FADE IN - BLACK SCREEN - V.O.

This is a street east of downtown Los Angeles. You can get a hit of meth for $2 anywhere in skid row. These 50 blocks are where nearly five thousand men, women and children call home. On this street, on this day about one hundred people can be seen hovered around lit barrels for warmth.

EXT. PARTICULAR STREET - CENTRAL CITY EAST - PARTICULAR BARREL - DAY

About five people have their hands slightly above the barrel flames. We center on a man to the far right that is jumping up and down as he hums. He is old and fits the poster image of the homeless in L.A. county. Clothes are dirty, tattered and do not fit properly. He is unshaven and sometimes remembers his name, Gerald Whitehall.

Not too far away is a car approaching this barrel.

His attention is diverted from the flames, when a stranger stumbles on a man asleep, slumped against the wall behind him. Gerald pokes the sleeping man, who looks his direction without changing his posture or facial expression.

MAN

Don't bother me.

GERALD

(slurred, drunk speech) What time ya have?

MAN

Ten past my freckle or maybe it's a quarter to your dick

and ten minutes from now it'll be even more vague

and ten minutes after that it'll be plain black,

so you don't have to ask me nothin for twenty minutes

and by then, you'll have forgotten the question

Gerald looks after the stranger who stumbled on the man

CUT TO

EXT. CITY STREET - DAY

The people are trying to keep warm around the barrel; the car is still a good distance away

INT. ATOMIC SILVER LEXUS - DAY

Nice pecks, tight abs, and huge, powerful guns are seen on the man behind the wheel. Women would call him handsome, about thirty with wavy sun-streaked, surfer styled hair. The contour of his upper body is easy to see and admire; he's not wearing a shirt. His name is Brett Flynn. His ear plugs are shoving the sounds of Japanese into his inner ear.

ANGLE - CELL PHONE PLUGGED IN - LIT-UP JAPANESE APPLICATION WITH LIGHTS MOVING - DAY

Brett drives quickly, responds to the questions, uses hand gestures and pauses to hear the next question.

VOICE

How do you say, nice to meet you?

BRETT

Konnichiwa! Hajimemashita Aki desu.

VOICE

How do you say Italy sounds exciting!

BRETT

Itariya wa tanoshisou desune!

Brett never stops looking toward the barrel ahead.

EXT PARTICULAR CITY STREET AND BARREL - DAY

Most of the people around the barrel have left, except Gerald and the man semi-asleep behind him.

MAN

Hey, time traveler

GERALD

huh?

MAN

Why ya so interested in time. Gotta be somewhere?

GERALD

(Gerald staggers around) I'm meeting somebody.

MAN

Yeah, on the moon.

Gerald kinda dances and hums around the barrel

EXT SEEDY LOOKING ALLEY - DAY

The atomic silver Lexus slows down about a block from the nearby alley, but no one can hear the Japanese coming from the ear plugs.

VOICE

How do you say I'd like to see you again?

FADE IN CLOSE UP SHOT from Brett's windshield and hearing the Japanese from the ear plugs

Gerald staggers from the alley and after getting his meth fix continues walking back toward the barrel. Brett, in his atomic silver Lexus is watching him exit the alley and walk. The Japanese is blaring in his ears.

VOICE

How do you say I'm pretty busy this week?

Brett stops the application

EXT NEAR BARREL - DAY

Gerald is walking faster and talking to himself in quick bursts of energy. The atomic silver Lexus is very close, edging closer and closer.

ANGLE STANDING OVER MAN SEMI-ASLEEP - DAY

Gerald nearly runs, stops abruptly and starts to tell the man semi-asleep a story very rapidly. He's gasping for air between words. Loses his place in the story and stares directly ahead in a daze.

NEW ANGLE Geralds'S EYES ARE BULGING - DAY

A very wide, modern neck-tie is yanked tightly around Gerald's neck and is pulled tighter and tighter.

NEW ANGLE BRETT'S BROW IS SWEATING - DAY

As Gerald grabs for the tie, then Brett's hands, we see him stop breathing. We now see Brett dropping the necktie and talking soothingly to Gerald, almost lovingly.

BRETT

(In just a moment it'll be over) Imagine that you're flying to mars. Imagine all the stars flying past your eyes.

You're doing fine. Just relax and ease into the journey.

Like it was timed in a play, when Brett finishes his whispering, Gerald slouches over the man semi-asleep, dead.

FADE IN BRETT RUMMAGING - DAY

The semi-asleep man doesn't wake-up or move as Brett goes through each pocket turning them to the outside. He is moving so fast that he tears one completely open, then he takes off his shoes.

FULL SHOT OF DEAD FACE OF GERALD AND STREET SOUNDS

As Brett backs up and walks away slowly, we see Gerald's bulging eyes and hear the semi-asleep man now snoring.

