Sugawara Koushi is a man of many talents. Some obvious, most hidden. This is the story of how the people around him realize, little by little, just how incredible he is. Also known as 'Sugawara Koushi is oblivious to how amazing he is – the saga'. (Or not, because we all know Suga loves being loud and chaotic. He lives for it.)
Pft. I just really wanted to write little snippets of Suga. Not to mention he is one of my absolute favourite characters, I just really like fangirling over the characters I like. Maybe push them around a bit. It kind of follows the trend of 'I write about things I'd like Suga to be good at, and let other characters see his amazing abilities.'
Like this first chapter; it's a snippet of Suga doing his homework and taking exams. He's really diligent isn't he, my precious angelic devil.
Disclaimer: I don't own anything in this story; even the prompt is cliché and somewhat stolen from a DJ about Suga (and Daichi, but, well, there's no romance here, soooo...)
Warnings: Suga being ooc, because I will not stand for a mainstream story, nor for an in depth character analysis on my angel. Attempt at comedy. Seriously, this is not meant to be taken (very) seriously. I just really, really, really like overpowered Suga. In any way, shape or form. Read with caution

Studying
Suga was many things, if not stubborn and diligent. He never left his homework until the very last minute. Never got failing grades for his studies. Never failed in trying to cheer someone up. Even though he himself felt it was not something to be proud of; even though it was supposed to be a normal thing. You know; as though everyone did the things he did.
Suga considered himself as average. Average height (he really wasn't bothered by it. Honest.), average face (how dare anyone think he doesn't look like an angel, fight me), average sports abilities (honestly, it took up some real patience and time to continue volleyball when someone like Kageyama was on the team). (No, Suga knew that the team couldn't do without him. He was like the glue keeping the paper together in a magazine. Eventually, Suga figured, everyone would be able to fight by themselves. But until then, Suga was happy to know that he was needed by his team mates.)
(Not that Hinata or Kageyama never mentioned how they didn't want Suga to graduate. If they could, they'd make him stay until they themselves graduated.)
(It was funny how neither of them mentioned Asahi or Daichi, even though the other two third years were standing right next to Suga.)
(It must be a Suga-mama thing.)
(Daichi was not amused and Asahi felt heartbroken. But they understood. One does not simply ignore the charm of Suga.)
It came as no surprise that Suga took one of the top spots during the mid-terms in November. Not to Daichi or Asahi at the very least. They had been friends for two, nearly three years by now. They knew how smart Suga was and that he put more effort into his studies than they did, combined.
What did surprise them was that Suga took the first place. Of the entire year. Not just his class.
"When do you have the time to do homework? Do you even sleep?" Asahi asked, while Daichi simply stared at Suga's test results. Suga in turn simply looked at his two best friends with confusion written all over his face.
"What are you talking about? I go to bed at ten and wake up at six. Of course I do my homework after volleyball practice. It helps me calm down as well, when I'm nervous. Doesn't everyone do that?"
Never in their lives had they seen Suga look so confused and perplexed. They didn't dare tell him that no, not everyone did. Could do that. They were unable to concentrate on doing their homework, because volleyball took all their energy. Only during weekends and maybe every once in a while after school, were they able to catch up on homework. But definitely not during match times. And definitely not to calm down their nerves.
"Please, teach me for the test on Thursday then, two weeks from now," was all Daichi could say before he trudged back to his own seat. Suga looked hella confused, but Asahi didn't answer him when he asked what was wrong.
He had such weird friends. Suga didn't understand. It was unbelievable.
(But he did. And he relished in in.)
Apparently word had gotten around to everyone in the volleyball club, because Suga was getting a lot of amazed stares. There was one stare in particular that had Suga weirded out. It wasn't from Hinata or Kageyama. For once.
It was Tsukishima. The tall middle blocker was staring intently at Suga all throughout practice and Suga could not understand why. There was no heat behind the staring. It almost seemed as if Tsukishima was doing it unconsciously. But Tsukishima must have had a burning question, because his mind was obviously not on volleyball.
