The usual time to wake up was six for Sunrise Exercise, so Kai was confused when his sister shook him awake, saying she'd been training with Zane and Lloyd for almost half an hour. A quick glance at the Fire Ninja's clock showed the minute hand pointing straight up with the hour hand pointing straight down.
"No," Kai protested. "It's six right now."
Nya glanced at his clock and her brow furrowed in confusion. "All the rest of our clocks say it's six-thirty."
"APRIL FOOLS!"
The shout came from the courtyard and the siblings rushed out to find Jay and Cole, still in their sleepwear staring at Lloyd as he laughed. Zane was facepalming in the background.
"Oh man, you guys- you guys are too easy," Lloyd chortled. "Sure, I lost, like, two hours of sleep, but it was so worth it to see those looks!"
Jay groaned and looked over at Zane. "Tell me it isn't that day."
"I am afraid so, Jay," Zane sighed. "It is April first. Infamously known as April Fools Day."
"I wonder what other horrors await us today," Cole thought aloud, shoulders slumping.
"April first." The voice of their sensei made the ninja jump. "A day of diligence. A day to be light on your feet. Already, the pranks have begun: time has been set back thirty minutes for some of you. Be wary, for today, even the closest of friends become rivals."
"Now I'm scared," Jay half-laughed.
They figure they should have seen it coming. But their diligence was not good on the one day it needed to be. The unusual looks on the nindroids' faces should have alerted them. But no one noticed as they took huge bites of their pancakes.
It was silent for all of two seconds before everyone reached for their glasses of water.
"JALAPENOS!" Jay screeched when he downed his entire glass. "They laced these pancakes with jalapenos!"
"April Fools," the droids said in unison before celebrating a successful prank with a fistbump.
"Fool me once, shame on you," Kai growled. "Fool me twice, shame on me."
"And the day hasn't even started yet," Nya added, an almost maniacal laugh in her voice.
Over the course of the day, the ninjas' diligence rose, but so did the pranks.
A bucket of water over everyones' door accompanied by a cry of, "April Fools!" from Nya.
Cole chased a hysterically laughing Jay around the courtyard when the Blue Ninja "accidentally" took the power strip from the game room.
Someone took a pink marker to pictures of Zane. Fortunately, Kai had the original photos untouched and returned them to their proper place with a shout of, "April Fools!"
Lloyd rummaged through the recycling until he found what he was looking for, and replaced Kai's carefully-selected hair care products with bottles filled with water. Kai was understandably unhappy when he found out.
But no one, no one was as good as Wu. Nya slipped on a soap bar. Kai found himself unable to use his powers until he found a small vengestone coin in his pocket. Jay's shoelaces found themselves magically tied together. Zane got sprayed by the bathroom sink. Lloyd found devil horns taped to pictures of his younger self. Cole got tricked by an innocent cupcake filled with wasabi. Pixal found her tools gone, replaced with various teas.
It was nearing the end of the day when the ninja struck back.
Wu found a small package where his favorite tea- green- should've been, wrapped in bright, glittery wrapping paper that made a mess of his hands. Ripping the paper off, he found a box. In the box, there was his green tea. Sealed with at least thirty zip ties.
Wu couldn't help but laugh to himself as a chorus of "April Fools!" sounded behind him. He turned to find his ninja and samurai, grinning like maniacs.
"So my students must have the last laugh," Wu chuckled. "Very well. April Fools Day is nearly over. Can one of you help me open this?"
