Author's Notes: This is a PokeSpe (Pokemon Special/Pokemon Adventures, the manga) AU story mainly centered around Ambershipping (Gold x Yellow), Luckyshipping (Red x Blue(the girl)), and some Specialshipping (Yellow x Red) initially. This is also based on the personality swap/body swap trope, and I haven't read the manga beyond the GSC arc, so some characters may or may not be OOC. You have been warned. Some recognition to the Ambershipping stories "The Last Place You'd Look," "All That's Visible," and "The Pokemon Special Oak Academy," written by MyCurrentObsession, ItsJustMarty, and Kylix respectively. Alright, now let's actually get started.
Oh before I forget.
Disclaimer: I do NOT own any of the characters used in this story. Okay NOW we can begin. Roll the summary!
Summary: While Yellow is fishing and thinking to herself, she comes across Gold who gives her advice and hatches up a scheme with her. But when Blue catches onto their scheme, she comes up with an idea of her own that causes a whole load of new problems and changes the two's perspectives of each other by a landslide.
Jumping the Gun
It was a cloudy day on the shores of Route 34, right below Goldenrod City. A blonde girl was relaxing next to some rocks as she watched a small pokéball from her fishing rod bob against the ocean's surface, her straw hat on top of her hunched up knees. Things had mostly cleared up since a few years ago, and because she had nothing better to do and didn't want to do Pokemon battling for a hobby like the rest of her friends did, she opted for her favorite pass-time instead; fishing.
Yellow, as the girl was known, twirled some loose strands of her hair as she watched the pokéball bob up and down. It really was quiet and peaceful, just like her time living in the Viridian forest. Nothing could disrupt this moment of peace for her… as she laid her head down, she thought, "Maybe I can take just a small nap… I'll know when I get a catch… just for a few—"
"Yo, Straw Hat!" A voice rang out from behind her and to her left. Shocked awake by this sudden surprise "welcome," she swiftly lifted her upper body and turned to see who or what the sound came from. Next to her stood a young boy she vaguely remembered, with a black and yellow cap folded backwards atop his head, black bangs covering the left side of his face, and a red jacket with tan shorts and tennis shoes. He waved a pool cue over his shoulder as he looked down at the blonde girl next to him, waiting for her response.
"Oh, hey… Gold? Did I get that right…?"
"Hey, so you do remember me, cool. I was afraid with you just gawking at me that you completely forgot my charm."
She just stared at him following his response, trying her best to show him she was unamused without actually frowning. The end result was an awkward stare.
Although he couldn't understand her expression, the silence spoke volumes. "… Okay, fine. Yeah, it's me, Gold. Anyway, what's up, Straw Hat?"
"… Yellow. That's my name…"
"Okay, Yellow then. What's up, Yellow?" He emphasized the correction of her name, like he couldn't be bothered.
"I was just fishing, really…" Until you showed up, anyway.
"Fishing? I mean, not to diss on you or anything, but couldn't you find something better to do? Y'know, like… training with the others? Maybe doing a little… hitting up, if you catch my drift?" He smirked. Yellow was both shocked and disgusted by his implications.
"I… I do not like him that way. Besides, they're all busy anyway, and I don't really like getting my Pokemon hurt either…"
Gold chuckled, seemingly satisfied with the response he got. Maybe he felt victorious over her, given the burning she could feel on her face. Then again, he was second most likely to tease her anyway, next to the brunette Blue.
"You're just being shy, Yellow! I mean, come on, even I could tell, and we've hardly known each other!"
If she wasn't capable of frowning earlier, she sure was now, giving Gold a defeated look. She held this expression for just a bit longer than usual, hoping that maybe it would wash away whatever Gold was trying to say to get onto her case.
"… Even so, Red's too nice. He always hangs out with everyone else. I couldn't ask him to only spend his time with me, it'd be selfish…"
Gold paused, seemingly lost in thought. After a moment, before Yellow was about to speak up again, he placed his fist on top of his open palm dramatically. "I know!" he exclaimed.
"… know what?" Yellow asked, just as confused as ever.
"He's just uncomfortable around you because he knows you're a girl now! So…"
Oh no. She could see where this was going.
"… maybe you should try doing that straw hat thing again. And fix up your shyness, too. I mean, take Silver for example, that dude's got such long hair, I could've sworn he was a girl."
"… Gold, he already knows, remember? What would wearing my hat again do…?"
"… actually, maybe we need a new hat for you. But you didn't hear the second part!"
"Second part? Besides Silver…?" She glanced up at him with a puzzled expression.
"Yeah. We gotta fix up your personality, girl! That shyness act won't get you anywhere with Red!"
She felt offended by his calling her shy, but she decided not to show it. She just continued to look up at him, speechless. "… so…?"
"Here's the plan…"
...
Meanwhile, right across from them in Goldenrod city, Red, Blue, and Green are seen pacing around the city's streets. The girl with long brown hair, Blue, was looking at all the sights with a glint in her eyes. "Oh my gosh, we so have to go to that store! Imagine all the clothes they have."
