A/N Alright, so I've recently discovered the beautiful song, "Lullaby for a Princess", by PonyPhonic. After listening to both the original song and Luna's Reply, I noticed that some of the lyrics would work for Elsa and Anna, so I changed some words and voila! This one-shot came to be. Enjoy!
Cracking open the door, Anna quietly slipped into the room, tears beginning to well up in her eyes as she caught sight of her sister asleep in her bed. Poor Elsa was tossing and turning, obviously in the midst of a horrible nightmare. "Anna, no," she mumbled desperately. "Please, I'm sorry. I never wanted to…No! Anna, no…"
Anna winced, after all, she felt like this was her fault. It had to be, after all she had said earlier. Elsa had been stressed from a hard day of work, but Anna had been gone all day with Kristoff and didn't know the sisters state. A simple request to build a snowman was turned down by an exhausted Elsa who pleaded be able to do it in the morning, after she'd gotten some sleep. Foolishly, though, Anna refused, and a heated argument followed. It ended though when Anna brought up her sisters isolation. Anna claimed that Elsa had never loved her since she didn't even try to make an effort to spend time with her, along with other accusations that all weren't true. Anna, of course, had been too angry at the moment to think what her words meant, so she only huffed and stomped away when Elsa ran to her room with tears in her eyes.
Now though, Anna felt horrible. She had acted like a spoiled brat and majorly hurt Elsa's feelings. She couldn't fall asleep due to guilt, so she decided to check on how her sister was doing. "What did I do, oh what did I do?" she muttered as she walked over to Elsa's bed, carefully trying not to sleep on the icy floor. As soon as there was a pause in Elsa's flailing, Anna sat down on the side of the bed and rested a tender hand on her sister's head. "I'm so sorry, Elsa," she whispered, a tear falling from her eyes down to the blankets, which were already wet and stiff from frost and Elsa's tears. Anna smiled a bit as Elsa relaxed at her touch. A lullaby came to mind, which Anna then proceeded to sing.
How my deeds pain me as the night stretches long.
How could I have hurt you this way?
So rest easy now, for I was so wrong;
The guilt of my words is my own.
But into this stillness I'll bring you this song;
With my voice may you find sleep
For your tired eyes, by my lullabies,
May your slumber be sweet and deep,
Anna brought her knees up on the bed and wrapped her arms around them, resting her head on top as she thought back to her childhood.
Once did a Princess, so oft' filled with joy,
Look upon her sister's closed door.
Saddened, she cried, "will you ever come out
And build a snowman with me anymore?"
So great was her pain, so massive her sadness,
She failed to see what mattered most,
That the one who hid from her was keeping her safe,
From a horrible fate set in permanent cold.
Lullay, dear Elsa, good night sister mine.
Rest now in dreamland's embrace.
May this cool lullaby reach you in dreams,
And ease you your passage of days.
May my apologies find you this night,
And may my sorrow in kind.
Elsa, you loved me much more than I knew,
Forgive me for being so blind!
Anna's eyes began to well up again as she thought of the enormous sacrifices her sister had made.
What her sister did was what was demanded
In order to protect everyone.
Breaking her family, she locked self away,
And began her life of isolation.
Such is the weight of the crown that you wear, sister,
Duties you always uphold;
May you forgive me that foolishness mine,
And live on with no burden upon your soul.
Lullay, dear Elsa, good night sister mine.
Rest now in dreamland's embrace.
May this cool lullaby reach you in dreams,
And ease you your passage of days.
May my apologies find you this night,
And may my sorrow in kind.
Elsa, you loved me much more than I knew,
May troubles be far from your mind,
And forgive me for being so blind!
Anna could barely finish the last line through her sobs. She was so, so mad at herself for hurting Elsa the way she had, and wished with all her heart that she could take it back. Elsa had done everything for her, and yet she had the nerve to act the way she did. "I'm so stupid!" she muttered angrily.
"I forgive you, Anna." The princess startled when she felt a hand on her shoulder. Lifting her head, Anna saw Elsa watching her with a smile on her face and tears in her eyes. Anna turned and embraced her sister tightly, sobbing onto her neck and not being able to speak through her tears. "There, there," Elsa soothed, "it's alright."
"No it's not," Anna shot back. "Not when you have a spoiled brat for a sister that's more worried about fun than the well-being of her family!"
Elsa only chuckled slightly and squeezed Anna tighter. "You're not a spoiled brat. Trust me, I've met quite a few and you're nothing like them. You're my sweet little sister, my sunshine, who'd do anything for me, even give her life, even if I don't think I deserve it."
"Of course you deserve it! You're the best big sister ever!" Anna drew back and wiped her eyes. "Did you really mean all that?"
Elsa nodded. "After all you've given me, you wanting to build a snowman is more than reasonable." She smiled and opened her arms to Anna invitingly. Anna embraces her again, and Elsa rested the princess' head against her shoulder as she began to rock her back and forth. She had heard Anna's entire song, and wanted to finish it.
The years now before us, bright as the morning sun.
I never imagined we'd face them both as one.
May these happy seasons never end, I pray.
I loved you, I missed you, and now I'm here to stay.
May all your dreams be sweet tonight,
Safe upon your bed below the lights.
And know not of heartache, fear, nor gloom.
And when daylight comes, I'll be here, always with you.
Sleep…
Sleep…
Sleep…
Seeing the younger girl was now sleeping peacefully, Elsa smiled again laid back down on her pillow's, Anna's still cradled against her neck. "Goodnight, my sunshine," Elsa whispered as she closed her eyes.
