Chapter 1:
(34 BBY)
Mirar. The planet's atmosphere was a constant warm temperature, with a grey sheet of clouds stretching endlessly across the planet. Residing in the inner rim, the bright silver planet sat proudly.
The calm serenity of Jucan city was abolished by the torrential blaster fire of the raider's. The city burned with fires that illuminated the night sky, bodies strewn about the streets, belonging to soldiers, citizens and invaders. Queen Aila Shan stood atop her balcony, looking out at the carnage ensuing in her city. Tears strolled down her face, but her flat-emotionless expression never subsided. Below, she watched as a blue-white blade sprung to life, she could not see its wielder, but she could see the fallen bodies that it left in its wake. The blade moved swiftly through the ranks of invaders before dying out.
Aila looked up as a large blast was coming down in her direction, but was stopped by the shields. The royal palace resided on its own island, connected by a long bridge, a bright blue shield guarded the entire palace, but the integrity was dropping quickly. The entire bridge was merely a cauldron of war in her eyes, blue and red flashes concealing her view of anything other than silhouettes.
Her gaze fell to her right as she watched a figure scale the side of the palace, acrobatically moving from pillar to window and finally making its way beside her on the balcony. Jedi Master Kanok Astik stood beside her, the kiffar man had a powerful build, unlike other Jedi masters she knew, he wore a black and gold sleeveless tunic which showed the traditional tattoos of his people. Within the city, seven green and blue lightsabers activated, chopping down invaders left and right. Kanok's students at the Jedi battle training facility located near the west entrance of the city.
"I've pushed their forces back enough that my students can buy us some time, but we need to get you out of here as fast as possible."
"No, this is my city, my home. I'll die before I flee from it when it needs me the most."
"You'll die, you won't be able to do much if you're dead."
The Queen fell silent, letting out a slight sigh before looking back out at her burning city. The Jedi lightly placed his index and middle finger on her cheek and moved her head straight, looking into her eyes. "It's my job to protect you...Both of you."
Their gaze moved into the master bedroom, looking onto a chair where a young child sat in fear of the destruction outside, but he remained calm even through this.
"I need to get you both out of here. End of discussion."
"As Queen of this planet, I will not be leaving."
"And as a Jedi knight and your husband, I'm saying I have to get you both out of here."
Even in the time of peril, she still blushed whenever she heard that. Your husband. She was really married to a Jedi knight, a defender of the galaxy. A Queen and a Jedi, a powerful couple, though she knew the Jedi council would not approve of such things whatsoever which is why Kanok spent most of his time on Mirar and rarely reported back to the Jedi council unless he truly needed too. He took her hand, his love for her burning brighter than the flames below, he basked in the moment he had with her. Through all the death, destruction and chaos ensuing within the city, he still had her, he still had his family. Leaning in, he placed a kiss upon her lips. Though it had only been a few seconds, it felt like an eternity. And at the end of the kiss, her words sliced the romantic essence between the two.
"I can't leave. This is my home and regardless of whatever you do, I will never flee from my home in a time of crisis."
Kanok couldn't help but grin at her words, so strong, so independent. In the corner of his eye, his joy quickly switched to focus as he saw a flaming projectile advancing upon them. It was coming fast and he didn't have much time to react, he was able to use the Force to push her into the room guiding his lover to the bed next to their son. As he released his grip, he leapt into the room, rolling to recover. The balcony was reduced to rubble almost immediately after Kanok evaded the blast.
"They've finally pressed broke through the shield to the palace. We're leaving." All sense of negotiating with his wife was destroyed along with the balcony, Kanok took his son and wife by hand, leading the two from the room. The halls were clear, and dark due to all the power in the palace being sent to the shield, all the power in the palace was out until the generator's cooldown, but that wouldn't be for several more hours. The moon and red and blue blaster fire from the city illuminated their path to the main hall.
As the three entered the main hall, about fifty feet from the hangar entrance, they stopped at the side of bodies spread about the ground. A figure clad in a black cloak descended from the pillars above. Kanok and the others could only see an endless pit of shadow. The bright moonlight was all the light that was needed, it showed the figure of the mysterious individual, revealing broad shoulders, Kanok could tell he was taller but not by much. Kanok came to the assumption that this was a man before him, but it made no difference to him.
