"Miria?" the voice of a young girl called out. The fear in it broke Miria's normally stone heart, but she plastered on a smile as she stepped into the bedroom for all of Lily Fairchild's adopted children to share.

"Hey, Kiran!" How Miria could act so happy when she was breaking on the inside, she didn't know. "What's up?"

Kiran was a five year old girl with silky dark hair, smooth brown skin, and adorably big brown eyes. Since Miria—at the age of fourteen—was the oldest child in Lily Fairchild's home, she made it her responsibility to take care of everyone else, as Fairchild herself neglected to do so. And taking care of everyone included putting the younger children to sleep at night and stealing a bit of money from Lily Fairchild. Lily Fairchild had a lot of money, except she was busy drinking it up—literally.

Taking care of everyone also meant that she protected them from Lily...

"Can you sing to me?" Kiran asked softly. "I know you have to go soon, but I can't sleep." Kiran looked at her with big pleading eyes. Miria glanced at the clock. She had to leave at 8:30 with Fairchild to go to one of Lily's rich friends' home. It was 8:25. Lily could wait.

"Of course," Miria said softly. Then she opened her eyes and began to sing a haunting song. She didn't know what she was singing, but she knew the song since forever. The song flowed in her blood, like a confirmation that she was something special...

Suddenly, what she was singing registered in her messed up head. The last verse was about little children... drowning. Miria faltered. She didn't have a problem with the song itself; it had a good tune. No, what she had a problem with was why she knew it. And more importantly, whether she seriously messed up. While she knew that yes, she was very messed up, she was drawing a blank for the first question.

But Kiran was asleep, and Lily would have her head if she was late to her friend's house. So she shoved her worries aside and headed out.

Miria got out of the front seat of Lily's black car. Unfortunately, the car ride there was far from silent. It was worse than Lily's idea of a conversation. Lily had been testing how long Miri could go without cringing—um, sorry, she'd been singing with the radio. Ignoring the stabbing pain in her ears, she looked up at Lily's friend's house.

It was big. It was bold. And to Miria, it was a bit of an overkill. She planned to just sit on the stairs of the house and read something on Books app on her phone, but maybe sitting on the stairs wasn't such a good idea; they'd probably be gold-plated or something, the nemesis of anyone who likes to sit on stairs.

Why was she even here? Okay, there's no point in asking pointless questions. Lily's friend probably invited Miria because she had a son a year or so older, who probably invited his girlfriend; what was she supposed to do, watch them make out?

Lily's friend's son, Adam, was in Miria's school last year. And he was a total prat. Despite being only in middle school, he had girlfriends. Yeah, plural. He went through them like Miria went through ice cream. The last girlfriend she was aware of was... Karly? Kelli?

Either way, Miria followed Lily inside.

Adam's mother opened the door with a bright smile, blonde highlights glimmering.

"Lily!" she exclaimed.

"Petunia!" Lily exclaimed back. "We've got to catch up!"

"Come in, come in!" Petunia simpered. Then, she saw Miria. "Oh, you must be Miria! My son speaks so highly of you!"

Miria raised an eyebrow. "We don't even go to the same school."

Petunia waves my observation away. "Whatever. Let's go in, shall we?"

Miria was scrolling down a Kindle book on her phone when a disgustingly feminine voice called her upstairs.

"Miria?" Karly/Kelli called. "Come up, please," She giggled.

Miria sighed. She had been hoping to avoid all contact with Karly/Kelli and Adam. But did she have a choice anymore? Well, yes, but running away seemed a tad bit dramatic.

Although it would solve a lot of problems.

Miria shook her head. Then she headed up the gold-plated stairs, doing her best to not slip.

"Oh, Miria?"

Why did she sound like she belonged in a horror movie?

Miria just shook her head again and continued. But she knew something was seriously wrong when she got to Adam's room.

Why?

Well, for one, there was a trail of blood dribbling down from his room.

And two?

When she opened the door, Karly/Kelli smirked at her. And god, her legs...

And like the true Gryffindor she was, Miria turned and sprinted away.
