It was a normal day for Rose Weasley in most respects.
She had woken up to the loud purrs of Pluto, who refused to move from his position nuzzled into her shoulder. After 10 minutes of struggle and several injuries, Rose got to brush her teeth and take a warm shower.
When she walked into the kitchen for breakfast, her mother was sitting at the counter, coffee and Daily Prophet in hand.
"Morning, Mum" said Rose nonchalantly.
"Good morning to you too Rose."
Hermione Granger-Weasley looked up at her, and held her stare. Rose felt a lurch in her stomach and looked away, heading across the room towards the fridge.
She wondered if her own brown-eyed gaze (much like her mother's), made people feel this scrutinized; as if a cozy blanket had been taken off of them forcefully, leaving them out in the open.
Could Mum know?
No, no. she reassured herself, she was just being paranoid. There was no way that her Mother could know. It was completely and utterly impossible; illogical.
"Rose?" Rose's Mum called, sounding concerned.
Rose snapped back to reality, realizing that she had been looking into the fridge for far too long.
"Sorry!"
She grabbed a carton of eggs, closed the refrigerator door, and told herself that it was all okay. Because it was. It was just a normal December day. A Saturday in fact. Saturdays usually went well for Rose. It was almost Christmas! There was nothing to be worried about. Rose's shoulders relaxed.
After breakfast, Rose went back to her room. To read of course. That was a normal thing for Rose to do, seeing as she loved to read. Maybe she'd do some schoolwork too. Professor Longbottom had assigned a lengthy paper on the proper care of the Snargaluff that she needed to get started on.
Locking the door behind her, Rose took a deep breath. Her heart pounded as she walked towards her bookshelf. She reached for Flesh-Eating Trees of the World, pausing to watch as her hand shook. Carefully, she picked up the book. In that moment, she knew that what lay inside it was not just fascinating information on the correct way to juice a Snargaluff Pod but the answer to the scariest question she had ever asked.
No-No-No. Today was normal! Everything was FINE.
Her breath became frantic, and she felt her carefully repressed emotions bubbling up to the surface.
Rose inhaled, and with the subsequent exhale her panic seemed to disappear. She opened the book. Tucked into the inside cover was a purple envelope. Opening it, Rose read the small set of instructions enclosed. It was like a homework assignment. Just follow the directions and she would be fine.
Ripping off what appeared to be an enclosed piece of chocolate, Rose shoved it into her mouth. Her hands were still quivering.
Almost immediately, a golden glow enveloped her fingertips, spreading to her arms, face, chest, and abdomen.
The panic was back. Desperately, Rose looked back at the instruction sheet:
Golden aura: Pregnant
No visible aura: Not pregnant
Shit. Today was not normal.