The man unsheathed a silver grip and in a matter of seconds a red flame ignited from the end of it. Two yellow eyes pierced into Kanok's light brown. Kanok slowly moved his son behind his mother, silent yet observing. Both men's eyes moved about as if scanning each section of the opposing man's body. Kanok's weapon erected from his grip, the low hum emitted from both blade's sung in unison. Before Aila could process, her husband vanished along with the man, both men moving at one another with unnatural speed, both meeting in the middle, as the blades met it was like a strike of lightning. The two moved in similar unison, causing Aila to believe that they used the same lightsaber form. An acrobatic, yet aggressive and fluent form. Both moved with advanced and seemingly effortless movements. After a continuous onslaught from both men, they finally moved to a standstill where Kanok took the opportunity to learn more about his opponent.
His stance was strong, but he did not root himself, he stayed nimble and light on his feet. But the aggression he implemented along with such control, this man was not just a random lackey, he was trained in this style. Beneath the hood all he could see were yellow eyes, it was as if an animal was standing before him.
Both men sprang to action, clashing weapons. Kanok sent a vertical slash at the man, it was easily blocked but that was merely a distraction for the powerful kick that Kanok planted on the man's chest. The man stumbled backwards, giving Kanok a perfect opportunity to sweep the man's legs. The man was raised a few feet off the ground, but effortlessly, he threw himself backwards. The front of his foot smashing upward into Kanoks chin. Kanok was dropped to the ground, but quickly recovered and the men found themselves at another standstill.
As the men were about to engage one another, royal guards sprinted to their aid. The spray of each blaster was directed towards the mysterious man, each were deflected. Kanok swept his blade low, trying to take out the legs, the man jumped in order to evade, but was sent flying backwards into a nearby pillar by a gust of Force energy Kanok launched at him.
"Men! Fire!"
Before they could fire, a large blast rocked the palace main corridor. Debris and rubble fell from the ceiling above, the man recovered quickly and as he reignited his blade, destroyed the falling debris. The guards and Kanok shielded the Queen and child, luckily out of the rubble's path. The man turned his eyes onto the Jedi across from him once more, who was ready for an attack. Rubble still falling from above, but both men seemed to not be phased by it. A second set of guards found their way to the corridor, shuffling into a routine formation around the Queen.
"Take them to the hangar and get her on a shuttle to Coruscant. I will arrive shortly after I've handled this."
"Yes sir!" A guard spoke, immediately rushing the two to the hangar. Luckily for them, Kanok positioned himself behind the group, meaning he was the first line of defense. Kanok did not anticipate the man's next move. It was fast and the most crucial of this entire chess game of a showdown. The man tossed his lightsaber up and caught it like a spear. Moving quickly out of Kanok's direct line and in a swift motion, threw his weapon, guiding the blade with the Force towards Aila. Kanok watched as the lightsaber flew in the direction of his wife, his heart racing at how fast it was moving. It was as if time moved slowly, he could only watch the blade soar through the air nearing it's target. MOVE! He roared at himself, watching as the blade neared its target. Kanok sprung back to life, and with a valiant gesture threw himself in the pathway of the lightsaber, the scarlet blade plunging itself into Kanok's back. With the Force, the man summoned the blade back to him.
"NO!" Aila cried, her screams echoing off the walls of the corridor. Kanok looked Aila in the eyes and mouthed the words, I love you. Before his body fell to the ground. Breaking from his cowering, Soren sprinted to his father. "Dad, get up. You've gotta get up." Tears filled the boy's eye, as his father's hand rose to his cheek. "I will always be with you son, always." As he fell dead, in his son's arms.
"Number two." The man said with a great amount of satisfaction "Come with me boy, we're going on a trip."
The man neared Soren, the boy's heart raced, but he couldn't move. He was completely frozen in his fear, his father's lifeless corpse in his arms. But anger rushed through him, this man had taken his father and now he wanted to take him, then potentially his mother! He wouldn't allow that, he couldn't allow that! Soren pushed his hand out, "GO AWAY!" The boy exclaimed, not knowing what would happen but he'd seen his father do it so he figured he'd try it as well. It was his only chance. The man was sent back as if a speeder had crashed into him. Aila's eyes widened at the spectacle before her. He was like his father, but she could feel he was much different from Kanok. Soren had given them some time, ordering her guards to go and retrieve Soren, the remaining guards fired at the man, who recovered quickly from the boys action.
