Title: MosaicTale: The Fractured Soul

Disclaimers: I do not own undertale, Error!Sans, Ink, or any other Aus of Undertale. I only own My Mosaic version of everyone and this plot.

Summary: When you look at a Stained Glass window or a Mosaic, what do you see? Do you see only mismatched pieces and parts? Do you see a mess? Or do you see the story they tell? This story follows one such Mosaic...let's call her...Alyssa.

Notes: I've been thinking about writing this for some time now. I'm no good at drawing comics. If anyone wants to help me with that, I'd be forever grateful.

? POV

"Long ago, Monsters and Humans lived in peace and harmony. The harmony was so well pieced together, that some monsters and humans lived together and had families. Sure, there were some that didn't like the two races mixing, but they were a minority. No one expected them to be a problem...how wrong we were back then. Now, the monster prince, Asreil, was a very gentle being. He was loved by many, humans and monsters alike, much like the human princess, Chara. Some would say that it was fate, others would say it was by accident that the two met one beautiful spring afternoon. Once they had met, the young couple was near inseperatable. Their parents, seeing their love for each other as a good sign of things to come, allowed the pairing. How quickly time would change the path of fate."

"What happened, Big Brother?" I ask sitting in his lap as he works on his latest mosaic. Big Brother Sans was one of the best artistians in the whole Underground. His hands worked magic with stone, glass, and crystal alike, creating works so beauitful that they captivated those that stared upon them. Big Brother stops working a moment. "Are you sure that you want to hear this, kiddo? It's not exactly a good story" He asks. I understand his concern. I am only five, after all. "Yeah, it's our history. I want to know" I say. "Welp, I did warn you, Alyssa. Anyways, for some time, everything looked to be improving for the better. The kings of both races were planning for a union of the rule of the two races when their children finally married. Prince Asreil would rule over the monsters, and Princess Chara, as his wife, would rule the humans. Many saw this as a good thing, but not everyone liked the idea." Big Brother says as he goes back to work.

"The mino-minor..." I try to say, but it's too hard of a word for me right now. "The minority, yeah. They saw such a union as an abomination. Eventually, they made their views loud and clear with the deaths of Prince Asreil and Princess Chara. This ended the peace that had been in place for so long. Despite all efforts to avoid it, war broke out. The humans blamed the death of their beloved Princess Chara on the monsters. While the monsters blamed the death of their gentle Prince Asreil on the humans." Big Brother says. "Why? That's stupid!" I say and my brother nods. "Unfortunetly, when emotions run hot, no one wishes to be rational, my child." Our father, Gaster, the Royal Scientist, says coming in. "Humans and monsters alike can't think clearly when their is so much pain and anger. When the war ended, the monsters were driven under mount ebott. The humans that had monster lovers, refused to remain with their own kind, and were sealed in along with their monster families." Big Brother says."What happened to them? There's no humans in the underground now" I say as father gently picks me up. "Humans do not live as long as monsters, Alyssa. The last of our human companions died of old age long ago." Father says and I nod and yawn. "That's enough history for today. You need to be resting." Father says and I nod, laying my head on his shoulder.

Gaster's POV

I take Alyssa to her room in the lab. We used to live in Snowdin, but my research and Alyssa's health kept dragging us to the lab. I gently put her into her bed. Her soul...although incomplete, is stable for now. I am grateful for that. It was a course of many years, not only for myself, but sans to get her this far. What we haven't told Alyssa yet is that her soul is a mosaic of the souls of our human companions, each one giving their soul to aid us upon their deaths. If only I could find that final piece to finish what we started, but, alas, none of the remaining shards fit into the void still within Alyssa's soul. Despite the original souls being extremely delicate, the shards were extremely durable and near impossible to shape. Seven souls...seven different traits, pieced together to create a beauitful mosaic, only to be left uncomplete.

