"Hello there! Welcome to the world of Pokémon!" said the voice of Professor Acacia, the local professor, "My name is Isabelle Acacia! People affectionately refer to me as the Pokémon Professor!"
I yawned loudly and smacked my lips. I felt very lazy today. I didn't want to get out of bed, so instead, I reached for the volume knob on my radio and turned it up to listen.
"This world is inhabited by creatures called Pokémon. For some people, Pokémon are friends or pets. Others use them to battle competitively," said Acacia, "As for me, I study Pokémon as a profession. My area of expertise is in Pokémon abilities."
"Adelaide!" called my Dad's voice.
Ugh… He knows I hate my full name. Because I was feeling lazy, I ignored him and tried to go back to sleep while still listening to the radio broadcast.
"It's a beautiful day here in the Puerto Region. And since it's now officially Spring, I'm doing my annual broadcast orientation to welcome any twelve-year-olds interested in becoming Pokémon trainers," said Acacia, "All you have to do is come by my lab in Nortemais and I'll let you choose your very first Pokémon."
"Adelaide! Up and at 'em!" called my father again.
Now he's just doing it because he knows I hate it. My Dad is great, but he knows how to push my buttons better than anyone.
"For those of you listening who weren't born here In Puerto," said Acacia, "Our region is below the equator, even further south than Alola. As such, ice type Pokémon can only be found high on the great Mt. Aconjaro."
My Dad was knocking on my bedroom door now.
"Addie?" he asked gently, without opening the door, "Rise and shine, birthday girl. Get out of bed, I've got big plans."
Alright, I guess I should probably get up. I thought that I would feel more excited. Today is the day I leave on my Pokémon journey. Maybe the realization hasn't fully sunk in yet? I yawned loudly again.
"There she is." said my Dad.
I pulled the covers down to my feet and sat upright. I swung my legs over the side of the bed and lowered myself down onto the ladder. I sleep in a bunk bed on the top layer. My older brother, André, used to sleep on the bottom, but he left home eight years ago on a Pokémon journey. Last I heard from him, he was travel ling through the Hoenn Region.
When André left, my Dad offered to get me a new non bunk bed, but I really like the bunk bed. Because I'm near the windows of the room, I can put all kinds of stuff in the little alcoves; like my radio.
I climbed down and touched my bare foot to the floor of my room. I knew I would need to take a shower before I left, but I didn't have to take one right now. I was curious to see what my Dad had in store for me on my twelfth birthday. So, I grabbed my bathrobe and pulled it over my pyjamas.
"Welcome to the land of the living." said my Dad as I walked down the hallway and into the living room/kitchen.
"Morning." I said to him.
"Why so glum?" he asked, "There's no crying allowed on your birthday. Unless they're tears of joy."
"I'm not glum," I sighed and yawned, "I'm just tired. Didn't sleep too well."
"Not surprising," said my Dad, "Big day today."
"You said you had big plans?" I asked with a grin.
"I made you your favourite for breakfast," he said, "AND… I bought you a present that I'm sure will come in handy during your journey. Which do you want first?"
"Breakfast please." I said.
My Dad escorted me to the table and had me sit down. Then he left me there to go get the food from the kitchen. Dad was always the cook in the family, and his food is incredible. I'll definitely miss his cooking when I'm gone.
Dad came back with a plateful of my absolute favourite breakfast food. Bacon french toast pancakes. I know it probably sounds disgusting, but the way my Dad makes them is delicious. The meaty flavour of the bacon mixes together with the sweetness of the syrup to create a beautiful new flavour. I made sure to eat slowly to savour every bite.
"Oh my god," I murmured as I took a big bite, "Dad, this is AMAZING!"
"Well, get your fill," he said, "Today's a big day. I already called Professor Acacia and told her to expect you today."
"I didn't know I was supposed to call her." I said.
"You don't have to," said my Dad, "I just wanted to make sure she would still have Pokémon for you to choose from when you get there."
