I'm a healthcare worker, and at this present moment I'm working working working as hard as possible to get people to distance from one another for the safety and health of our whole world. I'm scared for myself, my family, and my friends. I constantly feel like it's going to be me and only me that will spread the infection to the ones I love-I had to take a quick break, step back, and write something to get my mind off of the severity of our situation. So here's a cute story of little Scorpius learning about what social distancing is.
Draco removed the hood of his cloak, pulled the cloth covering his nose and mouth away from his face. He slipped his hands out of his gloves. Taking a deep breath, he set the empty potion bottles down on the hallway table as he cast a cleaning spell over the items he'd discarded from his body. At least she'd been awake enough to take her potions. He'd just come out of Astoria's room after delivering her the potions to help with her raging fever. He was worried about her. She'd become weaker and more fatigued lately, and finally a minor infection had wracked her immune system and reduced her to lying in her room alone. She needed to stay alone. As hard as it was for Draco to admit, it was the most necessary thing for her so she wouldn't get any worse—
"Daddy?"
A small voice asked from way down near the ground. Draco glanced down to see his little son looking up at him with big eyes. "Why is Mummy in the sick room?" he went on. They'd begun calling it 'the sick room' as soon as Scorpius could talk to make a clear distinction of when mummy was ill and when she was well. Draco sighed. "She's just not feeling well right now, baby." he explained cautiously to his four-year-old. "She needs her rest and then she'll be back to playing in the garden with you soon."
"May I go see her? Just for a hug? Hugs make me feel better, can it make her feel better too?"
"I'm sorry, Scorpius. She needs to stay by herself so that no germs touch her."
Draco began walking from the room with the glass bottles in hand—ready to wash them in preparation for another batch in about four hours. Scorpius held onto his robe and trotted up beside him. "But Daddy, I'm not sick." he reasoned. "I can't give her any germs, I'm not sick." Draco stopped walking. What a hard lesson to have to teach your little child. He bent down and stroked Scorpius's cheek. "I know, baby. But it's not about you or me. It's about her. We need to give her space just to be sure that she's at her safest. It isn't our fault, but it means life and death to her." he explained. Scorpius's eyes clouded a bit. He cast them downward. Was that too harsh? Draco gave him a kiss on his forehead—he felt terrible about revealing the harsh truth, but how else could he explain it? "Why do you get to go in?" Scorpius squeaked. He was clearly feeling that there was some injustice here in the fact that he'd seen Draco go in and out of the room, but yet he was being restricted. Draco let him hold one of the glass vials. "Because I bring Mummy her medicine. Before I go in, I use a special spell to take away all the germs that I can. That's why I wear a hood and mask—I don't want any of the germs sneaking inside the room with me."
He reached out and tickled Scorpius, causing the boy to giggle at the fact that something as small as a germ could "sneak" and tickle him. "Someday when you grow up, you can become a Healer and you can be the one taking care of people like Mummy. Would you like that?" Draco asked gently. Scorpius nodded vigorously, energized by this inclusion. Draco smiled proudly. "Excellent. So you just watch me and how I do it for now, and then someday you'll do it better than I ever could."
So Scorpius eagerly watched as Draco went in and out of the room all day, donning his cloak and mask and gloves and removing them afterwards while casting a special spell. It was enchanting—Scorpius could tell (without knowing it of course) just how much his father loved his mother. How much he cared for her. Something in the boy's heart sparked an interest in sharing that same kind of nurturing spirit towards someone. After watching his father all day and into the night, he decided that it was his time to put what he'd learned into action. Scorpius clamored out of his 'big boy bed' after being tucked in. He grabbed his scarf out of his closet, pulled a jumper off his chair. He slipped on his mittens from winter. Bundles of clothing in hand, he crept down the hallway to Mummy's Sick Room. In front of the door, he tilted his chin up just like Daddy, pulled his jumper on, wiggled his fingers in his mittens, wrapped his scarf around and around and around and around his face several times so that only his eyes peeked out above it, and finally he threw his blankie over the top of his head. Perfect. Mummy would be safe from the germs now. Scorpius twisted the doorknob (it was a little slippery with his mittens on) and let himself into the room.
It was cold inside. Mummy's bed felt far away, but he persisted and made his way towards it calmly just like how Daddy walked. "Mummy I'm here," he said into the darkness. "And no germs sneaked in because I dressed like Daddy." He heard a shivery breath aspire, followed by a barking cough. Mummy was sitting up! "I'm here, Mummy." he repeated. Astoria seemed bewildered for a moment, but after squinting through the darkness and recognizing her son had wrapped himself up to some and see her and was waddling towards her like a marshmallow with legs, she let out a quiet, congested giggle. "Baby!" she cooed. Scorpius climbed up onto her bed. "I'm going to be a Healer someday, Mummy, and take care of people just like you. Daddy said so. I'm in training." he explained. Again, Astoria giggled. It lead her towards another coughing fit, but Scorpius believed that holding her hand through it made it much better. His Healer powers were working already. Mummy couldn't really talk much, but she did hold him and stroke his hair. It was becoming so comfortable, so warm… Scorpius could feel his eyes closing. He'd always found it easier to fall asleep when Mummy or Daddy were there beside him… Just as his little eyes closed and his heartbeat relaxed, Astoria whispered a wheezy compliment to him in his ear with a kiss. "Thank you for being my Healer, Scorpius. I love you."