The guards fired a volley of plasma at the warrior, but to no avail the man began to deflect the bolts. Giving two guards time to return the boy to his mother.
"Go, my Queen! We'll stall him, Captain Tyse is already on the shuttle just tell him to go!"
The guards began to close in on the man, moving to different strategic positions, they were doing the best they could to hold his attention for as long as possible. Aila raced with her son to the hangar. The two blast doors flung away from one another, and the two were met by a hulking man, muscles bulging even through his white and gold plastoid armor, a rifle in hand and vibrosword sheathed at his side. Captain Tyse was the captain of the Guard, Kanok put him in charge of retrieving a vessel from the captured hanger; from the corpses of invaders scattered about the hangar, Aila could see he accomplished his task with ease. Captain Tyse was also the personal bodyguard of Soren, given the title of godfather by Kanok and Aila. Only Captain Tyse knew Kanok was the father of the boy.
The conflict increased in the city, nearing its climax, Aila knew she'd truly lost her city. The students of the academy had met their demise, along with a bulk of her city's security. Seeing as it was the Mirar grand military that was attacking, she had no other form of assistance. Baron Valorin had truly taken all from her, but after witnessing her son use the Force, she knew what had to be done in order for him to truly live the life he deserved.
Dropping to his level, Aila hugged her son, his tears soaking her shoulder and his head buried deep to not see the war around him. And for that moment, she felt a sense of calm. Tears streamed down her face, she tightened her grip on her child, placing a kiss on his cheek. Looking into the wet eyes of her son, she began to speak, "Soren...My sweet boy, I love you with all my heart. But you have to go with Tyse to Coruscant. He will get you there safely, I promise."
"I don't want to go. I have to stay here and be strong like dad to protect you! I'll be stronger!" Soren fought back the tears, even though he was only five years old, he knew he shouldn't cry, he'd never seen his father cry so he didn't feel he should either. Such a fire began to burn inside of the boy, his heart racing with determination to get stronger.
"You have to go and become strong enough for all of us," She turned her gaze to the Captain and he watched her with all his attention, "Take him to the Jedi council, I will have a transmission sent over, they should be waiting for you."
"Yes, my Queen."
"Please, I don't want to go." Soren spoke, now breaking into a massive sob. Not understanding what is happening or why he has to evacuate. From above, starfighters flew about blasting one another out of the skies. "It's time for you to go." She grabbed her son and hugged him tight, the tears falling faster now, she had to stay strong, but how? Her city in ruins, her love dead, and now she had to send away her only son. All over power. Baron Valorin's thirst for power, has now taken all she holds dear. Looking over her shoulder, she could see more guards coming to fend off the man but she knew they could only hold him for so long.
Soren watched as his mother removed a necklace Kanok had crafted for her during the beginning of their relationship, a single white tooth with a gold trim spiraling to the tip. The tooth of a Kaiju, a canine creature native to Kiffu forests. With piercing red eyes and an insatiable hunger for the flesh of any creature, this creature has become undoubtedly the most vicious and aggressive creature to ever inhabit Kiffu and potentially one of the top apex predators in the entire galaxy. The tooth symbolized the lover's strength and work ethic as well as Kiffu culture, the gold trim represented Mirar and how Soren was the product of both Kiffu and Mirar. And now it belonged to Soren, as she placed it on her head.
Aila signaled Tyse to come and grab the child. Picking up the prince, he raced to the shuttle, Soren's cries still audible even after the shuttle doors were closed. She watched as the vessel levitated and took off, watching a young Soren beg for his mother at the side window of the ship before it had escaped the atmosphere. A final tear rolled down her face, as she watched a small hovercraft descend from the sky, landing a few feet from her, her eyes narrowed as she saw the cockpit open. From it, a man clad in a black cape and royal black and gold tunic beneath. The man stood tall, and as a soft breeze swept past the man's cape, it revealed a sword sheathed at his side.
"Valorin." Aila spoke, the disgust visible in his voice.