INT MARTY'S MOM AND KENSI BLYE ARE TENDING BAR - DAY

Keane, the Vietnam vet and wife Hetty Lange are sitting and talking. Marty's mom and Kensi are just listening. They all stop to pay attention to the news blasting from the TV about a body found in skid row - another homeless victim.

KEANE

Coroners don't get enough time to ask questions or examine an autopsy properly

HETTY

It's like Burger King. Fast in- fast out

KEANE

They can't waste time, if they know from the go it's a dead end

HETTY

It's like this. Tutes get dead and pimps have alibis up yang, so nothing happens. Who goes after a trick?

KEANE

Mmm. Winos, druggies, homeless - no investigation.

HETTY

This new dead one - Gerald somebody. Weird. Killer left a huge wedding ring on his finger.

KEANE

So the killing is not a mugging, but no one will investigate

HETTY

The job has gotten just too big

Marty Deeks, tenderhearted, mean P.I. - Act 1 - Scene 1 - 5

Credits and music (Hell to Pay by Five Finger Death Punch or similar) continue over the following sequence

CUT TO

INT HELEN'S SPIRITUAL HAVEN - CELL PHONE SCREEN - P.I. SEARCH - DAY

Many searches will reveal that the information comes up only under a few key words, so it's pretty hard to find.

THE MARTY DEEKS SERVICE - our trained, sophisticated, discrete staff have specialized in closed cases since 1982. Next line reads, Criminal Cases Only and next line reads, 24-hour service, licensed and bonded. Last line provides the address in Los Angeles.

NEW ANGLE - PAPER DOODLES - DAY

Address scribbles

PAN UP TO FACE OF HELEN

She is first client in series, so let's grab a notable. Paula Patton might be up for the part. She has eyes that could drown you and a smile that could melt stone.

CUT TO

Chrysler convertible races down road toward the address scribbled on the paper. Behind the wheel is Helen.

FADE TO SEE VIEW FROM HER WINDSHIELD

She drives up, down, turns right and then left trying to find the location. Olvera Street is a block long, street vendors, tons of cafes, and history.

EXT TRAIN TO UNION STATION - DAY

Three people are sitting together. The one facing the couple is named Marty Deeks. You'd mistake him for a professional surfer or a musician; he has that kind of look. Across from him sits his close friends, Eric Beale and Nell Jones, who are now happily married. They are both barely over thirty, but can still be trusted. They look nerdy with binoculars on the Metrolink train to Oceanside Harbor Village. Imagine them on jet skies with binoculars.

ERIC

Ya know. From Union Street Station you can catch Amtrak outta here

NELL

Let's go back to San Francisco on the Amtrak from here

EXT PAID PARKING WANDERS AROUND - DAY

As Helen pulls into the paid parking area, she looks for a sign or ad. Nothing

FADE TO SEE VIEW FROM HER EYES - DAY

She asks vendors, owners, stores about a P.I. Service. Nothing. Exhausted, she finally sees some words in English and a familiar vibe. The neon sign was a turn-off, but at least it was in English. Inside the bar, she saw wallpaper peeling from the wall. It had no visual appeal; the vinyl seats had horrible rips . No one served her, so she walked up and ordered a beer and asked about a P.I. Service.

HELEN

Ever heard of a P.I. named Marty Deeks?

KENSI

He'll be here soon. I'll give you the heads-up when he walks in.

HELEN

Thanks. That would be nice.

EXT. NEAR BAR - ERIC, NELL, MARTY WALK TO BAR

ERIC

You can't come? What have we done?

NELL

What do you mean? You told me you'd be coming and I got it all arranged.

We've been the best of friends.

MARTY

Come on guys. Don't let it get so personal.

ERIC

Fuck personal. We went to a lot of hassle to make the trip nice and worth it.

NELL

You're broke right? Marty, this won't cost you a dime.

MARTY

We can't. It's business

As they enter, Kensi nods her head and flashes her eyes toward a table with a nicely dressed single woman. As Deeks approaches, she speaks first.

HELEN

Are you Marty Deeks, the private investigator?

MARTY

Yes?

HELEN

Are you Marty Deeks, the ex con that was innocent?

MARTY

(With a snarl) Yep, that describes me perfectly

HELEN

I never thought you murdered

MARTY

How can I help you?

Kensi overhears the conversation.

KENSI

You must be the woman from the Spiritual Shop

Ned, from the pot dispensary told me to expect a visit from you. Said he was called by a mutual L.A.P.D. friend, Sweet Lu.

Kensi points to the quilt hanging from the wall, as if it is of value. It is shredded in many spots. They walk toward it and shockingly Kensi pulls back the quilt like a curtain and reveals a door, as she opens the door squeaks.

KENSI

What would the world be like without WD-40?

