The Green Eyed Monster

**Chapter 1**

Oh Harvey, this is Thomas" Donna said introducing them to each other.

"Kessler, we've met" Harvey said with stoic indifference as they shook hands.

"Louis spoke very highly of you" Thomas said.

"You too" Harvey said.

"Anyway, shall we?" Thomas said to Donna.

"Yeah. Goodnight Harvey" Donna said to him and followed Thomas inside the elevator.

Harvey watched her till the elevator doors clanged shut. He wasn't sure how he felt with this new development in Donna's life. All he wanted was to get a drink and-

"You look lost" Samantha's voice drowned his thoughts.

"No, it's just uh... hey you know what? I think I am gonna head out and get a drink. Care to join?" Harvey asked her.

"Yeah, all right. But it's on you" said Samantha.

Harvey followed her into the elevator. "Anymore ex- lawyer girlfriends I need to know about?" Samantha teased.

"Yeah, I will send you the list" Harvey retorted with a snarky remark.

The next day morning, Donna was already inside Harvey's office before he arrived.

"Hey, what's up?" Harvey said in a casual voice.

"I wanted to talk to you. About yesterday" Donna said.

"What about yesterday?" Harvey asked.

"I have been seeing -"

"Oh yeah about that. So you and Thomas huh?" Harvey said firing up his laptop.

"I was going to tell you. I just didn't want things to get awkward again between us. I mean-"

"Awkward? Why would things be awkward? Our lines have been very clear to me since the beginning even of they seem blurry to you" said Harvey brashly reciting Donna's own words to her.

"You are mistaken Harvey. You know, now that I have met Thomas, everything is clear as hell, even to me" Donna snapped back, hurt clearly audible in her tone. "It's just that I should have told you about Thomas sooner and I didn't so I-"

"It's okay Donna. I get it. You want your private life to be private. It's fine." Harvey said before she could finish. "Now, if you don't have anything else, I would like to get back to work"

"Yes, you better" Donna said sounding offended.

Harvey shut his laptop as he saw Donna walk out of his office. He hadn't meant to sound so rude and he knew his words had hurt her. But he had not been able to help himself. He knew he wasn't supposed to feel this way. What the hell was wrong with him? Why was Donna dating Thomas bothering him so much?

The next few days, Harvey avoided talking to Donna except it was necessary. The little he knew about what was going on with Donna's life the better. He would however watch her sometimes and he found it disturbing that she looked happy. Was it because of her new date or some other reason, he couldn't tell. He wished Rachel was here, she would have been able to tell him how serious Donna was about Thomas Kessler.

A week later , Evening -

"Louis where the hell is Donna? I've been looking for her everywhere" Harvey said.

"I saw her leaving 10 minutes ago. She had to go out for dinner" said Louis.

"Dinner? With who?" Harvey asked.

"Um.. I don't know if she has told you yet Harvey but-"

"Thomas Kessler isn't it? She told me the other day"

"Yes" said Louis.

"I don't believe this." said Harvey. "I had told her some work to do and now she is not here".

"Is this about the Kruger merger?" came Gretchen's voice as she came walking towards the pair.

"Yes, it is" said Harvey.

"Donna left the files with me. I was just about to come and give them to you." said Gretchen.

"But I haven't even checked them you know. What if I need to make some corrections? She just got promoted to COO! How the hell can she be careless like this?"

"Harvey calm down, for making corrections you can take help of any associate. You don't need donna for that. And besides it is seven already. She just left an hour early. Its not a big deal." said Louis.

"It goddamn is a big deal Louis! I dont want any associate to handle this. I need this in court tomorrow! This job was assigned to Donna and this was her responsibility!"

Gretchen and Louis stared in shock at Harvey's sudden outburst.

"Harvey you are being ridiculous. And I am sure there would be no corrections. Donna always does her work perfectly. I dont know why she would make a mistake now." said Louis.

"Stop siding with her Louis. Its time she takes responsibility as a COO and I am going to make sure she does." said Harvey and he walked away leaving Louis and Gretchen staring after him.

"What the hell was that all about? He is crazy!" Louis said to Gretchen.

Gretchen smirked. "Oh, I know alright what this is all about"

"Well then enlighten me Gretchen because I don't" said Louis.

