"Rei, what we went through together, did it meant anything ? Were you trying to be nice to me or am I suppose to believe you really felt anything for me ?"
"Ikari-kun, I'm sorry."
"You know, if you asked me for dinner right now... I'll probably accept. I cannot lie by saying that I don't feel anything anymore."
"And what am I suppose to say now ? That everything will go back to what it was before ? That we can be lovers again like those past months didn't exist at all ? Shinji, grow up. You know it is not possible. We were happy together but it has ended for a reason and now, it's too late to go back."
"I know. But there's one last thing I need to say to you, Rei. Close your eyes."
Rei closed her eyes, never knowing they would never be open again, and Shinji waited five seconds before drawing his gun from his pocket.
He shot her in the head. He knew that the first time was enough but he needed to shot two more bullets, to end the pain in his chest.
"Ich liebe dich, mein Schatz."
He pointed his gun at his own mouth, never trembling. He shot only one bullet this time.
That day, Tokyo-3 lost two of the three kids that saved mankind. It was not eldritch abominations that killed them. It was the most powerful human emotions : love and sadness.