MARTY

(with a growl) Full of squeaks

INT OFFICE - DAY

The medium sized office is obviously decorated exquisitely by Deek's mom. The entire place is white with gold trim. The floor is white marble with gold running through it and the ceiling is painted like a spinning top with angled stripes to the point exactly in the center.

The first thing we see, in the middle of the back wall is a window that she framed with Marty's P.I. license, bonding and the form granting his release from prison. Between the black and white forms, we see some black and white photographs of a few children's faces of those rescued. To the right of the door we see a high glass Treiber adjustable glass round table with 5 low-back faux white leather adjustable bar stools all with gold plated chrome that take up the corner and space to the door. The remaining space to the back wall sits rows of gold mirrored filing cabinets. Above the table, chairs and the cabinets are more paintings of the Del Dykes family, that dropped the Del as time went by. The family tree took up the entire back wall, as well. To the left of the door - to the left of the table, chairs, cabinets, window and paintings is the family wall. We see a beautiful montage of Deek's mom, dogs, wife, surf boards drawn in mural fashion by Kensi. In the U.S.A. Deeks became the name and is everywhere on that wall in graffiti art. Since all the art is painted by Kensi (She is not trying to become a famous painter, so is unknown), the only thing in the room of real value is a priceless, antique coat of arms that was bought at an auction in Dykesfield, England. It is anchored on the door above the sentimental, historical painting.

MARTY

(With a hand gesture) This is my wife, Kensi

HELEN

(she nods) Nice to meet you. I've heard nice things.

(She turns around and does a complete 360)

From the back of the room, looking at the door that is painted white we see through her eyes an elegant painting. Under the painting is a plaque that reads:

FADE IN CLOSE UP OF PLAQUE

William Del Dykes, who represented the Earl of Cumberland in Parliament during the rein of Henry VI

This is quite

MARTY

Unusual?

HELEN

Yes, but I was going to say historical

MARTY

It's tax deductible and it's now earthquake proof.

KENSI

(With a smile, this joke went flat) Thanks to the Calif. requirement of earthquake proofing, we're in hock up to the point in our tent museum (she rolls her eyes to the ceiling center)

(a pause, beat)

HELEN

(As her eyes look up from the floor, she sighs) I'm in need of a Private Investigator.

Marty Deeks, tenderhearted, mean P.I. - Act 2 - Scenes 1-5

Marty and Kensi walk to the table and motion to Helen to sit down. She looks worn-out. As the third person sits, lights in the room adjust and music begins to play automatically. Kensi programmed Moon Dawg to begin the surf instrumental line-up.

HELEN

I want to retain you; I need a lot of help

MARTY

m-m-m-m

KENSI

(With a smile, this joke also went flat) Fine, but can you afford us?

HELEN

(Angrily) What did you say?

MARTY

Let's get the money business straight now, from the top

HELEN

You don't know what I need or want

KENSI

We don't do this for fun or adventure. We must make a living

HELEN

What I need

MARTY

Yes, but let's talk about fees first. It might save us all a lot of time. Plus the case must be criminal, not between two individuals, only. In other words, the lawsuit must state the individuals name against the city, county, state or Fed. Gov.

HELEN

(She nods that she understand) You can't set fees, without knowing

KENSI

Let's be clear. We expect a $60 - $100 hourly fee, depending on the complexity

HELEN

What?

MARTY

Yes, and you'll pay extra for mileage, background checks and such fees

HELEN

And I suppose you require a retainer, right?

KENSI

Yes, there's a $1,500 retainer required - due right now.

It's refundable only if the work is not done in a timely manner and it does not cover any hourly or extra fees.

HELEN

(hesitatingly) It's more than I expected

MARTY

The case must be a closed file. I'm not about to get mixed up in a L.A.P.D. ongoing case.

HELEN

Neither of you are very friendly, now

KENSI

We used to listen to everyone; we got very depressed and in the end they had no money

HELEN

(big pause, fidgeting) She stares at them both intently. I've heard that many investigators do get involved

MARTY

For our mental health, we decided to handle it this way which includes waiting for the L.A.P.D. to close the case

KENSI

You can try other investigators and they might be cheaper, but our results and reputation are pretty impressive.

HELEN

(She acts like she is about to leave, but instead grabs her purse) Do you take credit cards?

MARTY

Absolutely not. We accept cash or a bank card, only

HELEN

(Angrily she puts the credit cards back in her wallet and takes out her bank card)

Here, and flips it over in front of him

MARTY

(looks at card) Your name is Helen Whitehall. Let's see your driver's license (Hands the cards to KENSI)

KENSI

Yep, the names match (Runs the card)

Everyone is silent and apparently listening to the music

KENSI

Transaction went through just fine

HELEN

Did you expect it to decline? Anyway, are you ready to listen now?

MARTY

Yes, of course. How may we help you, Helen Whitehall.

