A/N: Whoopsies here's another Kyoya Ootori fanfiction. I just love the guy too goddamn much. The girl is Rin Shibuya from Idolm ster.
School was the same every single day for Kyoya Ootori. Every day, he would sit in the same class, in the same seat, watching the same teachers come and go each period. They'd go over the same material multiple times for the kids who couldn't get it, but they were all simple and easy for Kyoya to learn. It was the same simple routine: go to school, learn, go home, study. Perhaps other kids would be playing with each other but not Kyoya. He needed to focus on his studies. He had got through the past years by doing this so his fourth year in elementary school shouldn't be any different.
"Hello, um are you Kyoya Ootori?" The little black-haired boy looked up from the book he was reading to see a girl with striking green eyes giving him a nervous smile.
"Yes," he said, "And you are?"
"I'm Kirari Hoshiya," the girl introduced herself, "Um, this is my first day at Ouran Academy, and the teacher said to talk to you."
Kirari Hoshiya. She must be the daughter of Daichi and Mizuki Hoshiya. Yes, there's no doubt about it. She looked like an exact younger copy of the A-list actress Mizuki Hoshiya, except for the eyes. There was no mistaking that those eyes came from Daichi Hoshiya, one of the best directors in the filming industry. Together, the two created a multinational mass media company that produces many movies and television shows as well as gives young aspiring directors the opportunity to create their own short-films and movies. Very powerful and influential people. It would be a smart move to stay on their daughter's good side.
"Oh right," Kyoya closed his book and got up from his seat, "I guess you want a tour of the school?"
Kirari shook her head. "No, I, uh, I kinda already wandered around the school before class started."
"I see. So what is it that you need from me?" Kyoya questioned.
"Uh, well, you see, the teacher said that I could also go to you if I'm behind and need help," Kirari said, nervously twisting a lock of hair around her finger, "And I'm really struggling with English. Could you tutor me?"
"Sure."
"Great! We can do it at my house if you'd like."
If her parents are there, then perhaps if he can help his father strike a partnership of some sort. Kyoya agreed but little did he know, this would be the start of a great friendship.
|| Five Years Later... ||
"Kyoya! How was school?"
"Hello Mizuki-san." It has been five years since the first day Kyoya had been to the Hoshiya household. There hasn't been a day since then where Kyoya hasn't been there. "School was well, thank you for asking."
Kirari strolled past Kyoya, into the kitchen, and gave her mother a quick hug. "Hi, mom. How was filming?"
"Filming went fine. I managed to get all of my scenes cleared and approved, so that's why I'm home early. Your poor father, however, is still stuck there 'till probably nightfall, so be sure to let him relax when he gets home."
"Of course," Kirari agreed. She grabbed a plate of apples that Mizuki had been cutting earlier before grabbing a hold of Kyoya's arm. "Kyoya and I will be studying in my room, Mom."
"I'll bring up oranges slices for you two later," Mizuki called out after them.
"Thank you!" Kirari replied as she walked up to the stairs to her room, Kyoya in tow.
Even after spending five years with them, Kyoya still found the Hoshiya family quite odd. The first time Kyoya had come to this house, Kirari's mother had also been there. Kyoya wasn't sure what he was expecting when he had come, but what had happened was definitely not it. Mizuki had been cooking in the kitchen, no chefs or cooks insight. Then her husband came walking into the kitchen, and after sharing a loving kiss with his wife, he began to set up the table. Kirari called out to them and introduced them to Kyoya, he was greeted by so much enthusiasm and acceptance that-although it may be strange to say-was a bit overwhelming for Kyoya. Kirari told them that he was only here to tutor her for a bit, but they insisted that he stayed for dinner-and so he did.
Dinner was another strange experience. Unlike a meal at his house, dinner at the Hoshiya household was quite energetic. Kirari first told her parents how school was that day before Mizuki and Daichi went on to share their own stories of the day. After a few laughs about something funny that happened on Daichi's set, everyone turned their attention to Kyoya.
|| Five Years Ago... ||
"So, Kyoya. Your family is in the medical business, yes?" Daichi had asked.