"Dad, I don't need one of her Pokémon to become a trainer," I said, "I can always just buy a few Poké Balls and see what I can catch."
"Yes," said my Dad, "The professor told me the same thing when I called her. But she also said that she was only expecting two trainers today. I guess not many kids are old enough today."
"You know, me calling the professor to reserve a Pokémon for you was supposed to be your birthday present," he continued, "But after hearing what you and Acacia had to say, and realizing that that's a pretty lame present, I decided to get you this instead."
He pulled a large, skinny, rectangular object out of the cabinet above the stove. It's a brilliant hiding place for presents because even now, at twelve, I'm too short to reach it. I watched my Dad as he brought the gift over to the table as I took the last few bites of my breakfast.
"Ooh! What is it!? What is it!?" I squealed excitedly, wiping my mouth with a napkin.
"Silly girl… I'm not going to tell you," said my Dad, "That would defeat the purpose of it being a present."
He handed me the present and I used my nails to rip open the wrapping paper. Underneath it was what looked like a much larger version of my smartphone. It was about ten inches tall, seven inches wide and less than an inch deep. And the entire thing seemed to be one big screen.
"Dad…" I gasped, "What is this?"
"It's called a PokéPad," said my Dad, "I might not work for Megacorp anymore, but I do still have friends that do. And one of them was nice enough to send me that."
"It's amazing," I said "But what does it do?"
"That's up to you," he said, "Just like how you can download apps for your phone, you can also download apps for this thing, except Megacorp is designing special apps that are targeted towards Pokémon trainers."
"Cool." I said, examining the tablet curiously.
"That thing won't be released to stores for another month," said my Dad, "But most of the apps will already be available. There's a map with full GPS functions, a scanner that can find hidden items, it works as a phone, you can access your Pokémon storage remotely from anywhere, and Professor Acacia will even give you a Pokédex app when you meet her."
"All that in this little thing?" I asked.
"Nothing but the best for my little girl." said my Dad.
I stood up and ran over to him, jumping into his arms.
"Thank you, Daddy. I love it," I said quietly in his ear, "But I'm not a little girl anymore."
"You'll always be my little girl, no matter how old you are." he said, putting me down.
I picked up the PokéPad and then something occurred to me.
"How am I supposed to carry this thing around?" I asked, "It's huge!"
"Fold it in half," said my Dad, "See on the back there? There's a hinge."
I found it and pulled the latch to unlock it and then folded the left side over until it closed on the right side. The pad was now half the size and looked similar to a skinny closed book.
"Cool." I said.
"It's 10:30," said my Dad, "You should probably get in the shower. Oh! And before you leave, I want you to clean your room one last time."
"No problem," I said, "It'll be easier to find what I need to pack while I'm cleaning."
When I finished my shower, it was 10:40. By the time my hair was dry, it was 10:50 and ny the time I was dressed, it was 11:00. Now it was time to pack for my journey, I needed to pack lightly, but efficiently.
Like my Dad had requested, I cleaned while I packed. I was bringing a pink and black camping backpack, but my sleeping bag already took up a lot of room. Eventually with some manipulation, I managed to fit everything except the PokéPad in my bag.
I looked around and nodded with satisfaction at my now spick and span room. I expected to struggle with the backpack, but it turned out to be lighter than I anticipated.
My outfit for my journey needs to be comfortable and practical. Puerto is a very hot and humid place, but it gets colder as you ascend Mt. Anconjaro. In preparation, I packed a spare pair of Capri jeans that were warmer, but I was wearing jean shorts. For my shirt, I need something that breathes, so I went with a warm hoodie as my spare but was currently wearing a pink halter top and a cute red shrug jacket.
For the final touches on my outfit I laced up my black converse shoes with pink laces and put a white bucket hat on my head to protect my head from the sun. I also made sure to bring some hair ties in case I ever want to put my light brown hair in a ponytail.
I walked out into the hallway and saw my Dad crying while holding our framed picture of my Mom close to his chest.
"Hey!" I said, walking over him, "What happened to no crying allowed?"