HELEN

A couple months ago. You may have seen it on the news. Another skid row murder.

Gerald Whitehall still had his wedding ring on his finger. It was not a mugging; he was my father. (She tries to hold back tears and sobs)

The police say they have no leads and closed the file

MARTY AND KENSI, Simultaneously

Skid Row?

Kensi leaves the office to do a normal procedure

HELEN

(Glaringly she asks for some sort of put-down) He was a drunk and a meth-head

Marty doesn't utter a sound

HELEN

(She continues, after waiting for some smart remark) A couple years back, my mother died and it 'bout killed him

(long pause, a beat)

He gave up caring and taking care of himself

(long pause, a beat)

At first, I didn't notice the excess drinking

I tried and tried to make him happier, make him forget (a sigh)

I didn't notice the meth-head behavior; I noticed his black rotten teeth (a sigh)

He ended up a homeless bum (a sigh)

MARTY

(long pause, a beat) The cops have stopped doing anything?

HELEN

You must be friends with a friend of a friend of mine. Remember Lindy or Sweet Lu? When the cops stopped investigating; they closed that fucking file on me and Sweet Lu recommended I seek you out

MARTY

I haven't heard that name in like forever. Ya know, those L.A.P.D. officers aren't pussy's; they tough. If they think it's impossible to solve at this time or there's no case to solve, then probably they're right.

HELEN

Nope. I have something

MARTY

Did you tell them?

HELEN

Yep, and they still think it's another dead end.

MARTY

What's so important?

HELEN

Come meet my bro. Then I'll tell you all about it

MARTY

(long pause, a beat, then he grabs his cell phone) Just a minute, we'll go as soon as I hear from Kensi

HELEN

Then you're taking the case

MARTY

Possibly, Let's talk to your brother first

FADE IN - CLOSE UP OF CELL PHONE TEXT

KENSI

Kensi texts to Marty: Helen Whitehall has a clean background check - at least a quick look-see.

INT STOCK ROOM OF PHARMACEUTICAL DEPT IN A DRUG STORE - DAY

FADE IN - CLOSE UP SHOT - SIMON WHITEHALL

We see a 19-year old boy, who looks very bullied because of his looks, smell and behavior. His personal hygiene is non-existent. We see huge pimples, very greasy hair and dirty fingernails. His white coat pharmaceutical uniform is wrinkled and looks dingy. He smells. When the boss screams, he cowers. When a co-worker hands him gloves, he scowls and glares. On his break he grudgingly agrees to meet his sister out back for a smoke and a quick talk.

SIMON

You dumb bitch. I told you I don't want to talk no more about it

HELEN

I want to introduce you to Marty Deeks. He's a private investigator I'm trying to hire.

MARTY

(Nods his head)

SIMON

If my boss finds you back here, he'll yell and tell you both to leave

MARTY

I'll take the chance

SIMON

I'm not talking about my father. Helen, what'd he do for us, except beg for money? Leave it be. He took our money, got high and somebody killed him. The end.

Helen smacks him across the face and he tries to retaliate, but Marty stops him

SIMON

You're not mom, Helen. It just doesn't work; thought you would have caught on by now. He left you the Dodge Ram truck, not me. I don't want it, but not me.

HELEN

I know you cared; that you loved him, too

SIMON

No, I think not. He called you the beautiful princess and treated you like a queen.

He called me boy and told me to haul his golf bags around the course and take out the garbage. Me showing love for this man would be hypocritical.

HELEN

OK, if you want to play games then we're off to visit your Mrs. Grady.

SIMON

(long pause, a beat) You wouldn't do that

HELEN

Follow me, Mr. Deeks, let's visit Mrs. Grady

Simon moves to block them from leaving

SIMON

Don't do it, Helen

HELEN

Be agreeable, that's all I ask

SIMON

(He growls) OK, fine. Mr. Deeks, are you a cop?

MARTY

What I am is a whole lot older, wiser and way more experienced. I spent too many years in prison and have no patience for punks, so you'd better get smart, fast. Or I'll have to show you the way to the floor.

SIMON

(intimidated by tone of voice and demeanor) OK, OK

Helen, promise you won't go after Mrs. Grady. Promise me

HELEN

I promise

SIMON

(He looks to the right, then to the left) Mr. Deeks, this Mrs. Grady stuff is just nothing. Really.

MARTY

Why does Helen think it is?

SIMON

I make deliveries to this lady, Mrs. Grady and she likes me, that's all.

HELEN

Simon, that's not all. Tell him

SIMON

She just knows stuff, that's all

HELEN

Like mom died and dad got killed, what else?

SIMON

She knows I want to be a doctor.

HELEN

What else?

SIMON

She wants to pay for medical school

MARTY

That's it?

HELEN

No, what else?

