Just for clarification, there will be a chapter about the explanation of this world. But it will not be a history lesson. Only how the world became like this with perpetual war. Each chapter will be at least 3000 words.
For the nations in this world, they are mostly inspired by nations from other works (It is cited at the end of the chapter). Except Arstotzka (Papers Please). Because glory to Arstotzka.
Note: I am a amateur writer so please don't murder me for bad quality. This story will loosely follow the cannon plot up until Pina enters Japan. After that I will no longer rely on the canon plot. I should probably say first that WAR CRIME WARNING.
Ameno Kenji's POV
The year is late 21st century. Nobody knows the exact date. But it is estimated to be around late 2070's. What started off as a century that is the most peaceful time period in history was turned upside down by war. Decades has past since war first broke out. There are five major power that dominate the world: United Kingdom, Atlantis, Russia, Arstotzka, and Japan. And all of them is at war. For how long? Nobody knows. But one thing is for certain: None will prevail.
The Empire of Japan, through series of wars against China, has taken Korea and Taiwan. And dragged them down from their position as one of the superpower. So Japan has once again became the sole superpower of Asia. Now in war with all the superpowers. There are no sides in this war. Each nation is fighting for their own interest. The war is fought in the uncivilized area, or Africa and South America.
After the Atlantian Civil War, or as the Atlantians call it, "the Revolution," Atlantis invaded and completely obliterated society in South America. There are no nations in that continent anymore. Only groups of gangs hunting down those who desire peace. And superpowers fighting to take control of the continent. Africa once again became a victim of war, as each nations raced for the valuable resources there. The fighting is especially fierce in South Africa, where 14 million men died there last year.
I am Ameno Kenji, a 25 year old man who had been recently drafted to the military after finally getting out of college. But I am kind of glad of it. Due to the ongoing war, the working society of Japan is experiencing a serious lack of manpower which keeps rising along with the work hours because of it. In short, the working society is entering a dark age. I actually have a older brother that wasn't drafted, working over at least 12 hours each day to live. And plus I only got drafted as a reserve... or that was suppose to be it. Last week, Ginza was attacked by a medieval fantasy army. And now the reserves are going to go through a gate where the invaders came from and capture the enemy capital. I look up towards the wall where the television is attached. It showed the current Emperor Hisahito's speech the day after the attack.
"I think all of us here is aware by now at the fact that we were under attack by a previously unknown force now known as Sadera. The casualties and damages inflicted yesterday, cannot be understated. Over a hundred-thousand civilian casualties are confirmed either missing or dead. The enemy came from a gate which opened up in middle of Ginza without reasons. The mechanics of that gate is still shrouded in mystery. Just what is beyond that gate? The answer is a civilization far inferior to ours. A world in the age of colonialism. A civilization which dare cross into ours. There be no negotiated peace for this war. For them to have so violently and cruelly massacred our civilians. We have confirmed over ten-thousand captured civilians forced to go across the gate. Their whereabouts are still unknown. It is to be our highest priority to take back our citizens and make those responsible for this attack pay their ultimate price. The hostility's manifest presence cannot be ignored. It is clear to us that we could make the same mistake we have made in the previous century.
Newspapers were being printed in mass, camera flashing, and mass media rushed to get the latest information. Propaganda posters were being stick up to walls all around Japan. Often portraying the enemy, now known as Saderans, as brutes that only wants blood and sex.
Fear now..! Your freedom is in danger!
Perhaps I am the only one that fails to completely trust the government of ours. Because I was always skeptical in school, where propagandas are placed in educations. Well, I was lucky enough to be in school. 85% of Japan's population is an uneducated hordes of fools. Japan has a population of 90 million. A few million away in war wouldn't cause such troubles in the working class, well, this is the reason why. No one knows where they came from. But the government says that they came from the failures of the previous government, which everybody believes in. The educated 14% of the population I feel is merely brain washed by the Japanese Parliament. But I always wondered who that remaining 1% of the population is. They never taught us that in school.
I watched as the clock struck 15. I wondered if I was the fool for not believing in the government like the others.
Ito Iroha's POV
Being to not go to college, I immediately entered the working society. It was so easy to get hired because of the manpower shortages. But I regret even entering society now. I work over 10 hours every day, sleep for 2 hours and repeat. That was 7 years ago, now I wonder what I am working for. I check the clock, rubbing my exhausted eyes.
