend our license cos we stopped the programs." The man answered.
"Then the planet's just sitting there, defenseless." The Doctor looked over and noticed the girl on the far left. "Lynda, what are you still doing on board? I told you to evacuate everyone!" He chided the man he was just speaking to.
"She wouldn't go." The man snipped.
"I didn't wanna leave you." Lynda chimed in.
"There weren't enough shuttles anyway, or I wouldn't be here." The woman next to the first man said. "we've got about a hundred people stranded on Floor Zero."
"Oh, my god. The fleet is moving." Warned the man. "They're on their way!"
"Wot we gonna do?" Rose asked the Doctor. He paused a moment, thinking hard, then, looking around, an idea came to mind.
Rose stood stuck still as they all discussed the Doctor's plan; the Delta Wave. Her heart almost broke at the excited look he had, the hope they were going to win was still lit in his eyes. Helping Jack with the extrapolator took her mind off the hurt a bit, but when the rest of them began to discuss battle plans, she had to fight hard to keep it together. They were all the walking dead to her. That thought turned Rose cold. Thankfully, the Doctor called her over to help him build the device and she was able to distract herself from this nightmare. The rest of the group broke off and started to move swiftly to recruit others on Floor Zero, but Lynda made her way over to the Doctor.
"I just wanna say… thanks, I suppose." Lynda told him, clearly nervous. Although, Rose knew those nerves were not about the fight ahead. "And, I'll do my best!"
"You and me both." The Doctor chuckled. "Stay brave out there." He patted her arm, much to Lynda's disappointment, and off she went.
Rose was suddenly hit with the memory of jealousy. The first time around, she was bitter about the girl who had so clearly fallen for the Doctor, not to mention the Doctor flirting back. This time, however, he brushed her off. He hadn't even noticed her in the way he had last time. Rose wondered why, but quickly stuffed that away for later examination when Jack walked towards them with a purpose.
"It's been fun." Jack said to them cheerfully, but the smile quickly vanished from his lips. "But I guess this is goodbye."
"Don't talk like that!" Rose said, but she stopped short. She knew this was the last time she'd see him for a long time. John had explained what happened to Jack after they'd left him and, as much as she didn't want to leave him behind like that, she knew she couldn't change it. She wouldn't give him an empty promise, she wouldn't dare do that to him. "This isn't goodbye." She promised, knowing that for a fact. She swore to herself in that moment that no matter what happened in this timeline, she would see him again.
"Rose." He said, cupping her face. "You are worth fighting for." He placed a small kiss on her lips. She hoped he couldn't feel her trembling. Then, he moved toward the Doctor. "Wish I had never met you, Doctor!" He said with a grin before cupping the Doctor's face as well. "I was much better off as a coward." He gave the Doctor the same small kiss, then placed a hand on each of their shoulders and squeezed gently, steeling himself for a fight. "See ya in hell!"
Rose watched him bound away, a tear escaping against her will. The Doctor took a step toward her and wiped it away with his thumb. She looked up at him and drank him in. Those ice blue eyes she'd fallen for were now begging her, but for what she didn't know. The Doctor looked away first, returning to the only plan he had. Rose watched him for a moment before following suit.
They sat in silence for a few minutes. Rose stripped the wires while the Doctor worked on building the Delta Wave. She ran over the sequence of events in her head over and over. Mickey already knew about the whole situation, so convincing him to help her wasn't going to be the issue. It was convincing her mum that was gonna be hard. She needed her mum to cooperate so that she would get the truck that would open the TARDIS up.
"Penny for your thoughts?" Came the Doctor's voice. She looked up at him, but he was still working on the machine.
"Wotcha mean?" She asked.
"You look deep in thought over there, wires can't be that hard to strip, so clearly your mind is on something else." He replied, reading her as easily as a book.
"I was just thinkin'..." She said, remembering what she said last time. "I mean, obviously, ya can't, but you've got a time machine. Why can't you go back to last week and warn them or somethin'?"
"Soon as the TARDIS lands, in that second, I become a part of events. Stuck in the timeline."
"Yeah, I figured." She said weakly.
"There's another thing the TARDIS could do." The Doctor said after a moment. "It could take us away. We could leave. Let history take its course. We go to Marbella in 1989."
"You'd never do that, tho." She answered simply.
"No, but you could ask." He said, looking up to hold her gaze. "Never even occurred to you, did it?"
"I'd never do that, either." She replied. His blue eyes bore into her, shining with pride and affection. They shared a small smile. Just then, the computer whirred to life around them, catching the Doctor's attention.
"The Delta Wave's started building. How long does it need?" He immediately jumped up and ran to the computers. Rose trailed behind him. She tried to keep up, match his speed as well as his excitement, but she felt like she was running in a nightmare, getting nowhere. When she reached him, his face fell and he put his head in his hands.
"How bad is it?" She choked out, hoping it didn't sound as terrible as she felt.
He sat still for a few more seconds, then suddenly jumped up, eyes bright. "Rose Tyler, you're a genius!" he cried as he stood, smashing a kiss on her forehead. "We can do it! If I use the TARDIS to cross my own timeline… Yes!" He shot off for the TARDIS.
Rose couldn't help but hesitate. Before, she followed his lies blindly, but now she had to do it knowing there was every possibility that this would all go horribly wrong. She took a breath and reminded herself that Bad Wolf had still been everywhere, in all of time and space the message still showed up. She had to believe in Bad Wolf. She had to believe in herself. She plastered on a look of determination and ran after him
"Hold that one down and keep position." He ordered her, pointing to a button which she immediately pressed down on. He got to work on the computer, surely enabling Emergency Program One. "If I'm very clever, and I'm more than clever, I'm brilliant, I might just save the world. Or rip it apart."
"I'd go for the first one." Rose retorted automatically, earning her a quick smile from the Doctor.
"Now, I've just got to go and power up the GameStation. Hold on!" He started sprinting for the door.
"Doctor!" She cried before she could stop herself. He turned around to her expectantly. "I… just…. Hurry back." She finished lamely.
For a moment, she saw it, the break in his façade. But just as quickly as it had come, he was gone. The motor started whirring and groaning and Rose took her hand off the button, walking to the doors. She placed her had on the wood.
"I'm coming back." She whispered. "Don't you worry."