"Aila...my darling sister. Do you like what I've done with the place?" The man spoke, extending his arm outward and set his gaze upon the burning city below. A smile stretched across his face, and Aila could see it. Her brother was truly gone. Due to him being younger than Aila, he was given the position of Baron while Aila was appointed Queen. Though the Baron and Queen ran two separate cities on the planet, a power struggle usually erupted when a Baron or Baroness would want more ground. The King or Queen became the figurehead of Mirar and was able to make the laws and final decisions in Mirar politics. This has been the power struggle for centuries of Mirar history.
"You're mad! How could you find satisfaction in this! People live down there! Our people!"
"No your people! When they decided to kick me off the high council! I decided. You aren't fit to rule, I hold the strongest military force on the planet, and I have the experience needed to truly rule this planet to become the powerhouse we were always meant to be, not in the shadows of the Republic, we are meant to rule the Republic."
"You've truly lost yourself, you were once a strong and noble general for us, then you chose to put the entire planet in danger when you decided to go to do deals with the Black Sun! You compromised the lives of the entire population! All for power and greed!"
"Maybe you're right, maybe you're not. None of that matters now, the end result was inevitable to end this way. I'll let you leave here, if you wish. You're my sister, so I owe you that much you are my sister, but just know this, if you try and foil my rule, I'll rain down on you with the entire might of my forces and I'll destroy everything you love, which doesn't seem like it'll be all too hard anymore."
Aila couldn't help but let her tears flow, and Valorin smiled at his sisters pain before returning back to the hovercraft he arrived in. She watched as he flew away vanishing in the thick plume of smoke created by the seemingly eternal fire below.
She removed a holoprojector from the pocket of her robe, placing it on the ground, she began her transmission to the Jedi temple, setting it to automatically send when it did not hear her words for more than two seconds.
"And if my dear Soren ever sees this, I love yo-" A crimson blade sprung through her back and escaped through her chest. The projector died and released a faint beep, the sound caused Aila to smile, knowing her transmission was in transit to the Jedi temple on Coruscant.
Looking up to the blazing sky for one final time.. It's your turn, Soren She thought, before falling lifeless upon the man's blade. The man retracted his blade, watching the Queen's lifeless body sink to the floor.
Within the high Jedi council tower, sat the council. In a perfect formation, the chairs of each master were placed in perfect alignment with it's twins. Jedi Master Mace Windu entered the chamber, taking his seat silently. The entire council had been called on by Jedi Master Yoda, none but him knew the matters of this meeting. Seemingly Master Windu was the last member to enter.
"Called you here, I have. Watch this transmission, you must."
In the center of the chairs, a hologram beamed to life. Queen Aila Shan stood before the council.
"This is Queen Aila Shan of Mirar. Jucan city has fallen to the hands of Baron Valorin Shan, my brother has taken control of the city. My brother's intent is for power and what he will do this with new found power I don't know, but after today... he will be the new ruler of Mirar. Jedi Master Kanok Astik of the Jedi combat training facility has fallen to the hands of a dark Jedi. My son, Soren Shan will be arriving soon. Please take him, train him. And if you can't train him, please protect him. I feel something is going to happen soon and regardless of what happens, all I ask is that he is safe. He has shown his ability to use the Force, I've witnessed it. I know his age makes a difference, but please Master Jedi, you're the only chance my boy has at truly bringing peace to the galaxy. And if my dear Soren ever sees this, I love yo-" The masters watched the sight of Aila being executed, shock filled the chamber. However, Mace did not seem to pay much mind to the Queen's demise. But the words of her attacker struck them harder. "You got in my way of the boy, my master will not be pleased." Immediately after, the projection died. An uproar erupted within the chamber, all the masters trying to input their opinions and thoughts on the message. All but Yoda and Mace.
"Kanok." Mace spoke, his head sunk and looked to the floor. His friend. His brother. Gone. The two had come up as best friends in the Jedi Order, despite the Jedi's rule of no attachments. The two had a love for one another that was unmatched, and now he was gone. Mace released a sigh and sat up, he had to look at the bigger picture and not just at his friend's demise.
"Have they truly returned?" Ki-adi Mundi spoke.