22:77
I missed my house. Wondering when I last went back to that place. I remembered it clearly. 3 months and 5 days ago for a day. I work and sleep. That has been my adulthood.
"I should kill myself like my old senpais..." I mumbled. In addition to the lacking manpower, people who lost faith in continuing just committed suicide. Because of that, I have became the longest person to stay in my office. Thus, inexperienced newcomers ask me mountains of questions. "I wonder how it's like to be set free..." I sighed deeply, forcing the energy drink down my throat. I phone buzzed on the table, I slowly reach for my phone, seeing a government notice in my mail.
Draft Notice
Issued to: Ito Iroha
Issued by: Imperial Japanese Army
We tried contacting you through mail several times and had no response. You've been marked eligible and most come to the nearest branch for immediate departure for the Special Region. Please contact us at the following number and respond to this message immediately.
I mumbled these words slowly as I realized what they meant. "YES!" I yelled in excitement, scaring my kouhais.
I am free! No more working 10 hours a day! I can sleep!
I took a deep breath and looked at my phone again. "Wait, what's Special Region?" I asked myself.
"You don't know ma'am? Ginza attacked by some medieval army just last week!" one of my kouhais said. I gripped my hands in excitement.
That means I won't die!
I wondered how long it has been since I have been this excited. Maybe during high school? I'll just enjoy the vacation to a pre-industrial country with beautiful green nature...
"Kitamura... you were a awesome kouhai.." I patted my kouhai as I grabbed my bag and left for my house.
Sadera, capital of the Saderan Empire
"Excuse my rudeness, but what are we going to do about this crisis your majesty?! The expeditionary force was almost entirely annihilated! We were only able to get information about the enemy through one of the few survivors! Who speaks unbelievable things! If what they claim is true, we have no chance of victory!" Garcel spoke out.
"They must be traumatized, there is no way what they claim is true! Iron dragons? Iron elephants? Impossible!" a senator yelled out.
"Even if, they are capable of inflicting that much trauma to our men! They could have equal, if not worse military capabilities!" another one yelled. Soon after the room erupted in arguments. Emperor Molt sat there quiet. The screams of the senators didn't stop until Princess Pina slammed open the door.
"Father!" she cried out. "Is it true that the expeditionary force has been annihilated?!" she asked. "This is a loss of a sixth of the empire's total fighting strength! How do you intend to compensate for this unprecedented disaster?!"
"Pina, I share your concerns.. I always fear every night of foreign lords and the enemy rounding up our capital. But every time our empire was in a state next to destruction, the empire united stronger than ever before to fight through. Like the Great Arctic War 250 years ago."
"But it's been a week since the expeditionary force was destroyed! The enemy could counter attack and seize the gate any moment!" a senator cried out.
"Than fight! If we alone do not have sufficient amount of troops, than we can gather than from our vassal states!" the room erupted in argument once again. But the emperor raised his hand to silence them.
"We cannot stay petrified, we will fight. In order to combat these invaders from another world, send messengers to our vassals requesting reinforcements! We will muster the might of Godu Rino Gwaban and protect the hill!" the room erupted in applaud. While Garcel watched in horror.
"Your majesty... are you going the fill Alnus with blood?"
Ameno Kenji's POV: 19:15
I have been assigned as the leader of newly formed 2nd Recon. Responsible for investigating government, military tactics, magic, and air force of this world. I don't know what I did well to be assigned to this position but as long as I am in this position I am willing to do my best for it.
I walk in front of my new platoon. There are 30 members and two squads. The first commander is me and the second is Itami Youji, whom I've seen at the news for being a hero during the attack on Ginza. The platoon have two medics. The vehicles are 3 combat vehicles, 1 tank, 2 motorcycle, and 1 helicopter. Both Itami and my squad have 15 men.
I clear my throat, preparing to speak. "As you know, once we get to the other side, all common sense we have gained in this world may not apply. Such as a simple handshake. And in order to know these people, we must not show suspicion. So approach with maximum cautions." The wind blew hard on my face, I fixed my glasses which got pushed upwards. "Leaving with things we already know is no fun, so here are the latest news I just received. There will be 3 divisions crossing the gate, once we clear the gate 3 more divisions will be crossing the gate. That's at least 7200 men against hundreds of thousands of enemy. Every one of you are not allowed to die until you kill at least 10 Saderans. This is an order." with that I ended my speech. As Itami prepared to speak.
