It was another night at the Tortuga. Chris and Martin were quiet unusually as the moon rised over the horizon. They sat on the balcony, side by side, one married and the other not.
Martin fixed himself and stared at the moon. Usually he and Chris would chat so much that the gang downstairs would yell at them to shut up. But today was different...
Martin wanted to start the conversation, but didn't look where to start. Finally he said, "You feeling okay, Chris?"
Chris' face in the shadows, though the moon shined into the Tortuga. It wasn't a full moon, only a quarter of it shined. Chris didn't answer the question, but instead shifted himself.
Martin wanted to cheer Chris up and said, "Hey, I'm sorry back there. I should've known not to leave you alone like that."
Chris still didn't answer.
Martin sighed and stood up and said, "Sleep well, Chris," And went to the stairs. The gang was staring at Martin. Aviva said, "It's very unusual for you two not to talk."
Martin crossed his arms, "I like Chris hates me..."
Laura took Martin by his arm, "Don't think that... it wasn't your fault that Chris got bitten by the rattlesnake."
Martin pushed Laura away, "But tripping him like that and not telling him... That rattlesnake almost sucked the life from him..."
Aviva said, "I'm sure Chris will heal before you know it. I think the medicine is probably just hurting his eye right now."
Koki said, "But still, Chris hadn't said one word since he screamed with the rattlesnake on his face..."
Jimmy answered, "Yeah. He was pretty quiet when we treated him. If I had painful medicine put on my eye, I would be screaming."
Aviva sighed, "Martin, it wasn't your fault."
Martin turned towards the balcony. He caught a glimpse of Chris still sitting on the balcony, still as a statue. He said, "I'm tired... I'm going to bed."
Laura raised her hand as Martin went out from the HQ. Aviva touched her sister's shoulder and shook her head, "Let him be for a little bit. But I do need your help to get Chris into bed."
Both girls went upstairs to the balcony. Chris was still sitting in the same spot. His head was not up, with his eyes looking at the stars... Instead, it was hung downwards at his fingers which were fiddling about.
Aviva said quietly, "CK... It's time for bed."
Chris jerked a bit and ignored the girls. Laura stood far in the dark corner feeling guilty. Chris had his face away from the girls as he stood up. Aviva said, "Don't be afraid, Chris. It's not that bad."
Chris ignored her response and went downstairs, hands in his pockets of his shorts. Aviva looked at Laura and they followed him downstairs. Koki and Jimmy knew best not to look at Chris.
Finally, Aviva said, "Chris, please... Look at me... I want to see how your eye is handling."
After a moment of silence, Chris lifted his head. Aviva tried all she could not to be scared of his face. His right eye was red from all the medicine and tears. On his eyebrow down to his top part of his eye was two deep scabs from the two fangs of the rattlesnake. On the bottom part of his eye was the one fang scab. Because the scabs had venom which had to be removed, his eye looked as if someone punched him in the eye and then cut it... cut it enough to see his muscle on his face... with the rattlesnake's fang bites still visable.
Aviva said, "It's looking more better than it was."
Chris turned his face, "You're lying..."
Aviva felt sorry for Chris, "Chris... Martin and you didn't know there was a rattlesnake hiding where you fell. You both got to be careful next time..."
"Shut up..."
Aviva felt horrible. Chris wasn't feeling normal. She thought maybe it was the medicine and asked him to go to bed and get some rest. Chris listened with some regret in his leftover part of his face. He lay on his hammock and felt his whole world shattering. Minutes later the lights went out and the whole Tortuga went to sleep.
By morning, Aviva foudn Chris' hammock empty. She got worried and went up to the balcony. He was indeed standing against the pillar of the Tortuga. His body was crooked. She sighed and said with much cheer as she could mutter, "Good morning, Chris."
When Chris' face met hers... All that was visible to her was the right side which was cut open to flush the venom out of his blood. His muscles were red from blood and his eye was swollen. He still didn't say anything.
Aviva walked up to Chris and said, "How are you feeling?"
Chris didn't answer. His face frowned as he turned away. Aviva wished Chris was married so he could be happy in some way, just to forget his problems...
"I saw what you did to me this morning in the mirror... Why did you tell me that you have to cut my face open?"