"I meant you're not allowed to cry." he said, his voice breaking.
"What's wrong?" I asked, rubbing his back affectionately.
"I just wish your mother was here to see you," he said, hiccuping, "She would be so proud of you."
"She is proud Dad," I said, "When she died, you told me that she would always be watching over us from Heaven."
I threw my arms around him for a big hug. After a while, he stopped crying and took a deep calming breath.
"Sorry," he said, "Sometimes I just miss her so much. At least she got to see André when he left on his journey."
"Yeah." I said.
"Now hold still," he said, pulling out his phone, "I want a picture before you leave for Nortemais."
"Do I have to?" I sighed, "You know I hate getting my picture taken."
"I also know you hate to be called Adelaide," he said with a grin, "But if you don't hold still, I will say it… A lot."
"Fine." I sighed.
I moved over to the door and slid my backpack onto my shoulders. I thought about which Pokémon I would choose when I got to Professor Acacia's lab, the excitement and anticipation brought a smile to my face.
"Say cheese!" said my Dad.
I rolled my eyes.
"Cheese." I said unenthusiastically.
He put the phone away and pulled out his wallet.
"Here," he said, taking out a few bills and coins, "Use it to get supplies when you reach Nortemais."
"Thanks." I said.
"Ready to go?" he asked, pulling the door open.
"Yeah, but I'm a little nervous." I said.
"Get going, the Professor is waiting on you," said my Dad, "But don't be a stranger. Call me from time to time so I can hear your voice and see what sort of Pokémon you've caught."
"I'll miss you Dad," I said, stepping outside, "And I'll call you after I get my first Pokémon."
"Looking forward to it," he said, gradually pulling the door closed, "Have fun and make me… and your Mom proud."
I nodded at him as he closed the door. I took a deep breath and let out a sigh. The weather outside was delightful. I grabbed my bike from the side of the house and sat on it, carefully to make sure I could still balance with my backpack on.
"Easy peasy," I said to myself, "Puerto Region, here I come!"
In Puerto, the names of all the towns and cities are based on Portuguese, the secondary language in the region. I don't speak it myself, but even people that don't all know what each of the city names mean in English.
For example, Inicio, my hometown, means "first" or "primary". And the town I'm heading to, Nortemais, means "north most" in Portuguese. The whole region is a peninsula south of the equator. To reach Nortemais, all I do is follow Route 1.
I was pedaling at a leisurely pace, enjoying the fresh air and beautiful weather. After about 20 minutes, according to the clock app on my PokéPad, I heard shouting from somewhere farther up the road.
"Go Axel!" called a boy's voice, "Use quick attack!"
I pedaled faster, following the voice until I found the source. On the side of the road, in a clearing near some bushes, was a boy. He looked to be about my age. He was commanding his Pokémon in battle. I looked at it and recognized it; it was an Axelot.
AXELOT, THE REPTILE POKÉMON. AXELOT HAS UNSTABLE DNA, WHICH ALLOWS IT TO EVOLVE INTO ONE OF EIGHT DIFFERENT POKÉMON. THE TYPE OF POKÉMON AXELOT WILL EVOLVE INTO DEPENDS ON WHAT ITEM AXELOT IS HOLDING WHEN IT EVOLVES. IT HAS A VERY MALLEABLE TAIL THAT CAN STRETCH LIKE ELASTIC.
The boy was wearing grey shorts that went down just below his knees, blue and white cowboy boots, a black beanie that covered his long, messy blonde hair, a light blue t-shirt and black finger less gloves. He was commanding his Axelot in battle against two wild Pigamis, one of which was already out cold.
PIGAMI, THE SMALL RODENT POKÉMON. PIGAMI ARE VERY SOCIAL AND ARE KNOWN FOR THEIR EXCELLENT TEAM WORK IN BUILDING SHELTERS, OR GATHERING FOOD. IT'S LARGE TEETH ARE STRONG ENOUGH TO CRUNCH ROCKS.
I sat on my bike, watching the boy and his Axelot.
