Prologue
Flashes of fangs and silver had her cowering in the corner. She was hurt and unable to get away. Tears streaked her face. She knew that this was the end for her. It was going to kill her. And no one would remember her or know what happened to her. The monster started towards her. She closed her eyes unwilling to see what would happen to her next.
She awoke with a loud gasp. Her sheets drenched in her sweat. Dragging in long breaths of fresh air. She turned her head to the left to see her alarm clock, the red LED light read out two a.m. She sighed. She knew that she wouldn't be getting any more sleep tonight. The nightmares would never let her.
She sat up and immediately rubbed her head. The headaches were a normal occurrence, often assaulting her after her nightmares and sometimes hitting her out of the blue.
Addy had been to countless doctors about them and all the doctors had given her the same answer. Nothing was wrong at least not physically. So, she sought out a therapists help, in hopes that it was psychological.
The therapist said that she gave all the indicators of someone who had been through a very traumatic experience. He also said that whatever that trauma was, it was also likely the source behind her headaches and nightmares.
There was just one problem.
Addy couldn't remember if she'd been through any extremely traumatic events, or at least not so traumatic that it could give her PTSD.
She remembered that her parents had divorced, but it had been rather amicable, both parties deciding to stay friends. Her step mother was great and had been a more like a fairy godmother than anything else and her mom's boyfriend was quiet, but good to her mom and her siblings.
She'd been through break ups and had pets die, but while they were sad, she simply couldn't remember having been through any of the violence and horror that she saw in her nightmares.
She ran a hand over her face, ruminating over it wasn't going to change things. She decided she might as well get up and do something productive before she'd start her daily tasks of getting ready for work. Friday's were always busy at the bed and breakfast where she worked. Lots of couples coming in from one of the bigger cities to enjoy each other in the peace and quiet of Fort Nyd, with it's view of the river and the mountain ranges, whilst also being a mere half hour journey from it's big city neighbour, Va River.
She moved to her lounge and set herself up on her couch. She decided to put on a cheesy rom-com, make a hot chocolate, and settle down to make some progress with her crochet.
Doing crochet, did make her feel like she was far older than her twenty-eight years, but she found it very calming and relaxing. It allowed her to unwind from her nightmares. She let out another sigh and immediately scowled. She didn't need to sigh every five seconds as if she was trapped.
Nadine was right. She was spending way too many nights alone. What she needed was to go out and have some fun.
"Alright." She said to herself, "Tomorrow, if Nadine is going out, you're going with her. Final."
She held a small measure of hope that by getting plastered she might be able to get one night of sleep that wasn't laced with nightmares of metallic eyes and blood and screams.