Aviva answered, "I did tell you. But you so upset about your eye being sucked by that rattlesnake. I might not told you, but I was scared... I was more concerned of keeping you with us," She turned Chris and rested her hands on his shoulders, "I was more concerned to keep you alive. You were this close to dying."
Chris looked at Aviva, "Now what? Will I ever heal?"
Aviva smiled, "Now you're positive. You will heal. Your face's skin will grow back, but those scabs are going to be scars. Can you see me with your right eye?"
"Yeah..."
"That's good. I was trying to keep your vision, that we have to put you to sleep to cut your skin to drain the vemon. But it does look better than it did yesterday."
"I know you're lying..."
"CK... If I was lying to you, I would not be a true friend to you."
Chris looked at Aviva. His eyes so different. Aviva noticed his right eye was no longer brown... His eye color was different. His left eye was brown and his right eye was blue.
Chris raised an eyebrow, "What's wrong?"
"Your eye color... it's different. You have two different eye colors..."
Chris was almost in panic, "Is that bad?"
Aviva shushed Chris, "No. It's actually a rare sighting. One person of a thousand people could have that change. Actually, you look good with blue eyes. But with brown and blue, you look more... well, charming."
Chris' eyes sparkled. Aviva knew she made his day. She hugged Chris, therefore, making him shocked. Chris sighed and hugged her back, "You really think so?"
"Of course, CK."
Chris rested his head on her shoulder and held her close to him. Aviva felt happy that Chris was now positive of this new change.
Martin came into the HQ. When he saw Chris, his heart thumped harder. Chris looked at Martin and smiled. Martin was shocked, "Chris?"
Chris smiled, "Yeah, bro?"
Martin looked at Aviva, who was putting the first aid kit away. She smiled at Martin and nod her head once. Martin went to Chris and said, "You're in a good mood this morning..." Then he hestitated, knowing he made it worse.
Chris smiled, "Aviva told me that I now have two eye colors."
Martin jumped and looked into Chris' eyes. His jaw dropped, "How? Aviva, how?"
Aviva came over and said, "It's a rare thing for people. I think somebody was supposed to have blue eyes instead of brown eyes."
Chris blushed. Even his right side of his face glowed red. His smile may have hurt him, but he missed to see his friends smile at him. Koki said, "Yeah. Chris does have a rare irises. It's called sectoral heterochromia."
Martin smiled, "Ha! You learn something new everyday!"
Chris' blush was washed away after he calmed himself down. Aviva sat on his chair with him and loved on him. Martin was surprised and smirked at Aviva.
That evening, Chris was in bed early. Martin took Aviva's arm and said, "Someone in love with the sectoral heterochromia brother of mine?"
Aviva smiled, "Martin... Stop. I'm trying to make Chris feel positive about it. He was excited to find out. At least he's got a rare, but exciting thing about him. At least it makes him feel happy."
Martin looked at his brother, who was gently swaying in his green hammock. He smiled to himself, happy that Chris was no longer upset for wht had happened. He turned to Aviva, who too was looking at Chris. She looked up at Martin without shock or fear or even blush and said, "It's getting late. You should be in bed by now, especially with Laura."
Martin laughed, "Fine, Aviva. Sweet dreams."
"You too," She yawned as she went to her hammock. Just before she climbed into her hammock, she recalled what Martin said. She looked at Chris and smiled, "I guess he's right."
She went over to Chris and gently rubbed her hand over his shoulder. Chris shifted in his sleep. His blue eye opened to see her by his side, "Aviva..."
Aviva shushed Chris and said, "It's okay. Go back to sleep, CK."
Chris looked at her with both eyes, "Why did you wake me up?"
"I was just checking on you, CK. You looked - A bit shaken up."
Chris raised an eyebrow, "I was?"
"Sure," She lied. She leaned in and kissed his forehead. Chris' eyes shut in shock as he received the quick response. As Aviva pulled away, she smiled, "You're the best, CK."
Chris smiled, "Thanks, Aviva... Now can I get some sleep?"
Aviva chuckled, "Sure. Sweet dreams."
"Thanks... Good night."
"Good night, CK."
Chris shut his sectoral heterochromia, feeling proud for his new change... He was indeed a special Kratt brother.
