Their lips pressed together, and they knew. As they were lifted up by camp members, they knew it wasn't right. Clarisse dumped them in the river, talking about how it took them so long to get together. There was a reason for that.
Beneath the surface they spoke.
"So this is it, huh?" Percy started rather lamely.
"Yeah. We'll be the perfect couple," Annabeth told him.
" Annie... this isn't something that is just going to exist without affecting us. We'll have to actually act like we're dating. That involves kissing in public and holding hands..." he trailed off, unsure if he should continue. " You're basically my older sister Annabeth. It felt wrong just to kiss you that one time. I don't know if I can do this, if I can do... us."
Annabeth understood. Of course she did. Neither of them wanted to do this. The circumatances just made it the best option. It was a plan worthy of Athena on the surface. There were many flaws though. What if someone found out? Could they really keep up the facade forever?
"There will always doubts and problems Percy, but we'll deal with them as we go; together. Whether it be as my boyfriend or my brother, I know you will always stand by my side."
And that's what they did. They acted out the parts perfectly, knowing that they could never be who they wanted to be.