I cover Alyssa with a blanket and return to my eldest son, Sans. "Is she asleep?" He asks not looking up from his work. "Yes, she was asleep before I even got her to bed." I say looking at the piece he was working on. It was a comission piece to be exchanged across the barrier for food and cloth from the humans. "Her soul will eventually break apart...you know that, right?" Sans says. I sit down with a sigh. "I know. Every attempt before her broke apart. I..." I start to say. "You got attached to her." Sans says. I nod and he looks at me, his purple eyelights steady on me. "It will only make it harder on you when she does break." He says. "I know...but she's lasted this long. Far longer than the others." I say. "That may be, but it doesn't change the fact she's on borrowed time." Sans says. "I'm home" We hear as Papyrus comes in. He's covered in glass dust again, the different colors painting him a variety of colors, as usual.

"Hey Pap, rough day?" Sans asks. Papyrus looks between Sans and I. "You two were fighting about Alyssa again, weren't you?" He asks putting his toolkit in the closet. "We discussed Alyssa, yes. We never argue" I say making Sans snort. "It seemed like an arguement to me, pop" Sans says. "I don't see why you two have to focus on the bad in this. Alyssa is alive, and forever as long as she is, I will love her. Just as I did for the others. Pretending that she is just some unfinished project isn't going to change anything and hurt Alyssa's mental stability in the process." Papyrus says heading upstairs. I watch him go into the bathroom for a shower. "I guess Paps is right...it may be because of our...attachment...that Alyssa has survived this long. However, I do thing she will eventually know that she isn't a monster. Her body followed the fragments of her soul, making her appear human." Sans says. "I will deal with that when the time comes. For now, let her remain innocent" I say and Sans nods.

Four Years Later

Alyssa's POV

"I can't do it..." I say looking down. "You can't because you keep giving up. Don't quit, Alyssa" Father says. I look at the various colored crystals before me and the empty frame before me. I've tried several times to make a mosaic like Sans...and I kept failing and dumping the frame out in my irritation. "I just keep making a mess..." I say. "So? Life is a mess, kiddo. Do you really think I was always good at mosaic work?" Big Brother Sans asks coming over. "yeah..." I say and look at him. He chuckles. "I wasn't. It took time. I had to learn patience and learn perseverance. Two things you are having trouble grasping" He says sitting beside me. "Patience...Perseverance?" I ask. "Yup. Patience means to accept things take time. Perseverance means to stick with something..to adapt to things around you to achieve your goals." Sans says. Father smiles and goes to make lunch. "Now, try again. This time, try to be patient." Sans says and I nod. Picking up a crystal, I turn it over in my hand, thinking. Then, the room seems to fade away.

Flashback Start

I sigh and go to the table. Gaster was passed out again. He's been working at repairing that human soul for months now. I reach my hand...my human hand out and gently shake Gaster. "Gaster, come on, you need to get to bed." I say trying to be firm with him. He wakes up and looks at me. "Oh...Kate...I...I was just resting my eyes. I'll go to bed in a moment." Gaster says trying to wave me off. I grab his hand. "No, you will go to bed now, Gaster. I've been as Patient with you, but even my Patience has it's limits." I say. He sighs and gets up. "Worlds above that you ever run out of Patience, Kate." He says and I follow him out to make sure he doesn't try to sneak back into his work room. I look the door behind me and I start to cough. Gaster looks at me concerened. "Kate, that doesn't sound good. you should get Alphys to look at you." He says. I wave him off. "It's likely just a cold. I will be fine, Gaster. You know how the damp underground is for us humans." I say and he nods.

Flashback End

"Alyssa, Alyssa? Alyssa!" I hear father call out as my vision clears again. "Daddy?" I say and shake my head. He hugs me tight. "Worlds Above, Alyssa, I was so worried we lost you" He says holding me close. "Daddy...who's Kate?" I ask and he freezes. "Well...shit" Sans says. "Where did you hear that name, Alyssa?" Father asks looking at me. I blink at him. "Pops...her eyes...they were green before" Sans says. "My eyes? What about my eyes?" I ask confused. "They're bluish purple now" Father says a little surprised. I smile a little. "Monster eyes change color all the time, right?" I ask. Father sighs. "I had hoped you would be a bit older before we had this discussion, Alyssa." Father says setting me on the couch. He and Sans sit beside me. "Before we get into this, Where did you hear the name, Kate?" Father asks.

