Welcome to a dumpster fire that has been nagging in the back of my head for ages that may or may not get attention past one or two chapters. All jokes aside, Touhou has always had an intrigue behind it with holes that are left intentionally unfilled. This is the reason that its plot has been in the back of my head for a while, and I decided why not try fanfiction again (please don't read my last attempt unless you like hurting yourself, I was 13). Also, for context, I will be trying to combine the PC-98 timeline and Windows as best I can. The story takes place after the events of Mystic Square.

Anyway, enough talk about random stuff let us get into the story. I do not own either Touhou by ZUN or Rosario + Vampire owned by Akihisa Ikeda and Viz Media.

Chapter: 1

The Human of Balance

For Hakurei Reimu, the world seemed, for lack of a better word, weird. Though for her, that was what made her life entertaining at times. However, it was the peaceful times like this that she enjoyed as it gave her time to reflect on her situation.

Yokai, beings that acted against the human's existence, were Reimu's job to dispose of. For whom she did it for remained a mystery. The Hakurei name was not of her ancestry; instead, it was that of a long line of Mikos. It was a name shoved upon her so she wouldn't be branded as a witch.

The irony of her close friend, however, was not lost to her. Marisa Kirisame, a girl that was the antithesis of herself. A simple girl who thrust herself into the wilderness to obtain the powers of a witch.

Information on her relationship would, however, not be made public as to the pandemonium it would ensue. Despite the fate of a shrine maiden, Reimu refused to betray someone so close. Gensokyo was a place that required balance lest chaos be unleashed upon its lands. Humans had no idea of her dealings with the yokai, and that was the way Reimu intended to keep it.

Still, the friends she had made among them felt taboo, a thrill for her that Reimu wished she could relish in. Her very nature was opposed to them, as it was her duty to rid the realm of the troublesome bunch. It was a struggle Reimu contended with every day. A two-faced fate of appearance and life.

The musings of her philosophy, however, were put on hold as her daily life decided to bring itself back into existence. A sudden gust of wind had swept the yard of the Hakurei Shrine that Reimu had just finished cleaning of leaves. The relics of the past fall littered the yard again as a long sigh escaped the lips of the Miko. However, she would put her broom down as a certain magician made herself know as the cause of the mess.

"You can't resist just popping in unannounced, can you?"

"Well, what can I say you don't exactly have a mail service up here," said the magician clad in black and white as she dismounted her own broom.

"At the very least, you could have walked up the stairs instead of making a mess of my yard."

"You're telling me to take an hour of my time walking up the stairs that stretch an entire mountain. Ya know there is probably a reason you don't have too many donations ze~."

"Hey, no need to hit me where it hurts. Anyway, why are you going out of your way to visit me of all people? I can't imagine Mima just lets you out whenever considering how much value you are worth to her," said Reimu skeptical her of casual visit considering how past encounters have ended.

"What am I not allowed to visit a friend just to hang out? You wound me Reimu, but you must not hear about much up here since I left the mistress a few months ago. She doesn't have many plans as of right now, and I can't live without a little action," Marisa paused for a moment bringing out a piece of paper seemingly out of nowhere.

"You are right about this not simply being a visit, take a look at this." The magician handed the document to the purple-haired Miko.

"Yokai Academy? I wasn't aware there were many scholars among the populous." Reimu, while not showing, had her attention hooked. Yokai were still people in her eyes, but she had never really considered their culture.

"You would be surprised, ze~ though this doesn't exist in Gensokyo, which is why I brought it to your attention. I figured the Hakurei shrine maiden should know about a problem with the barrier." Marisa stated, hiding the excitement of a new adventure being a nonchalant mask.

This caught Reimu off guard. The barrier was simply something that was there her entire life, not something that held any significance to herself other than its legacy. To have the barrier tampered with by something outside of itself none the less was perplexing. Gensokyo existed in a plane that shouldn't be tangible to outsiders. The paper in her hand stood against everything she had ever known about her world. A simple piece of parchment lead to a plethora of emotions and questions.

"How did you get this if it came from the outside then?" The first question being that of her skeptic side. The response she got was in the form of an all too familiar nervous chuckle.

"I may have swiped it after observing this lady and neko. All I know was that the woman kept saying something about an impossible boundary being breached and the Hakurei barrier needing a second look. I put two and two together and made an educated guess. I have to say it was almost too easy to get that piece of paper the lady simply turned her back for a minute and I took it no questions asked. I probably should also question the validity of a random passerby, but this seemed way too exciting to simply take for granted ze~." Marisa responded in a giddy fashion, barely restraining her energy as she held back, waiting for Reimu to take it all in.

"So, you are saying that based on the musings of some possibly crazy woman that I should toss aside a fact of life that has been a law before we were even thought of?" Reimu said in a deadpanned tone.

"Yes," Marisa stated in a completely serious tone, betraying the almost comedic logic of her argument.

"Right... and how exactly are we to possibly take a look at this supposed Yokai Academy if it even exists beyond the barrier?" The Miko questioned as she gave Marisa a look showing her lack of faith.

"Well, wouldn't that be part of the adventure trying to figure out how the barrier could even be vulnerable in the first place? Isn't your job to look into such problems with the Hakurei barrier?" Marisa spoke to defend her position on the issue.

"I suppose it would, but I have never had to deal with the barrier I don't even know much about it other than it has the Hakurei name, and it is used to maintain Gensokyo," Reimu said as she started to let herself lean into Marisa's side as the idea caught her attention. The maiden had never really had the opportunity to explore her namesake. A sudden eagerness to discover more about herself had dug itself into her mind. In her perspective, how could she simply go on with a job that was a mystery to herself? Genji had been an ear to previous ponderings of such questions but had simply stated it off as information that didn't matter. The old turtle had simply vanished one morning after one of these musings with a note left on how it was time she learned to fulfill her tasks on her own. That had been three years ago. In her young mind, Reimu didn't make the connection, but in hindsight, the event felt suspicious.

"Where would we even start, I mean that lady you saw might take offense to being robbed of an item no matter how minuet." Stated Reimu pointing back to the earlier statement. The sheepish chuckle that Marisa let out did not fill her with much confidence.

"Well, I might know a person or two that could lend a hand."

Cut action

Well, is it trash? Maybe a little intriguing? Let me know what you think of it and how you would like to see the story progress. I am still new to this, so all I can do is lean back on a few years of high school and college papers that my teachers/professors found enjoyable. Constructive criticism is appreciated. Flames not so much, but I have dealt with worse. I hope this catches a few people's attention.
