It had been 6 months and the experiment was nowhere near completion. Countless hours had been poured into finishing this massive project, and Max swore that he'll finish his Experiment no matter what! Provided that he stops getting distracted and sidetracked that is…. But of course, even that has been shown to be a challenge in itself. This is the story of a scientist trying to fulfill one of the biggest scientific breakthroughs of his career.
Meet Max Timber. He's one of the most brilliant scientists in all Equestria. There aren't too many notable Equestrian scientists, but Max is definitely a stand out in his field of expertise. Why is that you ask? Well for starters, Max isn't even a pony. He's a member of the Abyssinian Cat race, just like Capper Dapperpaws. He wore a long white lab coat and a pair of high tech protective goggles on his head. This beige, stripe furred bipedal anthro cat spends most of his days conducting countless experiments all within the privacy of his secret Laboratory.
Well...to be completely honest... the Lab is not exactly what you would consider "Secret" at all… in fact it's basically a large spare room in his Friend's basement. With all that aside, Max was actually on the hunt for a different temporary workspace because his last experiment which involved coming up with a way to take a "Waterless bath" ended up completely flooding the lab with pink artificial suds. Hey, at least they were cotton candy scented.
"Meeoowzers! I gotta find a new temporary place to continue my new Experiment…. but where….hmm…" said Max as he wandered through Ponyville Square.
Not long after saying this, Max caught sight of his good friend Felix Floetry the Orange furred, Green shirt wearing Kitsune who works at the local Bookstore. Felix was carrying groceries in his arms. It was in that moment that Max found his opportunity. He approached his fox friend.
"Hey there Felix meow! Long time no see my foxy bro!" Said Max with an awkward toothy grin.
Felix stopped walking and turned in the direction of the beige Cat.
"Yo, what's good cat homie? I have a feeling that you are gonna ask me for a favor." Said Felix with a slight smirk.
"H-How did you know that?! All I said was hello! Meow!" Said Max in surprise.
Felix shook his head and laughed a little then said.
"My dude, you've done this several times before. You casually greet me like, 'Heeey foxy bro, nice weather today! Oh by the way, can I ask a favor?' and then I help you haha!" Said Felix with a smug expression.
Max stood there, jaw dropped. He then scratched his head and said,
"Dang... how do you do that?...well anyway, I do need a huge favor from you buddy…"
"I'm all ears bruh." Said Felix.
"well…my lab is currently um, indisposed at the moment and I was wondering if I could possibly use your basement to finish working on my current experiment? Please, I'll owe you big time." Said Max, clasping his paws together as he pleaded.
Felix took a minute to think carefully about this. As brilliant as Max is, oftentimes his Experiments don't always go very well. The last time Felix let him use his house, the entire roof dissolved away. At the same time tho, Felix knows how passionate the Science cat treats his work and how much it means to him. After a labored Sigh, Felix relented.
"Aight cat homie, you can use my basement. I just gotta run it by my girlfriend Lucky Genre. But there is one condition" said Felix.
Max's ears perked up and his tail began to wag happily. Not many creatures would be so easily willing to let their home become a base of unpredictable Experimentation.
"Thank you Felix! Oh wait... what's the condition?" Said Max with a slight hint of worry in his voice.
Felix sat his groceries down on the ground.
"The condition is, you have to allow a couple of my other Science pals to assist you with your Experiment. That way, there is less of a chance of it going horribly wrong." Said Felix as he folded his arms.
Max smiled warmly and nodded in agreement. Felix smiled too and picked his groceries back up.
"Ok now that that's settled, let's go find my buddy Foxy" said Felix.
"Wait, Foxy? Is that actually his name or are you just trolling?" Max said in confusion since "foxy" is what he sometimes calls Felix as a little nickname.
Felix chuckled a bit and started walking.
"No Max, I'm dead serious. Foxy is actually his real name. See, Foxy is from Vulpisia the Fox country just like I am." Said Felix.
Max scratched his whiskers a little and put his hands in his lab coat pockets.
"huh, another Vulpisian eh? I suppose I should've guessed that…" said Max
Felix nodded
"that's correct, he's a fox like me. The thing is though, he's not a Kitsune like i am. He's a Gifox." Explained Felix.
Max looked even more confused.
"W-whats a Gifox? Sounds like a stifled sneeze." Said Max
The two continued to walk as Felix kept on explaining.
"From what I know, a Gifox is similar to the Kitsune tribe, but their magic properties are very different. For starters, they don't gain extra tails as they grow more powerful. Instead, they are born with special gemstones in their foreheads that give them access to all sorts of magic. Similar to the horn of a unicorn. Ya feel me?" Said Felix.
Max looked absolutely fascinated as the Kitsune taught him about this little known Fox subrace.
"Fascinating! I've gotta write this down!" Said Max as he quickly whipped out a pen and pad from the inner pocket of his lab coat.
"Yea well, this Gifox is an absolute genius... and a bit of an abrasive introvert...but he'll definitely be a great help. Let's stop by my house on the way there so i can drop off these groceries." Said Felix.
However, at that moment, Felix began to sense a familiar presence right behind him. Before he could fully turn around, the presence spoke.