SIMON

No biggy. Nothing more to say

HELEN

What else?

SIMON

She orders her pharmaceuticals from us and has them delivered to her home

HELEN

Now, do you get it?

MARTY

No

HELEN

Why does she order from Simon, when there's about 15 closer drugstores?

SIMON

She just likes me, that's all there is to it. Drop it

MARTY

The medical profession will be gaining a great person

(long pause, a beat)

CUT TO

EXT PIER PATIO - DAY

Helen drinks coffee; Marty plays a game on his cell phone. Saying nothing, he finally picks up his coffee and sips.

HELEN

What's wrong?

MARTY

I thought for a minute I liked you

HELEN

What happened?

MARTY

You tried to reverse the $1,500 retainer payment; the bank called for permission. I thought we'd developed a trust

HELEN

I just didn't want to use that bank account

MARTY

No more lies. The bank says you're now overdrawn. What other bank accounts do you have. Name them. I want to check the balances in each one.

HELEN

OK, I have no other accounts

MARTY

You're now overdrawn, how do you expect to pay the hourly and any extra fees?

EXT 2-WEEKS AGO -GARAGE SALE - MONTAGE - FLASHBACK - DAY

CUT TO

-Kensi wishing for a truck to haul around her art and supplies

-Hetty wanting to buy a small bookstore - a spiritual store

-Keane wanting to serve liquor and pot in the bookstore; he's wanting to rent earphones with music choices and games

INT THE OFFICE - DAY

HELEN

(sobbing with real tears) I just want the killer brought to justice. My father is dead and I want the killer in jail. You have the retainer, now how can we work out the hourly plus extra fees? I'm begging you for a break

MARTY

If you sign over the Dodge truck and allow a partner in your store for say 6-months, maybe it'll work. How old is that truck?

HELEN

Dad bought it and never drove. It's clean and not even a year old

MARTY

OK, fine. Where is your spiritual store located. Location is everything - and access.

HELEN

It's near UCLA

MARTY

Great, those kids love spiritual stuff. What about parking?

HELEN

It's in a shopping area, near a supermarket

MARTY

Perfect. No more lies. One more lie and I'll take the store, forever. Got it?

HELEN

Got it. So you'll take the case?

MARTY

Give me about 3 hours. Meet me back at the bar at 5:00 P.M. sharp. If I decide to take the case, the papers for the truck and partnership will be ready for you to sign. In fact, give me the keys and the truck now.

INT CORONER'S OFFICE - DAY

MARTY

(Hands him a form)

I see on record that you did the autopsy on Mr. Grady.

DR. FELDMAN

Yes. He had many autopsies performed by various physicians

(a beat)

The wife, Mrs. Grady, is a real nice lady. The insurance company didn't believe the death was natural. The man was very homely and about sixty years older. He died 'bout two months ago. How sad for her, right? She will get millions.

KENSI

I dug a little bit and found this information way abnormal. Yeah. Insurance companies hate to pay, especially if there's fraud. They haven't paid her a dime, yet.

DR. FELDMAN

Yes, I know. This man probably ate cheese burgers at every meal; his arteries were so jammed up.

MARTY

What causes clogged, hard arteries? Drugs?

DR. FELDMAN

Carotid arteries are caused by a build-up of plaque; it's the 5th biggest cause of death in the U.S.A. right now

His heart attack was officially caused by over eating and drinking.

(a beat)

Do you want to reopen the case? If so, I think you're going against the tide.

CUT TO

INT TALK ON CELL PHONE - DAY

DR. FELDMAN

(As Marty and Kensi leave the Dr.'s office; the Dr. dials Mrs. Grady)

Mrs. Grady?

(a beat)

Not sure if you remember me. I'm one of the physicians . . .

INT MRS. GRADY LIVING ROOM - DAY

MRS. GRADY

Yes, I remember. You performed the autopsy on my husband.

WE HEAR ONLY VOICE AND STILL SHOT: We see a magnificently, put-together, largely proportioned woman. She's not gorgeous, but she has a raw sexiness about her. Those long, dancer legs help her exude mystery.

DR. FELDMAN

There was a man here. He was interested in the details of the autopsy report.

MRS. GRADY

That's odd

DR. FELDMAN

He might be trying to open up the case again.

(a beat)

I wanted to call and give you the heads up, because you were treated so badly. It was obvious that he died of natural causes. Now is the time to stop him, if you can.

MRS. GRADY

Thanks, Dr. Feldman.

(a beat)

Do you happen to have his name?

DR. FELDMAN

Oh, yes of course. They are a husband and wife team, but the name on the card is: The Marty Deeks Service, with no address.

MRS. GRADY

Thank-you so much for the phone call

DR. FELDMAN

No problem, Mrs. Grady. If you get over near Palos Verdes, give me a call and we can . . .