"Yes sir, as well as the police force," Kyoya replied.
"Interesting. I haven't spoken to Yoshiro in years. Do you think I could get some security guards from your family?"
"Yes sir, my father would love to work with you-"
"Alright, enough business talk at the table, boys," Mizuki chided, "Daichi the boy is only in fourth grade, and you want to talk business deals with him?" She then turned to Kyoya. "Ignore him, Kyoya. The man would probably live in his office at the company if I didn't force him to come home."
"Now that is a lie and you know it," Daichi protested, but he was smiling nonetheless, "You know I love you too much for that, dear."
"Dad, Mom, stop with your mushiness. You're gonna scare Kyoya away," Kirari complained, puffing out her cheeks.
Mizuki laughed and shook her head. "Sorry, Kirari. But thank you, Kyoya for being friends with my daughter. She's not exactly the best at making friends, so this means a lot to us. We hope to see you more often."
"Of course."
It had started as daily visits for tutoring, but soon enough it became his second home-a place of sanctuary where Kyoya could just relax and not worry about pleasing his father. Kirari became his family-or maybe something more.
|| A Few Days Later... ||
"Class Representative, Vice-representative, please come this way. Allow me to introduce you to our new student, Tamaki Suoh."
Kirari and Kyoya stared as the blond boy next to the teacher stood up and greeted them. "It's a pleasure to meet you both."
"This is class representative Kyoya Ootori and vice-representative Kirari Hoshiya." Kyoya's and Kirari's eyes shot wide open when Tamaki grabbed hold of Kirari's hands.
"You have the most beautiful straight hair that I've ever seen," Tamaki complimented, which for some reason cause Kyoya to feel annoyed. "I would assume that your heart is just as blindingly beautiful as that hair of yours."
Giving a glance at Kyoya, Kirari let out an uncomfortable laugh and gently pulled her hands away. "Aha, thank you, Suoh-san."
'It must be a cultural difference?' Kyoya thought as Tamaki walked over to him and held out his hand.
"Nice to meet you, Ootori."
"The pleasure is all mine," Kyoya said, plastering on a fake smile that he has spent all his life perfecting, "You know, if you'd like, I can take you on a tour of the school."
"That'd be great. Thank you so much."
|| Time Skip ||
Kyoya and Kirari were now walking through the school, giving Tamaki a tour. "Up ahead of us is the west school building," Kyoya pointed out, "All special classrooms are on the other side."
"Oh. Oh. I forgot. I was wondering, Ootori, Hoshiya-san, do you have a kotatsu at your house?" Tamaki asked.
Kyoya stopped in his tracks and gave the blond boy a confused look. "Eh?"
"Oh, surely you do. I think kotatsus are simply amazing!" Tamaki exclaimed, "I've always thought it was cool that the Japanese sit on the floor. I told myself I would sit under one once I got to Japan." A saddened look crossed Tamaki's face. "But at home, the decor is all western."
Kyoya and Kirari exchanged a look and sighed. 'Ah, so he's one of those.'
"Unfortunately, we don't have any kotatsu either," Kyoya said, "We do have Japanese decor though."
"AAHHHH!"
Kirari jumped at the sudden scream from Tamaki and stared as the boy sulked against the wall.
"What just happened," Kirari heard Kyoya mutter, "Did we just step on a land mine or something?"
"I can't believe it. You don't have a kotatsu?" Tamaki said, "I'm sorry, Ootori, Hoshiya-san."
"Huh?"
"It was rather insensitive of me to ask you that," Tamaki continued, "I guess your families aren't as close as they could be, huh?" He walked over to the two and grabbed their shoulders. "Look, it's okay, you don't have to hide it anymore. I'm well aware that the kotatsu is a symbol for a happy life in Japan.
"Correct me if I'm wrong, but here in Japan you playfully kick each other's feet under the kotatsu while building familial bonds of trust and watching Costume Grand Prix, right? And of course, you also eat plenty of mandarin oranges!"
