A/N: Hello! I needed something wholesome and sweet! So i wrote this! Please enjoy! I think this pair needs more love!
Homonyms, Mochi, and Starry Skies
As a first year,it was so natural to have feelings for Midoriya. He was always working so hard. He was cute, and his body was of course aesthetically pleasing. Even the other girls noticed Ochaco's tendency to daydream in Midoriya's direction. They'd make comments, joke with one another. Aoyama and Mina had started whispering about pretend wedding plans and green floaty children in her future.
But something changed. As year two progressed, her feelings for Midoriya changed. She felt so concerned for him before. He was always sacrificing himself, getting himself into danger, and never left a fight without some sort of injury. Of course she and Iida were always there to make sure he was bandaged up and looked after.
Midoriya was just fading away. He was single minded. Always training with either Bakugou, All Might, or both. She tried to fill the time with her own training. She also socialized with the girls. But there came a sort of attention that she would crave, one she didn't know or understand.
That's when the tone of her mental life changed. Ochaco couldn't focus in her room. Ashido was particularly loud with a few other members of the class; Kirishima, Kaminari, Hagakure, Ojiro, Sero, and Sato. From what she could make out through their shouts, they were playing some sort of video game or board game that Kaminari clearly didn't know all the rules to. Ochaco didn't understand why they were acting this way. Their exams were in two weeks. She really needed to buckle down with her studies. She moved down stairs to the common area, which was surprisingly empty.
There she sat on the couch, head deep into her psychology notebook and textbook. Her pencil scribbled wildly as she reviewed, circled, and answered sample test question that the text provided. Every note card she made floated above her head, rotating as she quizzed herself. Though she had worked so hard and long, she was coming to a stand still. There were so many terms that were so similar sounding! Her head was spinning.
"I'll never get this!" Ochaco groaned as she lay her head down on the book.
At that moment, the doors to the dorm opened. Panting, sweaty, and in a tank top and shorts, Iida walked in. He wiped off the condensation from his glasses on the hem of his shirt before noticing his friend on the couch.
"Greetings, Uraraka!"
"Hi Iida," Ochaco spoke through her book. Her note cards continued to float above her head.
Iida frowned and walked over to the couch. "Uraraka, I don't mean to criticize, but it seems as though your current study method is… unorthodox."
"That's because I'm never going to get this. I'm giving up!" Ochaco pressed her fingers together and released all her flying materials to a random part of the floor.
"You can't just give up when things get difficult!" Iida directed his energy waving both hands at her text book.
"You don't understand Iida. You're smart. You've always been smart!"
Ochaco lifted her head from her book. She hadn't realized that in her frustration, tears had crept out of the corner of her eyes onto one of the key vocabulary words in that chapter. She groaned and smacked the book with closed fists. "I can't even give up on this right!"
Iida's eyes softened. He slowly moved around the couch and took a seat beside Ochaco. "I can tell you are very worried about our upcoming exams. Perhaps the traditional ways of studying are not working for you."
"How else am I supposed to study?"
"Well, I would be happy to assist you."
Ochaco's tears stopped falling as she looked towards Iida. "Really?" She wiped her eyes with her wrists.
"Certainly. It is my duty, not just as class president, but as your friend to help you." He bent over and picked up a few of her note cards. "I need precisely fifteen minutes to clean up after my run. Meet me in my room and I will be happy to assist you."
Ochaco smiled. "Okay. Thanks Iida."
Fifteen minutes later, Ochaco was carrying all her materials to Iida's room. Her eyes were still slightly puffy from crying, and she couldn't help but feel the warmth of embarrassment flood her face. Iida didn't need to take pity on her. He really was a great friend.
She knocked on the door and Iida immediately had the door wide open. "Come on in! Let the studying commence!" He held a dramatic pose as he ushered Ochaco in. It was silly, and unnecessary, yet Ochaco felt that she was finally able to relax.
Ochaco took a seat on Iida's bed while Iida pulled up his desk chair. "So, Uraraka, where would you like to begin?"
That was a daunting question to the brunette. So many terms were spinning in her head. "Uh.. well I could really use some help understanding what the difference is between the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system. They both seem to work the same parts of the body."
Iida stroked an imaginary chin as he listened. "I can see how the autonomic system can be very confusing. I like to think of the two parts as opposites. The sympathetic nervous system is the one in charge of making sure people's bodies are prepared for a dangerous situation. Their pupils dilate. Their fight or flight response is activated. Their heart rate goes up, hormones are pumped through the body, and more blood is sent to large muscle groups."
Ochaco furiously began writing as much of this explanation down as possible. She circled the key words fight or flight. That should help her recognize it.
