Notes: Alright, I'm back with a new story, this one was also co-created with Ayaka_Jaegar. Before anyone comes for me, this is loosely based off of the changeling myths and the fae in general. Some of it comes from the mythology, the rest is altered for story purposes. So sit back and enjoy this one. It will be quite a ride.
Chapter 1- The Switch
The sun was blistering hot and like many other hot summer days, Izuku and Katsuki were out playing in the backyards of their small town. The two were playing kickball, or what Bakugou called kickball. The game mostly consisted of Bakugou kicking the ball and forcing Izuku to go get it. After a few minutes of running after the ball Izuku began complaining to Bakugou. He wanted a turn to kick the ball too.
"Kacchan! Come on I want a turn too."
The angry blonde child doesn't respond to Izuku, instead rolling the ball between his outstretched hands. After listening to Izuku complain Bakugou finally lets Izuku hold onto the ball for more than a moment. It sits between his feet on the grass. His bright red shoes, caked in mud, juggle the red rubber ball. Izuku seems to contemplate what he wants to do.
"Just do something, stupid nerd!"
Only after Bakugou inevitably screams for him to do something does he move. Izuku punts the ball with a mighty kick, seemingly using all of his strength. The ball bounces a few yards in front of the boys before rolling dangerously close to the edge of the woods.
"Good going Deku. Now what the fucking hell are we supposed to do?"
Bakugou angrily yells at Izuku, swearing like no seven year old should. When he reached Izuku he grabbed him by the shirt and pulled him towards the woods.
"You lost it, you go fucking get it," Bakugou menacingly said throwing Izuku down just a few yards away from the woods.
Izuku wasn't sure what to do. He didn't really like the woods, knowing all the stories his mother had told him over the years. He definitely did not want to go near them. Just as Bakugou opened his mouth again to tell Izuku to move, Bakugou's mother came running out of the house towards them.
"OI! Brats! What the hell do you think you're doing? How many fucking times do I have to tell you that the damn woods are dangerous."
The ever hot-tempered Mitsuki Bakugou stalks over to where the two boys are standing in the grass.
"We aren't doing anything you damn old hag! Izuku lost our ball in the woods and he was gonna go get it back," Bakugou tells her angrily.
Izuku, meanwhile, just looks relieved that he wouldn't have to go into the woods.
Mitsuki rolls her eyes, sighing dramatically. "Ok brat. I will go get the ball, but then you two are gonna listen to me for once."
Mitsuki quickly moves to retrieve the wandering ball from the very edge of the line of trees.
Bakugou agrees to Mitsuki's terms with a huff and Izuku just nods his head. They wait a moment for Mitsuki to come back and when she does they all move into the house at the insistence of one very annoyed Mitsuki. She points to the couch and wordlessly orders the two to sit.
"Alright brats, I have a story to tell you." She sits down on the couch beside Katsuki, ruffling his hair slightly. "You know us parents have a very good reason to want to keep you kids out of the woods. Katsuki, I know I haven't told you this story yet." She turns to Izuku with a critical eye. "Izuku have you ever heard of a changeling?"
Izuku hesitated for a moment before nodding his head. He had heard his mother and the old people around town talking about them. Bakugou always said that they were dumb stories though.
"Yes, I've heard of them but, aren't they just stories?" He asks timidly.
"Look kid, in this town those stories aren't just stories." She seems to think for a moment before she decides what to say. "The fae are very real. A changeling is a fae that has swapped places with a human, pretending to be them. Like the stories say, the fae love to steal children away. They take them off to the realm of the fae and the human never returns."
Katsuki scoffs at his mother, smirk plastered on his face. "Even if that bullshit were true, who's to say that we would be dumb enough to get ourselves taken?"
Mitsuki scowls at her son. "Watch the language brat! The fae have ways of getting you to go places you really shouldn't be."
Izuku had been sitting, quietly listening. "Miss Mitsuki, how would you know if someone got replaced with a changeling?"
Mitsuki grins, turning to ruffle Izuku's wild green curls. "Hear that brat? At least Izuku is listening. You can tell if someone is a changeling mainly by a change in their personality. A changeling won't act like their human version would."
Katsuki seems to be mostly ignoring Mitsuki, but Izuku is soaking in every bit of information. During the rest of that day Izuku asked Mitsuki every question he could think of regarding the fae, till he was inevitably called home by his mother.
Fifteen Years Later
A loud banging erupts, quickly thrusting Izuku back into the waking world. He sits up in bed, almost falling due to the tangle of blankets.
"Get the fuck up Deku! You forgot to set your damn alarm again!"
Izuku groans, dropping his head back against the pillow. "Ok, I'm up Kacchan. Thank you."
Bakugou scoffs from outside the door. "Pssht, whatever nerd. I'm leaving."
Izuku can hear the stomping footsteps that signal Bakugou leaving their shared apartment.
