Chapter 1: The Beginning
Naruto Uzumaki was running for his life. It was his birthday today - he had just turned 4 years old - and he could safely say that it was the worst one yet. For as long as he can remember, his birthday had been a day of suffering rather than celebration. When he lived in the orphanage he would get regular beatings - the worst occuring on his birthday - but now he is on the streets, the villagers can't find him as easily so they don't put the effort in to search for him. Except for today.
On October 10th, one can normally observe many villagers chasing after Naruto screaming bloody murder. But today was different. This time the villagers were joined by several ninja, most chunin ranked, who were determined to take revenge for the destruction caused by the demon's previous rampage.
So this is why Naruto Uzumaki is not only running from a mob of blood-thirsty villagers, but also dodging the various assortments of ninja weapons hurtling at him at speeds that exceed his dodging capabilities. As a result of this, Naruto now finds himself staring at several rapidly approaching shuriken and kunai fearing for his life. But his destiny is not to die here.
All of a sudden, time seemed to slow for Naruto, or rather had his perception of time increased? That must be it. In a feat of extraordinary skill, Naruto managed to weave between the weapons, catching a few and redirecting them back to his assailants, buying himself enough time to escape their view and run off into one of the surrounding forests. Had anyone caught a glimpse of his eyes, they would have seen a pair blood red irises each accompanied by 2 tomoe.
The following months had been accompanied with many changes for Naruto. An increase in attacks from leaf ninja had resulted in the maturation of his sharingan to the 3-tomoe stage. Aside from that, Naruto had also made himself his first friend. She was another homeless orphan - like himself - that he had spotted wandering the streets in a sorry state. While Naruto had never had much to eat, his cunning and intelligence had secured him enough to eat to not suffer from malnutrition. The same could not be said for this girl which resulted in Naruto approaching her and offering her some food.
From that point onwards, an imperishable friendship blossomed between the two. It was rare for you to see them apart - if you even saw them at all. They had sunk into the shadows that they rarely emerged from. Unfortunately, the villagers had noticed this bond and began whispering amongst each other, conspiring with one another, formulating plans for the next anniversary of the Kyuubi's attack.
Thus, on October 10th, we find a 5 year old Naruto and his friend, Hayame, backed into an alley with all of their escape routes cut off. Naruto would give his life for Hayame - should the situation arise - but the world is cruel. The villagers, aided by many ninja, had decided that any friend of the demon could be treated as a demon. So to make the demon suffer they made him watch as his only friend was butchered in front of him whilst the ninja kept him pinned down. Her body dropped to the floor, lifeless. His only friend lost forever. If one were to look at Naruto Uzumaki then, they would observe a change within him; a cold fury now emanating from the depths of his soul drowned within waves of sorrow.
His eyes changed also. Where once they were an ocean blue, now they had shifted to the feared blood red of the sharingan, three tomoe spinning wildly, morphing into an unrecognisable shape: a mangekyou sharingan decorated with three interlocked ovals.
Hatred served to be Naruto's guiding light. An ancient power, hidden for generations, surged through Naruto's every fibre. His mind was running on instinct, that was the only thing he could trust in this world.
'Wood Style: Great Spear Tree,' echoed through the alley. Roots emerged from the ground and speared through every single human present, except Naruto whose face was marred with rage. He rushed over to the downed form of his friend. He looked into her eyes and found them dead, lifeless. Then there was a deep, guttural wail that split the ears of all that heard.
Tears of blood flowed freely from Naruto's eyes as they discharged a black flame, hotter than hell, burning the numerous corpses that littered the alley. Overwhelmed and distraught, Naruto collapsed, immediately falling unconscious and drifting to his mindscape.
When he came to, Naruto discovered that he was drenched and surrounded by a network of pipes that lead to somewhere. He followed the pipes only to be met with a cage with a slip of paper on the lock with the kanji for 'seal'.
'What are you doing here damn brat,' roared the fearsome Nine-tailed Fox.
'So this is the beast that was sealed inside of me, huh.' thought Naruto. 'Woah, you are the Kyuubi.'
'Damn right I am. Now free me from my prison.'
'No! Why would I do that? You'd just kill me.' replied Naruto.
'Don't worry, I'll make your death as painless as possible.' retorted the Kyuubi, waving his tails ferally.
'Kurama, it's been a long time!' said a figure hidden in the shadows, 'I haven't seen you since the day you were born.'
'Father?' replied a hesitant Kyuubi.
'Yes, it is me Kurama.' answered the figure.
'I'm sorry but who are you?' questioned Naruto. The figure stepped out of the shadows and into the light. He had light red hair with two horns protruding from his head. His skin was deathly pale and he was wrapped in a snow white cloak adorned with six magatama on his collar. But his most prominent feature was his eyes. They were completely covered with a metallic blue except the rings that dispersed from the centre, four of which were visible.
'Sorry child, I forgot to introduce myself. I am Hagoromo Otsutsuki, although these days I am commonly referred to as the Sage of the Six Paths.' said the newly named Hagoromo.
'Y-You are the Sage of the Six Paths!' exclaimed an awestruck Naruto, 'I've read a lot about you, all the legends - although their validity is questionable at best. If you are the Sage of the Six Paths then how are you here now, in my mind, or rather why?'
'I am here because you are in need of guidance, young Naruto. You may not be able to feel it now because you are emotionally exhausted but you have a lot of hate and sorrow within you because of what you have experienced; that could lead you down a dark path. Not only that, but you are my descendant via both the Uchiha and the Senju which means you will be very powerful one day. As for how I am here, I am the Sage of the Six Paths. My soul has drifted along the world for countless years and now I am here with you.'
'Oh, alright then.' replied Naruto.
'Now, we have some issues to address. The first is where you are living. You are going to move. This village is not the right place for you. Your parents might have lived here but that doesn't mean you must. So, we are moving to the Uzumaki clan's village: Uzushiogakure, the Whirlpool Village. That is where you will train until you are strong enough.
The second issue is what you just did in the village. You have awakened two of your bloodlines: the Mangekyou Sharingan and the Wood Style. These will have to be nurtured in the future to reach their full potential. You got them from your family. Understood?'
'Yes. Umm … could you tell me who my parents are? You seem to know a lot about them.' asked Naruto.
'Once we get to your new home, I'll tell you all about them. You'll want to be fully aware when I tell you who they were. But for now, I'll let you know they were extremely powerful ninjas. Now sleep, I'll get Kurama to take over and get you to Uzushio whilst you're asleep, OK?'
'OK, jiji!' replied Naruto before disappearing.
'You okay with doing that Kurama?' asked Hagoromo.
'Yeah, it's fine. Can we talk, old man?'
'Yeah, we can talk.'
