Hello Readers! I know that I have not been posting very much as of late, but with the current climate and the spread of the virus, I have had more time stuck at home, so I will be writing more on my stories in the coming future! My story 'Will of the Mind, Way of the Sword' is having its next part be a work in progree, but please give it some time. I have not written on it in a while, so I need reread it to connect myself with the flow of the story.
To fill in for it, I have had this one in my thoughts for a while. It's not as glamorous, but I really wanted to write about this little bean for quite a while. This is my first official OC-centric story to be released, so I hope that it goes well.
Thank you to all that have given their support in previous stories. I am not avoiding it, but it is simply hard to continue a WIP that was hiatus for such a long time.
Enough ranting, on to the new story!
Chapter 1: Gentle Giant
-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-
It might have been very strange in another world, but seeing a massive suit of armor go to school each day became a common occurrence in the Gunma prefecture of Japan, Kashiiki Middle School already being prepared for the unusual, giant, and bulky kind of quirks that filter through the classrooms each year.
Said suit of armor was a dark royal blue in color, sunny gold accents lining the edges of of his armor, casting light in directions whenever it reflected off of the shining metal. The suit stood at a powerful 7 ft tall, the shoulders popping out and making it look that much larger. However, the helmet was by far the most eye catching object of the whole body, a medieval looking helmet with a thin slit down where the nose and mouth would be. Two glowing gold eyes cast in a permanent look of intimidation. Sticking out of the top was a pair of large horns, which added to the massive creature's height by a whole eight inches, totaling him to be a bit too tall for the already expanded doors.
(Warhammer 40k: Chaos Marine Armor, Thousand Sons Warband, the cover for this story without the back piece or multitude of spikes all over the armor)
The teacher had once reluctantly asked why he did not remove the horns, as they were not a part of his body. The student simply stood there silently. Several moments passed before said student moved his hands up, placing his steel alloy infused hands on the horns and rubbing them tenderly. It was the end of that questioning after word had spread of his intimate reaction. It was clear to the staff Hanami Mitsu would not be taking them off, as he was extremely careful with them. He ducked under every door he entered without reaction every time, so there was nothing to overreact about. Well, despite the first few times and the repairs on the door frames.
Some questioned how he must be using his quirk to move around, which brought up the rules for using quirks while in school. The massive machine's mother brought concerns to a halt when she brought in doctor's notes and psychiatric information to the staff. Sh o course never told her son about this altercation, not wanting him to worry about it, but it allowed him to continue to school in his... attire.
The massive suit of armor sat down in his seat with a dull thump, his chair being made purely of steel and metal compared to the wooden and plastic builds currently seating the rest of the class. Due to his size, he sits in the back of the class, much to the figure's chagrin. It was hard to see from the back, and the slits in his armor did not provide full vision.
But he learned to accept it.
After classes ended each day, people going off about what they were going to do after middle school, the giant suit of armor remained silent as it went home. He ducked passed other students, holding his books in his arms as no bag could go over his shoulders. Soon, he said to himself, soon he can finally be looked at with joy instead of fear and nervous curiosity. He knew his appearance was strange, even nowadays, bu he cold never part with any part of what he wore.
He loved his suit, even if nobody else didn't. He saw how people stared at the suit which he hid inside of, murmuring and gossiping about the small chinks he made as he stalked past them in the halls every day. However, he hoped that would all change when he got to the school of his dreams. If someone who had a fire beard and glared at civilians could be a hero, then so could he. Yeah he didn't look like the nicest person in such an intimidating piece of armor, but he was pretty sure people would be happy to see him coming if they knew he was a hero. At least, that was the plan for the future.
Hanami entered his room silently (which was quite the task), stepping over to the light switch and flicking it on. It was covered with equipment, left over pieces of metal, old blueprints, and prototypes that he and a friend had worked on. Some would call it a mess, but it usually only took him three seconds to clean it with his quirk.
Decorating the largest part of his wall was one poster, almost large enough to completely envelope all of it.
"Soon." He said, smiling under his armor. "I'll be a hero, just like you."
-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-
A year past relatively quickly for the massive monster of metal, and he couldn't be happier about it. He remained under the radar of everyone's attention...reiterate, he kept negative attention away from himself. It was good too, as the last time he got caught up with some less than savory individuals, they got hurt pretty bad. But it wasn't his fault that time! He was still getting used to his armor's strength and hardness at the time, so when he had attempted to push them away... well, they ended up flying from him in the opposite direction. He was just glad he got away before they woke up with bruises and swollen faces. His bad, but he learned from such a mistake.
