Takes place at the episode that Mackenzie couldn't improv (Season 3).
The Big, Not So, Easy: The Abby Lee Dance Company heads to New Orleans hoping to retain their championship title at Nationals.
Gianna: Can I have Asia and Mackenzie?
It is National's week and everyone is stressed out about it. Abby has not decided yet which girl will perform in the mini category: Asia or Mackenzie. Asia has got the sass. Mackenzie has better technique. So she got an idea to help her decide which girl would be her best foot forward to win the national title.
Abby: This is called Dance Doctor. You are going to make it all better on the dance floor. Listen to the music. I'm going to give you a chance to just kind of improv and feel it, because it's tough. I wanna see what you hear.
The music starts playing and Asia starts improv dancing. She is used to it and nails every single step that she comes up with. Mackenzie gets nervous and intimidated by Asia and stays still.
Melissa: Come on, Kenz. Dance. Just dance.
Mackenzie has some ideas, but doesn't feel confident enough to display it. Melissa gets frustrated.
Mackenzie: I'm not good at improv dancing.
Mackenzie couldn't improv because of the pressure of going against Asia and Asia being fabulous. Also, her mom yelling at her didn't help. Mackenzie feels awkward and a little anxious and kept messing with her hands.
Melissa: Then sit, Kenzie. If you don't wanna dance, then sit.
Mackenzie: I want to dance!
Melissa: Then dance. (raises her voice) Just dance! Improv!
Melissa grabs Kenzie and dragged her to the chair.
Melissa: Sit, if you don't want to dance.
Mackenzie: No! I wanna dance.
Melissa: Then dance! That's ridiculous. Improv. You do it at home all the time. You're adorable! Just do it.
Gianna stops the music.
Abby: Mackenzie! What happens when I send you to an audition in LA for some little kid commercial or something and they say, improv? You're gonna make me look like a fool!
Melissa: You're fabulous Kenzie. You're just not Asia.
Abby: But right now, put on the spot, you failed. (sighs) You're both dismissed for the day. See you tomorrow.

After rehearsal, Melissa and Mackenzie arrive at their hotel apartment. Maddie is still at the studio having a private class. Mackenzie grabs some chips for her to eat and sit at the kitchen table. Melissa enters the kitchen.
Melissa: What you did today at rehearsal was really embarrassing, Kenzie. I pay Abby a huge amount of money to teach you and you don't even wanna dance. You were not even trying!
Mackenzie: I wanted to dance, I'm just not good at improv dancing!
Melissa: You do it at home all the time, Mackenzie!
Mackenzie: I didn't know what to do, mom! It seems easy, but it's not!
Melissa: (frustrated) You dance every day since you were three years old. How hard can it be?
Mackenzie: I've been learning new choreography every week since I was six. But it's nothing compared to improv dancing. It's easy for you to say "just dance!". You were not the one in the spotlight.
Melissa: Miss Abby was really upset.
Mackenzie: What's the big deal, anyways?
Melissa: What's the big deal? (raising her voice) It was your chance of getting a solo at Nationals, and you blew it!
Mackenzie: (yells) I DON'T CARE!
Melissa: That is it! I've had it!
Melissa yanked Mackenzie from her chair, she turned her around hitting her bottom. Mackenzie cried out in pain.
Mackenzie: (crying) Stop it, mom!
Melissa: You're gonna embarrass me?
Melissa gave Mackenzie another smack on her bottom, the child screamed.
Melissa: Go to your room, now!

