HELLO! Random one shot that popped in my head because I just watched Sonic the Hedgehog and I figured these Halstead men at some point would've liked Sonic right?

Set during S3-S4 because I miss Linstead as well.

"No, no, no, NOOOOO! Damn it!" 7 year old Will Halstead cursed, hitting his controls and letting out a groan.

"Language William Halstead!" His mother shouted from the kitchen, "Do you want me to wash your mouth with soap?"

Will rolled his eyes, "No mom, sorrrrryyyy," Will stated, sarcastically elongating his apology. Damn wasn't even a swear word, but nope, being raised in a catholic household means not saying anything bad.

9 year old Jay smirked next to him, "Come on loser, my turn, let's see what level I can get too." Jay snatched the controls from his little brother's hands and selected replay on the screen.

The brothers had just received the latest brand-new video game in the market, Sonic the Hedgehog, for Christmas and have been playing it ever since. One trying to outdo the other and finish the quest by collecting all the emeralds, and in true brotherly fashion, they bet on who would finish it first.

"Jay, it's not fair, your hands are bigger for the controls, you always win these games. I'm never going to catch up to you!" Will whined, lips starting to quiver as his eyes filled with tears. "Please let me have another turn? Pleaseeeeee? I promise I'll give it back after. PROMISE!" He made a snatch for the controls but Jay, ever with the fast reflexes, moved his hands in time and the controller was just out of Will's little reach.

Jay laughed, "No way, Will. I already let you have a turn, it's my turn remember?"

Their mother wandered into the living room where the boys were sitting, "Jay Jay, give the controller to Will okay? He's younger and you do win quite a lot of things."

Jay groaned in defeat. Handing the controls to a grinning, triumphant Will, he walked to his mother and wrapped his arms around her stomach. "Why do I always have to give Will what he wants? It's not fair, just because his younger and smaller. Why couldn't I be smaller?"

His mother knelt down to Jay's height and ruffled his hair, "Because Jay, you are my Jay Jay, my first born, and I love you with all my heart. Sometimes you need to give the little ones a shot at doing something, okay?" She placed a hand over his heart, "And deep down, I know you are a good boy, and more importantly, a good older brother to Will, which means you are going to give him whatever he wants, and when you boys grow older, you will always have his back, because that's the kind of person you will be. Okay?"

Jay smiled sheepishly, and hugged his mother tighter, "Okay mom," he whispered against her apron. "I love you too."

Placing a kiss on his cheek, she turned him around facing the couch, "Now go back and play your game. You boys only have 10 minutes of game time before it's dinner."

Jay scuttled back to the couch in time to see Will fail the level again.

"Jay, here's the controls." Will passed it to him but looked when he made no move to take it. "Jay? Jay, jay…"

"Jay? Jay? JAY!"

38 year old Detective Jay Halstead jumped with a start, almost falling off the edge of the couch. His girlfriend, Detective Erin Lindsay looked worriedly at him.

"Babe? Are you ok? You haven't said a word since I showed you the game. Are you alright?"

Erin was referring to the new Sonic the Hedgehog game that was recently released. Erin herself is a closet video game nerd and one of her secret loves is Sonic. Well Sonic and Mario.

"Nothing babe, I loved Sonic as a kid, used to beat Will all the time," Jay gave her his patented smile.

"Well I'd assume you'd beat Will all the time. Your reflexes are fast and you are older by two years." Erin replied, giving Jay a shoulder bump.

She slid into the seat next to him and leaned closer, "Now, are you sure everything is okay?"

Erin knew her partner better than himself. She knew every smile and every line on his face, and so she knew when her partner was not feeling ok.

Just as he was about to answer, his phone rang. "Hey man, what's up?"

"Jay! Did you see the new recently released Sonic game? Want another round for me to beat your ass?" Will Halstead was on the other end, egging his brother on.

Jay laughed, "Bro the day you do that is the day they put me in the ground and I'm not around to beat your ass."

Will chuckled, "Yeah, yeah, okay. So your place or mine man?"

"Erin just bought the game Will, come to ours tonight for dinner?"

"Yeah sure, I'll see you after shift. Bye."

"Yep, laters man." Jay ended the call, and looked over at his girlfriend who was sitting on the couch with a raised eyebrow.

"So, Will and I have this tradition. Every time a new Sonic game gets released, one of us will get it and we have a few rounds, and we bet on who'll win. We've been doing it ever since I was 9 and the first Sonic game was released."

"You were 9! What would you have bet?"

Jay simply smirked, "You'll see later."

"Okaaaaay, I can't believe you got the first Sonic game though, that's is pretty lucky." Erin smiled, happy that she's getting some insight into her boyfriend's childhood, no matter how small.

"It was our Mom's Christmas gift to us. We had this old Sega genesis console that my dad had found on the sidewalk, and he made it work and our mom got us the game as a gift. It was awesome, and Will and I played it so often, long after we finished the quest and collected all the emeralds." Jay had this far off look in his eyes. "I remember the first time we quarreled over the game, and I went over to my mom because Will got the controls again and she gave me a heart to heart about being a good person and good older brother. Fat lot that did though, because I left for the army when I turned 18 and Will was off partying and neither of us were around when my mom was dying." His eyes turned misty and Erin grasped his hand in hers.

"Jay Halstead. You are a good man, a good person, and a good brother. It's not like you could ever have controlled Will. But all those events that transpired led you here right? You have been able to build your relationship with your brother, and you are an amazing detective in one of the best units in Chicago. From what I have heard from your mom, I think she would be so proud of you." Erin replied, "I wish I could've met her."

Jay chuckled and kissed the back of her hand, "She would've loved you. You know how to control me."

Erin mocked punched his shoulder, "HEY!"

Jay captured her lips in his with a light kiss, "In all seriousness, I love you. So I know she'll love you too."

Erin's eyes misted over and she leaned into Jay with passionate kiss. "I know I would've loved her as well. She raised a good man. Two good men actually." Erin moved out of Jay's grasp as he tried to clutch her legs. "Your brother is coming over, and we don't have any dinner so we need to go buy food, babe. Come on, I'd love to hear more about your mom."

Jay grinned and followed after her like a puppy, "Actually, did I tell you that one time…"