After practice, Tsukishima asked if he could speak to Suga alone. Not really seeing why they needed to speak alone, Suga nodded his head anyway and when everyone had left the gym, Tsukishima opened his mouth to speak.
After the Spring Tournament, Tsukishima had gotten a lot more vocal regarding his opinions and any questions he had and wanted answers to.
Apparently this was one of those times. "Sugawara-san," he began. "Could you please teach me how to study efficiently." It was a question Suga hadn't expected. Not from Tsukishima. Everyone was aware how obviously smart and intelligent the boy was. There should be no need for Suga to teach Tsukishima how to study.
But Suga picked up on Tsukishima's underlying request. "Efficiently, huh?" he asked, after he came down from his surprise. Tsukishima nodded his head, eagerly waiting for an answer. Suga could not help the mental image of a big golden retriever waiting for his owner's commands.
"Hmm, well. When do you study, Tsukishima?" Suga asked. Tsukishima thought for a moment, before answering. "Every weekend. I don't really study during the weekdays, because of volleyball. Only if we have tests coming, I study in the evenings. I can't focus on studying if I'm not doing it during the day time."
It was more of a Hinata answer (or excuse in the orange haired boy's case. Hinata may tell him differently, but Suga knew that Hinata barely studied, if at all) than Suga had expected. "That actually sounds like you're doing fine to me?" he asked, confused.
Tsukishima sighed. "Yes, but I want to get into a University in Tokyo and I doubt the way I'm studying now will be helpful when I get in." Suga noticed that Tsukishima didn't doubt he would be getting into the university. He gave a small, genuine smile. If not a bit smug. Because of course Tsukishima knew he'd get into Tokyo University. If anyone could do it (apart from Suga himself of course), it was Tsukishima.
"Well, I can tell you what I do differently from you, if that helps? You could try what I do. Summarizing the previous lessons before you next lessons. For example, I have English first thing in the morning, so after the lesson, without looking at my notes, I go over everything I remember. After I get home from school, I'll sort out my notes and summaries and write down everything I forgot or remembered wrongly. It helps your short term memory."
Tsukishima diligently nodded his head and Suga found it absolutely adorable; the mental image of the golden retriever returning to his mind. He sniggered and stood on his toes to ruffle Tsukishima's hair. The other boy looked at him questioningly, but didn't argue with the hair ruffle. Suga smiled fondly.
"Good luck, Tsukishima and let me know if you want any preparatory materials for universities. I can help you. I am, after all, the top of the school." He had a big grin on his face as he said this and Tsukishima blinked owlishly. Suga was a lot more devious than he let on and Tsukishima could only mentally laugh at himself and everyone else for falling for Suga's act every time.
(He also had the feeling Suga was hinting at more when he said he was the top of the school.)
(He found out next day why he felt that way. It only solidified his firm belief that Sugawara Koushi was not to be trifled with.)
Daichi couldn't even be surprised anymore. Suga was not just top of the school, but he had, apparently without telling anyone else (not even the school), taken the national mock exam and scored within the top ten of Japan.
He wouldn't tell any of his friends which spot he had taken, but Daichi doubted it was lower than number five, if the Principal made the announcement so over the top. Both he and Asahi were stunned beyond words as Suga received a certificate as well as an invitation to study in a different school (most likely a better school than Karasuno. Well. Higher level, than Karasuno) for a week, which he gladly accepted.
The students were all clapping, but Daichi figured most didn't understand the situation. Not even the Principal looked as though he understood what was happening. He watched as Suga walked off the stage and the Principal took the microphone.
"U-uhm, to all students, take an example from Sugawara-kun and do your best. You-you never know how f-far you might go," he stuttered. Daichi almost laughed out of sheer ridiculousness for the situation. Suga was simply grinning and when he caught Daichi's eye, the angelic smile slid off and Daichi saw (once more) the real face of his best friend.
A smirk graced Suga's face, a very smug one at that. If Daichi didn't know any better, he'd have thought Suga was a devil, not a human (nor angel). Suga relished in chaos, especially if he caused it himself.
(Daichi oddly wondered why the image of a baby with a fedora and a gun-transforming-lizard appeared in his mind.)