"I am not sayimg anything. It's between him and red" said Gretchen.

"That's not fair! You know something and you are not telling me." said Louis.

"See you later, Louis. I have work to do" Gretchen said.

"Gretchen come back here!" Louis called after her but she walked away without looking back, leaving Louis extremely disappointed.

Back in his office, Harvey wanted to smash something.

Thomas goddamn Kessler.

He was popping up so many times that It was becoming unbearable. He threw the merger papers on his desk and poured himself a drink. A minute later, he had dialled Donna's number on his cellphone.

Donna was enjoying her dinner with Thomas when her cellphone rang. Seeing it was from Harvey, she excused herself and took the call.

"Where the hell are you?" Harvey asked before she could speak.

"I am out. I had a dinner plan" Donna said flinching at his harsh tone. "What is wrong?"

"Donna, I hope you are aware that the position of COO comes with some responsibilty" Harvey said testily.

"What are you talking about?" Donna said starting to get slightly annoyed now.

"I believe I had given you an assignment" said Harvey.

"If this is about the Kruger merger, I had given the documents to Gretchen. Didn't she give them to you?" Donna asked.

"She did. But what if I had some corrections to make? You need to be around whenever you are needed." Harvey said.

"I had told Louis I will be leaving early." said Donna not understanding where all the rage was coming from.

"Aren't you goddamn supposed to inform me?" Harvey yelled on the phone.

"I am not your secretary anymore Harvey! And I was going to tell you but you were not around so I told Louis who also happens to be the managing partner! So stop yelling at me and tell me what the matter is" Donna retorted.

Harvey was stalled for a moment. He realised he had done a stupid thing calling her like that. But he wasn't going to tell her that.

"I know you are not my secretary anymore. But you know what? I am a senior partner of the firm and it is my business to oversee what my employees are up to especially those who I have promoted" Harvey said.

"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" Donna questioned.

"Ever since I have promoted you, you have been leaving early, oversleeping and coming late to office and what not!" said Harvey.

"Harvey I came late just once after I got promoted. And I don't leave early everyday. I might have done it maybe twice or thrice-"

"I don't care how many times, Donna. All I care is that you did it and you are still doing it" Harvey snapped.

"Are you telling me that I am not doing my job well? Harvey, you know that I deserve this position. And you also know that I have never ran away from my responsibilites. I have always put the firm and you as my first priority when I was your secretary and now when I am COO. So, I really don't know what the hell your problem is but you really need to get your shit together" said Donna petulantly.

"That's enough. I am done talking with you. You don't want to accept your mistake, fine. I really don't care." said Harvey.

"How dare you- Harvey? Harvey? Are you there?"

Donna couldn't believe it. He had hung up on her. She dialled him back but he had shut off his phone. She was so angry that he was questioning her loyalty towards the firm. He had no fucking right to do that!

"Hey" Donna jumped at Thomas's voice.

"Thomas" Donna said.

"Are you okay?" He asked looking at her pale face. "I wondered what was taking you so long that's why I came to look"

"It's just work" said Donna.

"Do you need to be at the office?" Thomas asked.

"No, no I don't" said Donna.

"Then what is the matter? Why do you look so upset?" Thomas asked.

"Harvey is just being a goddamn asshole! That's what the matter is!" Donna cried in frustration.

"What?" said Thomas.

Donna took a deep breath. She was not going to let Harvey Specter ruin her date night. "Thomas, I am sorry. I don't need to drag you into this at all. Would you mind if I give just a quick call to Louis at work? I promise after that it will just be us for the rest of the evening"

"Okay" Thomas said smiling at her. "Make it quick. I am starving"

Donna dialled Louis's number and he picked up on the second ring.

"Louis, where is Harvey?" Donna asked him.

"In his office. Why?" Louis said.

"Is something the matter?" Donna said.

"No, why are you asking - shit wait a minute. He called you, didn't he?" Louis asked realising what his partner must have done.

"Yes he did. And it wasn't just a call. He was yelling at me as if I have committed a crime by leaving early" said Donna.

"Godammit! He had no right to do that. An hour ago he was breathing down my and Gretchen's necks because he was unable to find you" said Louis.

