Quick message to those still waiting for Overlord from the Stars.
I have to apologize yet again for this. I will explain it quite rather than use it as an excuse. While I admit that I haven't been writing it often I have run into several issues in writing it. Fall Part 2 is currently in a nearly unreadable state so I have to fix that, I had to go back and fix an issue in the most recent chapter where it seemed as though Nova had hugged the former Overlord, that was not the intention as a part got swapped around please reread the chapter. And I actually made a lot of progress on the new chapter, but an error caused almost all of it to be lost, and for me that kind of thing always makes me very reluctant to rewrite it, mainly as it is never as natural or good the second time.
Really sorry, again, for the delays. I really can't give any kind of estimation on when it will be out. This is just a project to get me back in the mood for writing this style and maybe give some of you something until then.
Now I'll go on with this story, for those who are here for it.
The Overlord was bored, rarely a good thing for anyone, but this time he was really bored. He had tried everything. Destroying a town, slaughtering and torturing people, burning down a temple, spending time with his mistresses, and just about everything else he had at his disposal. Things just weren't fun anymore. He wished that he could abandon this Dark Domain he had built, leave these boring peoples he has conquered, and enjoy a bit of an adventure on which he could see new places, meet new people, fight powerful enemies, and do all the evil things he wanted.
The Dark Lord slouched back. Times like this he actually envied heroes, always going off with a merry band of friends wasting their youth away with quests and romance. The Overlord slouched back even further as he remembered how boring most of his childhood in the Netherworld was, nothing but training and minions, ice and lava.
As the Overlord began to close his eyes his attention was caught by something... something falling. With the fastest motion a man in such armor can manage he threw himself into the center of the room and caught it. He didn't know why he had been compelled to catch it, but it a minute before he took another breath.
When finally he relaxed he stood up straight and looked at what he held in his hand. It was a small object wrapped in old and worn parchment. With his curiosity piqued he gently, with such unusual caution, unwrapped it without tearing the parchment. What was revealed was a small instrument and its wrapping shown to be a music sheet. This small instrument would have been meaningly to him normally, but now he felt drawn to it.
The Overlord pulled down the cloth covering his mouth and brought the object to his lips. As he attempted to use the instrument his motions changed as though guided by something more. He began to play, each note on the sheet glowing and rising into the air as it was played. The Tower shook and rumbled as the gate came to life and the minions went into a panic. Still the Overlord played the strange melody's beautiful tune. At last he closed his eyes at the very last note as the gate opened.
It was warm. As I slowly opened my eyes light flooded my vision and sound began to fill my ears with the birds and bugs of the forest. My senses came to me quick enough, yet I was still so comfortable lying on a grassy hillside under the sun of a cloudless sky. I had never really experienced such a simple pleasant thing. Honestly I did really feel like I could lay there forever... unfortunately for me, fate had other plans, also a hobby of throwing fireballs at me.
I rolled to the left narrowly dodging a ball of magic that left a patch of grass blackened. Quickly I rose to my feet and looking out before me I saw a large, blue, and glistening lake in the direction from which the spell had come, but I saw no sign of my attacker. Naturally though, getting up as fast as that has a nasty side effect of making you black out. I attempted to catch my balance, but I found it was different than I was used to, and so I fell back on my rear.
"Are you alright?"
I turned to see a young girl in a green riding cloak, her hair long, red, and very poofy. I was usually unconcerned with the existence of children, but this one confused me, for though she seemed only a child she also stood over me as I sat, but I was a towering beast. I was... I looked to my arms, not nearly as large and overwhelmed with muscles, though my blue skin and markings didn't change.
"Hey, if I ask you a question like that and you don't answer I might just take that to mean you're not alright, if not hurt, then in the head."
I looked at her, this annoying girl who saw fit to pester me, intending to scare her off with my fierce glowing eyes, and if all else failed I'd just have to smite her. At first it seemed to work as her eyes grew wide, but quickly I found myself pushed to the side as she launched herself into me, "Look out!" She cried out as a fireball flew past.