Kirari stared in bewilderment as Tamaki lowered the mini television he had randomly pulled out of nowhere.
"I feel sorry for you two, you and your families are missing out," Tamaki said, getting depressed.
"Um, Suoh-san, I think you've got the wrong idea," Kirari said in a gentle voice, "It's not exactly the right season for kotatsus."
"And if it's that important to you, we can always put a kotatsu in our home for you to visit," Kyoya added.
Tamaki let out a gasp and dropped the television in his hand.
Kirari looked down at it aghast. "Uh-"
"Thank you, Ootori!" Tamaki shouted, launching himself at Kyoya, "Yay! You're such a good friend! You're my best friend! Hey, Ootori. I don't wanna be too forward or anything, but since we're pals, do you think it's okay for me to call you by your first name?" Without even waiting for his answers, Tamaki let go of Kyoya and began jumping for joy. "Bravo! Kyoya! My pal! Mon ami! Yahoo!"
"Um, Suoh-san, if you really want to use a kotatsu, rather than have Kyoya's family get one, we can simply just go to my house," Kirari offered, watching Tamaki's eyes grew bigger than humanly possible, "We have one stored in the basement and bring it up in the winter, but we can bring it back up now."
At this, Tamaki squealed and grabbed Kirari's hands, shaking them profoundly. "Hoshiya-san-no, can I call you by your first name, too? Kirari-chan, you're absolutely amazing! You must be a beautiful goddess sent down from the heavens to bless me! Thank you!"
Tamaki then pulled away and went back to jumping for joy. "Yahoo! Kirari! Mon ami! Kyoya! My pal! Bravo!"
As the blond boy did that, Kyoya and Kirari just exchanged exasperated looks. 'Just what did we get ourselves into?'
|| Time Skip ||
"Kirari-chan! Your house is so plain and quaint!"
Kirari gave him a weird look. "Um...thanks? I guess?"
Though Tamaki's exclamation was a bit rude, Kyoya had to admit Tamaki's reaction was quite understandable. He, himself, had the same reaction when he first saw her house. Unlike many other rich family households, who live in grand estates with huge palace-like mansions, the Hoshiya estate was more simplistic and contemporary.
When asked about the lack of a luxurious lifestyle, Kirari explained that it was because both of her parents had been raised in poverty. Being both orphans on the streets, they had found each other at quite a young age and chose to stick together for protection. They raised themselves and knew how precious even a single yen was, which led to saving and investing, and no yen was spent without careful thought.
Even now, the Hoshiya family save rather than spend. To them, there was no need to spend on something lavish and expensive when there was a cheaper and just-as-efficient—if not more efficient—product out there.
"I suppose compared to other students' houses, mine isn't as...grand...but I like it," Kirai said, "And I mean, it's still got some luxurious stuff, like a pool and hot tub, a gym, and an indoor movie theater, so what more could I ask for?"
"So you live in a neighborhood with commoners?" Tamaki asked.
"Well, I mean, I suppose. Everyone in this gated community is on the more high end of the social class, but I suppose we're one of the richer ones."
"Amazing!" the blond exclaimed, "Your house is quite amazing, Kirari-chan!"
"Thank you, Tamaki-san, but you haven't even seen the inside of my house yet." Kirari unlocked the door and held it open for Tamaki and Kyoya. "After you, monsieurs," she said, giving them a mock bow.
"Why thank you, mademoiselle," Tamaki replied, doing a fake curtsy. Kyoya shook his head with a sigh as the other two giggled before entering the house.
"Kyoya, can you show Tamaki to the family room?" Kirari asked, "I'm going to go down to the basement and grab the kotatsu."
"Of course."
Kirari beamed and gave Kyoya a quick hug. "Thanks, you're the best!"
Kyoya tried to hide his blush as he led the hyper blond to the Hoshiya family room. "This way, Tamaki. We'll wait in here while Kirari gets the kotatsu."
"Hooray!"
|| Time Skip ||
"So what do you think of Tamaki?"