Now, it was his time to shine. Grabbing his new bag, which a shoulder bag with twice as much length on the strap and made of thick material which wouldn't tear if it got caught on his armor. He swung it over his shoulder, hearing it flap against the side of cold steel. He bent over it, looking inside at his pass for the school, as well as snacks, waters, and deodorant (he got sweaty under his armor), he nodded to himself and closed it back up, using only two precise fingers to zip it back up as to not break it.
"Goodbye Kaa-san." He said happily from under his suit, the metal causing his voice to come out sounding like he spoke into a pot. "I'll see you tonight!"
His Kaa-san came out from the kitchen, looking up at the massive suit of armor with a sigh. "You know you're going to have to take that off eventually." He shook his helmet animatedly. Not going to happen. He already padded the inside, and a pillow around his neck so he could sleep in it laying upright if he wanted to.
The armor covered student felt a tapping on his suit. "As much as I know you love this, I really want to see you again." She said sadly. "I know you pop out every once and a while, but... still." The little woman stared at the chest of the suit with sad eyes.
There was a pause, the energetic armor no longer moving as his Kaa-san brushed her hands over the polished metalwork. Suddenly, the front of the suit opened up, a small figure inside enveloping his mother in a one armed hug.
"I love you Kaa-san." He gave her a kiss on the cheek before sealing the suit back up with a few loud snaps and clatters, running out the door with a quick exiting phrase as he closed it behind him (making sure to duck).
The little orange haired woman simply stood there, her hand brushing over her cheek as she smiled, a tear running down her cheek. "May our love watch over you, Hanami." She said softly, staring at the door in silence.
Until a beeping went off in the kitchen, following a path of smoke following up the ceiling. The mother screamed, yelling about her ube as she scrambled back for the kitchen.
-;-;-;-;-;-;-
Even at a school like UA, the giant figure knew he might face a bit of caution because of his size, he didn't expect to be surrounded by a horde of other entrance examinees, all of them prepping their quirks and questioning him harshly about who he was and why a villain was trying to fake his way into the exam.
For one, that comment hurt, as he did not look like a villain. He just really liked his horns. Second, wouldn't a villain try to be conspicuous? However, before he could voice these opinions, a man with scarfs around his neck stepped in. He did not looked the slightest bit pleased.
"He's trying out like the rest of you. UA wouldn't allow a villain in here, much less a very blatant one like this." Ouch, that kinda hurt. Yes, his school uniform looked really bad on him, stretched out over his armor, but it mandated he wore one for this section. The scarfed man looked over at the towering suit of armor. "Show me your access card." He stated bluntly, to which the helmet nodded rapidly. Pulling the card from his bag while accidentally ripping the zipper off in the process, he shakily presented the card to the man. He bit the inside of his lip, already ruining his newest item in less than an hour was not what had wanted. However, he could just repair it. He didn't have time to be super precise with the situation he found himself in.
And for some reason, this guy was kind of scary.
Grabbing the card out of the suit's hands, he looked at the picture, seeing the match. "State your name and birth date." He glared at the massive student lazily, to which it stood up at attention, causing a clamoring of metal. "Mitsu Hanami, July 8th." So focused on his little objective, he didn't see the reactions to his voice from the students surrounding him, who slowly began to dissipate and head inside for the briefing.
The scarfed man gave him one last look before tossing the card back at him. "Go inside before you're late." He said lazily as the armor bounced around several times to successfully catch the card before bowing with a nod. As he rose back up from his bow, the scarves man was gone, leaving the boy to question if he was seeing things on his first day.
-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-
The first thing Hanami noticed when he entered the briefing room was the fact that his chair was in the back, alongside several other chairs of larger size. Downside of his armor was always having to stay in the back, it made it harder to focus on what was going on.
He immediately noticed that while he was not the only bigger person here today, he looked the most...well, unfriendly, at least that's what he thought based on the looks from other students (even those in the larger seating area).
Sitting down at his assigned seat for his school (him being the only one from his school that he knew of), he was surprised not to hear a creaking under his weight. It was enough to bring a smile to his face, even if nobody could see it. It looked like UA would be able to accommodate him on his situation.
The lights dimmed down in the room, a loud voice catching everyone's attention from the front. Hanami nodded within his armor. He could do this.
-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-
The bus ride to the combat zones was short, but it felt like a lifetime for the person in the suit, who had been quick to jump aboard and jump back out as soon as they had stopped.
He knew people were still staring at him, but he couldn't let that get in the way. He had dealt with them for years, going to a school like UA will be different. If he could make it at least.
No, no pessimistic thoughts. He had to do this, not only for himself, but for everyone who believed in him. Those who have helped him get this far. He needed to make Him proud. Slamming his fists together, he looked at the gates with absolute determination through the slits in his armor's chest. As soon as it opened up, he dashed forward, not even waiting for a "go" from anyone, which seemed to work in his favor, as Present Mic's voice came up just a moment later, telling them to get moving.