"Louis, I don't know what is wrong with him but he is out of his mind. I have always been loyal to this firm. Harvey knows that more than anybody else. And out of blue one day he questions my ability to handle my job-"

"Say no more, Donna. I know it's not your fault. If he calls you again, don't pick up his phone. I am going to go right now to his office and knock some sense into him" said Louis.

"Thank you Louis" said Donna.

"Enjoy your evening Donna. And don't answer his phone. Trust me by tomorrow he will have apologized to you for being an asshole" said Louis.

Donna disconnected the call and went back inside feeling a bit better.

When Louis walked to Harvey's office, he saw Harvey sitting with a drink in his hand listening to Jazz music.

"Why the hell did you just call and yell at Donna for?" Louis asked him.

"I told you she needs to acknowledge her responsibilities-"

"That's bullshit Harvey and you know it!" said Louis. "Why the hell are you being such an asshole?"

"What do you think?" Harvey asked in a calm voice.

"What would I know what goes on in that asshole mind of yours?" Louis said waspishly.

Harvey sighed. "Louis I know I shouldn't have yelled at her and said stuff to her. Its not her fault, its mine"

"You have to apologize to her" said Louis.

"Yeah, I will call her-"

"Not tonight" Louis said firmly. "I told Donna not to pick up your call"

"Why would you do that?" Harvey said irritably.

"Because I don't want you to spoil her evening!" Louis said.

Harvey rolled his eyes. "Fine Louis. Whatever you say"

"I don't believe you" Louis said.

"Well, too bad Louis. Now leave me alone" said Harvey.

"I want your word. Otherwise I am not leaving you even for one second for the rest of the night"

"You have my word Louis. Now please get out of my face" said Harvey.

"Fine, you nitwit" Louis said and marched out muttering under his breath.

The next morning Donna came to work still unnerved a out Harvey's behaviour the previous night. She knew something was wrong and she was determined to know about it. The opportunity came earlier than she expected as she saw Harvey waiting for her in her office.

Harvey saw her enter and then said, "Before you say anything Donna, I want to apologize for the previous night. I know I shouldn't have yelled at you like that."

"That' all you've got to say? Sorry? That's it?" Donna said.

"Donna I know you are pissed off at me. But right now I have to be in court. We can do this later" said Harvey.

"Goddammit Harvey! What the fuck is your problem? I-"

"Is everything okay in here?" Samantha interrupted them.

"Yes, everything is fine. Are you done? We need to leave" Harvey said to Samantha.

"Yes, in fact I was looking for you" said Samantha. "We need to discuss a few points before we go"

"We can do that in the cab. Let's go" Harvey said and with one fleeting glance at Donna he followed Samantha outside her office.

The following Evening -

The cellphone slipped from his hand and fell onto the seat of the cab. It all felt like a bad dream. No, he couldn't lose her, not so soon. They had made things right not a long time ago. What the hell was he supposed to do? Where the hell was he supposed to go?. Harvey wanted to cry. He could feel tears welling up his eyes. But tough men like him didn't cry, did they? He could think of only one place to go where he would find solace and where he wouldn't be judged. His heart was pounding and he felt dizzy. He feared he was going to pass out. He urged the cab driver to speed up and take him to another address.

"This is a great idea" Thomas said as he settled on the bed next to Donna. "Movie and dinner in bed"

"Told you. My ideas are awesome just like me" Donna said giving him a quick kiss.

"You know" Thomas said taking her hand in his. "I was thinking maybe we could go somewhere for the weekend. Just the two of us."

Donna's heart flipped. That was a big step and too soon in a relationship. But it was true that she had never felt so at ease in any of her previous relationships. She didn't bother to even think it over. "I'll really like that Thoma-"

A knock on the door interrupted them. Donna wondered who was calling at this hour. "I'll get that" she said and hopped down the bed. When she pulled open the door, she was surprised to see Harvey standing outside.

A frown appeared on her face. "Harvey what are you doing here? If you are here to yell at me again and -" she stopped talking suddenly. One look at him told her something was terribly wrong. She had never seen him look so broken.

"Harvey, what is the matter?" Donna asked in concern.

There was silence for an entire minute before he spoke. "It's my mom. S-she had an accident"

"What? How? Is she okay? Donna asked in a moist tone.