It was late and the Hoshiya's chauffeur was taking Kyoya home. As per usual, Kirari insisted on accompanying Kyoya and at this point, Kyoya has learned to just accept it. Kirari laid sprawled across the seats, her head on Kyoya's lap, while the said boy was simply looking out the window, his hand unconsciously playing with the girl's hair.
"He's the son of the Headmaster," Kyoya responded.
Kirari rolled her eyes. "Yes, I know who he is, Kyoya," she said, lightly tapping Kyoya's leg, "but I'm asking you what you think of Tamaki."
"I think he's fine."
"Okay! And now that we got the bullshit out of the way, give me your honest opinion," Kirari said, giving Kyoya a look.
Kyoya let out a sigh of defeat, but there was a smile on his face. "He's an idiot."
"Ladies and gentlemen, we've got it!" Kirari exclaimed, sitting up excitedly, "The Shadow King finally reveals himself!"
Kyoya watched the girl, an amused look on his face, "'The Shadow King' you say?"
Kirari turned around to face him and winked, sticking her tongue out. "Why yes. With you and your ulterior motives, it is only right to dub thee Shadow King."
"I suppose I have no choice but to accept the nickname," Kyoya said, to which Kirari shook her head.
"Nope!" She then moved to lean against Kyoya, resting her head on his shoulder. "But you know, I like to think of you as my moon."
Kyoya looked at her with raised eyebrows. "Your moon?" he repeated.
Kirari nodded. "Yup! Kyoya means "night mirror" which I believe could mean a moon," she explained, "You're also like my light in the night-and I just like the moon, so...it works!"
"I see."
Kirari noticed the look on Kyoya's face and went to poke his cheek. "Hey! I've been your best friend for like five years, so don't think I don't know that you're thinking that I'm weird."
"But you are," Kyoya pointed out.
Kirari pouted and crossed her arms, "Hmph. Well, you love me anyway, don't you."
Kyoya chuckled, trying to ignore the rapid beating of his heart. "I suppose I do."
|| Time Skip ||
"Ah, the snow is so pretty," Kirari sighed as she stared out of the big window in her family room, "Hey, Kyoya-"
"No, we are not going to play outside," Kyoya answered, already knowing what Kirari was going to ask, "The last time we did that you got sick for a whole and I had to be the one to take care of you."
"Hey! I'm not that bad!" Kirari protested.
"You become more of a baby when you have a fever and you act drunk after taking medicine," Kyoya stated.
Kirari pouted. "It's not my fault you give me yucky drug medicine," she grumbled.
"Hey, Kyoya, Kirari, I just had the most brilliant idea!"
Kirari and Kyoya both looked away from each other to stare at the blond boy sitting at the kotatsu in front of them.
"We should start a club together!" Tamaki declared, "We could start our club activities as soon as we get into high school. And we can finally make use of our good looks with a high school host club!"
"Yeah, that will be a no from me, mister," Kirari denied.
"Sleep first and then dream," Kyoya said. He extended his leg out to push Tamaki down, causing the boy to laugh.
"I'm serious!" Tamaki said, "I already know who we should ask to join. We have to ask Haninozuka-senpai and Morinozuka-senpai from the high school and those second year twins."
"Right, you two can have your fun hosting, but I am going to stay out of that," Kirari said, "If you really want, I can be like your manager or something."
"That's perfect!"
"But you'll have to do the recruiting yourself," Kyoya added, "We'll join your club, but since it's your idea, you have to convince them to join."
"Alright!"
|| Time Skip ||
The sound of the classroom door opening was what made Kirari look up from the book she was reading. She and Kyoya were usually the only ones in the classroom which made it a perfect spot to hang out and relax during breaks. This time, Tamaki joined them, and Kirari watched as he sulked to his desk in front of Kyoya's.
"I thought you went to go see the twins today," Kirari said.
"I did but they ran away," Tamaki sighed.
"Can't blame them," Kyoya said, not even looking up from his book.
"Would you help me our there, Kyoya?" Tamaki said in an exasperated tone, "It's for the club!"
"We did say that you had to do the recruiting," Kyoya reminded him, "Besides we can still form the club without them, right?"