"They parasympathetic nervous system," Iida took longer to simplify this explanation. "I think it's the digestion process and the… rest. It is active when there is no danger. No one wants to think about being hungry or having to relieve themselves when there is a villain attack."
He blushed when he said the word relieve. The rosy tint made Ochaco laugh. The session continued with the same positive tone. When an hour was up, Iida closed her books. "Session over."
"Over? I was just understanding this stuff."
"Exactly. We are in a great place to stop for today."
Ochaco could feel her pulse increase. "But I have so much more to learn. An hour isn't enough. Please I will need more help."
"Uraraka," Iida said sternly, "you had been studying much longer than when I came to assist. You will be burned out if you try to cram all the information in at once. Besides, we can meet tomorrow at an earlier time."
"You'll help me tomorrow!" Ochaco was so excited she began to float.
Iida laughed. "Of course. I plan to meet with you everyday until the day of the exam. Let's meet tomorrow in the common area at seven."
Ochaco floated back down. "Sounds like a plan."
That night Ochaco slept with much relief. This is what having smart friends is for. Thank goodness Iida was so willing to assist her.
The next night at seven came. Ochaco made her way downstairs. There was quite a commotion. Many of the girls were setting up for a movie night, while other guys were marching behind Kaminari up to his dorm.
A disheveled Iida was waiting with some study materials. "Uraraka, I fear we will not have a calm place to study this evening."
Ochaco watched as the rest of the class divided into noisy groups. "If Mina is going to the boys side, then you can come to my dorm."
A slight blush scraped at the bottom of Iida's glasses, though he quickly recovered by adjusting his frames and clearing his throat. "If you are comfortable with having me there."
"Of course I'm comfortable with you being in my room, Iida." Ochaco smiled and led him to her room.
The nice part about Ochaco's set up, was that she had a table both of them could sit at. They sat side by side. Together they read over the notes, with Iida assisting in translating the English text now infront of them. Between both, a Japanese to English Dictionary sat between them. Hours passed as they came across difficult words within the translation.
"Is there really a difference between "altogether" and "all together?" Ochaco asked.
Iida furiously flipped through the pages of the dictionary in front of him. "altogether , one word, means entirely. But does placing the all in front of together really change the meaning? It must, why else would there be two words of this?"
"I'm not sure," Ochaco answered with a yamn.
"Keep looking, we must find the answer."
Ochaco nodded and opened up her notebook. Her eyelids felt heavy as she flipped through the pages. She looked at the first page of notes on homonyms. Her blinks slowed and then she turned the page. A second page of notes, and eyes closed. Her head fell to the side. The last thing Ochaco remembered was her head resting against something warm.
"Uraraka, wake up!"
A large hand shook her shoulder. Ochaco opened her eyes. Everything was sideways. She lifted her head up, and immediately blushed. She had fallen asleep on Iida's shoulder. She looked up at him. Iida was also blushing, but had a panicked look to his eyes.
"We fell asleep," Iida informed her. "It's two in the morning. This is way past curfew!" He began grabbing all of his studying materials, and stacking them in his arms.
It took Ochaco a moment to process what was happening. Her entire face flushed. "Oh no! You can't be here! Aizawa will give us detention if he finds out you were here for so long!"
Iida was already at the door. "We will have to re plan what we do tomorrow. The longer I'm here the more trouble we face." He opened the door and peaked out into the hallway. "The coast is clear," he whispered. "I will go now. Good night and sleep well." He closed the door and left.
"Good night, Iida," Ochaco whispered behind him. Now that the adrenaline was settling, she couldn't help but feel… lonely. She turned out the light and crawled into her bed. As her head rested against the pillow, she could not help but notice how cold her pillow felt compared to Iida's shoulder.
Future study sessions had alarms set after that night. Aizawa never found out, but Iida was not one to press his luck. Everyday they got together, and reviewed each concept. Ochaco noticed how much easier everything was becoming. Things that were difficult began to become easier.
On Monday, They had thirty minutes left in the study session by the time they reviewed all their notes.
"Wow! I can't believe how much easier everything is," Ochaco exclaimed.
Iida smiled. "You need to have more confidence in yourself. You are very bright."
Ochaco blushed. "That's very sweet of you to say, Iida." She pressed her fingers together. "We have so much time left. Do you want to just hang out and relax?"
"Capital idea! As studies have shown, relaxing and having shorter daily study sessions before a big test help keep a person calm. What would you like to do?" Iida took off his glasses to clean them on his shirt.
Ochaco's brown eyes darted around the room. She had no idea what she wanted to do. The only thing she knew was that she didn't want Iida to leave. Something about spending the past week with him had made her grow close. She looked forward to her alone time with the eccentric class president. He made her feel more confident. Classes were becoming easier. And as the rest of the class began to panic and begged Momo for tutelage. She and Iida had already established their routine.