Harvey stared at her for a moment and then he crossed over to her and then he was hugging her, his face buried in the crook of her shoulder. His arms went around her waist, pulling her snug against him.

"Harvey, I am so sorry" Donna said hugging him back.

He took comfort in her familiar scent and before he knew, big hot tears had began to fall. Minutes passed and Donna held him not wanting to let him go.

A slight rustling sound caused them to break apart from their embrace. Thomas kessler stood behind them, looking from Donna to Harvey, his face lit in confusion. For those few minutes, Donna had completely forgotten that Thomas was inside. Harvey looked stunned to see Thomas there for a moment and then it hit him. Ofcourse he was here. He and Donna were dating.

"I.. uh... am sorry... I didn't mean to... I'll just leave in a minute" Harvey said rather awkwardly.

"You are not going anywhere" Donna said in a firm voice. "Stay here. I will be back in a minute"

She signalled Thomas and he followed her inside, waiting for her to speak.

"Thomas, I am really sorry but can we - can we do this later sometime?" Donna asked him uncertainly.

"What is the matter?" Thomas asked.

"It's Harvey's mother. She had an accident" Donna explained softly.

"Is she alright?" Thomas asked.

"I don't know. He didn't say anything. But I really hope she is" Donna said, her voice cracking slightly.

"Yeah, I hope so too" said Thomas. "Hey" he said giving her hand a light squeeze when he saw the ghostly look on her face. "Are you okay?"

"No, I am not" said Donna and a fat tear slid down her cheek. "I can't see him like this, Thomas. I have never seen him in so much pain. I - I-" Donna couldn't speak anymore.

"Hey, listen to me. It's going to be okay." said Thomas gently rubbing her back."

Donna nodded giving a small sob.

"Do you want me to drive you and Harvey somehwere? To the hospital perhaps?" Thomas asked.

"His mother is in Boston " said Donna.

"Okay so do you want my help with anything else? The flights?" Thomas asked.

"Thank you Thomas but I need to talk to him first" said Donna.

"Alright, but if you need anything, I am just a call away, okay? Whatever time of the night it is" said Thomas gently.

"Thank you Thomas. It means a lot to me" Donna said giving him a small smile. "I will call you."

"You take care." Thomas said kissing gently on the top of her head. "I will wait for your call"

He grabbed his keys and coat and made his way outside. Harvey was sitting on the couch. He looked up as he saw Thomas leaving, his eyes looking bloodshot.

"Listen, Thomas I am really sorry to have interrupted like that I-"

"Please, you don't have to apologize. It's all right, really." Thomas said in a gentle voice.

"Thank you" Harvey nodded.

"You take care. I hope everything will be alright" Thomas said to him. With one last nod at Donna, who was standing right behind him, Thomas left the apartment, shutting the door behind him. She went over to Harvey who was sitting on the couch with his head down. She knelt down beside him and put her hands on his knees.

"Harvey, she is gonna be okay" she said in a soothing voice. "What happened?"

"I was on my way home when I got a call from Marcus that Mom had a accident. A speeding truck hit her car and - and-" he broke off taking a deep breath.

"Oh my god. Is she okay? Did Marcus say anything?" Donna asked him.

"She is in surgery. They don't know yet. There was a lot of blood loss though" he said.

"Harvey, she is going to be fine" Donna said, putting her hand atop his and giving it a light squeeze. "You have to stay positive."

"I don't know, Donna" he said looking unblinkingly into her eyes, fighting hard to keep the tears at bay.

"We have to leave for Boston right now. I will book our tickets." Donna said.

"Donna I am not going" Harvey said.

"What?"

"I don't think I can see her like that. This is so unfair. I mean we just made things right a month ago and now - now this" Harvey said his voice breaking.

"You just can't sit here and worry about her. When she wakes up, I am sure the first person she wants to see is you" said Donna in an assuring voice.

"I don't know whether she is going to wake up or not! Marcus didn't sound so sure himself when he spoke to me on the phone" Harvey said as if he had lost all hope.

"Harvey stop it!" Donna said angrily. "It is not upto you or Marcus to decide. I am sure the doctors are doing their job well at the moment and I am telling you she is going to be okay. And we have to be there"

"Fine" Harvey said.

"I will get the tickets done." Donna said.