MRS. GRADY

Sure. I still have your number. I'll make sure and give you a call soon.

(a beat)

Maybe in a couple weeks

DR. FELDMAN

Just call the cell phone; I'll answer

MRS. GRADY

Will do and thanks, again.

-they both hang up their cell phones

-he has a big grin on his face thinking he might get lucky

CUT TO

EXT CORONER'S OFFICE PARKING LOT CONVERSATION - DAY

MARTY

Why is Mrs. Grady showing such favor to Simon, the brother? Medical school isn't cheap. Very weird. It's just too neat. Mr. Grady dies one year into marriage and leaves her with a boat load of money. Good thinking, Ken. Something is not right. On top, we have this Gerald Whitehall murder all within about ten months. Nope, someone is very dirty.

KENSI

m-m-m-m

MARTY

Why the silence? Come on . . . let me back in. My prison term was hard on us both. You're not the only one hurt. OK, OK. You're right. You're like 182% right. I wasn't thinking of you at all . . . or the way you feel.

(a beat)

I was thinking about me and how to make the situation benefit me. I'm an idiot. A selfish idiot. Can you forgive me?

KENSI

(silence)

MARTY

I'm leaving now. I'm walking outta this parking lot.

(a beat)

I'm going

KENSI

Bye-Bye

MARTY

(as he walks out about 15 yards, he turns around to face her)

I'm really going

KENSI

Good

MARTY

(after he walks about another 15 yards, he turns to face her again)

Bye

KENSI

Bye

MARTY

(he continues to walk away)

KENSI

(she sees him gone and then slowly pulls out her cell phone and dials Uber, which is on speed dial. Before she gets a person on the line, she hears a screech)

MARTY

(She sees the truck of her dreams. When the driver's door flies open, there sits Marty. After jumping out he sweetly says . . .)

Don't jump to any of your negative conclusions. This is your truck, not mine. I AM outta your life.

(he gestures for her to take the driver's seat and holds open the door. )

No need for such a beautiful woman to be stranded here in the coroner's parking lot.

(he then slams the door closed)

Of course, now I'm stranded here in the middle of nowhere.

KENSI

(she sighs)

Get in

MARTY

(He grabs the door handle and slides in so fast)

I love to see you beg

(he slams the door shut)

KENSI

(the tires screech again on her exit)

INT BAR SIGNING OF CONTRACTS - 5PM SHARP

Helen cries and apologizes. Marty agrees to take the case.

-Marty flirts with his eyes

-Brett touches her a lot

-Dr. Feldman tries to attract with witty one-liners

INT DINING ROOM WITH GLASS DOORS TO POOL - DAY

DR. FELDMAN

(Whispers and points to Marty with eyes and head nodding) He's the investigator asking questions about the autopsy

BRETT

(Whispers) How did he get here. Who let him in?

MRS. GRADY

(Whispers - I let him in. He said he knew my ex and was very sad about his death.

MARTY

(Walks up to the three - what are we whispering about?)

I feel like I knew Mr. Grady. Greed and jealousy are such great motives for murder

Imagine, one of you could be his murderer. How much did she pay the good Dr. or the helpful boyfriend?

Or did Mrs. Grady do it herself?

DR. FELDMAN

But it wasn't a murder.

MARTY

So you say

SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC starts with low volume and builds

Kensi arrives late to discover three sinister looking possible killers. Marty introduces his wife, who says . . .

KENSI

I went to my psychic friend today, Keane.

(a beat)

He says the death of Mr. Grady and the drunk, meth-head Gerald Whitehall are connected

(a beat)

He could see clearly a form the coroner fills out with time of death, name, gender etc.

Keane, you need to follow Brett home. When he leaves, you need to tear his house apart.

KEANE

Am I looking for anything special?

KENSI

Hetty, you follow Dr. Feldman and rip his house up; you're NOT looking for anything special

HETTY

Should I put some fake dolls with pins in them - like under the bed?

KENSI

Excellent idea. Marty and I will have fun breaking all that glass and throwing stuff in the pool

MARTY

We've got between now and tomorrow afternoon's seance to plan it perfectly

KEANE

I found in my research that Mrs. Grady is really into the dead speaking to her

MARTY

Perfect. So we have to make her believe that the dead will come after her

HETTY

Imagine that ego freak, Brett being a Buddhist. We can really push karma. Bye-bye fancy car and all his loved gadgets

INT MONTAGE OF INSIDE HOUSE AND POOL AREA DESTRUCTION -DAY

-camera pans destroyed house of Brett - eerie voice begins automatic play, when someone walks in the front door, for 15 minutes: I am Mr. Grady aka Eugene

-camera pans destroyed house of Dr Feldman - eerie voice begins automatic play, when someone walks in the front door, for 15 minutes: I am Mr. Whitehall aka Gerald

-camera pans destroyed house and pool of Mrs. Grady - eerie voice begins automatic play, when someone walks in the front door, for 15 minutes: You will get no rest, no sleep, no life until you turn yourselves into the police and confess - Isn't revenge grand - What goes around certainly comes around

SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC starts with low volume and builds

EXT OUTSIDE IN THE MANCE BUCHANON PARK NELL BEGINS SEANCE - DAY

NELL

(Nell points to a beautiful old tree) All cell phones must be in the wicker basket located by that huge tree over there. Do it now.