I didn't know the origin of the attacks, but I had to focus on the fight. I rolled over pulling the girl with me as we dodged more fireballs. Quickly I got on my feet and knelt down, the girl was to my left and I held a hand behind myself to keep her back as I stared into the water as a hideous monster rose from it. A scaley green abominations with red fins and huge lips.
"A zora! Disgusting evil monsters." She made known the monster's name.
That ugly thing made one big mistake though, it appeared in the water. As I did each time I caste a spell since I was a kid I shot my hand forwards to let forth a torrent of lightning... I had to throw away my bewilderment at the lack of magic just in time to dodge the ball of flame the zora spit out.
"You're going to get yourself hurt! We have to go, it won't follow us beyond the water."
It would have been a smart plan. Clearly I was in a body much more frail and less inclined to magic, but as Overlord my pride was not so easily thrown away. I jumped over to a nearby tree and, just like when I was a small boy, I pulled at a large branch. At first it did not budge, and my confidence in my power began to waver, but such a thing was not alowed. With a burning sensation in my hand I tore the branch free and spun around as a fireball barely singed my silver hair and struck the tree setting it instantly ablaze!
With my new club I charged to the edge of the water and leapt into the air swinging my club down on the zora, who only raised his arm to block me. I struck him with all the force I could manage and was rewarded with the beautiful sound of a crack! My smirk vanished when the zora threw a right hook at me forcing me under the water. I had never dared go into water deeper than my chest, so it was obvious I wouldn't stand much of a chance as the ugly merman rushed at me attempting a grapple for my neck. I tried to swing my club, but found that I was left with only a broken stick.
With one hand I held off the claws and with the other I began trying to jab at the monster's neck with my "weapon." I could not strike with the same power underwater, not that my strength had even been what I recalled, and the edge kept sliding across the zora's slippery scales. My confidence again was in danger, but with my animalistic drive to live I struggled more. With one more blow I sent the wooden stake into the zora's neck with my own pained hand!
As blood began to color the water I felt the monster's claws slash across my left shoulder and chest. When I finally began to think it was over for me a pair of hands grabbed my right arm and dragged me onto the shore. That girl, who had never met me before, who knew nothing of the atrocities I had committed, she had refused to run and now she threw herself between me and the zora that had crawled up from the mud, it's gaping mouth alight with magic. I felt as though everything, myself included, was in slow motion. I saw the girl's smiling face as she bravely held her back to the zora and stayed over me. I was never a good man, but I felt so certain that I could not let this courageous girl die for my sake. I reached out to grab her, to throw her out of the way. I was to late as the fireball flew towards us.
A flash of magic light and a strange man in a green tunic was between us and the zora. In his right hand the shield from which he had cast the spell of reflection sending the fireball right back to the zora finishing it for good.
My blurry and darkening vision could only let me see one thing more, the man rushing to my side and uttering a short incantation of which my hearing was to muffled to make out. Soon enough my consciousness fadded away.
Perhaps I would see something different every time I awoke? Above my head was now a roof of wood. Below my head was a soft pillow.
I tried to get up, but the pain made me rethink that plan. At least I knew I wasn't dead. Looking to my right I found wooden walls, a small window, and shelves full of handcrafted toys. To my left I saw only another wall at first, but I felt a weight to my side. Looking down more I saw a poofy ball of red hair with its face sunk into the bed next to me. Perhaps it was from my moving around so much, but she quickly raised her head and looked at me. Only once before had I seen eyes look at me with such childish joy.
"Dad, come quickly! He's awake!" She called out as she ran over to the door.
Moments later a man came in. He had a kind face with large pointed ears and a bit of a long nose, blue eyes that burned with courage, and reddish-blonde hair hanging to the right of his face. He smiled gently as he sat in a chair to my side. Over in the doorway stood the girl, along with a woman in a fine red dress who looked to be almost the adult version of that girl.
The man placed his hand on my chest, "Life." He said as I felt his magic soothe the pain just a little more.
As I sat up the man looked at me and asked, "Can you tell us your name?"
