The Ultimate Detective and The Ultimate Hope Gaiden: Kiki's Bet

"Alright, that's everything!"

Makoto sighed as he looked around the room, spotting Komaru putting away the last of his and Kyoko's books from her last moving box. Makoto wiped the sweat off his brow; it took another couple of weeks, but Makoto and Kyoko had finally finished unpacking their belongings from their apartment.

Boy, how did we manage to cram so much stuff into that apartment in the first place? Kyoko was right; there's no way we could have continued to give Kiki a good home in that apartment!

Makoto thought back to a month and a half ago when he and Kyoko finally bid a fond farewell to the apartment they had lived in since their engagement. After a brief spat during Kyoko's pregnancy, they had come to an agreement to move to her deceased grandfather's mansion at the beginning of the year. Even now, nearly two months after having moved out, He still fell into occasional bouts of melancholy, missing their old apartment.

There's no question that this is the house we need, even if I still feel out of place in it…even if I still miss our cozy apartment…

Makoto's saddened monologue was interrupted by a soft cooing noise in front of him. Lifting his head up, he saw his infant daughter, the colors of her green and purple eyes reflected off of the bubbles of saliva forming around her lips. Holding her by her arms was his beloved wife Kyoko, peering from behind Kiki's head, her soft lavender eyes glowing as warmly as the loving smile on her lips. Seeing his daughter squirm and reach out for her father, Makoto smiled and reached for his daughter, easing Kiki out of her mother's grip as he cradled her in his own, cooing at her in response.

"Hey, Kiki! Were you having fun with Mama?"

Kyoko answered "I was just feeding her when she started squirming and said Dada."

"Dada! Dada!"

Kyoko's smile suddenly turned to a frown as she continued "It would seem our daughter has good intuition, or at least good timing…you seemed a little down." Touching his cheek with her palm, Kyoko asked "Makoto, is something wrong?"

Blushing in embarrassment at the fact that his wife had caught him in one of his less than chipper moments, Makoto shook his head and assured her "Just…thinking back to our old apartment is all…I'm fine though, honey."

Not quite convinced, Kyoko reached for his other cheek with the corresponding palm, cradling his face as she asked "Are you sure, sweetie? It's not healthy to keep dwelling on the past. If this is becoming a problem, I can always call Hajime and set up some counseling…"

Shaking his head, Makoto assured her "Kyoko, I promise, I don't need therapy. I just…I'm not used to actually living here yet, you know? It's gonna take time before this place completely feels like home to me. Hopefully that'll happen while I'm preparing for Kiki's birthday party. Besides…" Makoto leaned down to nuzzle his daughter's nose as he cooed "Holding you is already cheering Dada up! Who's Dada's little girl?"

Kiki giggled, reaching skyward before squealing "Dada! Dada!"

Kyoko smiled again as Kiki cooed, letting the subject drop before turning to her sister-in-law and asking "So how's the unpacking going?"

Smiling, Komaru turned around and nodded, informing her "It's good; Makoto and I just about finished with the last boxes. You guys are officially all moved in!"

Kyoko nodded in gratitude as Makoto turned to his sister and announced "Great! No rest for the weary though; I still need to prepare for our little ball of sunshine's birthday party!" After hearing Kiki yawn, Makoto amended "…Make that our little ball of twilight. I suppose it is time for your nap. Come on, honey; let's put her down in her crib."

As Makoto walked to their bedroom, Kyoko followed her husband, with Komaru following them both.

Fifteen minutes later, Makoto set Kiki down in her crib, her eyes mostly closed as she now sat in a set of footie-hoodie pajamas. Makoto and Komaru leaned over opposite sides of the crib, quietly cooing at the almost-sleeping toddler, while Kyoko smiled in amusement at their antics.

Eventually though, she tugged them gently by their collars, forcing them back as she advised "As adorable as this is, maybe we should give Kiki some space and let her sleep."

Nodding, Makoto agreed "Y…yeah. I'm getting hungry anyway, so how about I make us some lunch?" Seeing Kyoko nod, Makoto quietly called out "Komaru, come on."

Sighing, Komaru whined softly "Aww, but she looks so cute! I wanna watch her fall asleep. Hey, Makoto, I wonder how she'll fall asleep?"

"Hmm…" Makoto cradled his chin in his palm, thinking before musing "I guess…on her belly, maybe?"

Smirking, Kyoko interjected "Is that because that was how you slept in all of your baby pictures?"

Blushing in embarrassment, Makoto nodded "Y…yeah…" Shaking the blush away, he asked "What about you, Kyoko? How do you think Kiki will fall asleep?"

Taking a similar thinking pose to her husband, Kyoko hummed before deciding "Well…she is my daughter…so in the interest of making a unique guess, I'll say…her right side."

Smiling, Makoto replied "Yeah…you do favor sleeping on your right side when we go to sleep."

Seeing her bother and sister-in-law stare lovingly at each other, Komaru interjected "Well…since she's my niece, and I slept on my left side as a baby, I'll go with that. Hey, I've got an idea! How about a friendly wager? Loser pays 10,000 yen to the winner?"

"You wanna bet on how my daughter falls asleep?"

Makoto raised his eyebrow, not exactly objecting to the idea, just surprised that his sister would be the one to suggest it. As Headmaster, he and Kyoko had many students in their office in the past, having to deal with the fallout of countless juvenile bets gone awry. Some had even been based around their private life; whether they kissed on campus, when Makoto would finally man up and give the Vice-Headmistress a baby, etc.

Surprisingly, Makoto shrugged and conceded "I don't see any particular harm in it. Sure, why not?"