EXT LOTS OF SPACE AND PEOPLE WALKING ABOUT - FROM SEANCE CIRCLE TO PARKING LOT - DAY

CLOSE-UP SHOTS

-Marty cutting brake line to Brett's atomic silver Lexus

-Keane cutting brake line to Dr. Feldman's Chrysler

-Kensi cutting brake line to Mrs. Grady's Lincoln

-Eric picks up wicker basket with cell phones

NELL

Like we are praying, let's join hands and let the host of spirits enter

I send the most appreciative invitation to the Archangel Michael for safety and protection.

(a beat)

I see you.

I see you here and say for us all, Welcome, in ignorance of the realm of the dead we beg you to help us

(a beat)

We wish to contact Eugene Grady and Gerald Whitehall, let them talk through me

(a beat)

ERIC

(waving a cloth full of scents i.e. lavender, carnation, lilac under Nell's nose)

(a beat)

If I give you the promise to bring your killer(s) to justice . . .

Would you reveal what you know?

(a beat)

I .. I know you've got no reason to trust me

EUGENE GRADY (Talking through Nell)

OK, I'll trust, for now. My name is Eugene Grady and I want to tell you about her; about the poison

ERIC

I want you to describe the moment you came to the conclusion and stopped making excuses

EUGENE GRADY (Talking through Nell)

My hair began to fall out and I was continually vomiting, but she showed no love. She wouldn't take me to the Doctor

ERIC

Is there more? Did you get a good enough look at the killer?

EUGENE GRADY (Talking through Nell)

I only saw the back of his/her head. She had me drink this tea every morning and each night. It had such an aroma

EXT LOTS OF SPACE AND PEOPLE WALKING ABOUT - FROM SEANCE CIRCLE TO PARKING LOT - DAY

CLOSE-UP SHOTS

-Mrs. Grady had a tear about to explode from her eye

-Brett sat motionless

-Dr. Feldman's face looked so alarmed and disgusted

DR FELDMAN

Your sexiness overcame my ability to think, Mrs. Grady. I now believe the death was not natural and it's too late. You had the body cremated

(Dr. Feldman ran to his car)

ERIC

Please listen to me carefully, Gerald Whitehall (looks deeply into the eyes of Nell)

(a beat)

If I give you the promise to bring your killer(s) to justice . . .

Would you reveal what you know?

(a beat)

I truly believe there is a a very sick killer sitting in this circle

GERALD WHITEHALL (Talking through Nell)

I .. remember the killer walking away, like I was actually seeing him and I followed him, until he returned to my body and slung me over his shoulder

ERIC

Is there anything more

GERALD WHITEHALL (Talking through Nell)

No, nothing

NELL

This is the end of the seance, but an odd thing happened this morning. When I woke up on the kitchen table I found three weird things.

(a beat)

I found a modern necktie that would certainly have plenty of Brett DNA on it - Gerald Whitehall's body was not cremated

(a beat)

A photograph in a nice frame of Mrs. Grady and Brett, both naked. Brett was wearing just his necktie. The necktie found on the kitchen table

(a beat)

Third thing planted on my kitchen table was a huge plastic bag of hemlock, with plenty of Mrs. Grady fingerprints

(a beat)

Do we have ghosts running around here?

INT BAR/OFFICE - EVENING

- all are gathered talking about the seance

-no one is seated except Marty

SWEET LU

Hurry give me the cell phones and the necktie, I have a pressing engagement

MARTY

I bet you do and I like the bra it suits you; it should be pressing up against someone tonight

SWEET LU

Yep, it's all written in the stars

MARTY

INT DEEKS RV NIGHT

MARTY

Sorry about the mess; the maid didn't come today (he is caressing her head and playing with her hair)

KENSI

You can't come home, until you promise me you won't go after the people who put you in prison. I'm done crying.

MARTY

(Gulps down a wad in his throat) You know we have to go back to Mrs. Grady's house; yes, a stake out. We must find the connection between the dead men

KENSI

Keane and Hetty did a background, but they were looking for criminal records. I'm glad you put Nell and Eric on the job of digging deeper, in all directions

MARTY

No choice. They need to return to San Francisco and I need Keane and Hetty here. They need to interview the people Eric and Nell dig up; the mother or father of both men or witness/people they've talked to introducing each other as friends or brothers etc.

