They stood in silence, faces illuminated by nothing but the moonlight, searching each other's faces for the slightest hint of what they were thinking. This exact moment - the tension, the longing - it was not something that they were new to. But this felt different. The air was unseasonable cool, a slight breeze pushing stray strands of hair across her face. Cautiously, he swept his thumb across her cheek, brushing the strands behind her ear. She closed her eyes and leant into his touch, resting her cheek on the palm of his hand - but only for a moment.
She did not want to be the first to cross that line. Usually she would have no problem with initiating this kind of thing - especially when it was something she had wanted for this long. But with him, it was not that straightforward. There were circumstances... rules... reasons why this was a bad idea. But the longer he stared into her eyes, the harder it was to resist. He did not remove his touch from her skin, however. Instead, he softly glided his fingertips down to her jawline and then back, finally resting them behind her ear and gently supporting the back of her head. He leaned in, ever so slightly. A stranger, passing them in the street may not have even noticed his slight shift of weight, but she did. And suddenly, a small push of wind against her back was all it took to give into the magnetic pull she had been fighting this whole time.
Her lips crashed into his as they both gave into temptation. She could taste the coffee on his breath - both sweet and bitter - and her head spun, making the world around her feel like it was slipping away. His free hand made its way to the small of her back and she moved her hands so that they rested gently on either side of his face. In perfect synchrony, they pulled their bodies together. Maybe, just maybe, if they held each other close enough this moment wouldn't have to end. But, alas, it did. He - hesitantly - pulled away first, not wanting to push his luck too far, and let his forehead rest on hers.
"We should not have done that." She whispered, trying to regain her senses.
"I know."
She reached out and grabbed his hand, tangling her fingers with his. She placed a gentle pick on his lips before pulling her body away from his and walking away.
With each step, her body ached.
Cold air brushed over the once warm spots here his body had made contact with hers
Once again, she felt empty.
But that was just how it had to be.
