This is a simple one shot based off of a beautiful ballad called Never Enough sung by Loren Allred from the movie THE GREATEST SHOWMAN
DISCLAIMER: I do not own any of these characters they belong to DICK WOLF
"Then what was it all for?" Olivia questioned. Her brown eyes that once mirrored bark of a Willow Tree now consumed with sadness began to fill with tears.
"I-I don't know..." Elliot stumbled. He regretted this day but he knew it would come. The day he would walk away from the woman he loved most leaving her empty.
The thought of leaving Olivia was a thought he couldn't bare. He regretted the moment the words left his mouth seeing her heart break and being the reason why was something he never planned. He loved her more than life itself and they both knew it but sadly it was the same reason he had to leave. Them choosing each other over the job could cause them their lives and he didn't want to be the reason she would loose hers.
"That's bullshit." Olivia whispered. "That's bullshit and you know it." her voice growing weaker yet still intense.
"Liv-"
"No." She interuppted.
"Olivia...I'm sorry." Elliot pleaded. "You and I both knew this day would come...things have changed Liv and we can't go back." He tried to reach out for her but he failed when she stepped back. "Liv...please." He begged.
"WHAT?... PLEASE WHAT?" She yelled making eye contact with him. "Just let you walk out and feel nothing? Just let you leave and forget twelve years? Just let you leave me here to pick up the pieces you leave behind?" Her heart was being destroyed and it was now more than evident that she was hurting.
"Liv you know thats not what I want. I just...I just can't do this anymore." He admitted attempting to move closer towards her.
"Do what?" She wondered her eyes now flowing with tears as she moved further away from him.
"THIS!" He yelled flinging his arms out to the side. "You know just as well as I do the we both got lost in the job."
"In the job or with each other?" He realized Olivia was aware of the true nature behind this conversation none the less he was stunned by her words.
"Who are we kidding Elliot? Your wife? The Captain? Certainly not each other." She huffed while wiping a fallen tear . "No matter what gets said here. We both know what this is really about."
She was right and he knew it. "I don't know what I'm supposed to say." He sat down on her couch placing his head in the palm of his hands.
"The truth." She stated simply.
"Liv...We...You and I..." Elliot couldn't find the right words.
Olivia scoffed while rolling her eyes arms still folded. "First you come to my apartment to tell me you're leaving the squad. Then you tell me its because we got lost in the job and now when I ask you to tell me the truth you can't. Unbelievable." She chuckled.
"You think this is easy for me?" He stood. " You think I wanna walk away from the job? You think I expected for this too happen Liv?" He was growing angrier.
"WHO ARE YOU KIDDING ELLIOT?" Olivia wondered. "We knew where this was headed. Hell the whole Goddamn precint knew." They now stood face to face eyeing one another."If you want to leave then leave but don't lie to yourself...and don't lie to me." She choked out holding back more tears.
He eyed her for a moment he knew she was right but couldn't bring himself to admission. He knew they had fallen for eachother even his kids saw it...they were too close. Now more than ever was the time to just let it out and acknowledge the Elephant in the room and yet standing infront of the woman he loved was not enough to make him admit it.
Breaking the silence Olivia motioned towards her door. "I think you should go Elliot." She whispered not being able to look at him.
"No." He begged.
She raised her head and eyed him. "Elliot just leave."
"Liv don't do this." Elliot pleaded.
She sighed heavily. " Elliot for twelve years I have risked my life, blown off countless of men, looked out for your family, I even helped you fix your marriage. Do you know why?"
Elliot was silent.
"All because I loved you...and yet somehow that wasnt enough." There it was the admission he couldn't give her. " I love you but I won't sit here and allow myself to take a backseat to your life anymore. If you're not man enough to admit that you love me then I think you need to leave." She stated brushing her brown hair from her face writtled with sadness.
This time they were looking eachother dead in the eyes hers filled with hurt and his were beginning to fill with tears.
"Liv I'm sorry." Was all he could say as he walked towards her. She shook at her not taking her eyes off of him
"So am I." Placing a gentle kiss on his lips and pulling back.
He was stunned. "Liv-' He started but she silenced him with the wave of her hand.
"Go." Just like that she opened the door looking away ushering him out in to the empty hallway of her apartment building he paused to lookback at her for a final moment.
"Goodbye." The heartbreak in her voice was enough to sink a thousand ships. Elliot just looked at her realizing he just lost the one thing he never wanted to let go. Before he could say another word the door closed...not only in his face but on his final opportunity to admit how he truly felt.
