Prologue: I Choose You!
"Breathe Amelia, breathe. Inhale, exhale," she commanded herself as she stood in front of Professor Oak's Ranch and Laboratory. She was thirty minutes early, but this was one of the most important moments in her young life. She had been studying for most of her life for the sole purpose of becoming a Pokémon Trainer, and this one small decision will influence everything on her journey. She would be choosing her partner, her best friend, and her very first Pokémon, and she didn't want to mess up.
In truth, despite all the rigorous studying she has done, she still couldn't choose between the three Pokémon, Bulbasaur, the Grass-type, Charmander, the Fire-type, and last but not least, Squirtle, the Water-type.
Logically, Squirtle would be the best choice. It is a known fact that the Pewter City Gym Leader is a Rock/Ground-type Trainer, and Water Pokémon has a type advantage against Rock/Ground types, but she had learned a long time ago that Pokémon aren't just supposed to be used for battling, but to also build unbreakable bonds of friendship between Trainer and Pokémon, which gave Bulbasaur and Charmander a fighting chance. She was aware of being able to capture the other two starters in the wild, but she wanted to make the correct choice in following both her heart and mind, which led Amelia to picking Squirtle.
Squirtle was a Water-type Pokémon, easily fitting her calm, but still fierce when needed personality, and as mentioned before, the type advantages were too much to ignore.
After resolving her inner debate, she found herself able to move again and walked inside. Once inside, she was met with the familiar sight of the assistants running about, and the overwhelming smell of sterile.
She made her way up the stairs and through hallways to Professor Oak's office. Once at the door, she knocked twice out of pure habit and after a few minutes of waiting, she allowed herself in.
Amelia examined her surroundings, first taking note of the Professor's absence. Next, she noticed a long table with various types of gimmicky gadgets and tools scattered about on it. She was about to step towards it to take a better look until something else caught her eye. It was a semi-circular incubator with see-through glass. Inside were three PokéBalls, each with a different symbol inscribed on them. One had a small flame, symbolizing Fire, another one had a picture of a wave, representing Water, and the last one had a picture of a green leaf, symbolizing Grass.
'These must be the starter Pokémon.' Amelia deduced. Upon hearing the door creak open, she turned around and saw Professor Oak standing in the doorway and shot him a small smile and wave.
"Amelia! Are you here to choose your starter? You're mighty early you know." Professor Oak commented, walking up to her side.
"Yeah, I wanted to get here early so I could get the Pokémon I wanted first," she said, trying to keep her face completely neutral.
"Ok, then Amelia. Which Pokémon do you choose to become your partner?" Professor Oak asked as he opened the incubator.
Amelia immediately reached out towards the Wave marked PokéBall and grasped it in her hands. Weirdly, she could somehow feel the aura the Squirtle was giving off, and this Pokémon certainly was excited to have a new Trainer, and she would certainly greatly exceed Squirtle's expectations.