Midoriya detangles himself from his bed sheets, moving quickly to dress for class. He rushes to grab his bag and some coffee before practically running out the door. Izuku checks his phone as he speeds down the sidewalk towards his university. He has one message from Todoroki inquiring as to where he is, the other a message from Bakugou reminding him that he will meet him after tutoring Kirishima.
Izuku finishes the short walk to campus, heading straight for language and arts building. The hallways are empty as he enters, most of the classes having already begun. He gently opens the door to his mythology classroom, wincing as it looses an ungodly screech. The entire class turns in unison to see who had entered. Izuku ducks his head as Mr. Aizawa gives him a dirty look. He silently slinks his way over to his seat in the corner, behind a familiar head of red and white hair.
The class goes back to focusing on the movie that is currently playing. Todoroki leans back to whisper. " You forgot your alarm again didn't you."
Izuku sighs and nods, not even bothering to deny the statement. He takes out his notebook and tries to take some notes on the movie they are watching.
The class comes to a close and Izuku walks out with Todoroki at his side. Shouto frowns and says to Izuku, "You know Bakugou could be a decent person and actually wake you up in a timely manner to get to class. He most certainly realizes when you have overslept."
Izuku sighs. "Yeah, but I think Kacchan just enjoys my scrambling. Plus it's my fault for not setting my alarm anyway." Thankfully, for Izuku, Todoroki drops the subject as they part ways for their separate classes. Midoriya, being a dual english and education major has several more classes to finish before being finished for the day.
After his final class Izuku makes his way to the library to meet up with Katsuki and Kirishima. He enters the area of reserved study rooms and walks down the hall till he hears the telltale screaming of Bakugou inside. Izuku pokes his head in the door to see Katsuki periodically smacking Kirishima with a rolled up notebook. Each hit is paired with an insult.
"Come on shitty hair! You know that's fucking wrong." Wack. "I just showed you how to solve that one!" Wack. "No you moron, you had it set up right the first time!" Wack, wack.
Izuku shuffles into the room clearing his throat. "Umm Kacchan, I think it's about time for you to stop your tutoring session."
Kirishima gives a heavy sigh of relief. "Saved by the Midoriya. Thanks man, Bakubro was being extra tough on me today."
The exercise science major begins quickly packing up his things, ready to abscond. Bakugou huffs. "Deku won't be here to save you if you fail your classes because you can't pay attention."
Kiri nods. "I know dude. I think you beat it into me enough for today."
With that Kirishima leaves the two of them standing in the study room. Bakugou gathers his things and motions for Izuku to follow as he exits. The two of them leave UA and begin their short walk home. Neither one of them notice the figure looming just past the tree line as they walk along the path near the forest. The figure follows, sticking to the shadows.
They walk along the dirt path and Bakugou kicks a stone along as they go. Izuku speaks up after a long bout of silence. "You know you could be nicer to Eijirou. He is your friend after all."
Katsuki huffs. "Who the fuck said that. All of you are just damn extras."
Izuku rolls his eyes at Katsuki's words. "You know having friends isn't a bad thing Kacchan."
Bakugou goes to say something more, but there is a snap of twigs from within the undergrowth of the forest line. Katsuki immediately snaps his head towards the sound. "Who the fuck is there." He begins walking closer to the forest and Izuku panics.
"Kacchan wait! You can't go in there! You know it's dangerous!."
Bakugou smirks. "What's wrong Deku? Afraid of the stupid faries?"
He takes one look back at Midoriya before bolting straight into the forest. Katsuki can hear Izuku's panicked shrieking from a distance. He runs into the lush greenery of the town's forest. As he looks around he finds himself unimpressed. After all the years of being told stories of the dangers of these woods they looks rather boring. He looks around to see if he can spot what might have caused the noise earlier. He calls out, "Hey fucker! I know you can hear me. Why don't you come out!"
When he hears nothing he continues walking further into the woods. He nears a strange patch of greenery. It is a ring of mushrooms, in a perfect circle. In the center there is a divot in the ground where crystal clear water has pooled. He walks around the ring, observing its strangeness. As he bends forward to glare into the pristine pool of water there is a sharp push at his back. He almost tumbles forward into the water, but spins at the last moment to face his attacker.
Katsuki is met with the image of himself, but wrong. He is taller, with a strange iridescence to his skin. He doesn't get the chance to look longer as the fist of his double is slamming into the side of his jaw. The hit has enough momentum for him to tumble backwards, straight into the waiting water below. Katsuki waits for the impact of the solid ground as he falls, but instead is met with a horrible weightless feeling. His stomach drops as he realize he is still falling. He fell through the pool.
Izuku is frantically calling for Katsuki at the edge of the woods, along with a good number of the townsfolk and Bakugou's parents. Midoriya squints as he sees an outline of a figure exiting the trees. He sees a familiar puff of blonde hair and bolts forward. "Kacchan! Are you alright! Where have you been! We've been looking for you for over an hour now!"
