Chapter 1: Letters
To all outward appearances, the residents of Number 4 Privet Drive looked very normal, but the Dursley's had a secret that they didn't want to get out. There's a wizard and witch in the house, the wizard was currently awake in the cellar. But Robert Potter only knew it as his bedroom, it's been his for years, ever since his Aunt and Uncle realized two children couldn't live in a cupboard. Well, it wasn't entirely his, he did have to share with his twin sister Harriet (she prefered to be called Harry). Currently he sat with his back against a concrete wall book in his lap as he pass the time until he needed to get up. Harry currently had her head placed on his lap using him a pillow, because the Dursley's saw no need to give them a pillow.
Currently Robert traced the old paper with finger as he read. The book was old, older than him, but it was still his favorite. He was torn from his book by a rapping sound on the door and Petunia's shrill voice came through the door, "GET UP!" she said shrilley. Harry groaned and began her morning wake up ritual, which happened to be lay around until Petunia dragged her out of bed. Robert groaned and got off the bed, much to Harry's disappointment as she lost her pillow. He opened the old wooden wardrobe and pulled out the cleanest and best fitting clothes he owned, Petunia would have a fit if he wore dirty clothes on her precious Dudley's birthday. After he dressed he looked into the cracked mirror and frowned, his best clothes were still dirty and about 3 sizes too large.
He turned and headed towards the stairs that lead out of the cellar, "Hurry up Harry or Petunia will have a fit," Robert called as he climbed the stairs, Harry groaned and made a rude hand gesture at him. Robert chuckled before exiting the cellar and entered the kitchen, moving to the stove to help cook breakfast. A few minutes later Harry stumbled in still bleary eyed and helped Robert at the stove. Vernon Dursley then entered the room, he took a glance at Harry and Robert and shouted, "Comb your hair!" as way of greeting.
Robert ignored the walrus-man and continued cooking the bacon, trying to resist the urge to undercook it drastically. Dudley entered the room right as the twins finished cooking breakfast. Robert took the plates over to the table and then faced his greatest challenge of the day, where to put the food when there were so many presents? After finding a place to set the food down he turned to go help Harry with the dishes when Dudley decided to have a screaming fit.
"36! LAST YEAR I GOT 37!" Dudley screamed. Harry rolled her eyes, Robert though was fuming. 'The brat got 36 presents, yet we barely get acknowledged,' Robert thought before turning toward the dishes, set on ignoring the Dursley's.
Robert hated it living with the Dursleys, being made a slave to their whims, while their son got spoiled. Vernon was harsh on them punishing them for the slightest mistake, or even the smallest question. Rule number one to life at the Dursley's was 'Don't ask questions,' The rule was hard to follow in Robert's opinion. He was naturally curious, and always had a question to ask. Robert had long since given up considering them relatives in anyway. The worst punishments Vernon Dursley gave his niece and nephew was when something weird happened around them, like when the glass disappeared next to Harry at the zoo later that day.
Robert liked to think he was perfectly normal, thank you very much. But he could never ignore the strange occurrences that happened around him and Harry, like the time Harry ended up on the roof of the school, or the time when Dudley and his gang were beating up Robert in the school library books flew off the shelves and attacked the bully's. These strange occurrences always plagued Robert, he didn't like not knowing why he was followed by weird events. It didn't help that the Dursley's always blamed Robert and Harry for everything. Robert hated the Dursley's and their unfair punishments, over time he became quieter in order to escape the Dursley's notice. Robert had learned that if the Dursley's paid attention to you it was NEVER a good thing.
One day over summer vacation some letters appeared addressed to Robert and Harriet, Vernon threw a fit and refused to let them read their letters. After a week of letter after letter Vernon's patience ran out and he led the entire family across the country trying to lose the sender of letters. This led to where Robert currently found himself, huddled next to Harry under a thin moth-eaten blanket on the cold floor of a hut on a rock.
Robert kept his eyes shut, drowning out all the noise that invaded his ears desperately trying to get some sleep. His attempts were interrupted however when Harry elbowed him in the back. Robert rolled over to face her.
"What?" he growled.
"Took you long enough to notice," Harry grinned. "I kept whispering your name but you didn't notice."
"Well, it's …" Robert glanced at his old tarnished watch that he found and repaired, "almost midnight, so as any normal human would, I was trying to get some sleep,"
"It's almost midnight, you know what that means," Harry whispered excitedly.
Robert raised his eyebrow, "That it's almost Wednesday, July 31st, 1991?"
Harry rolled her eyes, "It's almost our birthday!" excitement brimming in her green eyes. For the most part Robert and Harry look similar, similar skin tones and hair colors. The main difference between the two is their eyes, Harry had green eyes and Robert had hazel eyes, but possibly the most startling difference between the two is that Harriet has a mysterious lightning bolt scar on her forehead.