In response, the lighter-brown haired boy, Green, simply sighed. The boy next to them with spiky black hair and a red cap to match, Red, decided to speak in Green's place. "As much as I wouldn't mind shopping, we came out here to check the radio tower, not shop, Blue…" In response, she just pouted and turned away.
Some distance away, some chattering could be heard.
"Are you sure about this…?" A girl's voice asked.
"Absolutely positively." A boy remarked.
Red raised an eyebrow. "… Hey, doesn't that sound like…?"
Blue answered, "Yes, it's our dear Yellow, and… that boy Gold… what could those two have gotten up to…?" She seemed disappointed, as if just bringing up the boy's name was like casting some ritual for disaster.
"Well, let's go see what they have to say!" Red exclaimed, before walking off in that direction.
"Hey, wait, Red!" Blue rushed to follow after him. Green kept a straight face and sighed again as he trudged along behind them.
…
"They're coming, what do I do…?!" Yellow seemed panicky.
"Just follow the plan, just follow the plan." Gold repeated, trying to reassure her.
Upon walking to the south entrance of Goldenrod City, the two groups finally met up. The gold-eyed boy had the same appearance as usual, though he was missing his cap for some reason and was instead wearing an all-too familiar straw hat. As for Yellow…
She had on Gold's missing cap. His goggles were over her eyes, as she struggled to work up a smug face, holding her fishing rod over her shoulder just like Gold had demonstrated to her.
"… Uh… Yellow…?" Red was the first to speak up, a warranted dumbfound look on his face.
The blonde girl, her long hair tied behind her back and poking out from under the backwards-facing cap she had, hesitated for a moment. After a few moments' pause, she spoke.
"Y… yo, Red, w… what's up, my man…? C-cool weather we got going on here, r… right?" she started, bumping Red with her elbow a couple times.
Everyone's eyes except for Gold's (and Green's) nearly bulged out of their sockets, completely dumbstruck. Their jaws just hung open, as if they were too heavy to lift back up.
"Y-Yellow, you have to… be more confident than that…" The black-haired boy next to Yellow muttered, trying his best to make a higher pitch in his vocal cords. He held down the edges of his straw hat and lowered his gaze, as if trying to hide under the hat.
Everyone was too dumbfounded to give any further reaction to this, but they were surprised beyond belief. Here Gold was being shy and stuttering, and Yellow… well, to her credit, she was trying to be like Gold.
"Oh? Um…" The blonde took a deep breath, then tried again, raising her voice and closing her eyes.
"Welcome to uh, the hip hop station of Goldenrod city, my homies! Starring myself and my partner-in-crime Gold himself! We're bringing you the best beats in all of Johto, so uh, you best be listening up and opening your ears!" She spun the fingers of her right hand as if tuning a record player, pretending to hold a headphone in her left hand whilst keeping her eyes closed, too afraid to look at their reactions.
"Y-yes… um, and today's talk is going to be about, um… Red!" Gold pointed at the spiky-hair boy in front of them, before lowering his eyes in a stereotypical shy manner.
"Uh, yeah! So like, did you hear 'bout that one girl, Yellow? Yeah, you know the one, she got the long blonde hair and… hoo wee, is it just me, or… i-is it… h-h-hot… around… here…?" The blonde stuttered, tugging at her shirt collar and shaking as she forced out those last few words, her face turning bright red.
Beside her, Gold covered his mouth, holding back laughter. Red stared at the both with wide eyes, while Blue looked on amused, and Green didn't care.
"Y-yeah, her, um… s-so did you know that… um… she has like, a mega super crush on—!" Gold started.
Yellow immediately placed both of her hands over Gold's mouth and pulled him away from the group, her face burning red as she muttered to him under her breath, "D-don't say that you idiot!"
"What, weren't we trying to impress Red…?"
"Y-yes, but not like that…!"
"What do you mean, 'not like that?' How else would we… oh fine…" He finished, rolling his eyes with a groan.
The two walked back to the trio, Gold resuming the conversation: "So uh, would you believe it or not, but it looks like our time is up! Sorry for the cliffhanger guys, but y'know, um… we gotta fly!" He then grabs Yellow by the arm and runs off deeper into the city with her shouting, "Wait, Gold!"
…
As Red stands there just blinking his eyes and mouthing out silent nothings like a fish out of water, Blue puts a hand to her chin, thinking. "I see what you're doing, Gold… you know she would never confess to him the way she is, so you're breaking her out of her shell… but I can't allow that. I'm going to get to him first, just you watch!"
She turned to Green, tugging on his arm sleeve. "Hey, could we talk for a bit? Pretty please?"
Green took a moment, considering something, then silently nodded. Red, being left all by himself, finally snapped out of his trance and looked around, realizing everyone was gone. "Wait, huh…? Hey, where'd everyone go?! Hey!"
