Mina Ashido had been acting off the past week. She hadn't been feeling too well either. Every time she tried reading a book, the words and symbols she had once read with clarity had lost all focus from her perspective. She could barely make out any of her classmates' facial features unless they were a considerable distance from her, ruining any chances of socialising with them. She had to squint her eyes when it came out to arranging her wardrobe, brushing her teeth or carrying out any daily chore. Sure enough, Recovery Girl would diagnose her with farsightedness and suggest that she wear reading glasses.
Although the appointment was on a Friday evening, Mina didn't start wearing the glasses until the next day. As she was about to head out to town in the afternoon, she bumped into Izuku Midoriya. Now was a good time to put them on.
'Hello, green blob that I somehow recognise!' she blurted out, unaware of who was in front of her.
'Er…, hello?' he simply said. 'Are you OK, Ashido?'
'Yes, just excuse me for a second,' she said, reaching for her bag. Before he knew it, she was already bespectacled.
'That's better,' she muttered to herself. 'Why hello, Midoriya. Sorry for my behaviour. Just thought I knew you from somewhere.'
'We literally live in the same building, how you could not… are you wearing glasses?'
'What does it look like to you? Just so you know, they're not real.'
Overwhelmed by his sense of disbelief, Midoriya attempted to take Mina's glasses off or at least try to poke an eye.
'Hands off!' she said, slapping his hand away. 'When I say they're fake, that means they're fake. Do I look like I'm lying?'
'With the way you acted… I suppose.'
'Hmmm, what makes you say that?'
'Probably the way you got all defensive there. Like you didn't want me to find out the truth.'
'Damn, I almost got away.'
Feeling defeated and hoping he'd be none the wiser, Mina began to walk away and headed for the door.
'Got away from what?' he asked.
She turned back around, staying put.
'Look, this was supposed to be a surprise,' she sighed, taking them off. 'Recovery Girl told me that my eyesight hadn't been looking too well recently, I could no longer see anything up close, so she gave me these. Like I said, no one was supposed to find out until Monday.'
'If that's the case, then sorry for ruining the surprise,' said Midoriya, bowing in apology.
'Then again, you do look like the type of person who can keep a secret. I'm still anticipating the look on Iida's face when he sees them wearing those babies.'
'Are you sure he's not around? He could walk up to us anytime.'
'No he's not. Tell you what, since you're the first one to see me in this state, I might as well stuff them on your face. I'm in a good mood after all. Should remind you that you might get a little headache.'
And so, Mina took off the glasses and placed them on Midoriya's face. Her first thought was 'Well, now he looks like a proper geek.'
'How do I look?' he asked.
'Eh… slightly less plain than Ojiro, that's all I can say. These glasses really do emphasise your eyes, they look even greener.'
'Really? I thought they just made the eyes look smaller.'
'No, I'm not kidding. See for yourself.'
Midoriya whipped out his phone and glanced at his reflection. Mina's glasses really did bring out his eyes.
'Wow, you're right,' he said out of amazement.
'I know I am,' she said, smugly smirking. 'Now can I have my specs back?'
He handed them back to her and she promptly put them on.
'Well, are my eyes more expressive now?' she asked.
He was too wowed by Mina's combination of her glasses and raccoon eyes to even say anything.
'I take it that would be a yes,' she said.
'Well, what I-'
'Don't bother. These glasses make my eyes cooler, that's what you're gonna say. Now I've got someone waiting for me, see you later.'
'But you didn't even let…'
And she was gone. She was gone before he knew it. At least now, he knew that Iida would be glad he wasn't the only bespectacled kid in the class.