(He must be going mad.)
Omake #1: Oikawa
Iwaizumi was barely able to contain his laughter, but his shoulders were visibly shaking from the force of supressing himself. The others in the clubroom were watching, eyes wide, as Oikawa slowly spiralled into depression, hilarious self-loathing and showed his surprisingly rich vocabulary of curse words.
They heard 'refreshing son of a bitch', 'fucking wolf in angel clothing' and the best of them all 'I thought we were allies in the pretty setter alliance'. The 'against Kageyama' was left unsaid, but Iwaizumi had heard it loud and clear. This, for the record, made all members understand that Karasuno's number 2 had done something better than Oikawa for once and therefore made him a god in their eyes. Anything that could be better than Oikawa deserved praise.
Banzai for Karasuno's Sugawara Koushi!
In the corner of the room lay the newspaper, forgotten as it had brought the terrible(ly great) news that Sugawara had taken the top spot in the national mock exam the week prior. The front page had the boy's angelically devilish smile, him holding a certificate and the list of other people who had made it to the top twenty of Japan.
Oikawa was number eleven on the list.
He hadn't even made it into the top ten.
(In Karasuno, Kageyama was full of pride. It surely was an amazing thing that his senpai was number one in Japan. Above Oikawa. Even though it wasn't volleyball.)
(He secretly thought it was better to be number one in studying than volleyball.)
Omake #2: Ushijima
Ushijima felt something ache in his chest as he read the list of names. His was there, sure, at number 19 and it was better than when he participated for the middle school mock exam three years ago (having been number 57 of the hundred), but what was it? That disappointed, aching, sting in his heart as he looked at the other names on the list. Namely the one at the very top.
Tendou came over, eyes roaming over his friend as said friend stared off in a daze, at the wall next to their canteen doors. His eyes went to the newspaper that was hung up on the announcement board and he slowly felt his eyes widen. He gaped as he read the article. As well as the fact that apparently, Sugawara had chosen Shiratorizawa for the study week he was promised by Karasuno's Principal.
Tendou looked at Ushijima and saw to his relief and slight anxiety (nervous breakdown! Incoming), that Ushijima seemed to be looking forward to next month. He was unsure if the school (and with it the volleyball team) could handle an excited Ushijima Wakatoshi. He felt the muscles in his arms cramp up at the thought of practice. He mentally prepared himself as he gave Ushijima a pat on the shoulder and walked back to his classroom. The evening sun shone over him, giving him a somewhat holy appearance. A single tear slid down his face as he thought about the gruelling practice that awaited him the coming month.
Goodbye my free time
Omake #3: Bokuto
Akaashi stared in amazement as he watched Bokuto's facial expressions. It went from blank astonishment to furious incredulity. It went from white to red, to black and back to white again. Eventually his face stayed white, though not sickly so, and there was a fire in his eyes not unlike the one where he gets excited for matches.
He stared over Bokuto's shoulder at the catchphrase in the magazine Bokuto was holding. "Genius high-schooler manages to become this year's number 1!" Akaashi read the article as he took the magazine from Bokuto's hands, saving it from being crumpled. He whistled in amazement, his usually stoic face unable to keep the astonishment from not showing on it.
He felt other students round on their lunch table, eager to find out what had riled up Bokuto. Akaashi read about Karasuno's Sugawara taking the top spot in all of Japan with the mock exam, actually managing to get a perfect score on all subjects. There were of course questions on whether the boy had cheated, but the people who had been monitoring the examinees as they were making the exams, assured everyone that no one could have cheated and even if they had, they would've been unable to finish the tests as fast as Sugawara had done.
Sugawara became a legend, for sure. Akaashi knew that the other setter would be remembered for his brains and wits, rather than his presence on the court from now on whenever he would play volleyball with his team. He was somewhat sad to know that Sugawara was a third year, and as such would graduate soon. It meant he would not be able to play practice matches with the other setter anymore. Well, at least he had managed to play against Karasuno this year.
(Akaashi did not ask Bokuto why his name was not on the list. He was curious where he had placed, as he knew Bokuto had participated in the national mock exam, but knew better than to ask and depress the hell out of the older boy.)