Midoriya had checked in on them, to see if they had begun to study. It seemed to be a relief to the green haired boy. He could continue whatever strange study/training sessions he and Bakugou were having with All Might regularly.
Lucky for Ochaco, her stomach managed to make the decision. A low growl caused the room to pause. "Do you think we can go to the school vending machines for a treat?" She asked as she held her stomach.
Iida nodded. "Certainly"
Not too far from the dorm, was an ice cream vending machine. To Ochaco's delight, it was a mochi ice cream vending machine. Her face lit up as soon as the machine came in sight.
"Mochi is my favorite," She said as they got closer to the machine.
Idia inspected the flavors. "What is your favorite flavor?" he asked, as Ochaco spun in excitement behind him."
"I really like teh Strawberry, but I'm pretty happy with any mochi usually."
She took out her wallet and pulled out money. As she approached the machine, she was surprised that Iida was standing in front of her. He had held a pink bag labeled strawberry facing her in his fully extended arm. In his other hand, held close to his mouth, Iida held a green bag labeled green tea. He had already taken a bite of the green treat.
Surprise flushed out her face as she took the strawberry mochi. She reached into her wallet to pull out a smaller bill. "Let me pay you back." Her fingers rummaged through the brown case, only stopping when a larger hand grabbed her wrist.
With a serious look in his face, Iida seemed more determined and calm in this moment than Ochaco had ever seen. "You don't need to pay me back. I wanted to buy it for you."
Perhaps it was the light reflecting off her pink bag, but Ochaco could have sworn there was a light pink hidden underneath iida's glasses. She smiled, not wanting to contest her friend's generosity. "Thank you, Iida."
"It's my pleasure, Uraraka."
The pair walked back to the height alliance dorms, but neither wanted to go back inside quite yet. Treats reaching their end of their existence, they both decided to sit on a bench outside the front entrance.
"You know, Iida. You and I have been friends for quite a while."
"We have," Iida agreed. "It's been almost two years."
"Can you believe all the events we have been through together?"
"It really is quite astonishing."
Ochaco looked up into the starry sky. "We are practically family with how close we have become. I truly can say you are one of my best friends."
This time, the blush was clearly on Iida's face. "You are one of my best friends as well, Uraraka."
"I think we are close enough that we can be first name bases. What do you think?" While continuing to look up at the sky, Ochaco leaned her head over onto Iida's shoulder. She felt the male teen tense up at first, but he quickly relaxed.
"Then call me Tenya, Ochaco."
"I'd like that, Tenya."
They stared at the sky for a good while, then the alarm on Iida's phone went off. They stood up, thanked each other, and went back to their dorm rooms.
Up until the day of the test, the pair started the ritual of studying, getting mochi, and looking at the stars. While others were cramining, they started their review early and spent their evening relaxing and enjoying each other's company.
Ochaco hadn't felt this content in ages. She was way more confident in her studies than she had ever been. Plus she was enjoying all the time she got to spend with Iida… correction, Tenya. She could not explain it, but the more time she spent with him, the more comfortable she became.
It wasn't uncommon that She would rest her head on Tenya's shoulder as they munched on their mochi. They stared at the stars, and to her surprise, Tenya didn't know much about the planets or constellations. Now, the night before exams, Ochaco managed to get Tenya out to the courtyard, to look up at the sky. She brought out a blanket for them to lay on and stare at the sky
"You can see the North Star." Ochaco pointed up to the sky guiding Tenya's eye. His eyes followed her finger. She guided him across the sky. "The big dipper is over there."
"You know so much, Ochaco," Tenya said. "It's so impressive."
Ochaco blushed. "I just really like the starry sky."
"I can tell you like them. Your eyes sparkle like the sky when you are excited."
"Thank you, Tenya."
He chuckled. "It's funny. I never really paused to look at the stars. I never even knew you liked stars. I was too busy working on being a hero."
"I get what you mean. I feel like we have been so focused on our futures, we hadn't spent time getting to know our friends."
They were laying side by side staring up at the sky. Maybe she knew what she was doing, or maybe it was just a pure reaction, but Ochaco lightly guided her hand to rest on top of Tenya's. His hand was so much warmer than hers. She smiled."I'm really glad you offered to help me study, Tenya."
Tenya turned to his side. He lifted himself on one arm. Ochaco turned her head to look into his dreamy blue eyes. There was a softness to them that not even his crisp glasses could withhold. He slowly moved closer. Ochaco was on her side now, and her face was being pulled towards his. As he grew closer, she held her breath.