Maddie comes back from her private and enters her and Mackenzie's hotel room. Mackenzie is in bed crying.
Maddie: What happened?
Mackenzie: (crying) Mom spanked me.
Maddie: What? Why?
Mackenzie: Just because I didn't improv today when Abby told us to. She put on the music and asked Asia and I to improv. But I didn't know how, I'm not used to it.
Maddie: But we do our little dances at home all the time. How come you didn't know how to improv?
Mackenzie: I was nervous, ok? Asia is very good at improv and I'm not!
Mackenzie goes to the toilet and washes her face.
Mackenzie: I'm calling dad.
Maddie: No, Kenzie. She can lose our custody if dad brings it to the judge. You know he is trying to reverse the guardianship.
Mackenzie: I'm not even sure if I want to stay with mom anymore. (sniffles)
Maddie: If dad wins our custody, he will take us out of Abby's studio and out of the show. Is that what you want?
Mackenzie: No, but I was at the top of the pyramid this week and mom didn't even care much. All she cared about was the things I did wrong.
Maddie: I know she can be pushy and unfair sometimes, but she is always there for us, and she worries about our careers. All this experience in Dance Moms has been stressful for everyone, and this is Nationals, which adds more stress to all of us.
Mackenzie: It's not that I didn't wanna dance. I'm just not good at improv dancing. And then she got really mad and spanked me. Just like when I didn't wanna sing for the audition.
Maddie: I'm sorry, Kenzie. This has happened to me to.
Mackenzie: Really, when?
Maddie: Like, remember when Chloe got the scholarship at Joffrey Ballet School?
Mackenzie: Yeah…
Maddie: Well, I felt really upset that Chloe got that call. I thought that I kind of deserved to be on top. So I was acting up at the dressing room. She took away my phone and dragged me to a far away bathroom at the competition and spanked me. She said she wouldn't put up with a bratty kid.
Mackenzie: I didn't know about that. I thought she only took your phone away.
Maddie: But I was indeed misbehaving and being a brat.
Mackenzie: See, but I wasn't!
Maddie: I think she was just frustrated, Kenzie.
Mackenzie: Do not tell anyone about it, especially Asia.
Maddie: I won't, don't worry.

Next day at rehearsal, Abby gathers all the girls to an announcement. Asia's mom has decided that they were not going to participate of the competition anymore, due to a fight between Chloe's mom and Payton's mom.
Abby: Girls, I have an announcement to make. It is with great sadness, Asia has to cut her trip short and not participate in our National finals. (sniffles) Saying goodbye to a superstar.
Everyone say goodbye to Asia. Abby also kicks Chloe, Christi, Payton and Leslie out of the competition. Mackenzie gets to do the "Dance Doctor" solo. Kenzie is still mad at her mom for hitting her for no reason. But she decides not to act up for not getting into more trouble. Also, Maddie explained to her that Melissa was just stressed out, that she loves Mackenzie so much, and wants what's best for her. At night, Maddie and Mackenzie were in their beds ready to sleep.
Maddie: Do you like your solo?
Mackenzie: Yeah, it's pretty nice. But I'm mostly glad that Asia is out of the team.
Maddie: I'm worried about the group dance, though.
Mackenzie: Because Asia is not in it?
Maddie: No, because we lost three dancers right before the competition. I'm mostly worried Chloe is not competing. Besides that, I think the group dance is looking good. There is just some in between things that needs to be fixed, but we got this.
Mackenzie: What about your solo?
Maddie: We finished it today. It's looking good.
Mackenzie: Kendall has a solo too?
Maddie: She does. But I think there is more pressure on me to win, just because I had a better season than her.
Mackenzie: What if she beats you?
Maddie: I don't like to lose. But I don't ever lose anyway.
Mackenzie: (rolls her eyes)

Saturday at the competition, Mackenzie did well on her solo and the girls performed their group dance flawlessly. The group dance got first place, as well as Maddie's solo. After the awards, everyone gathers at the dressing room.
Melissa: (hugs Mackenzie) Congratulations, baby! You couldn't have done anything better.
Mackenzie: I got second place.
Melissa: I know, honey; it would mean so much to you to win a National title two years in a row. But you did absolutely great. There is nothing to worry about. I'm so proud of you.
Mackenzie: Abby is not mad?
Melissa: Of course not. You are fabulous, Kenzie. (kisses her) You're my talented little girl.
Abby: (to all the girls) Congratulations. This was very very very very very much earned. I'm glad that we ended our season overall National Champions. I mean… that's what you worked for!
(Everyone claps)
