It happened many centuries ago. A group of rogue Dragonians calling themselves Rib-Hunters fought the lanterns for control over the batteries. All the Lantern Corps had to work together in order to bring down the near unstoppable force. The Rib-Hunters fell that day, but so did many of the Lantern Corps. All but the Green were wiped out. The batteries however, were hidden away by the Guardians in dimensions where they could never be found, until recently that is.
The yellow battery was found by a bug-like alien known as Kanjar Ro. Abin Sur infiltrated his ship to find anything about the battery. He was found out and attacked by the Butcher known as Kuch. He escaped into a ship and flew to the planet Earth to look for a new Lantern. He met Hal Jordan and gave him the ring. Hal was found by Sinestro, Tomar Re, Budika and Kilowog. He was brought to Oa for a conference with the Guardians.
After going through a rough patch with them, the rest of the Lanterns accepted him, but still thought he had a lot to do before he was a true Lantern. Later, he was sent on a mission along with a few dozen other Lanterns to go after Kanjar Ro. They fought at the space station, but he escaped through a wormhole gate. They went after him and this is what happened.
Ro and his second in command were trying to outfly the Lanterns, who were slowly gaining ground, so-to-speak.
"Hey, it's time for you to go to work. I want you to make it look like you're aiming for Sinestro as much as everyone else, just don't hit him." Ro said this to a very large hulking form at the back of the cockpit. It stood up and walked toward the door.
"I expect my payment after I am done getting them off you. You know what will happen if you don't," it said to him in the deepest voice you could imagine.
"Yes, I know. The two middle sections have your payment." He turned back to the screen. "I hate having to get help from one of them, but he should keep us alive." The hulking form left the room and walked out of sight. Ro put his head in his hands.
"I still can't believe that one of them survived."
Meanwhile, on the outside of the ship.
More of Ro's men were running onto the back deck to combat the Lanterns. They started firing on the green space-police. Jordan conjured a green whip and swung it past the bullets, hitting two of the men firing upon them. They were knocked off the ship and hit the wall of the wormhole, getting vaporized instantly.
All the Lanterns shot dozens of streams of energy, aiming for the ships engines. The energy stopped right before it hit. Nobody expected that, or what happened next. The energy continued flowing out of the power rings until the green glow surrounding the lanterns flickered. It converged on one point and concentrated. They saw a figure behind it.
"No, it can't be," one of them exclaimed.
"It is," Arisia replied, "that's a Rib-Hunter." She couldn't believe what she was seeing. Nobody could.
"But that's impossible," Kilowog added, "They were all wiped out centuries ago by the rest of the Lantern Corps."
"I don't know how, but one survived." Arisia finished. The now known Rib-Hunter charged the swirling pool of green energy with a blackness that enveloped, purged and corrupted it. It spread out into miniature orbs and turned into crystal shards as big as an average human, but compared to the monster they now encountered, they were the size of a large jewel in comparison to a human.
It threw it's arms forward and the energy shards flew toward the Lanterns, gaining and hitting with momentum that was equal to several bundles of dynamite. Not only that, but the forward motion of the ship and the targets added a few gallons of nitro-glycerin to the force.
Most of the Lanterns were either blown apart, or smashed into the walls of the wormhole. What was a few dozen was now down to seven. They tried to shoot the Rib-Hunter, but he stopped the energy again and threw it back at them.
They put up shields to stop the beams. The beams exploded when they hit. Arisia saw nothing more than a giant fist smashing through her construct. She couldn't dodge and she was hit in the face. The Rib-Hunter had jumped out of the ship to fight them close-up.
"Arisia," Jordan grabbed her with his ring before she hit the wormhole. "Damn, she's unconscious. Ch'p, can you hold her?" he asked the squirrel. He agreed and kept her away from the fight so she could recover. Jordan went straight for the enemy. He tried getting the drop on him by coming up behind him.
Jordan brought both arms down on the bad guy's head. He expected to hit, but the Rib-Hunter grabbed his arms with one hand and threw him across the expanse. He nearly hit Tomar Re who grabbed and stopped him.
"Are you alright?"
"I'm fine. What the hell is this guy?" Hal didn't know half of what was going on.
"Judging from the abilities that we've seen him use and according to Arisia, he's what's known as a Rib-Hunter. Arisia and Sinestro are the only ones that have seen them. This would be the second time they've fought one. One of them has the power to destroy an entire planet in less than an Earth minute. But they're not the most terrifying being out there. Nobody knows why they call themselves Rib-Hunters, they just do." He stopped talking to Hal.
"We need to pull out Sinestro. Arisia is down and we've already lost more Lanterns than is allowed by the guardians. We have to retreat, NOW," Tomar yelled as loud as he could.
"Fine," this voice came from their opponent, "if you want to leave, I will help you out." He held out his hand and a hole opened up in the transport tunnel. "I was hired to keep you off him. It was my choice to kill so many of you." He held out his other hand toward them and threw it in the direction of the breach in the wormhole.
The Lanterns were thrown through the hole and left behind in empty space.
