Blue sat under a tree, slightly frustrated. It was supposed to be a clear night. But, no. It had to start pouring. Just his luck. He shook himself a little bit as he scooted back a bit more so that he was covered at least a little bit by the tree. His dark fur was starting to stick to him more than it already did. What brought a storm like this? Why did it have to happen now of all times?
Blue hadn't seen a storm like this since his father's passing. As he thought that, he couldn't help remembering the last time he had seen his father. It had been storming just as hard at this.
*Flash back*
When Blue had heard that his father had been in an accident, he rushed to the hospital as fast as his small legs could carry him. He was scared. He hadn't been given the details of what happened. Well, he didn't wait for the details. As soon as he was told, he started to run there. Water was dripping from his fur when he ran inside. The hospital seemed to be very busy. Several pokemon, mostly fire types, had come in due to injuries from the storm. Several nurses were rushing around, making sure everyone was being treated.
Blue wasn't left alone for long as a blissey came over to him. "Dear, can I help you? Are you lost?" she asked.
"I was told my dad's here. His name is Atlan." Blue told her, sounding as worried as he looked.
She nodded and led him over to the nurses desk. "Do you know what he is?" she asked, typing his dad's name in the computer.
"He's a Vaporeon."
The Blissey seemed confused for a moment but nodded her head. She gave him his room number. Blue doesn't stick around any longer. He dashes towards the room. A few different nurses tell him to slow down and be careful as he runs past them, but he doesn't seem to be paying much attention. When he reaches the room, his father is laying on a hospital bed, bandages covering him.
Atlan looked over as the sound of running had reached him. He smiled at Blue. "Hey, son." he said weakly.
"Hey, dad...are you ok?" Blue asked, nervously standing in the doorway. Was he allowed in the room?
Atlan slowly sat up a bit, trembling as he did so. He gestured for the small eevee to come over. Blue rushed over, jumping onto the bed. He snuggled into his dad, starting to cry. He was worried about his dad. He was strong. He never got sent to the hospital for any reason. His dad was clearly in bad shape. Atlan chuckled softly as he patted Blue's head.
They stayed that way for a few moments before Atlan sighed. "Blue, listen. There is something important that I need to tell you." he said softly.
"What is it?" Blue asked, looking up at his dad.
Atlan paused for a moment, pulling his son close. He rested his head on top of Blue's. "Blue, always remember our...your training. I might not always be there for you, but I will never stop watching over you. Do you understand?" As Blue nodded, he handed him what looked to be a necklace. "I want you to have this."
Blue looked at it confused as he took it. "What is this?"
"You'll know when the time is right. Protect it with all of your heart, son." He sounded even more tired now. Kissing his son's forehead, Atlan lay down, closing his eyes.
"Dad?" Blue nudged his dad, but he didn't wake up. "Dad! Please wake up."
But Atlan didn't.
Blue buried his face in his dad's side, crying heavily into the fur. His dad was gone and not going to wake up again. A few nurses came by, hearing the commotion. Upon seeing what was happening, they left Blue alone to mourn. After crying for what felt like forever, Blue pulled on the necklace, feeling that was the best way to hold onto his dad's final gift.
As he did so, Blue felt his body change. He was taller and darker. He looked down at himself and was shocked to see that he was now an umbreon. It took a moment, but he now understood what his dad had meant. Clutching the necklace, he silently vowed to protect it with his life. Without a single word, he left the hospital, not looking back. He couldn't. He had a job to do now.
*End of flashback*
A water droplet dropped onto his snout, pulling Blue from his thoughts. He looked around to see that the rain had stopped. He stood and shook the water off of himself. It was time to get moving again. Blue glanced around before beginning to run again, the necklace bouncing on his chest as he disappeared into the dark night.