As Makoto and Komaru dug out their wallets and put them on the nearby dresser, Kyoko just stood there, aghast at what was going on, chiding "Makoto, are you seriously gambling on our daughter?"

Makoto turned to look at her with a reassuring smile as he replied "Kyoko, it'll be fine. A few years from now, we'll be looking back and laughing about how silly this was. Besides, it's not like we're betting with Celeste or anything."

Makoto and Kyoko went silent, memories of their time with the Ultimate Gambler at Hope's Peak Academy flooding their minds. Celestia Ludenberg had taken many bets throughout their first year of Hope's Peak Academy, managing to win every single one, even against the resident Ultimate Lucky Students. Makoto had quickly learned never to play her in a game of chance, and Kyoko, already not an easily trusting person, saw through her polite mask for the deceitful shark she was, and refused to play any games with her that involved bets.

Though half of those times, I had more bad luck than good luck…Makoto reflected as he shook the memories away. Turning to his wife, he asked "So whadda ya say, Kyoko? Care to join us?"

"…" Kyoko sighed, digging her own wallet out and placing it on the dresser, conceding "Just this once."

The three Naegis then peered over different sides of the crib, watching Kiki for any change of movement. Minutes slowly passed, seeming to drag on for hours until finally they heard snoring coming from the crib. Peering closer in, they saw Kiki deep in slumber, still sitting in her upright position as she snored.

"…Well…I guess none of us win…"

Huffing, Kyoko concluded "Well, that was a giant waste of time."

Patting her on the back, Makoto objected "Oh come on, honey, it wasn't that bad. Look on the bright side; We still got to watch Kiki fall asleep, and that's worth a heck of a lot more than any bet."

Kyoko smiled, a peaceful moment passing between husband and wife…before it was ruined by the growling of Makoto's stomach. Kyoko and Komaru giggled while Makoto blushed in embarrassment.

Both women moved to either side of the young man, playfully patting his belly as Komaru teased "Looks like someone's tummy is as ravenous as ever!"

"K…Komaru!"

Giggling softly, Kyoko urged "Makoto, why don't you and Komaru go and get lunch ready? We should still have leftovers in the fridge. I'll come join you once I reposition Kiki; sleeping while sitting can't be good for her."

Nodding, Makoto agreed "Sure, come on Komaru."

As Komaru followed her brother out of sight, Kyoko bent over to gently slide Kiki onto her back, kissing her nose before bringing the hoodie over her head with one hand while using the other to cover her body with the blanket.

"Sleep tight, Kiki. Mama loves you!" Kyoko cooed, making Kiki yawn before falling back into slumber.

Smiling warmly at her daughter, Kyoko forced herself away, activating the baby monitor before walking away to rendezvous with her husband and sister-in-law. Nobody noticed when, after she left, an ethereal being appeared, their victorious smile etched into their face as they reached into the wallets, taking out a single note from each of them.

Giggling, the specter chided smugly "Never try and make a bet while the Ultimate Gambler is watching. I'll take my earnings now."

The ghost laughed as she walked out of the room, each step causing them and the money in their hands to disappear from the human plane.

Kiki yawned, her eyes fluttering awake as the snaps of cameras rang through her ears, all three adults smiling as they lowered their cameras. Once putting his back in his pocket, Makoto reached into the crib, sliding her out from her blanket and up into his arms.

"Hey, Kiki! Did you have a god nap?" Kiki only yawned, making Makoto chuckle "Still not quite awake yet, huh?"

"WHAT THE?"

Makoto turned his head at Komaru's shriek. The young woman was frantically looking through her wallet.

"Komaru, what's…"

"My money's gone! I had an extra 10,000 yen to cover the bet in case I lost! Now it's gone; all I have left is enough to gas up my car!"

Kyoko sifted through her wallet, scanning its contents before concluding "Me too."

As Kyoko began searching her husband's wallet, he groaned "Let me guess…"

"…You too…" his wife confirmed.

"WE'VE BEEN ROBBED!" Komaru screeched. "They broke in and took our money while we weren't looking!"

Shaking her head Kyoko refuted "No; Kiki was sleeping in the same room, and I had the baby monitor with me. If someone had forced their way in, I would have seen it."

"Then how did we just become 30,000 yen poorer?" Komaru questioned. "Money doesn't just disappear for no reason!"

Makoto's eyes lit up in realization before he rested his chin in his palm, musing "What if it wasn't stolen? What if…it was claimed by a secret participant in our bet?"

Komaru looked at her brother incredulously, asking "But who would want to insert themselves in a private bet that was just between the three of us?"

Following her husband's line of thinking, Kyoko turned to look at her husband as he turned to look at her, the spouses deducing simultaneously "Celeste."

"…You mean that classmate of yours who was executed during the first Killing Game?"

Nodding, Makoto smiled nostalgically and answered his sister "Yeah…she always did like to take part in bets…mostly because she'd always win."

Nodding, Kyoko confirmed "That's right; it's why I never accepted a bet with her when she was still alive."

Before anyone could say anything further, Kiki started to squirm in her father's grasp, exclaiming "Mama! Mama!"

Smiling, Kyoko reached for her daughter, exclaiming "Oh; you're hungry, Kiki?" when she tried to grasp at her clothed breast.

As Kyoko unbuttoned her blouse so Kiki could drink from her exposed nipple, Makoto gathered up the wallets and handed them to their owners, pocketing his own as he suggested "Here; best to keep a better eye on our wallets in case Celeste tries to collect any more winnings."

Nodding as she awkwardly pocketed her own wallet, Kyoko cooed "Come on, Kiki! Let's go to the living room and we can read a book when you're done."

Kiki cooed in satisfaction as her mother walked out of the bedroom, Makoto and Komaru following close behind to take part in the family activity.