"Umm... I don't really have much to say. I am Itami Youji. Second Lieutenant, commander of Itami Squad. An additional news is that the police is also coming with us through the gate." he ended his speech. "The police? Are they lacking men?" I asked. "I guess so. Apparently its for dealing with prisoners." I scratched the back of my head, so it's for filling the gap between us and the Saderans. Since most of the soldiers are in the front lines of the war in Africa and South America.
As I head for the cafeteria, I am stopped by Ito Iroha. One of the medic in the platoon. She has a waist length straight black hair with a bang on her right side and blue eyes. "Um, have we met before?" she asked. Now that I think of it, I think I've seen her somewhere before. "I think I did, can't really remember though.." I answered. I kept wondering, where have I heard of that name before? Until my brain snapped, "Wasn't it the second year of middle school when you moved to my school?" I asked. "Dairoku Chuugaku?" I added. "Yes! When you moved away after the year ended!" I laughed. "What a coincidence. To think that I would meet you again here. The popular clumsy girl that I shared a class with for a year." we did share a seat for around a month. Where we exchanged answers for subjects we were bad at.
"Remember what we did when we sat next to each other?" she nodded, laughing. I take a seat in my usual seat in the cafeteria as Ito sits in front of me. "You already made a friend?" Itami, who just walked over, asked. "Well, it appears like I just reunited with someone I knew from the past." I said taking a piece of rice. "Can I sit here? I don't have friends except Kurota." he says, taking a seat anyways. "So what did you do in Ginza?" I ask. "It was all an accident. A convenient one for sure. I just said we should evacuate to the Imperial Palace and got promoted. But I think anyone in that situation would say the same thing." Itami mumbled.
"Well, enough about me, since when did you two know each other?" Itami asked. "When she moved to my school in the second year of middle school. Although I moved away after the year ended. Our relations were more than an acquaintance, but couldn't call it friendship either." that somehow made a disappointed face on Itami. "What, were you expecting us to be dating or something?" I asked. "What? Dating? Please commander, that thing is not my type at all." she said carelessly. "Don't call me a 'thing.'" I noted. "Get thingzoned." Itami commented.
Atlantis capital Housia: 19:84
The Atlantic Tower, it is at the top of this government building where General Secretary of Atlantis Mike Stewart resides. The building's size is equal to Buj Khalifa. It is made of hard grey concrete with barely any windows. It stands out due to it's darkness in this megalopolis filled with bright and shiny skyscrapers for the working population.
Deputy Premier George Bellshaw, second in command of Atlantis, walked up to the General Secretary's office. He has a short black hair with rounded glasses. He wears a white suit with a small flag of Atlantis (Blue star inside a white circle with blue background) wrapped around his left arm. "Long live Atlantis." he said. The same reply came back from the AI screen placed on the door.
"Please enter password." it said. Bellshaw typed in 'Union of unbreakable march of the god's children." the door opened, revealing Mike Stewart. If there was one thing that defined his appearance, it would be "Terrifyingly dark." He has a pitch black, well shaped mustache with a matching black suit. But what was truly terrifying about this man is his eyes. Pure black eyes that look like it is staring into your soul and is eating you up internally.
"Mr Secretary, I've got the information on the rebel leader that you requested for." Bellshaw formally handed over the paper reports, Stewart skimmed through the passage. "Very well, I'll take a look at it later. These traitors that defy our nation. You may go." Bellshaw bowed lightly before closing the door. The sheer pressure he got just by being in front of him gave away why he don't have any political opponents. He took a deep breath before leaving. Cannot show weakness. Since he is always, ALWAYS, being watched.
DISPATCH DAY
Ameno and Itami stood in front of their platoon, facing the Prime Minister. Ito stood next to the other medic, Ishikawa Akira. He has a brown hair with yellow eyes. Prime Minister Kondo Hideki walked up the stairs.
"Thanks to the efforts of the former Prime Minister Houjou and much support from multiple parties this deployment is finally authorized and ready to begin. You carry all the hopes and dreams of our people with you. Members of the Imperial Army, service with distinctions, we shall except nothing less of you." the general responsible for this campaign walked up to the stage.
"I am Lieutenant General Hazama several missions has scouted the regions last four weeks, so far, all of the members returned safely, but we still don't know what we are facing. Therefore I suggest you all get ready for the possibility being in a fire fight the moment you reach the other side. We're moving out shortly, stand by."