(He had an inkling Bokuto wasn't even in the top 100 of Japan. He had more brawn than brain after all.)
Omake #4: Kuroo
Lev had never seen Kuroo as surprised before as now. He always knew the Captain to be composed, rational and quick-witted with his comebacks. Never had he come across Kuroo when the other was so thrown out of his element. He laughed when he saw his senpais in the changing rooms, Kenma sitting in a corner gaming, Kuroo standing in front of the lockers. It had been quiet for once, the other members not yet there. Only Kenma's game made any sound in the changing room.
Lev had stormed in, exclaiming how well he'd done in the midterm exams (for once) and how he had Kenma to thank for it. Kenma had merely looked up slightly, nodded his head and went back to his game. But Kuroo had not answered at all. No response. Nada.
And Lev was worried something could be wrong. "Say, Kenma, why is Kuroo-san so quiet?" he asked, quietly whispering the words. Kenma paused his game and looked over his shoulder at Kuroo. He sighed and stood up, taking the magazine from Kuroo's hands. A slip of paper fell out and Lev picked it up, scanning the words on it. It was a list, with names on it.
No names stood out in particular. Apart from three he recognized. The list had twenty names on. On number 19 was Ushijima Wakatoshi. Everyone in the volleyball community had at least seen a picture of the teen before. Lev read further up, seeing Oikawa Tooru's name on number 11. His interest was piqued when he read Kuroo Tetsurou on number 7. His eyes went to the title of the list.
It read: 'Top 20 best students of Japan'. It seemed to be a list from the magazine Kuroo was holding. "I didn't even know a test like this existed," Kenma said softly, giving Lev the magazine, amazement written all over his face. Lev curiously took the magazine, interested in what could be in it for Kenma to make such a face, and read the article Kenma had pointed out. He looked up so fast his neck cracked. "Hey, isn't this Hinata's…?" Kenma nodded.
"Hmm, it's Shouyou's senpai. Setter for the Karasuno volleyball team," he affirmed and Lev grinned. His eyes went back to the top of the list in his hands. It read: Sugawara Koushi, top student of Japan.
"It's a shame he's not coming to Nekoma," Lev mentioned and Kuroo snapped out of his reverie (finally). "It's not like our school is much better education wise, when compared to Karasuno," he scoffed and Lev noticed it had a hint of envy to it. "Don't be sour. You're above Ushiwaka and Oikawa," Kenma said as he went back to his game.
Kuroo pulled a face but didn't answer, the door opened and the rest of the volleyball team headed inside. Lev ran to the others, showing them the magazine and Kuroo went back to sulking.
"Hey," Yamamoto said, catching everyone's attention. "Kuroo, didn't you say Bokuto also took the examination? His name's not on here," Yamamoto said. Kuroo blinked and a feline grin spread across his face. He laughed, high spiritedly, and changed into his sports clothes. "Time for practice!" he said, jogging out into the gym. Yamamoto blinked, unsure of what he'd done to make Kuroo so happy and Kenma patted his back. "Good work," the setter said and everyone followed Kuroo's example and changed.
Sometimes Kuroo could be so simple minded.
Lev sniggered in the back, sending Hinata a text via Line about what had happened.
(Hinata responded in kind and send a picture of Daichi and Asahi, spacing out during practice, volleyballs heading for their faces.)
A/N: Hello there! It's been waaaay too long since I posted anything. But, I've been obsessed with Haikyuu! And I love reading works of other people about my favourite character: Suga (and many others, but that will come later). So.
I present to you my stories on Suga being awesome in one way or another.
As you might have guessed (apart from having mentioned it before the story started), this is not to be taken very seriously. I simply let my creativity (ahem) flow as I write ridiculous stuff like this. Let me know if you enjoyed it!
There is much more to come, I'm sure! None of the things I'll post will be related (unless mentioned otherwise), so the story will always be complete. I have a bad track record of not finishing what I started. Or taking a very, very, very long time (1 year for every very I just wrote) to finish something. My apologies, I don't really like finishing my stories. Just don't know where to start the last chapters of things…