Zero is about to reassure Midoriya before remembering his counterpart would not be so nice. He know he must blend in. He places a sneer on his face and growls out, "Just lost track of time Deku. Got tired of you not being able to find me. Why the hell is everyone out here freaking out?"
Izuku looks over Bakugou with curious eyes. He notes that something seems off, but doesn't push it further as everyone comes over to make sure Katsuki is ok. He relaxes as Mitsuki comes over and puts Katsuki in a headlock. The firey blonde woman is still able to scold her grown son even if he is more than a head taller than her. She shrieks at him. " What the hell do you think you were doing in there brat!"
The fae does his best to move any suspicion away from himself as the rest of the people searching disperse back to their homes. After Mitsuki gets a full scolding in Zero finally manages to drag Izuku away back towards their apartment.
Bakugou finds himself trapped in the endless feeling of falling, until suddenly he isn't. Katsuki lands flat on his back against the hard ground. He looks around to see himself in the same forest he was just in, but different. Everything seemed more green, and lively. His gaze snaps back to a figure walking towards him. He winces as he sits up, facing the person. He groans as he recognizes the figure. "What the hell are you doing here half n half?"
Todoroki looms above Bakugou as he scrambles to his feet. "Just follow me."
Bakugou notes that Todoroki doesn't look right just like his double had looked, but doesn't have time to note why because the other man turns away and begins walking. Katsuki scowls. " What the hell do you mean follow me? What kind of cryptic ass bullshit is that! I want some goddamn answers here. What the hell just happened with that tricky falling shit?!"
Todoroki rolls his eyes before continuing away from the forest and into the town. Katsuki grumbles as he follows the man. The path is almost the same as the one leading to his town, except everything here seems less modern. There is no sign of the technology of his world.
Todoroki stops at the first house the come across, on the very edge of the town. The next house is a far distance up the road. Todoroki gives three sharp knocks on the door. The door opens almost immediately. Katsuki's jaw about hits the ground when he sees who opens the door. It is Kirishima, but wrong, like everything in this world. For one this Kirishima was much taller, having almost a head of height on Katsuki. His skin, and Todoroki's both shimmer with an ethereal iridescence. The next glaring difference being that the man didn't have his hair spiked up in his ridiculous fashion, instead his long red locks are intricately braided and loose around his shoulders.
Todoroki motions to Bakugou with a glower. "Not my problem, your turn now." With that statement he turns away, walking towards the rest of town. Bakugou snaps his gaze back to the not Kirishima and stalks into the house. Katsuki immediately rounds on the man as he shuts the door behind him. "Alright, tell me what the fuck is going on here. You're not the shitty hair I know so where the fuck am I."
The fae gives a little glare at the yelled demands, but answers anyway. "You are correct. I am not your Kirishima. In fact, call me Riot for the time you are here."
Bakugou butts in, "And where exactly am I?"
Riot continues, "You are in the land of the fae."
Katsuki shakes his head in disbelief. "What you mean like those shitty changeling stories? I got fucking faeiry-napped or whatever!"
Riot rolls his eyes at that one. "Yes like the changeling story. Your fae counterpart is in your place in the human world, while you are here."
Bakugou begins stalking towards Riot with a determined grin on his face. "Ok shitty hair part two, you're gonna take me back to my world right the fuck now."
Riot doesn't back down from Bakugou's advance at all, he stands his ground. "I can't take you back."
As soon as Riot says that Katsuki is lunging forward to throw a punch at the fae. Bakugou is yanked forward as Riot easily catches his fist. Katsuki turns to charge again, but is quickly knocked on his ass by the fae. Bakugou notes that the fae version of Kirishima is less "built like a wall of muscle" than his human counterpart, but just as strong. Katsuki goes to try to sweep the fae's legs out from under him, but is yet again dodged. As he attempts to stand again he is pinned underneath Riot, the fae looking rather irritated.
"Look, I knew you have a shitty attitude, but this won't happen here. I was nice enough to help Zero out by letting you stay here. You can't go back because you're time isn't up yet. You are stuck here for at least three weeks."
Bakugou lays on the ground rather stunned. Not only had he never been taken down this easily, but no one had the balls to scold him like a naughty child while doing it. His brain unhelpfully notes that this fae Kiri looks rather attractive like this. He finally finds his words. "Three weeks huh? Why the hell am I stuck here for three weeks!?"
Riot lets him up after another moment. "If you stop trying to attack me I will explain what's going on and why you're here."
Bakugou huffs, but nods. "Fine, get on with it then."
Notes: I hope you all enjoyed the first chapter! I know it will be rather confusing at first, but I will give you a little breakdown to help. The fae counterparts will go by their hero name, except for Shouto, who will just use Todoroki. This is partly to keep you from being confused when reading as to which characters are interacting, but also a bit of the fae lore that names are powerful. The fae world is like a mirrored version of the human world, hence why things appear similar, but with a twist. I will explain this more as the story continues. Feel free to drop me comments if you have questions, or just wanna tell me your thoughts. Thank you for reading!