He was not the fastest in his armor, but using his quirk, he was much faster than anyone expected a giant seven foot (seven foot eight inches with horns included) metal man to go. Seeing a two pointer, he pushed himself off the ground, hovering to everyone else's eyes as he slammed into the creatures head with a double clench fist, immediately pulling the head down to the ground without the rest of its body.
He spotted more bots and was quick to go for the attack, taking out other bots before they were destroyed by other contenders. While there seemed to be quite a lot of them, there were only so many in comparison to the amount of people fighting for them.
Minutes passed very quickly in the city-like environment, with at least half of all the point bots now destroyed, the rest being dispersed around the areas, forcing hero hopefuls to search for them and take them out for more points. Hanami himself had been lucky enough to get a good lead, and with his perception on metal, he was able to spot out the massive pieces of alloy the robots were made of before others could.
The entire area of buildings was pandemonium, everyone searching for point bots to destroy in order to secure their spots at the most prestigious school in Japan. Bits of metal were left in the wake of dozens of students, all clamoring for a few more points.
However, as they did so, a rumble in the ground alerted them of something else, several buildings tumbled out of the way of a new opponent, who was much larger than any of its other allies. It's massive multi sensor head stared down at the dozens of students, immediately moving forward with slow, but large tread wheels as it's hands grabbed at buildings and possible victims alike.
Finishing off his 36th point, Hanami was feeling the affects of pushing himself so hard. His armor was getting all hot and stuffy, and he was having a hard time keeping up with some of the other students trying out in the area. Then again, he was close to forty, so he couldn't be too upset.
Looking around what looked to be payday. Three two points and a three point with no other students in sight of them. They were hiding out, waiting to strike, but their attacks did very little to his armor and his greater than average movement.
"Help!" As the suit took a step forward, he was stopped by the call. Turning to it's direction, the zero point, which he had sense earlier, was rolling in not too far away, meaning his time was going to run short if he wanted to finish off those point bots. However, somewhat more pressing was the girl who was currently right in front of the massive machine, trying to run from the massive claws that threatened to grab at her. The hand clasped shut, barely missing the girl who managed to jump ahead of it, but the machine did not let up.
Making a split decision choice, it was obvious what he should do as he broke away from his pursuit of the point bots, running towards the intimidating robot with all the speed he could muster from the metal armor.
Said girl was running for her life, her earlobes dangling around her as she tried to escape that zero point who saw her destroy that two pointer. She had only made 32 points and she was really hoping to get a few more, now she was going to be crushed by this massive metal monster before she could even graduate middle school!
Her luck only worsened as a new figure approached from the front. She saw the massive thing coming closer and wondered if she should try to push it out of the way with her ear jacks or knock it out, but that would take a moment to do, which she did not have.
Her options were slim to none and she hated it.
The figure came in closer to her vision and despite the wind in her eyes, she could tell it was not a point bot by the shape, but it was still massive, and moving fast. It looked as though it was going to barrel into her. She came to a skidding halt, only to be forced to turn to the noise behind her. Metal contraptions shifted into place as the massive claw was nearly around her. She closed her eyes in fear.
*Slam*
*Clatter*
Pause...
Not feeling the cold grip that should have held her, she hesitantly opened her eyes, coming onto the sight of a massive metal suit of blue and gold armor standing right in front of her.
"Run!" A voice screamed from within the suit, the sound echoing within like it bounced off the inside of a cup. She didn't have time to process the sound of the voice before she nodded, running away in relief and concern of the person who had just helped her.
Running around a corner down the path, before she could even turn to see what was happening, she found herself staring at three two points and a three point, all huddled together. Hooking her jacks into each one with rapid succession, she shot several blasts of her vibrating power into all of them before they could attack, the clumsy beasts all stumbling over each other as they keeled over.
She smiled a little bit. Well, at least she was at 41 now.
-;-
Hanami didn't know why he thought this was a good idea, but it had been the only option when he saw how close the hand was to the girl. Grunting out to the girl, who fled as soon as the word was out of his mouth, he turned all his attention back to the massive robot, who's hand began to curl around him, trying to grab.
He wasn't going to let this zero point finish him off. He needed to go all out, one hundred percent if he wanted to get into UA. Focusing more of his quirk's power into his legs, arms, and the robot's fingers, he screamed with fiery energy and his suit's hands twisted, tearing two of the massive fingers off before jumping back, avoiding the other three. He took the moment to his advantage. He ducked into the alley of two buildings, quickly smashing into the one that looked stronger and hiding in the hollow brick house.
