Erin could remember it all like it was yesterday. The way she felt when the plus sign appeared on the tiny stick, her husband's face when she showed it to him, the excitement they felt about finally starting a family of their own. And now here was the roadblock in front of them that they never saw coming, and she came in the form of a four year old little girl named Ella Halstead.
Erin laid in bed, curled against her pillow as she aimlessly scrolled through her phone. She had been fighting morning sickness for the better part of the weekend and Jay had run out to get more bread and crackers. She frowned as her scrolling was abruptly interrupted by an unknown number. She watched the phone ring for a moment before she decided to pick up the call.
"This is Erin Halstead."
"Er, babe, I'm home." Jay called out as he walked through the front door. "I got bread, crackers, some—" he stopped when he saw Erin sitting at the kitchen table.
"Hey, you must be feeling better."
"I just got off the phone...with child protective services."
Jay frowned in confusion; he couldn't follow where this was going. "Okay, is there a new case or something?"
Erin scoffed at his response. If she had a shoe to take off and throw at him, she would've done it.
"Are you kidding me?"
Jay could feel his wife's anger rising but had no idea where it was coming from "Babe, I don't even know what you're talking ab—"
"Your daughter, Jay. The little girl you abandoned four years ago. That's what I'm talking about." Erin scoffed as she got up and stormed into their room, slamming the door behind her.
Jay banged his hand against the table in anger. He was baffled, angry, and confused. Erin had just dropped a bomb on him and he had no idea what to do with it. There was no way he could've fathered a child, he thought, but why and how would child protective services have gotten in touch with him if he hadn't? Before he could get completely lost in his thoughts, he heard Erin coming down the stairs. He sighed with relief and got up to meet her, but his relief quickly faded when he saw her headed to the door, two bags in hand.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm going to Kim's, I need some time to think."
Jay quickly moved in front of her to block the doorway, "Think about what? You haven't even let me talk."
"What is there to talk about? You had a kid, and not only did you completely abandon it, but you never thought to tell me about it."
"Er, I didn't know I had a kid!"
Erin made a move for the doorknob and Jay quickly slid in front of it. "Damnit Erin, will you please just listen to me?!"
Erin bit down on her lip as she felt the tears sting the corners of her eyes. She didn't want to hear Jay's lies or excuses. She didn't want to have to think about how she was probably going to end up a single mother herself. She didn't want to think about how the man she fell in love with had been lying to and keeping secrets from her. She looked away, unable to meet Jay's gaze.
"Erin, please just talk to me." He went to brush the tear that fell down her cheek and she quickly swatted his hand away.
"Let me go. Now." Erin's voice cracked, her heart breaking with every second she stood in front of him. "Let me go, Jay!"
When Jay didn't budge she moved him aside herself, picking up her bags and unlocking the door, leaving Jay standing alone and in shock.