"Returned the Sith may have, make assumptions, we cannot. Direct matters, we have. Taken Mirar has been, intervene we cannot. The Jedi way to intervene in these sorts of internal affairs, it is not."
"Agreed." Most of the council spoke.
"If Master Astik has fallen, then the combat facility on Mirar has fallen as well." Mace spoke, breaking out of his mourning.
"We need to address this assailant, he killed Master Astik and the Queen of Mirar. Who knows who else he will kill? Who knows who else is on his side?" Ki-adi Mundi insisted
A powerful wave of energy swept over the council, breaking their concentration on the matters at hand. Pain, innocence, power, weakness all inside of a singular source radiating such energy. The power fumbled the heads of each one, and as they looked out of the windows of the council chamber, a golden and white shuttle entered the atmosphere. The shuttle did not dock at the Republic hangar, nor the public hangar. Rather it moved its way to the entrance of the temple. The vibrations and hum of the engine could be heard throughout the temple .
"Arrived, the child has."
The entire council made their way to the entrance of the temple, not stopping to converse with anyone, this was a mission. Why was this energy so powerful? The most energy any hard ever felt from the council, even Master Yoda was in awe. The shuttle doors slid open. Those outside the vessel were greeted by a hulking man, his armor battered and beaten, almost as much as he had been. Behind the leg of the man, a young boy stood, his head slightly peaking out at those surrounding him. The council could feel the dark energy radiating off him, like a beacon of the dark side. Yet, they could also feel the light as well, as if it was holding back the dark from reaching its final state. The mixture of energies deterred some of the masters from approaching the two, yet Yoda and Mace began to approach.
"I am Captain Tyse of Queen Ail-...Prince Soren's personal guard. I was informed by the Queen to bring Prince Soren here."
"Strong in the force, the boy is." Master Yoda studied the Prince for a moment, "Please, come to me." Yoda's words were now directed to the young boy, both stood the same height, Soren potentially taller but it was hard to gauge with him cowering behind the leg of a giant. Soren looked up to Tyse, as if waiting for permission. Giving the boy a nod of approval, Tyse guided Soren from behind his leg and in front of the Jedi. Tyse laid his hands on Soren shoulders, ready to protect the young prince at all costs.
"Master Yoda, I am. And you are?"
"I-I'm Soren." It was present to everyone listening that the boy was nervous, his voice trembling with every word.
"Calm now, Soren. Strong you are, in the ways of the Jedi, we will train you. Give yourself to the Force, you must. Cut all attachments, you will."
"Cut all attachments? What does that mean?"
"In being a Jedi, in order to truly give ourselves to the Force, we have to let go of our past and cut all ties with those that may have known us before becoming a Jedi." Mace chimed in.
Soren was confused at the words, but Tyse fully understood what the two were saying. Dropping to a knee, he looked Soren into the eyes and smiled. "I've been watching you for a long time kid, I love you. But you have to go with these two and we will see eachother again, I'm going to stay here and help the Republic in anything they need and will make sure that I'm always here, if you ever do need me again." Pulling the boy into him, the two embraced. A single tear rolling down Tyse's cheek, he was saying goodbye to his god son, the person he was set to protect for the rest of his life in order to allow Soren to have the life he deserves. Soren didn't understand what was happening, all he wanted was to see his mom. Though, he the boy was smart and knew that whatever was happening, meant everything was about to change. "Stay strong, and remember, I'll always be here for you."
Tyse gave the Jedi a nod of approval and returned to the cockpit of the ship, a few seconds later Soren was watching Tyse fly off into the distance, merging with the various other vessels traveling about the city and escaping Soren's view. Soren looked at the masters, nervous at the sight of such powerful individuals.
"Master Yoda, the boy seems far older than we usually would accept. Are you sure of this?" Mace Windu spoke, skeptical of the Grand- master's intentions with the boy.
"Train the boy, we will. Trust in the force, we must." Yoda replied, making his way beside Soren, and looking at Mace. Mace knew not to talk back to Yoda, he respected the Grandmaster more than anyone.
"Come now, inside we shall go." Yoda spoke, guiding the young boy inside the temple with him. Soren followed the masters, knowing that whatever was about to happen, was going to change his life forever.