"No, we can't," Tamaki refused, "I want them to be a part of it."
Kyoya looked up to exchange a look with Kirari before letting out a sigh. "Let me guess. They're also what you refer to as 'our friends,' is that it?"
"Well, yeah." Tamaki slumped in his seat. "I just don't understand what they're thinking. If they want people to tell them apart, why don't they wear different hairstyles or something?"
"Maybe they don't want to be told apart," Kyoya said.
"But that's the whole point of the game, Kyoya," Tamaki pointed out.
"Well, then they do want to be told apart."
"Hold on. Are you even listening to me?" Tamaki questioned.
"Well, I hear you talking," Kyoya said, causing Kirari to muffle her giggles.
Tamaki groaned and laid his head on his desk. Seeing the poor blond struggle, Kirari decided to pity the boy and offer her help.
"You know what Tamaki? I can see that this really means a lot to you, so let me help."
"Really?! Thank you, Kirari!
|| Time Skip ||
"The one about to rip the letter is Hikaru!"
At Tamaki's declaration, the Hitachiin twins stopped what they were doing and stared at Tamaki in shock.
"But how did you know?" Hikaru asked.
"Am I right? Did I get it right?"
"Your reasoning?" the twins said.
"Intuition!" At Tamaki's response, the twins groaned.
"No way. I thought we already told you that you weren't allowed to just guess randomly," Hikaru said.
"Yeah, sorry about that. But it's still too early for me to tell," Tamaki apologized, "I mean, you are both totally identical. But it all depends on how you choose to look at it. Being identical is a talent in and of itself.
"So from now on, you should try to perfect the whole "two-in-one Hitachiin Brothers" act," Tamaki continued, "But you musn't forget that you're also independent beings with your own personalities. And while you're doing that, I'll keep bugging you until I can tell you apart."
"That doesn't make any sense!" Hikaru protested.
"It's contradictory!" Kaoru shouted.
"And what's wrong with that?" Tamaki retorted, "Haven't you two realized yet? You two are contradictory. It's what they call "individuality."
"What are you talking about?" Hikaru shouted as he and his brother marched up to Tamaki in unison, "If we play along with this silly 'Hitachiin Brothers' act like you want us to, you'll never tell us apart. We'll be even more identical!"
"You didn't think about that, did you?" Kaoru said in anger, "How can we show our 'individuality' if no one can tell us apart? It's always like this. We're the only ones who can tell the difference! No one will ever be able to win the 'which one is Hikaru?' game. And we've known that from the beginning!"
"Then why don't you tell me something?" Tamaki said calmly, "When someone guesses wrong, why do you look so sad?" At this, the twins' eyes went wide in realization.
"Even though I may not be able to, someday, somewhere, someone's going to come along who can tell the two of you apart," Tamaki told them, "But I know this much for sure. If you guys keep living in your own little world, chances are, you're never going to meet that person. So let me help you expand it."
"The one on the right is Hikaru."
The twins quickly turned around, in shock of the new voice and that they were correct. Behind them stood Kirari, a gentle smile on her face.
"Hikaru is much more aggressive than Kaoru," she stated, "And Kaoru has a much softer voice."
"How?" The twins couldn't even finish their sentence. They could only stare at the girl who had identified them correctly and with reasoning-a girl they never met.
"As similar as you guys are, you each have your little quirks," Kirari told them, "Those were just some small ones from basic observation, but I do hope to be able to learn more differences."
Tamaki walked over to stand next to Kirari and held his hand out towards the twins. "We should open the doors of the Host Club together!" he exclaimed, "Let's try to expand your world, together."
"Tamaki, we have to go," Kirari said, tugging on his sleeve.
"Our first meeting will be after opening ceremonies on the first day of school," Tamaki informed the twins as he and Kirari walked away, "It'll be in music room 3 in the high school."
|| Time Skip ||
"Sorry I'm late, guys." Kirari entered music room 3 and smiled at the 6 boys in the room. "I was called to the teachers' office for some news."