"When...when I blacked out...I saw something. I think it was a memory...I was Kate. She came to get you out of your office. You had fallen asleep working at repairing a green soul. She said that she had been patient with you, but.." I say. "Even her patience has its limits...I remember that day...It was the last time I saw Kate alive." Father says sadly. "What happened to her, Daddy? Was she sick?" I ask and he nods looking away. "Kate had developed pneumonia from the damp living conditions at the time. It hit her so fast, that we hardly had time to understand what was happening to her." Sans says sadly. "Kate...at the end, gave her soul to us to try and help break the barrier. She was a light blue soul...Patience was her soul trait" Father says. "But why did I see this? I'm not her" I ask confused.

My father sighs and looks at me. "No, but you carry shards of her soul within you, Alyssa. It stands to reason that you can access the memories and knowledge within them." Father says gently touching my face. He then takes out my soul. My eyes widen seeing it for the first time. Seven different colors...seven different souls...shattered and reformed into a single soul...almost whole except for one empty space. "Daddy...what am I?" I ask and my soul goes back into my body as he hugs me close. "You are my creation, my precious daughter, Alyssa. Never think otherwise" He says. "So, Kiddo, want to try that mosaic again?" Sans asks and I nod. He smiles and we go back to the work table. "Remember, take your time. The best work is never rushed" Sans says as father watches us work.

One Year Later

A Mosaic of a beautiful flower with rainbow petals and gold binding is being prepared to go across the barrier. "You did a great job, Kiddo. I'm proud of ya" Big Brother Sans says and gives me a side hug as the cart with it and several other goods is sent through the barrier to the humans on the other side. They start to unload the cart so they can send food and cloth back in it. I watch as one of them picks up my first piece. I really hope they like it. It took so long and my hands still hurt from handling the crystal and stone fragments. "Sire, take a look at this one. Never seen one like it" The worker says. The human king comes over and I tremble a little scared. He gently takes it from the worker and softly runs his hand across it. "...A flower?" He asks. "...Yes my lord. You can tell?" The worker asks. "The human king was blinded in an accident some time back, Alyssa" Sans says helping me understand.

"The different textures...they paint the picture as if I...as if I could still see it...It is incredible." The human king says trying not to cry. "Big Brother...did I do something wrong? Why is he crying?" I ask and the human king looks my way. "You are responsible for this piece, young one?" He asks. "Yes...yes sir" I say. He smiles softly at me. "You have done nothing wrong, young one. It is a very beautiful piece. So inventive to not only paint the picture with color, but feeling as well. I haven't been able to see such a beautiful flower in some time. What is your name?" He asks. I smile feeling better knowing now that I'm not in trouble. "This is my little sister, Alyssa, your highness. The piece you hold is her first one. Took her a year to make, but I think she has talent for it" Sans says. He nods and has a worker take it away. "I would expect no less from one from your family, Sans. You are a great worker of mosaics, Papyrus in the art of stained glass, and Gaster in crystal. It stands to reason that young Alyssa would do well. I will be sending over something extra...for young Alyssa. Please see that she receives it." He says and leaves.

Later, Sans comes in with a small package. I had went home after the human king had left and told father about what happened. Father had been so happy and whirled me around, making me laugh. "Hey, I'm home" Sans says with a smile. "Big Brother!" I squeal happily and hug him. He laughs. "Hey kiddo, here's what he sent over. Let's see what it is" He says handing me the package. I sit on the couch and start to open it. Inside was a beautiful gold locket with silver engraving. With all the power to move a world, to make a blind man see. An angel's touch, and a child's heart. Was written on the back. I smile and show it to father. He takes it and reads the back. "Very fitting given what happened." He says and puts it on me. I smile big.
