Chu Chu Runs Away Part 1

It was the year of 1970 and the month of September as Henry and Anne went out into their Sacramento California neighborhood.

"Chu Chu," Henry called. "Chu Chu!"

"Oh, Henry," Anne said. "we have got to find Chu Chu, we've just got to find him!"

"Don't worry, Annie," Henry said. "we'll find him."

"I hope you're right, Henry," 6-year-old Anne said. "I love Chu Chu more than vanilla chocolate chunk ice cream! It would cause me too much pain to lose him!"

Suddenly, rain began to pour down in buckets around Henry and Anne.

"Jumping Jimminy! It's a downpour," Henry exclaimed. "come on, Anne! We'd best go home now!"

Back at the Chan residence, Akiko was trying to feed a 1-month-old Nancy who was in her high chair while the rest of the chan children sat at the kitchen table, with 2-year-old Flip in a booster seat so he could reach his bowl of maccaroni and cheese.

"Come on, Nancy, have some more peas," Akiko said. "don't you want Daddy to see how big you've grown once he gets back from Missouri?"

Suzie saw Anne and Henry burst into the kitchen from the back door.

"Any luck finding Chu Chu, you two?" Suzie asked Anne and Henry.

"It's no use, Suzie," Henry said. "Anne and I have looked everywhere!"

"Yeah," Anne panted breathlessly. "we must have run through the entire neighborhood! That dog of ours is gone!"

"Chu Chu? Gone?" Flip asked.

"I just can't believe it," Anne's older twin brother, 6-year-old Alan asked. "why would Chu Chu run away?"

"My guess is," Henry said, glancing over at Stanley. "someone didn't shut the backyard gate all the way."

"Hey," Stanley shot back at Henry. "don't blame me!"

"Well, how else could Chu Chu have gotten loose, huh?" Anne asked Stanley fiercely.

"Hey, it was an accident!" Stanley protested.

"We know it was an accident," Akiko said to Stanley gently. "it's not your fault."

"It isn't?" Stanley asked his mother.

"No," Akiko said to Stanley. "anybody could've left the gate open."

"But only that dum dum of a brother of mine did it," Anne commented. "leave it to Stanley to let Chu Chu get away!"

"Anne!" Akiko scolded sharply.

"Sorry, Mom." Anne sighed.