"Nee-san!" As soon as Kirari entered the room, the twin immediately ran to hide behind her. "His highness is being mean to us!"
"Me?!" Tamaki shrieked, "No! Don't listen to those devils, Kirari! It was them who were bullying me!"
"Lies!"
"Don't listen to him nee-san!"
Ever since that day Kirari correctly identified them, the twins became attached to her. They insisted on calling her nee-san and Kirari couldn't refuse because-if she had to be honest-she grew fond of them, too.
Kirari shook her head and sighed, "You guys. I was only late by ten minutes and you already caused such a ruckus? Did they cause you any trouble, Kyoya?"
"When don't they?" Kyoya retorted, "Unfortunately, this happens so often I've grown used to it."
"Hey, Kira-chan!" Kirari turned to look at her seniors who were calmly sharing a table with Kyoya.
"Yes, Honey-senpai?"
"What's the news? She did say that she had news, right Takashi?"
"Yes."
"Oh yes, right." A nervous look then appeared on Kirari's face. "Um, well, you see...I got an opportunity to study abroad in England...for a year...starting next month."
"Oh..."
"Wait, so you're leaving us?" Kaoru whined. He and Hikaru hugged Kirari's waist tightly."
"Um, I mean, I don't know," Kirari said, "'Cause I mean it's a great opportunity, but-"
"I think you should go," Kyoya interrupted.
"Huh?"
"What?"
"Eh?"
"Really?" Kirari stared at Kyoya in surprise, "Kyoya are you sure? 'Cause I'm the manager of this club, so I need to be in charge of the finance and the activities and-"
"-And I will handle them," Kyoya finished, "Kirari, this is a huge opportunity, and I know how you've always wanted to study in England. Don't worry about the club, we can care of ourselves, right?"
"That's absolutely correct!"
"Yep!"
"That's right!"
"Don't worry about us, Kira-chan!"
"Yeah."
Kirari gave the hosts a watery smile, touched by their encouragement. "You guys...okay, I'll go, but I'll be sure to video call you guys everyday!"
|| Time Skip ||
"Kirari!"
"We'll miss you Kira-chan!"
"Yeah."
"We take it back, nee-san! Don't go!"
"Alright, you two. Let her go," Kyoya ordered, making the twins let go of Kirari.
"Behave yourselves, boys," Kirari chided the twins before turning to the entire group, "I'll miss you all. I'll be back in a year, so don't forget about me."
"We would never!" Tamaki refused, aghast at even the thought of it."
"Haha, thanks, Tamaki."
"Kirari, I would like to talk to you before you go," Kyoya requested, "Alone." At that word, Kyoya glared at Tamaki and the twins, causing them to quickly go away, Honey and Mori following them.
"I'm glad you got me alone," Kirari said, "There's something I want to give you." She dug something out of her purse and gave Kyoya what seemed to be a jewelry box. "I know you're not really a jewelry person, but I was hoping you would wear it for me? You don't have to of course."
Kyoya opened the box to reveal a silver chain with a small crescent moon charm.
"'Cause you're my moon," Kirari explained, sticking her tongue out nervously, "I couldn't get a full moon because then it'd just look like a regular circle charm, but I mean a crescent moon is still a moon, you know?"
Kyoya smiled at the necklace and closed the box. "I love it and I will wear it every day." He pulled out a small box from his pocket. "Now, it's my turn."
Kirari took the box from him and slowly opened it. "Oh wow! Kyoya, it's beautiful." She pulled the jewelry out to examine the silver necklace with a small silver star.
"If I am your moon, then you are my star," Kyoya told her, causing her blush.
"I don't know what to say."
"Attention passengers, we are now boarding First-Class for the flight from Tokyo to London. I repeat First-Class for Tokyo to London."
"Um, I guess that's my cue to go," Kirari said, quickly putting the necklace back and placing it in her purse. "I'll see you later?"
"I'll miss you," Kyoya said.
Kirari paused for a bit. She then quickly gave Kyoya a quick kiss on the cheek before rushing the forming line. "I'll miss you, too!"