It was Robert's turn to roll his eyes now, he had long since forgotten the allure of birthdays. He understood Dudley's excitement, but when you never get anything except maybe an old sock you forget why you ever looked forward to such a day. Robert then noticed that Harry drew a cake with 11 candles on it in the dirt, the cake read "Happy Birthday Harry and Robert!" Robert gave Harry a small smile, appreciating the sentiment.
Harry then began counting down the seconds, and as they reached 0 there was a great and mighty 'BOOM', Dudley awoke with a start, "where's the canon?" he asked stupidly. A second later and another 'BOOM' followed by Vernon running into the room holding a rifle. With a final 'BOOM' the door to the hut was smashed clean off its hinges. Standing in the doorway was a massive figure, outlined menacing against the stormy night. The figure stepped into the hut revealing a very wild and tangled beard, though the massive beard and hair Robert could see beady black eyes.
Then the figure spoke, "Sorry 'bout that," he said in a kind voice. Robert could only blink at the figure, he expected a more menacing voice for the man in front of them. The figure stepped into the hut and lifted the door and placed it back in the frame. "Couldn't make us a cup o'tea, could yeh? It's not been an easy journey ..." then without another word he walked to where Dudley was sitting on the couch, "Budge up, yeh great lump," He said, Dudley shaking with fear ran and hit his fat bottom behind his skinny mother. Then the strange man turned toward the two eleven year olds, "An' here's Harriet and Robert!" The giant said beaming at the twins. "Last time I saw you two, yous was only a baby, Yeh look like your mum Harriet, but yeh got yer dad's hair, but you Robert look like an exact copy of yer dad."
After the Giant finished talking, and silence fell for moment. During that silence Robert didn't dare speak, instead he examined the strange man. He had a wild tangled beard, a large moleskin coat that appeared to be made of nothing but pockets, and towered above everyone in the room. But despite his outward menacing appearance he seemed to be a nice person, but Robert shouldn't make any assumptions just yet he doesn't even know this man's name. Vernon was the first one to break the silence, "I demand you leave at once, you're breaking and entering," he shouted with as much bravery as he has neck.
The man got up and marched over to Vernon, whose bravery left him, now cowering away from the giant, "Shut Dursley, yeh great prune" Then he grabbed the barrel of the rifle Vernon held and twisted it into a pretzel. "Anyway- happy birthday yeh two" He said smiling at Harry and Robert again. Then he reached into one of his many pockets and pulled out a slightly squashed box. "I might have sat on it at some point, but it should taste fine." Harry took the box from the man and opened it, Robert glanced over her shoulder. There was a cake inside the box with 'Happy Birthday!' written in icing.
"Thank You!" Harry said, excitement layering her voice.
Finally Robert gave into his suspicions and asked a question he really wanted answered, "Excuse me, but who are you?"
Harry elbowed him in his ribs, "Rude" she whispered.
"I'm the rude one?! He broke down the door and I'M the rude one?" Robert whispered-yelled back.
The giant man chuckled, "True I haven't introduced myself, Rubeus Hagrid keeper o'keys and grounds at Hogwarts, you know all 'bout Hogwarts o'course,"
"No I don't, sorry," "Hogwarts, is that a disease?" Harry and Robert said at once. Hagrid looked torn between amused and angry, eventually he decided on angry and turned his attention back to the Dursley's.
"DURSLEY, YER TELLING ME THEY DON'T KNOW!?" Hagrid shouted.
"Know what?" Robert asked before Vernon could speak. Hagrid began muttering to himself and pulling on his beard, finally the giant man calmed down and turned toward the two skinning eleven year olds.
"Yer, a wizard. And yer a witch."
"What?" Harry asked confused.
"You have to be joking," Robert stated, as it was the only explanation to him.
"No, I'm not!" Hagrid said shocked that anyone would think he was joking, "Anyway it's about time yeh read yer letters," He then pulled to letters out of his pocket and handed them to the twins. Robert read the address on the envelope.
'Mr R. Potter
The Cellar
4 Privet Drive Little Whinging Surrey'
Without waiting for another moment Robert tore his letter open, it read:
'HOGWARTS SCHOOL OF WITCHCRAFT AND WIZARDRY

As he looked at the letter he simply had one question, "What the bloody hell is a Mugwump?"
Harry snorted at his comment, "Really that's your first question,"
Hagrid laughed, "I'll answer all your questions tomorrow, now let's get some sleep."
Robert laid down on the floor in front of the fire next to Harry his mind reeling from all the information he received this evening.
* This letter is copy and pasted from chapter four 'The Keeper of Keys' from 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'.
Authors Note: Welcome to my new story that may or may not be abandoned and deleted within the next few months, or I see this to the bitter end, who knows?Just as a FYI the next chapter will skip Diagon Alley because I find the chapter tedious to read and write, if anything important happens during the shopping trip you will be informed via flashback. Thanks for reading and please leave a review if you care enough, and if you see ways I could improve I would love to hear it. Till next time my friends.