"We've almost got it, Axel!" he shouted, "Use pound to finish it off!"
The boy's Axelot bounded towards the remaining Pigami and hit it hard with it's skinny limbs. The Pigami tried to bite, but fainted before it could. Just then, I felt something fall on my head, knock my hat to the ground and clamp down hard.
"AAGGHH!" I wailed, "There's something on my head! There's something on my head!"
The boy turned around and saw me. His eyes grew wide as he noticed whatever was clamped onto my head.
"Try and hold still!" he called, running over to me, "There's a Manjaw biting your head!"
MANJAW, THE CAIMAN POKÉMON. MANJAW ARE PREDOMINANTLY AQUATIC, BUT THEY CAN SURVIVE ON LAND INDEFINITELY. THEIR ARMS AND LEGS ARE TOO SMALL FOR SWIMMING, SO THEY HUNT FOR FOOD IN SHALLOW WATER AND MAKE THEIR DENS ALONG THE BANKS OF RIVERS.
"Well get it off!" I shrieked, "It's teeth are digging into my scalp!"
"I've got an idea," said the boy, "Axel, stand on my head and use quick attack to knock Manjaw down!"
I opened my eyes and saw the Axelot scamper up his trainer's body and stop on his head. Axelot must not be very heavy, as the boy had no trouble balancing.
"Go!" he announced.
Axelot dashed forward and collided with the Manjaw. I felt it's teeth on my head tighten and then go away completely as it was knocked down to the ground. I jumped out of the way in the direction of my lost hat. I picked it up and put it back on.
"Axel, finish off Manjaw with a headbutt!" called the boy.
Axelot delivered a mighty slam to the downed Manjaw, and then returned to stand close to his trainer.
"Great job!" called the boy.
He pulled out a Poké Ball from his pocket, pressed the button to make it full size and then threw it hard at the KO'd Manjaw. The ball bounced off and opened as Manjaw transformed into red light and was swallowed by the ball.
"Nice one." I said to him.
The Poké Ball fell to the ground and rolled back and forth a few times until it eventually stopped. The boy ran over to pick it up with a big grin on his face.
"Alright!" he exclaimed delightedly, "I caught a Manjaw!"
He put the Poké Ball away in his pocket and then held out his hand.
"My name's Carlos," he said, "Are you a rookie trainer?"
"I'm Addie," I said, shaking his hand, "Technically I need a Pokémon to be called a trainer, but yes, I am a rookie."
"Ah, I see," said Carlos, "That must mean you're headed for Nortemais."
"Yes."
"You're in luck," said Carlos, "That's where I live. We can head there together, but first, I'm starving, do you want some lunch?"
I was a little taken back. I had been expecting to do most of my journey alone.
"Um… Sure." I said with a warm smile.
But what's a journey without friends to share it with?
"My Mom is an amazing cook," said Carlos, "And she taught me how to make all kinds of things."
He reached into his backpack and pulled out two bags with a sandwich in each one. He handed me one of the bags with a smile and then sat down on the ground cross legged.
I opened the bag and pulled out the sandwich. I smelled it curiously just as my stomach growled. As much as I love bacon french toast pancakes, they aren't very filling. I took a bite of the sandwich and was struck with a wave of flavour.
"Mm…" I moaned, while sitting down to join Carlos, "This is delicious. What kind of meat is it?"
"Plumee," he said, "My family has a huge Plumee ranch near Lestemais."
"I've never eaten Plumee before," I said, taking another big bite, "Is their meat naturally so moist and salty?"
"Salty, yes," he said, "Moist, no. That's one of my Mom's secrets."
"Wow," I said, shoving the rest of the sandwich in my mouth, "This is SO good!"
Carlos smiled at me.
"You're good company," said Carlos, "Ready to hit the road?"
"Sure." I said with a smile.
Carlos picked up his bike from the ground and mounted it. I walked over to mine and walked it over to where he was.
"Nortemais, here we come," he said, "Follow me, Addie."