"Nice explanation. A bit bland but I'd expect that coming from you." Said the newcomer.
The Fox and the Cat bother turned around. Max quickly drew his ray gun from his lab coat and pointed it at the Stranger.
"By Celestia, I demand you Identify yourself Meooow!" Said Max, trembling a little.
The stranger turned out to be none other than Foxy himself. He has a habit of popping up randomly whenever he feels like it especially in hopes of startling Felix for some odd reason which tends to irritate him. Foxy explained that he had felt their auras close by and that he decided to spy on them until he felt like revealing himself.
"Who's the Abyssinian, Felix?" Asked Foxy, tho not exactly out of genuine interest.
"This is my friend Max Timber. He's a scientist trying to complete a major Experiment. We were actually on our way to your house in Gastly Gorge to ask for your help in assisting him." Said Felix.
Foxy folded his arms and had a blank expression.
"What makes you think that I would help him? I have no reason to" said foxy in a very flat manner.
Max hissed at him.
"Hey! There's no reason to be so rude about it! You could have just said no!" Snapped Max.
"you're right. I could have. In fact, I'm saying it now. No" said foxy without batting an eye.
Max started to get angry with Foxy's Attitude so Felix stepped in.
"Yo, chill y'all! Max, don't get all worked up. This is just how Foxy talks to folks he doesn't know. Believe it or not, there is a reason for it and it also is why he's so abrasive. Foxy, please do me this favor bruh. If you do, I'll owe you a big debt in return." Felix said as he got in between them.
Max sighed and lowered his ray gun. He trusted that Felix knew what he was talking about. Foxy looked away and rolled his eyes.
"Hmph! Whatever... I'll help i guess." Said Foxy with a slight hint of remorse in his voice as if he wanted to apologize but was unable to.
"Alright, thank you. Now let's get to Felix's house. He said that it was ok for us to use his basement for the Experiment." Said Max as he put away the gun and adjusted the goggles on his head.
Foxy uncrossed his arms
"Ok easy" said Foxy
He then snapped his fingers and instantly teleported them all to Felix's house in his living room. Lucky Genre, Felix's Kirin girlfriend and Faithful Sunshine, her daughter, were both sitting on the couch as the three teleported in. Lucky was a tad startled at the sudden appearance of her boyfriend and his two friends.
"Eeep! F-Felix? Did you teleport home honey? I thought you were still doing errands." Said Lucky who was justifiably confused.
Faithful Sunshine laughed and clapped her hooves.
"I was Honey. I took little Night Fall back home, put the money in the bank then picked up some groceries. But then I ran into Max here and agreed to allow him to use our basement so he can finish his work. Are you okay with that Lucky?" Said Felix as he put the groceries down.
Lucky gave a smile and nodded her head.
"of course it's okay! We're more than happy to help out friends if we're able to!" Said Lucky.
Suddenly, Little sister Night Fall appeared from behind Felix and smiled. "I wanna help too!" Said the tiny obsidian colored umbrum Pegasus filly. Felix looked shocked.
"h-how did you get here? I thought I took you back home?" He said.
Night Fall giggled and booped the 9 tailed Fox with her smol little hoof.
"I hid inside your tails! I'm surprised you didn't feel it Felix! Haha!" Said Night with a big smile.
"I wanna help with the science thing too!" She said in her high pitched excitement.
"oh good grief…" said Foxy as he rubbed his temples.
"Awww who's this cute little filly?" Said Max as he patted Night Fall's thick mane.
Nightfall turned and looked at Max
"My name is Nightfall and I come to Felix's house a lot. And sometimes I play with Faithful Sunshine. But today, me and my friend Deafhorse were hanging out with Felix and Lucky!" said Nightfall all happy and innocent.
Felix shook his head and made his way to the phone.
"I'm going to call my homie Toxic Cure. He's a Cyborg Unicorn who's also a Scientific and technological genius. He would be an excellent help as well. After I get off the phone, I'm taking you back home Night!" Said Felix as he dialed some numbers.
"Nuuuu!" Yelled Nightfall then she hid under the kitchen table.
Foxy leaned against the wall in the corner of the room. He was secretly feeling a surge of anxiety due to so many people being in the same room at once. Max took out a portable analyzer and started scanning the house. Lucky took Faithful upstairs to tuck her in for a nap.
Meanwhile, in a Laboratory deep in the mountains. Toxic Cure, and bright green and black cyborg unicorn stallion with synthetic skin and coat, was conducting his own Experiments alongside his personal Android pony which he designed to look exactly like him named Proto.
"Hey Proto, pass me the soldering torch please." Said Toxic.
Proto came trotting over to him with the tool
"Here it is, one soldering torch coming right U-" as Proto said this, he suddenly tripped over some loose Debris and dropped the torch in-between a large crack in the floor,
"G-Geez Toxic! What have you been doing in here? This place is a mess!" Said Proto with an aggravated tone as he picked himself up.
"Great, now I have to retrieve the torch from downstairs! Again! Uggh!" He groaned as he stomped away.
Toxic looked up from the mystery invention he was working on and chuckled.
"Hey sorry proto, I've been too busy to clean up at the moment hehe." Said toxic.
Just then, his phone began to ring.