"Get the tires and light the fires people." the tanks crew started working. Soon the gate started to open.
"Move out!" the vehicle Itami and Ameno was in started moving, some members were obviously shaking. As the last Imperial Army vehicle entered the gate, he could see the police force entering.
"General, the spearhead has got to the other side." Yanagida said. "Worst case scenario, a fight as soon as we get to the other side. If that's the case we'll have to get rid of them with the force we currently have." Hazama responded.
"There's catgirls on other side right?" Kurata asked Itami. Itami responded with a beaming smile, "There's no way there isn't!"
"Enemy spotted!" men jumped out of their vehicle, getting to combat positions. "Confirming... 1, 2, 300 thousand!" Just the sheer size of their number horrified them. The enemy tents lit up, and sounds of angry monsters growling could be heard from afar. The enemy fired waves of arrows at the Imperial Army. Which failed to reach it's objective.
"Open fire!" gun fires exploded into life as hordes of bullets mowed down the enemy. Tanks fired towards the advancing monsters. Obliterating them and tearing apart their limbs and arms. The artillery shot towards the wyverns in sky, as combat drones slowly ascended into the sky. Shooting down wyverns. Still, waves of ballistas and arrows continued to rain on the Imperial Army. Some took cover behind rocks or vehicles. As medics rushed to treat those who were shot.
"Aim at the archers!" the order came, as every men and tanks aimed at long range weapons, soon ballistas and archers were massacred, the Imperial Marching Band started to play Battotai as the Saderans retreated, the Japanese chased them down, with tanks rolling over the dead bodies of wyverns. Soon the absolute superior fire power proved too much for the Saderans, as the entire army retreated through the hill. As the army shot them down, the police force chased them down, capturing any men left behind and medics treating the injured.
Itami could see the riot police crashing with a Saderan cavalry. Stopping their advance while handcuffing them. "Arrest them!" they yelled. Tasering them off their horse. By the time any remaining force were captured, the enemy army was gone.
Sadera, capital of the Saderan Empire
Many senators read the results of the battle in awe. 75% of the army of 300K was killed (For those who don't speak math, that's 225K).
"T-those cowards! Do they not know pride as a warrior?!" they shouted. While Molt watched in amusement. Now the vassal states are too weak to revolt. Well, that's the good news. The bad news was that the survivors has confirmed the tales of the survivors from the expeditionary force. Which means the enemy does have iron elephants and dragons.
"Father! The enemy has taken the Holy Hill! What are you going to do about this?!" Zorzal demanded an answer. "Calm down Zorzal, that was merely for eliminating the threat of our vassals revolting. They've lost hundreds of thousands while in contrast we lost ten thousand. And we learned what kinds of weapons the enemy possess." Molt said, quieting Zorzal. "Oh! I see father, you're a genius!" with that, he left. "What an idiot." Molt mumbled.
Paradizna, capital of Arstotzka: 23:25
"The gate is a frontier. Can you imagine what possibility is waiting on the other side? Untouched resources, economical superiority, unpolluted nature, the genetic information on fantastical creatures... I just really wish it was us that held that gate." Arstotzkan President Lindon Cavage stated.
"Japan is an allied nation against Russia, surely if we simply ask, they might give us some." his guard said. "That is not enough, Bob. We are in demand of enormous resources to combat Russia. And the gate is the perfect source. We would need a equal share of the gate if we wanna push the Russians to Moscow." Cavage said. "What are you planning to do?" Bob asked. "Well, if it simple, my friend: Send men. Japan's society is entering a dark age due to the lack of manpower. And our country has more than plenty. And many of them speak Japanese after studying in Tokyo University. So if we send them there, they would gladly share that precious resources with us." Cavage said. "I see, brilliant plan Mr President." Cavage laughed it off, entering the office of Japanese embassy.
Unknown, somewhere in Falmart
"What did you just say?!" a man in a suit yelled banging the table. "The otherworlders the Saderans attacked had technology far greater than ours. It is assumed that it is at least 100 years more advanced than ours." the man palmed his face. "Those damn barbarians.. that's why I told them to not attack another fucking world.." he sighed. "Well... what else do we got than investigate them. The people of Vincon will have to know about this. To take the highest precaution before traveling to Sadera. Inform the public." the man ordered. "Yes, Mr President."
