Prequel
She was three years old the first time something truly magical happened to her. Lily Evans and her sister Petunia were busy building sandcastles at the beach on their family vacation when a beach ball almost destroyed their kingdom. One moment the beach ball was soaring straight towards them and the next it turned into a giant soap bubble that popped in thin air.
After that day, Lily had encountered magic countless times. Most of the time her magic was accidental or defensive but there was one thing she could do on her own. She could make flowers bloom in her palm. Today, at nine years old, Lily decided to show her sister what she could do. She was tired of keeping this secret to herself and she wanted to share it with someone.
So, early one morning Lily led her sister to the park down the road. What she didn't know was that a pale boy with black hair and black eyes was watching them from behind a tree.
"'Tunie...I've got something to show you. Please, don't freak out, just watch." Lily opened her hand and a daisy sprouted forth. Petunia stared at her in shock.
"You're a freak Lily!" she finally exclaimed.
"She's not a freak. She's a witch." The boy said. He picked up a piece of grass and made it fly over to Lily.
"Who are you?" Lily asked.
"That's Severus Snape." Petunia answered the question, "His family lives further down the road. They're...a peculiar bunch. It's best to stay clear of them."
Lily walked over to Severus and extended her hand, "Hi, I'm Lily Evans."
"Severus Snape." he shook her hand.
"You're freaks! Both of you! I'm telling mother!" Petunia yelled and ran away.
"Don't listen to her. She's just jealous." Severus told Lily.
"What's she got to be jealous about?" Lily asked.
"You're special and she's ordinary." Severus replied.
"So, you said I'm a witch, are you one too?" Lily asked
"Not quite. I'm a wizard." Severus answered.
"So, why haven't I met any other witches and wizards before?" Lily asked.
"Well magic only blooms in the rarest of souls. Most are born into wizarding families. Some people have mothers and fathers who are wizards, if it's been that way for more than a few generations, they're considered purebloods. Others only have one magical parent. They're called halfbloods. I am a halfblood. My mum's a witch and my dad's a muggle." Severus started explaining.
"Muggle?" Lily asked.
"Non-magical folks." Severus replied, "And lastly there are muggleborns. Witches and wizards like you who aren't born into magical families. They are especially rear." Severus explained, "And sadly they're often looked down upon in the magical community."
"Wow." Lily said, "So, magic?" Lily asked trying to steer the conversation away from the fact that muggleborns, like her, are looked down upon, "How do we learn to use it?"
"Witches and wizards have schools, just like muggles." Severus replied, "The school in Great Britain is called Hogwarts. Other countries have their own schools."
"Hogwarts?" Lily asked for more information.
"Hogwarts, school of witchcraft and wizardry." Severus started explaining, "In the year of your eleventh birthday you get a letter by owl inviting…"
"Owl!" Lily exclaimed in disbelief.
"It's the magical worlds chosen form of communication. You can send nearly everything by owl. But, anyway, as I was saying, you get a letter inviting you to come and attend Hogwarts. You'll also need to go shopping for school supplies in Diagon Alley." Severus continued.
"Diagon Alley? Where's that?" Lily asked.
"Don't worry, you're muggleborn which means that someone from the school will come to take you to Diagon Alley after you've received your letter." Snape explained. "After that, you get to go to Hogwarts where you'll be placed into a house. There's Slytherin, my personal favourite and the one I'm heading to. Slytherin is the house that values ambition, resourcefulness and even cunningness. Then there's Ravenclaw. Ravenclaw values cleverness, creativity and wit. Hufflepuff values loyalty, friendship and hard work. Lastly, there's Gryffindor. It's said to be the house of nobility, honour and pride but if you ask me they're all a bunch of arrogant fools who will do anything for looks."
"That is so cool." Lily said.
"It's even cooler in real life. I can't wait to go!" Severus exclaimed happily.
"And, you're sure I'll get to go?" Lily asked.
"It's not everyone who can make flowers bloom out of their palms. Trust me Lily, you'll go. You're special. You're like me." Severus smiled.
"Lily, mother says it's time for lunch!" Petunia returned at the entrance to the park, "and she says you're allowed to invite that...boy...for lunch. I wouldn't if I were you." Petunia left and ran back the way she had come leaving Lily alone with Severus.
"Would you like to come for lunch?" Lily asked.
"I'd love to." Severus replied and they walked back up the road.
