"The Fall of Judge Briggs"
By TwilightSparkle3562
…
Oscar Briggs was a man who swore an oath to uphold the law as a judge, responsible for carrying out sentences for the convicted members of society. Now, he was before the judicial disciplinary committee for overturning a conviction just before he was sentenced, resulting in a young porn star to be subjected to perverted men. In the gallery, Prosecutor Daniel Barba watched with keen interest, eager for the judge who abused his power to lose everything he had ever worked for.
"This hearing will come to order," said the supreme justice, banging the gavel. "Oscar Briggs, you are here before us today because of your outrageous actions long after a guilty verdict had been handed down. Thus, in doing so, you have abused your authority as a judge and are here before us today on the ranks of disbarment. How say you?"
"Your honor," replied Briggs, looking right at the people who would decide his fate. "I made a firm and fair decision on overturning the verdict against Daniel Pryor. The accused was merely using the trial as a way of getting herself attention for her career as a porn star."
"Judge Briggs," the supreme justice said. "In the complaint we received from ADA Barba, you were abusing your power as a judge."
"Absolutely not, I was not in any way, abusing my power. If I let the verdict stand…I felt like I would be doing a grave injustice to the city of New York."
The judges were not convinced.
"Judge Briggs, were you aware of the consequences of your decision after the trial? Ms. Barnes was repeatedly raped…"
"That is her decision…" Briggs attempted to say, only to be silenced by the gavel.
"She had been raped by five men in the span of five days since you overturned the verdict. Furthermore, we are demanding that the man you had set free be brought back to trial and all of the supposed lack of evidence you set aside be given a second look.
Briggs' eyes widened in disbelief and anger. Turning back to Barba who smiled smugly, Briggs became angry at the fact that he was about to have a decision he made overturned.
"Your honors," he pleaded. "You can't do this!"
"We just did, Mr. Briggs," the chief justice said. "I am giving the New York Police Department the full authority to arrest Daniel Pryor and have him retried on rape charges. And furthermore, that because you have violated your power as a judge and are a contributor to the recent rapes of Evie Barnes, this tribunal recommends that you be permanently disbarred from practicing law for life."
Everything that Oscar had worked for was gone just like that, and all because he was acting in his own best interest. Angered and humiliated, he turned back to ADA Barba, who felt a sense of vindication against this former judge.
"This tribunal is adjourned," the chief justice said as the disgraced Oscar Briggs listened to the gavel pound. As he left, he turned to Barba.
"I hope you are happy, Mr. Barba," he snapped angrily. "You've gotten your appeal at the cost of everything I ever worked for!"
But Barba said nothing and just stood there as the former judge left the courtroom. He had abused his power and now was paying the price at the cost…of his career.