He put himself in the corner, seeing the red of the zero point's eyes shine in the hole of the building before moving on. The glow slid through the hallow guts of the fake interior, passing by him without shining on the reflective layers of metal that covered him. He held his breath as it came very close, inching just a few ticks away from his chest piece, before stopping and moving away. The light pulled out of the room, giving the suit of armor a chance to sigh outwardly in relief. At least he had hoped. He found light grace his senses once more as the whole building was pulled up from above him, the zero point looking at him with menacing red as one hand held up half of a building without any strain.
He stood back up, trying to stand tall even though he could barely move. It tossed the building away with the three fingered hand, using it's other completely in tact one to descend onto the blue and gold armor. Hanami braced himself, closing his eyes as the green fist came in.
"Time's...UP!"
Hanami waited a moment for those words to pass over him.
Time?
Did that mean?
Looking up with hesitant eyes, he found a giant fist only a few feet away from completely smashing into him. He quickly moved himself out of the blast zone just in case, standing his armor up but sagging with relief within it. It was finally over.
He hadn't made as many points as he had hoped, but at least he was able to do something his father would have been proud of. He took a moment, staring up at the massive machine before letting himself clatter to his knees. He was tired...but happy with his stupid decision to make an enemy of the massive robot. Hanami gripped his arm, remembering fondly of those who would do the same for others, who would have done the same in this situation. He really hoped that he was doing them proud.
"Hey" Pulling himself from his thoughts, his helmet went to turn 180 degrees, scaring the girl as evident by her screech. "Please don't do that!" She yelled, to which Hanami pulled the rest of the suit to follow, turning around while the head remained in place with the action. He pulled himself from his knees, once again towering over the girl, who stepped back at the action.
"G-Gomen." He said as he breathed out a sigh of exhaustion. "Are you okay?" He asked, to which the purple haired girl nodded.
"Thanks to you. Really saved my butt back there." She said as she spun an...earlobe? jack? around in a circle like a rope.
The helmet of his armor nodded, raising hand and flicking it forward like a air slap. "It was nothing, really. I'm just glad you're safe." Girl smiled at him.
"Well, we should probably get out of here before that thing might reactivate." The armor animatedly nodded, the two of them making their way to the exit with slow and tired steps. One of clicking boots, the other of heavy stomps, the person inside not having the energy to be quieter about it.
"You know, I don't know your name Mr Horned Hero." Hanami cast a glance at her, surprised that she wanted to know his name.
"M-My name? Oh! It's Hanami! Mitsu Hanami." The girl smiled up at his helmet.
"Well Mitsu Hanami, nice to meet you. My name is Jirou, Jirou Kyoka." Wow, her full name. He hadn't had many state their first names when they had to talk to him.
"It's nice to meet you, Jirou-san."
"Jirou is fine. Anyway, when you came in, I thought your armor was making your voice sound different, but talking to you now, it's obvious that it's just your natural voice."
"W-What's wrong with m-my natural voice!?"
"Nothing! Hey, no need to get so defensive one me!"
It was the longest he had talked to a person outside his Kaa-san in a while. If felt nice.
-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-
A week passed very slowly for every participant of the UA exams. While some were on autopilot, awaiting a response from the school, some were completely anxious, doing everything from training to walking in circles to keep somewhat calm.
Hanami had gone to the old metal yards and trained his quirk for hours, not only using it to pick up parts of trains and cars, but practicing with smaller stuff like organizing whole areas of metal by size and shape. He didn't realize so many rusty nails were hiding in those areas and just laying there for someone to step on. Well not anymore, that is.
Even with all his activities, school finished up rather slowly, some students already declaring that they had made it into their own schools, whether it be hero, business, or even culinary. While he ignored it, he had heard some whispering about his tryouts at UA. The joys of one of the kids in his grade being the principal's daughter. While he ignored them, some still hurt.
Too scary to be a hero.
Dangerous
Can't save anyone
Probably failed because he wasn't smart enough.
Hanami was not the brightest in his class, bi-product of being in the back, but he worked hard and knew where to put his mind. Yeah he didn't talk a lot in class, but that's because the last time he approached someone to talk, they ran away or made very quick excuses.
"Hanami!" Pulled from his thoughts of middle school came his mother, who was holding an envelope in her hand. "Your letter came in!" Smiling under his armor, he nodded his helmet.
"Could you please place it on the coffee table. I want to watch it with you." He walked over to his Kaa-san, dimming the lights in the room as he did so before getting down on his knees beside her, where she sat on the couch.
She looked at him, receiving a nod from the suit of armor before ripping the side of the envelope open. As soon as that was done, a little cartridge slipped out from the paper confines, immediately shining with a projector light.
"I am here as a projection!"