The moment their lips touched, everything around them stilled. It was soft, and calm. Ochaco felt sparks move across her body. She first tensed at the sensenation, but within a fraction of a second, knew she needed this to continue. Tenya's eyes were closed, and just as Ochaco closed her eyes, he pulled away.
He hopped up to his feet, face flustered and red. "I'm sorry… I went too far."
"Ten…"
But before Ochaco finished saying his name, the boy raced away. Ochaco stared at the cloud of dust left by his departure. Her fingers lightly traced her lips. His absence weighed heavily on her chest. It was so wonderful, and now it's gone.
The next day was the day of the test. There was already a quiet tension that filled the air as Ochaco entered the room. As she walked to her seat behind Tenya, she could see the tension in his face. "Hi, she said as she sat down.
She watched his body recoil. It was a startling jerk. She suddenly felt the same heavy feeling on her chest. She slumped forward in her chair. "Look, about last night. You never-"
"Stop." His voice was cold and calculated. He turned in his seat to look at her in the eyes. "We shouldn't focus on last night. We are about to take our exams. It is unfair for my actions to be a distraction to both of us."
Ochaco sat up a little straighter. "Right," she agreed with a head nod.
"We have worked hard for this moment. A good hero can not let a moment of weakness define their entire self. So, Ochaco, you and I will attack this test head on. We will do great."
A sudden wave of confidence filled her. Ochaco raised a fist in the air. "Yeah! We're going to destroy this test!"
At that moment, Aizawa entered the room carrying a large stack of papers. "I'm glad someone is excited. I just hope the enthusiasm is matched with your score."
Ochaco quickly tucked her head in and blushed over her enthusiasm. She got her pencil box out, and listened to the instructions. She placed her name at the top of the page, took a deep breath, and read the first question.
As students finished, they left the room. Aizawa scored the tests while everyone else continued testing. It was a common practice, but still always left tension to see who would declare themselves completed first. Two hours into the exam, Bakugou stood up and turned in his papers. As soon as he left the room Momo stood and did the same.
Twenty minutes after Momo stood up, Tenya stood. He picked up his belongings and brought his exam to Aizawa. Pchaco watched him as he turned in the paper. She had hoped that he would look at her as he left. Give her a thumbs up, or something. But instead he walked out of the room.
Time went on, and Ochaoc lost track of who had left, and who was still in the room. She felt extreme relief as she finished her last problem. She sighed in relief. This was the best she had ever felt about a test. She grabbed her belongings and walked the test up to Aizawa. He took it, grumbled that scores would be posted in the morning, and then began scoring her tests.
She left the exam room and her heart suddenly sank to her stomach. Now what? What was she supposed to do? The exam was over. Would she still get to spend time with Tenya? He was so matter of fact this morning when talking about the exam. They never even finished talking about last night.
"Last night," Ochaco whispered. Her fingertips again went to her lips. She couldn't let this go.
Somehow Ochaco had made it back to the dorms in record time. Many of her classmates were sitting and discussing the exam in the common room.
"Hey, Ochaco! You're done." Midoriya called and waved to her.
Ochaco looked over the members of her class. Momo, Kirishima, Tsu, Midoriya, Ojiro, Sero, Bakugou, Todoroki, Mineta, and Tokoyami. "Where is Iida?" She asked Midoriya.
"Oh he went up to his room," Midoriya said.
Without a second look at the group Ochaco headed her way up to the class presidents room. She was now more determined than ever. She was also sure of one thing, he was avoiding her. He was afraid of the interaction they would have after the exam. Ochaco knew what she had to do. A fire glistened in her eye as she pounded on his door.
Her fist stopped when she saw the light reflect off of his glasses. A sullen look on his face as Tenya opened his door. "Ochaco. How was you're-"
She didn't let him finish. Instead Ochaco jumped up, wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled the class president in for a very long, passionate kiss. Her finger tips activated, and her body began to float with excitement. Though at first he was caught off guard, Tenya bent into the kiss. Hsi arms wrapped around her waist, and a smile crept across his lips. The gravity of the situation now lifted, as they both leaned in for an even deeper moment.
When they eventually pulled away, gasping for air. Both were locked in each other's eyes. "I thought I had overstepped my bounds last night," Tenya admitted.
Ochaco giggled. "You never even gave me a chance to respond."
The next day, the pair walked bright and early to class hand in hand. Iida of course needed to be the first to the room, and Ochaco was happy for the time she could spend with her now, boyfriend. The both stared at the exam scores posted on the wall outside the room. Tenya had managed to maintain his class rank of two behind Momo. Ochaco though, increased her rank from thirteen to nine. Both smiled as they walked in the room. Indeed, they had had very successful study sessions.