KENSI

I wonder what happened with those cut brake lines. I know none of us is wishing for a death

INT OCEANSIDE BEACH BREAK CAFE - MID MORNING

It's a bright sunny morning; Kensi and Marty are seated under an outside awning looking over a nice garden. We see them eating huge pancakes with sausages in the middle topped with dripping butter.

MARTY (V.O.)

That Eugene Grady was a sly one. He sure didn't want her to get away with his murder

CAMERA MOVES TO CLOSE-UP OF Mrs. Grady slumped over the steering wheel

MARTY (V.O.)

How'd he know we'd tear apart all this flooring I don't know, but it was genius

CAMERA MOVES TO CLOSE-UP OF Brett flung through windshield

MARTY (V.O.)

It's funny how you can live a life and have hidden connections - WOW - what a smack in the face

CAMERA MOVES TO CLOSE-UP OF Dr. Feldman laying on the red, blood-stained sand

MARTY (V.O.)

Gerald Whitehall is the key. Without his addictions taking over, we'd never solve this case

Marty Deeks, tenderhearted, mean P.I. - Act 5 - Scenes 1 - 5

MUSIC: Suspense

SERIES OF IMAGES:

- Sweet Lu listening and listening to cell phone conversations

- Nell and Eric desperately searching internet

- Sweet Lu reading and reading text messages

- Keane and Hetty interviewing the old, young and even children

- Sweet Lu testing the DNA from the tie

- Kensi and Deeks interviewing Mrs. Grady's neighbors

(In front of Mrs. Grady's house - MRS. FILMORE)

No, we've been out of the country for the last six months; sorry we can't help

(In front of Mrs. Grady's house - MR. SANDERS)

Nope, but check with that house (points to house on left of Mrs. Grady's). I know nothing

(House on left - MR. MORELAND)

Yeah, I've heard some gossip. Talk with those on the other side.

(House on right - MRS. FITZ)

Oh my God. Yes, I know that man in the picture. Yes, he knows his name. Gerald Whitehall.

He did yard work for all of us - on this block, anyway.

MARTY

Apparently, he was murdered. Do you remember anything else about him?

MRS. FITZ

No. I'm not shocked, though. Last time I saw him, he came running over whispering about someone trying to kill him.

MARTY

Did he mention why?

MRS. FITZ

I thought it was booze or drugs talk. He said he overheard plans to kill Mr. Grady.

END OF MUSIC

INT SWEET LU L.A.P.D. OFFICE - DAY

MARTY

Glad we can help you close this case. By the way, great job on evaluating the phone and text messages.

SWEET LU

No, prob. Did you know we have all three killers under guard at the hospital? It's strange that each mentioned having no brakes. (sigh)

Now, listen to this damning example again:

BRETT (V.O.)

How should I kill him?

SWEET LU

How stupid can you get; to have this actually recorded on the phone

KENSI

No way. I'm happy they are alive. (sigh of relief)

Talking stupid. Did you see the pictures and docs in the tackle box?

SWEET LU

Oh, yeah. I never would have imagined that - how Simon fits in.

INT DEEK'S OFFICE - DAY

After the third person is seated the lights adjust and surf music begins to play

MARTY

I'm happy to see you both alive and well

SIMON

It's hard to visualize my father doing yard work. I bet he liked Mrs. Grady. (big smile on his face)

HELEN

He saw and heard stuff he shouldn't have. Yep, that'l get you killed. (tearful eyes)

(a beat)

What will happen to the killers?

MARTY

Upon recovery, they will go to trial and if found guilty

SIMON

Normally they'd get a lethal injection; but there's a moratorium on a death penalty right now.

(a beat)

What about me?

MARTY

You may not be aware of it yet, but you're special

HELEN

I sensed it. Not exactly super powers or anything, but something.

MARTY

I've had cameras and people watching every move you make

SIMON

(Fidgeting and silent)

KENSI

You must know a little bit. You tell us

(a beat)

SIMON

One time I had a dream about Mrs. Grady slumped over the steering wheel of her car. Joggers found her. Lots of times my dreams become reality.

KENSI

Did you know that recently exactly that happened to her?

SIMON
No, really?

MARTY

Yes. Odds are that your dreams will become more frequent and dead on accurate as you age.

SIMON

So. She wanted to use me.

( a beat)

HELEN

So who gets that Eugene Grady insurance money, not that it's any of my business?

MARTY

(laughs) In the tackle box was a will, notarized at the law firm Jersey Washington, Esq.

(a beat)

The beneficiary is:

(a beat)

Mr. Gerald Whitehall, a great lawnmower

(a beat)

Now, that's vengeance

KENSI

The next living relative to Gerald Whitehall is:

(a beat)

Helen Whitehall

(a beat)

The insurance policy is for one hundred million dollars