We pedaled together, riding with purpose down Route 1 for about another hour. As we biked along the path, Carlos and I were exchanging stories. He told me about how his older sister was a Pokémon nurse and how his older brother was a Pokémon watcher.
"There's so much potential out there," he said, "I don't know what I want to do with my life, but I do know that I love Pokémon and want to do something that involves them."
"You're young," I said, "There's plenty of time for you to make up your mind."
"What about you, Addie?" he asked.
"Me?" I said, "I want to explore the world with Pokémon by my side; battle the strongest trainers and search for the rarest Pokémon."
"See?" asked Carlos, "You already have a goal."
"Only because that's what my brother did," I said, "As soon as he explained to me what he wanted to do, I realized that I wanted to do the same thing when I was old enough."
"And now you are." said Carlos.
"And now I am." I said.
After another hour, we finally arrived in Nortemais.
"Here we are," said Carlos, "Home sweet home."
I was in awe at what I saw. Compared to Inicio, Nortemais was huge. Carlos noticed me and giggled quietly to himself.
"This is huge!" I gasped.
"Nortemais is like the fifth smallest town in Puerto. If this is what you think of Nortemais, I can't wait to see what you think of the full sized cities." he said.
"Okay, which way is the lab?" I asked.
"Straight down this road here," said Carlos, "At the end, hang a right. It's a huge building, you can't miss it."
"You're not coming with me?" I asked.
"I already have my starter," he said, pointing to Axelot, who was perched on his head, "Besides, I should check in on my Mom. We'll meet up later."
"Okay." I said.
I followed his instructions and sure enough, before too long, I could see the large laboratory looming in the distance. As I pedaled over to it, someone on a skateboard zipped past me, almost crashing into me.
"Move it or lose it!" jeered the rider.
It was a girl with a very snobby attitude. I glared at her and seethed momentarily before I resumed pedaling towards the laboratory. As I got closer, I could see Professor Acacia standing just outside the main door, waving at me. I've never met her in person, but I do know what she looks like because I've seen her on TV.
"Are you Adelaide?" she called as I parked my bike.
"Addie, please." I said, "But yes, that's me."
"Come on in and meet the Pokémon," said Acacia, "I have them set up over here in a playpen."
"Why in a playpen?" I asked.
"So trainers can go inside and meet them, of course," said Acacia, leading me inside, "I was only expecting two trainers today and you showed up at the same time."
"I came here by myself." I said, a little confused.
"So you don't know the other girl that's already in there?"
"No." I said.
"Well, that doesn't matter now," said Acacia, "Follow me to the playpen. The Pokémon will be looking forward to meeting you."
She led down a hall and then around a corner into a large room that had a small baby gate set up. We could easily step over it, but the Pokémon weren't big enough to climb or jump over it yet.
"There they are, Addie," said Acacia, indicating the three Pokémon, "There's Eleplant, the grass type elephant. There's Calflame, the fire type calf Pokémon and Rainling, the water type duckling Pokémon."
I jogged over to them and stepped over the gate. Once on the other side, I sat down crossed legged and waited to see what the Pokémon would do.
"Hello there," I said to them, "My name is Addie."
"They can't understand you." sneered a familiar voice.
I looked up and saw the same girl that almost knocked me off my bike on my way here.
"You," I said to her, "You must be the other trainer the professor was talking about. And I think they do understand me."
"Hmph." she said, sticking her nose up at me.
"Nice to meet you too." I said, returning to the Pokémon.
I hadn't noticed that while I was talking with the girl, Eleplant had come up to me and was now using his trunk to curiously smell me. Eleplant was a pale green elephant with leaves for ears and what looked like a small shrub for a tail.
"You are so cute!" I said, reaching out for his trunk.
Upon seeing this, Eleplant took his trunk and wrapped it around my hand, then used it to make my hand move up and down. He was shaking hands, or at least my hand with me.
"Do you want to be my friend?" I asked.
Eleplant trumpeted in excitement and agreement.
"Come here," I said, picking him up, "Let's go tell Professor Acacia."
