Young Justice Elementary
The story starts right after Karen changed the DNA of her daughter and the Duncans are still at Ivy University Hospital. Warning: there is description of an gynecology exam.
Ch. 1 Mother and Child
Karen slept on the hospital bed with little Rhea asleep on her chest. She dreamed of flying with her beautiful daughter as small as bumblebees in a meadow full of vivacious flowers. With their shared ability to shrink they could ride on hummingbirds and play inside flowers. The world was theirs to protect while in a miniature form or their biological form.
She heard Malcom's voice in the distance calling her as she sat in a pink chrysanthemum with her daughter.
"Karen? Baby wake up. Karen…"
Karen opened her eyes and Malcom was standing over her with his hand stroking her soft dark hair.
Karen let out a soft comforted sigh before looking down at their daughter on her chest.
"I didn't want to wake you, but the cardiologist is here and wants to look at Rhea."
Karen looked up at the aged man with a scraggly gray beard and Melissa, the female medical assistant who assisted Karen with closing the hole in Rhea's heart.
Melissa rolled in a small examination bed with the ultrasound equipment.
Karen gingerly lifted her daughter and let Malcom put Rhea on the bed.
While the cardiologist set up the mechanics for the ultrasound, Melissa had Karen get into a gown for her post birth examination.
Karen laid back and put her legs into the stirrups. She breathed calm and controlled breaths as Melissa inserted the plastic speculum into her vagina.
While Melissa checked Karen's uterus with a probing light she said, "You had me concerned with how much time you spent inside your daughter after patching her heart."
"Nothing to be worried about. I was just bonding with my daughter in an immersive way."
"If that's what you say," Melissa said looking up and meeting eyes with Karen over her knees.
"So, what's the report Doc?" Karen asked with her hands folded under her head.
"You're healing up just fine though, I would advise you to stay here a few more days."
Karen was half listening to Melissa's evaluation and watching Mal talk baby talk to little Rhea while the cardiologist ran the sonography transducer over Rhea's chest. Rhea was babbling and moving her fingers slightly.
A few moments later the cardiologist cleared his throat and said "That's fine work done on the aorta. I have every reason to believe she's got a great, healthy life ahead of her. She too will be well enough to leave in a few days, though I recommend a follow up appointment three months from now."
The cardiologist handed the baby to Mal.
"Daddy's little princess is gonna have a great future. Isn't she?" he said to the cooing infant playfully.
"Let me hold her Mal," Karen said to him with her hands lifted.
He gave her the baby, who put her little hands on Karen's neck and rested her head on her chest. Rhea began to fall asleep on her mama's chest and yawn.
"Mama's baby knows the heartbeat of her mama. It helps her sleep," Karen said stroking the newborn's hair and giving her a soft kiss on the head.
The day Karen and Rhea were released from the hospital, Malcom arranged for Rocket and Iris to decorate the house welcoming the both home.
When they came home a large, pink "welcome home sign" hanging over the kitchen. Iris and Rocket sat at the kitchen table with a cake and spread arranged on the table.
"You guys are too sweet!" Karen said stepping into the kitchen with her daughter.
"Girl of course! We had to; you know we superhero moms got to help each other."
"Rhea and the babies need a community of their own, it's a long journey growing up a metahuman, "Karen said.
"I knew it! You did something to Rhea's DNA!"
"Not now Malcom," Karen laughed.
Iris and Rocket cut the cake and prepared plates for Karen and Malcom. When they were done preparing the food, the four of them sat with their children.
"You know, You guys gave me an idea; we aren't the only supermoms out there and what about the next generation of Young Justice? What we need is a school starting as a early training program that helps our children reign in their powers while their fine motors are developing."
"You just gave birth and then operated on Rhea right after that. Now you want to start a school?" Malcom asked with shock.
Not right away just as soon as I start to get the hang of being a mother.
"Girl you never stop working," Rocket chuckled.
"Can't stop, won't stop" Karen said before taking a bite of chocolate cake.
Rhea slept in her feeding chair, she had no idea the great plans that awaited her.
